4. Kundanbagh Witches’ Lair, Hyderabad

Located in the Kundanbagh area, this house has a peculiar story behind it. According to the story, a burglar went into the house to loot the owners but when he entered the house, he found the dead bodies of three women there. A mother and her two daughters who lived here. He panicked and informed the police about it. Upon further investigation, it was found that the women had been dead for almost six months.

Despite this fact, there were no reports or inquiries about them by the neighbors or locality people. It was also because these women had weird rituals that they would perform every night. The three would light candles and walk around the house. They would also have bottles filled with what looked like blood that they would hang in the veranda. The mother would often scare people off with her antics. Thus, no one really interacted with them.

5. Vas Villa, St Mark’s Road Bangalore

The story is that there were two sisters Dulcie and Vera Vaz. Since their house was in the main market place, they were under constant pressure by the land dealers. Then one fine day, Dulcie was murdered, and Vera Vaz escaped. Since then, the house is left untouched with no information about Vera Vaz.

“It was past mid night and there in the road we saw a woman with white hair and white saree collecting garbage. Her features were just the same as we see the movies of old female ghosts, but at that time she didn't appear to be anything different. She said something to one of us but we could not understand and moved ahead.” told by one of the neighbors.

6. Tunnel No.33, Shimla-Kalka Train Route'

One of the longest tunnels is on the Shimla-Kalka route that is a straight tunnel and lasts for over two minutes. Colonel Barog who was a railway engineer was given the task of constructing a tunnel in this region Alas, he had miscalculated and even after boring holes and digging till the center of the mountain, the laborers from different ends did not meet in the middle.  Due to the colonel’s folly, he was fired from the job and also fined by the government.  This really depressed him and he felt absolutely humiliated.

 

Colonel Barog shot himself out of his misery. Barog was buried outside the incomplete tunnel to pay homage to his work. But locals believe he never left the place. His spirit still haunts the tunnel.  But even today, people say Colonel Barog pays a visit to the tunnel. He even chats with people who are unaware of his existence but those who know who he is get spooked out. He is also spotted there and then vanishes after a while. The government tried sealing the incomplete tunnel but every time the lock was broken.

7 .House Number W-13 At GK-II ,Delhi

 Located in Greater Kailash-1, one of the most affluent localities of Delhi is house number W-3. This house is a dark reminder, a dark song that things that go bump in the night do exist, and they're closer to us than we will ever know.  The case was never solved and the property was abandoned. As time passed, the property came to be known as the ghost house. Seeing a young girl by the window, the sound of breaking glass and the screams and laughs of a child appeared and the Bungalow entered a state of disrepair.

Bollywood Blues

I grew up on a very heavy dose of Bollywood, I love Delhi and I am a South Asian historian-in-training. So when a friend recently shared this question from a Bollywood Trivia to me, it wasn’t hard for me to answer. In fact, it was so delightful, it made me realize how much I love all three: Bollywood, Delhi and History. It felt like an reaffirmation of who I am and my life’s journey in a time where this pandemic, political upheavals and emotional anxiety has made me feel like I’m sinking in quicksand. Here’s the question:

X derives its name from the Persian Dur-e-be-baha, which translates as “unparalled pearl.”This is in reference to its history as a popular market for precious stones precious stones and gold and silver jewellery, especially under the reign of the 17th century Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. The location witnessed the bloody massacre of Delhi in March 1739, ordered by the Persian invader Nadir Shah, when hundreds of innocent civilians and soldiers were killed and the gold shops were looted....Y was appointed as the poet tutor of Bahadur Shah Zafar II and the royal historian of the Mughal court. After his death in 1869 he was buried near the tomb of Nizamuddin Auliya. His honorific titles include Dabir-ul-Mulk, Najm-ud-Daula, His house in locality Z has now been turned into a museum/memorial. X and Z are very close to eachother, within a kilometer. This made me pull up a map of purani Dilli again and reminisce my forays into the crowded streets of Delhi which are perhaps lost for now to the pandemic. Dariba Kalan leading into Kinari Bazaar, leading to paranthe wali galli and then to Ballimaran. I thought about Sis gunj sahib and Bangla Sahib, the trimmed geometric gardens of Lutyens’ Delhi, the musty smell of old files, Andhra Bhawan. Memory lends itself well to literary reproduction because to remember is after all the desire to recreate and relive something. When we write literary things, we constitute ourselves. Of memories altogether, memories of Bollywood are too many. As Bollywood keeps maturing (Thappad was amazing) so do I. So an arcaheology of my encounters with Bollywood is an archaeology of my self. They will tell you as much about me, as they do about the nature of memory itself and some very common South Asian expectations that need to be dismantled. In dark times, with a hint of sarcasm, and a fair bit of laughing at myself and the circusmstances, let me try to break patterns of some engrained expectations so here goes:

When I was 4, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun came out I got hooked to Didi Tera Dewar Diwana. Imagine a child singing the song in toddler-speak. It must have endeared my father’s friend so much that he bought a cassette of the movie’s soundtrack and sent it to us through the post. As I grew older, I wouldn’t miss watching the movie when it came on TV. There is no way that Suraj Barjatya’s, low conflict, song heavy, family-centric, conservative, misogynist dramas have not shaped my ideas of a good life. In fact, if you ask me to watch one right now, I will. But I think the untenability of the families, relationships and the circumstances that they show are increasingly stark. It is obvious that no one, and certainly I cannot perform the emotional and physical labor expected of  women and men in any patriarchal system. Even if I could, life throws one thing after the other, no one remains naive and who can possibly believe that years can go without any kind of conflict and frustration. So here we are, certain that no one is visiting Ram Tikri, and no one is getting engaged in the span of two days. That makes no sense. 

When I was 8, Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai came out. My cousin and I watched it together on a VHS cassette player and we were hooked. This was a time when small shops in Kathmandu allowed you to rent out VHS cassettes of latest releases for a couple of days, I think 3 days. My cousin and I became quick friends with a VHS shop guy in Kamal Pokhari and he allowed us to rent out Kuch Kuch Hota Hai for about 8-9 times until we learned all the dialogues. Whenever the movie came on TV, my cousin would call me up to let me know it was on TV. The movie was neoliberal India’s offering to South Asia of branded clothes, complications in boy-girl friendships in a modern co-educational context, foreign scenes, etc. Like Dil Wale Dulhania Le Jaayenge, this was a story of how if everyone was rich enough to go to summer camp or lived abroad, things would work out fine. Well, it doesn’t. The state of being a migrant even a privileged neoliberal one sucks and bright branded clothes are terrible and if a guy doesn’t like you with short hair, he has no business liking you with long hair, that is just shallow. Stay away. Also, boy-girl friendships do not need to be sacrificed at the alter of romance and to act like an adult is not to throw your dupatta at your best friend’s boo while you run away on a train because you can’t deal with your feelings. 

When I was 10, JP Dutta’s Refugee came out. My mother and my aunts took us children to Gopi Krishna Cinema Hall in Kathmandu. I don’t think Bollywood films had Parental Guidelines and neither did the adults who took us for these films ever understand them but we went to see Refugee in 2000 about a strange cross border relationship. I spotted a guy and a girl from the upper grades in my school together at the movie. This was also right after I started getting my periods. So in the throes of puberty, I developed a major crush on Abhishek Bachchan to everyone’s surprise. I think my 10-12 year old self constantly told I was ugly saw the actor as relatable and “Mere Humsafar” as the ultimate love song. A complicated cross border romance situation still appeals to me and  I still keep an eye out for anything that has Abhishek Bachchan (apparently he has a new TV show on Amazon prime and caught COVID 19) and I continue have a thing for men with beards. But I also know that splitting my life in different locations is not my idea of fun. I don’t want to be torn between here and there so here I am coming to terms with untenability of transnational relationships, definitely not in the time of a pandemic. 

