Happy Trendy - “January 6”
It starts with you in the morning. On a bus to a new town, you said this was the only way out. Barely slept last night, half awake, eyes half closed as the sun hits your face. Is it all you imagined? Well, you left it all behind, thinking nothing was left for you All the things you remember, All the people you’ve met, All the faces you’ve known are gone.
Obligatory post today across all social media today because this song is too good and it’s January 6.

2020 shows
None in 2020. The above — Alex G at World Cafe Live in December 2019 — was the last show I saw.
[Previously: 2019 | 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011]
2020 was the first year that I can remember that I didn’t see any live music. It’s a depressing prospect, but even before the pandemic, I wasn’t on track to see that many shows. I had passed over a couple shows that I wanted to go to, and the only I had (and still have!) tickets for was the Beach Fossils/Wild Nothing show at Brooklyn Steel in May. That got pushed back to December. I don’t know when it’s supposed to happen now.
But even when live music comes back, it’s kind of hard for me to imagine going back to a bunch of them. My relationship with live music has changed. I’m not sure what’s next for it.

Top 25 albums of 2019
the music was pretty good this year.
[Previously: 2018 | 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011]
The honorable mentions: Angel Olsen — All Mirrors; Blood Orange — Angel’s Pulse; Better Oblivion Community Center — Better Oblivion Community Center; Future — Save Me; Greys — Age Hasn’t Spoiled You; The Japanese House — Good at Falling; Julian Lynch — Rat’s Spit; Kim Petras — Clarity; Lana Del Rey — Norman Fucking Rockwell!; Lisa Prank — Perfect Love Song; The Menzingers — Hello Exile; Solange — When I Get Home; Tacocat — This Mess Is a Place; Titus Andronicus — An Obelisk; Vivian Girls — Memory; Yohuna — Mirroring.
25. Vampire Weekend — Father of the Bride 24. Deerhunter — Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared 23. Whitney — Forever Turned Around
22. Spielbergs — This Is Not The End Spielbergs came across my radar in January or February via Spotify, and when I saw the cover art for This Is Not The End, I tried to guess what it would sound like. I pegged it as some combination of The Hotelier and Joyce Manor and other things of that ilk. It was similar to that — but so much more. This was part of the soundtrack from when I drove from Philadelphia to Baltimore to Pittsburgh to Indianapolis and back for the NFL combine. Good road trip. Top track: “Distant Star”
21. Girlpool — What Chaos Is Imaginary 20. Drawing Boards — The Message
19. Big Thief — Two Hands I sat in a coffee shop in my new neighborhood earlier this month and ran through Two Hands, which I kind of forgot about (whoops) after U.F.O.F. “Not” came on, the waning sunlight was reflecting off Eastern State Penitentiary and I could see the reflection of the dying sunset in the clouds to the east down Fairmount. It was A Moment, you could say. Top track: “Not”
18. Mark Ronson — Late Night Feelings The most misguided driving venture I’ve ever had is driving from Denver, Colo., to Davenport, Iowa, during my return from California in 2014. That drive took 13 or 14 hours, and I started it way too late in the morning and there was a time change built in. I was alone. It was a little much. But driving from Green Bay, Wisc., to Milwaukee, Wisc., after the Eagles played the Packers in September ranks up there, though it was more inconvienent than misguided. I left Lambeau Field at 1:30 a.m. and had to be at the airport in Milwaukee by 4 to return my rental car and make my plane home. It was a lot. It was all worth it. Top track: “See U Again (feat. Camila Cabello)”
17. Emily Yacine — Remember The Silver 16. Caroline Polacheck — Pang
15. Charli XCX — Charli I remember listening the Charli XCX in 2012 — ”Valentine” that February was my first exposure, then the You’re The One EP solidified her for me (s/o to the Balam Acab and Blood Orange remixes) — and being like, yeah, this is great. The highs of Charli validated that. The best songs on here are some of the best pop songs of the year. But there’s a lot that I skip, and that prevents it from being up higher. I made a playlist that has only the songs I really, really liked from Charli (because all of them are pretty good), and it turns out that those are the songs that are either solo or have the least intrusive features. It colored my perception of this album a ton It’s an interesting formula in 2019. But Charli rules. Top track: “Silver Cross”/”Official”