Some movies between 2000 and 2007 that I can vividly remember watching include Dil Chahta Hai,  3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti etc. But it was Jab We Met with its witty dialogues, its upbeat tenor and its fantastic songs that became a favourite. Like many women, I must have imagined myself as Geet. I wonder whether my recurrent desire to teach at an Indian boarding school years later in my life was because of those heart wrenching scenes of Geet teaching in Shimla while nursing a heartbreak. But here is the deal, as someone who spent the prime of my life in North India, let me tell you, you will find annoying people on trains. Missing a train in the middle of nowhere is not going to lead you to a grand love story and you shouldn’t expect millionaires to save you. In fact, no one will save you from anything, especially not emotional wounds from shitty relationships and you shouldn’t either. If ever you choose to teach at a boarding school in the Indian hills (or a residential summer school for that matter) or continue school wherever you are, you can find ways to take care of yourself and enjoy life, watch Bollywood and be an adult and be happy.

Hope Cooke (born June 24, 1940) is an American who was the "Gyalmo" (Tibetan: རྒྱལ་མོ་, Wylie: rgyal mo) (Queen Consort) of the 12th Chogyal (King) of Sikkim, Palden Thondup Namgyal.[1] Their wedding took place in March 1963. She was termed Her Highness The Crown Princess of Sikkim and became the Gyalmo of Sikkim at Palden Thondup Namgyal's coronation in 1965.[2]

Palden Thondup Namgyal (23 May 1923 – 29 January 1982) was the 12th and last Chogyal (king) of the Kingdom of Sikkim.

At six, he became a student at St. Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong, but had to terminate his studies due to attacks of malaria. From age eight to eleven he studied under his uncle, Rimpoche Lhatsun, in order to be ordained a Buddhist monk; he was subsequently recognised as the reincarnated leader of both Phodong and Rumtek monasteries. He later continued his studies at St. Joseph's Collegein Darjeeling and finally graduated from Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, in 1941. His plans to study science at Cambridge were dashed when his elder brother, the crown prince, a member of the Indian Air Force was killed in a plane crash in 1941.

Namgyal served as adviser for internal affairs for his father, Sir Tashi Namgyal, the 11th Chogyal, and led the negotiating team which established Sikkim's relationship to India after independence in 1949. He married Samyo Kushoe Sangideki in 1950, a daughter of an important Tibetan family of Lhasa, and together they had two sons and a daughter. Samyo Kushoe Sangideki died in 1957.

The Kingdom of Sikkim (Classical Tibetan and Sikkimese: འབྲས་ལྗོངས། Drenjong), earlier known as Dremoshong (Classical Tibetan and Sikkimese: འབྲས་མོ་གཤོངས།, official name until 1800s), was a hereditary monarchy from 1642 to 16 May 1975 in the Eastern Himalayas. It was ruled by Chogyals of the Namgyal dynasty. Under the 1861 Treaty of Tumlong Sikkim became a British protectorate, then an Indian protectorate in 1950.[4]

Although very small and having few resources, King Namgyal was actually quite successful at improving his tiny country. During his rather brief reign, while most people still lived very modestly by western standards, Sikkim became relatively better off than its neighbors. The literacy rate and per capita income in the Kingdom of Sikkim was double that in India, Bhutan and Nepal. Things were improving, Sikkim was doing well and becoming more educated and more productive under its new monarch. King Namgyal had been the leader of those who negotiated the normalization of relations between India and Sikkim when India became independent. Previously, the British Empire had maintained the same sort of relationship it had with most of the other numerous kings, princes, rajas and so forth of the region. He knew that things would be different after Indian independence and he was not wrong about that.”