14. Barrie — Happy To Be Here 13. Nilüfer Yanya — Miss Universe 12. No Rome — Crying In The Prettiest Places 11. Clairo — Immunity
10. Frass Green — For You 9. Big Thief — U.F.O.F. 8. Mannequin Pussy — Patience 7. Kevin Morby — Oh My God
6. Mike Krol — Power Chords The second Saturday in March was the first real taste of spring, so I went up to the roof to sit and stare at the skyline while listening to Power Chords. It was the perfect marriage. Top track: “Pink and Blue”
5. Carly Rae Jepsen — Dedicated 4. Purple Mountains — Purple Mountains 3. (Sandy) Alex G — House of Sugar 2. Oso Oso — Basking In The Glow
1. Toro y Moi — Outer Peace We left Denver and headed west up into the hills toward Red Rocks, and Ian put on Outer Peace. It worked. As a chillwave defender for life, I miss the Causers of This vibe, but Outer Peace falls into the same lineage as Boo Boo a couple years ago. It’s rather minimal, and it’s contempative. The themes are large, and there’s a good Ariel Pink callback to the beginning of the decade: “It’s always the same, as always.” It worked in a Colorado summer, in a swampy Philadelphia September and a the cold tease of winter. Top track: “Fading”

Top 61 songs of 2018
I should probably write some words here about music in 2018, but in reality, it’s Feb. 11, 2019, and I’m already plotting how I can catch up on 2019 music and put myself in a position so it’s not February 2020 until I’m putting together my 2019 list. So that’s where I am right now. But 2018 had so much good music. I’m too lazy to go through all of the previous lists, but 61 feels like the longest list I’ve done in a long time. This is probably the most diverse the music has been, too. There’s still some fun to it, though I’m coming more and more removed each year. So here goes nothing.
[Previously: 2017 | 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011]
61. Ariana Grande - "no tears left to cry" 60. Forth Wanderers - "Nevermine" 59. Joyce Manor - "Think I'm Still In Love With You" 58. Camila Cabello - "In The Dark" 57. Stefflon Don - "What You Want (feat. Future)"
56. Tony Molina - "Nothing I Can Say" 55. American Pleasure Club - "new years eve" 54. Mallrat - "Groceries" 53. Kurt Vile - "Bassackwards" 52. 070 Shake - "Mirrors"
51. dijon - "WILD" 50. Carly Rae Jepsen - "Party For One" 49. Kacey Musgraves - "High Horse" 48. Clairo - "4EVER" 47. Juice WRLD - "Used To"
46. Parquet Courts - "Wide Awake" 45. Drawing Boards - "Poison Darts" 44. Cardi B - "Be Careful" 43. We Are Scientists - "No Wait At Five Leaves" 42. Hatchie - "Sure"
41. No Age - "Drippy" 40. DJDS - "Trees On Fire" 39. MØ & Diplo - "Sun In Our Eyes" 38. Drake - "Nice For What" 37. Yuno - "Fall In Love"
36. Parquet Courts - "Freebird II" 35. Hurry - "Waiting For You" 34. Mathew Lee Cothran - "Sports Bar" 33. Tinashe - "Faded Love (feat. Future)" 32. Kacy Hill - "Dinner"
31. Valee & Jeremih - "Womp Womp" 30. Remember Sports - "Making It Right" 29. SALES - "Off and On" 28. Jay Som - "Pirouette" 27. Calvin Harris - "One Kiss (with Dua Lipa)"
26. Hinds - "The Club" 25. Clairo & Danny L Harle - "B.O.M.D." 24. The Beths - "Great No One" 23. Cloud Nothings - "So Right So Clean" 22. No Rome - "Do It Again"
21. Swearin' - "Oil and Water" 20. Kevin Krauter - "Rollerskate" 19. Ryan Hemsworth - "Four Seasons" 18. Wild Nothing - "Letting Go" 17. Silk City - "Electricity (with Dua Lipa)"
16. Snail Mail - "Pristine" 15. Matt Ox - "I Like" 14. Charli XCX - "No Angel" 13. The 1975 - "Give Yourself A Try” 12. Kacey Musgraves - "Lonely Weekend"
11. Porches - "Now The Water" 10. Soccer Mommy - "Your Dog" 9. Future - "HATE THE REAL ME" 8. Launder - "Annie Blue" 7. Lil Baby & Gunna - "Drip Too Hard"
6. Swearin' - "Grow Into A Ghost" never thought Swearin’ would come back, but that was one of the prime gifts that 2018 bestowed upon us. it made me so happy that there was an earworm at least close to being on the level of “Kenosha.”