In 1959 Cooke was a freshman majoring in Asian Studies at Sarah Lawrence College and sharing an apartment with actress Jane Alexander. She went on a summer trip to India and met Palden Thondup Namgyal, Crown Prince of Sikkim, in the lounge[9] of the Windamere Hotel in Darjeeling, India. He was a recent widower with two sons and a daughter and, at age 36, nearly twice her age. They were drawn to each other by the similar isolation of their childhoods. Two years later, in 1961, their engagement was announced, but the wedding was put off for more than a year because astrologers in both Sikkim and India warned that 1962 was an inauspicious year for marriages.[1]

On March 20, 1963, Cooke married Namgyal in a Buddhist monastery in a ceremony performed by fourteen lamas. Wedding guests included members of Indian royalty, Indian and Sikkimese generals, and the U.S. Ambassador to India, John Kenneth Galbraith.[1] Cooke renounced her United States citizenship as required by Sikkim's laws and also as a demonstration to the people of Sikkim that she was not an "American arm" in the Himalayas.[10] She was dropped from the Social Register but the marriage was reported in National Geographic magazine. The New Yorker followed the royal couple on one of their yearly trips to America.[1] Although her husband was Buddhist, Cooke did not officially convert from Christianity to Buddhism though she had practiced Buddhism from an early age on (as Henry Kissinger once remarked "she has become more Buddhist than the population").[11][12][5] Namgyal was crowned monarch of Sikkim on April 4, 1965. However, their marriage faced strains, and both had affairs, he with a married Belgian woman, and she with an American friend.[1][13]

At the same time, Sikkim was under strain due to annexation pressures from India. 

In 1975, allegations of discrimination against Nepali Hindus in Sikkim led to resentment against the Chogyal.[5][6] Their instigation led to Indian Army personnel moving into Gangtok. According to Sunanda K. Datta-Ray of The Statesman, the army killed the palace guards and surrounded the palace in April 1975.[4][dead link]

After disarming the palace, a referendum on the monarchy was held, in which the Sikkimese people overwhelmingly voted to abolish the monarchy, and the new parliament of Sikkim, led by Kazi Lhendup Dorjee, proposed a bill for Sikkim to become an Indian state, which was promptly accepted by the Government of India.[7][4]

Cooke's husband was deposed on April 10, 1975 and confined to his palace under house arrest.[15] The couple soon separated. Cooke returned to Manhattan, where she raised her children, Palden and Hope Leezum.[16] In May 1975 Representative James W. Symington (D-MO) and Senator Mike Mansfield (D-MT) sponsored private bills to restore her citizenship;[17] however, after the bill passed the Senate, several members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration objected, and the bill had to be amended to grant her only U.S. permanent resident status before it could gain their support and pass Congress.[10][18] President Gerald Ford signed the bill into law on June 16, 1976.[19] By 1981 she still had not been able to regain U.S. citizenship.[20] The royal couple divorced in 1980, and Namgyal died of cancer in 1982 in New York City.[21][22][23][24][25]

With child support from Namgyal and an inheritance from her grandparents, she rented an apartment in Yorkville, Manhattan. This time around, she felt "profoundly displaced" in the city and started going on walking tours and then creating her own.[26] She studied Dutch journals, old church sermons, and newspaper articles to acquaint herself with the city and lectured on the social history of New York. She wrote a weekly column, "Undiscovered Manhattan", for The Daily News. Her books include an award-winning memoir of her life in Sikkim, Time Change: An Autobiography (1981), an off-the-beaten-path guide to New York, Seeing New York,[27] developed from her walking tours, and, with Jacques d'Amboise, she published Teaching the Magic of Dance.[8]

Hope Cooke lived in London for a few years before returning to the United States, where she now lives in Brooklyn and currently works as a writer, historian, and lecturer.[8] She was a consultant for PBS's New York: A Documentary Film (1999–2001).[29] Cooke is a regular contributor to book reviews and magazines and also lectures widely.