5. Beach House - "Pay No Mind" this is so dreamy and lets you float over it, like a Beach House song should.
4. Mallrat - "Texas" one of my favorite moments of music in 2018 is when the beat drops at 2:05. there is so much anticipation. it lives up to it.
3. No Age - "Send Me" when 2018 started, I didn’t know that I needed or wanted a No Age album. this song strikes to the core of what this band can do and the kind of feelings they can inspire.
2. Cloud Nothings - "Leave Him Now" this song feels like a synthesis of every Cloud Nothings album that has come before. I can feel hints of Leave You Forever or the self-titled (there’s no Turning On, unfortunately) and Attack on Memory and the rest. at the same time, it propels itself forward into something new.
1. Remember Sports - "Up From Below" it’s hard for me to describe what makes this song so good, but I felt it the most in 2018. last February, Remember Sports played at Everybody Hits right after they released this as a single. I think it was my first time there. I was drinking Original Sin’s rose cider, and we couldn’t even see the band. but the energy to this song stuck with me the entire year. it’s still with me.

Top 25 albums of 2017
I scrambled these into an order for your consumption.
[Previously: 2016 | 2015 | 2014 | 2013 | 2012 | 2011]
25. Charly Bliss — Guppy 24. Mathew Lee Cothran — Judas Hung Himself In America 23. Washed Out — Mister Mellow 22. Hazel English — Just Give In/Never Going Home 21. Charli XCX — Number 1 Angel
20. The Courtneys — The Courtneys II 19. Soccer Mommy — Collection 18. Day Wave — The Days We Had 17. Coma Cinema — Loss Memory 16. Real Estate — In Mind
15. Alvvays — Antisocialites 14. TOPS — Sugar at the Gate 13. Jay Som — Everybody Works 12. Big Surr — In Business 11. Future Islands — The Far Field
10. (Sandy) Alex G — Rocket 9. Charli XCX — Pop 2 8. Japandroids — Near to the Wild Heart of Life 7. Toro y Moi — Boo Boo 6. The Drums — Abysmal Thoughts
5. Phoenix — Ti Amo This might have been the most fun album of the year. It hooked me live at Shaky Knees in May and carried through the year. It was fun to just throw on in the car and drive around too.
4. Beach Fossils — Somersault This album was pretty expansive, and though there were some cringe-worthy lyrics, it really came through and hit a breezy spot.
3. LCD Soundsystem — american dream James Murphy & company came back in a big way. The opening to “oh baby” filled with me anticipation every time I listened to this album and it carried over all the way through the slow burn of “black screen.”
2. Cloud Nothings — Life Without Sound This is pretty self-explanatory for me. The growth for this band has been awesome, and Life Without Sound felt like another logical step forward in the direction of the catalog. This is a fun album.
1. Hoops — Routines Hoops was one of the best discoveries of 2017 for me. Quinn & I saw them play in the heat to open the final day of Shaky Knees in Atlanta in May, and I was hooked. Routines was my most-listened to album of the year and they gave me a couple of my favorite songs of the year. Hoops is good.
