And here we have the winner of my hotvillagepoll, voted by six people including me: Once Upon a Time.
To the only one who voted Fall Out: You have my eternal love.
My poll isn't that fancy and I have no prize to give, but I'm sure our winner already has all of our hearts.
I voted Once Upon a Time because my subconscious wouldn't let me vote anything else. That episode made me realize I would trust McGoohan completely as an artist.
Once upon a time, my little sister was sick, she was barely one year old. I sat next to her bed and she was so calm, as if she was an adult. For the first time in my life, looking at her face, I knew there was something beyond pain, beyond suffering, beyond sickness. When I watched Once Upon a Time, I saw that fever again, except that boys usually have higher fever than girls, and McGoohan was just a volcano. But I also saw that look I saw on my sister's face, a long time ago.
And now I have to say my (n)ever-ending hiatus is back. It's gonna be hard but I know my inner Number One is still waiting for me at the end of this blog. So, let me say it once again: Be seeing you.

Here's the hotvillagepoll to find the best The Prisoner episode, which I hope wouldn't just end up with less votes than the number of episodes in this series.
Other polls in this round can be found under #round 1 tag on this blog.
Propaganda
Free for All: This episode really has it all. A political allegory at heart, so condensed, so heavy and yet so fresh and never a bore. There's only one thing that can match McGoohan's strong screen presence and that's his equally strong writing. It leaves you wanting for more. But he was already working like ten jobs on that film set and probably everyone else just wanted him to go home and let them rest for a moment. Also no one would give him the money after The Prisoner. So we'll have to be content with what we have now.

The General: Have you ever just predicted ChatGPT? Have you ever been a whistleblower? Have you ever hated studying? Do you know if someone else is a fake (not in a John Cassavetes movie kind of fake but a real fake)? Have you ever heard the call to freedom? On the beach at night. Even though I would love even the most trivial things when they are delivered to me by Patrick McGoohan, I just don't think there are any such things. Are there?

Anyone still remembers hotvillagepoll? Today it's the day of the quarter-final. That means you get to see the worst propaganda ever written again. I don't know if I should feel bad about the small number of votes or happy that only a few people have to read my propaganda.
Other polls in this round can be found under #quarter-final tag on this blog.
Propaganda
Once Upon a Time: I lived and died many times during this episode. From the moment I saw it until today I still can't make sense of what happened to me. It was painful, but it was beautiful. And have I ever seen any other actor who is willing to give a TV audience that much of himself? No. Did I become his fan at that moment? Probably not in my mind, I was still resisting the fact that he could possess such a talent. But in my heart, I was his fan, yes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Schizoid Man: Impersonating an elite spy is a lot easier than you think. Everything you need is in the files. So when did it go wrong? It's Patrick McGoohan you are dealing with. As one of the greatest actors of his generation, he could make anyone look like a parody of themselves, including himself. We still don't really know who Number Six is beside that he was a spy. But McGoohan playing the role is enough to make it so unique you would feel like there can't be any other Number Six in the world.

hotvintagepoll impresses me so much that I have decided to create a hotvillagepoll to find the best The Prisoner episode.
Round 1 starts today (I hope I can post all the polls of this round today because honestly this idea just came to me like an hour ago) and each round lasts for one week except for the last round. The last round will last for one day only.
Propaganda
Arrival: Arrival is such a perfect episode, it had not only to impress the TV execs but also to introduce a career-defining image of Patrick McGoohan to the unspecting TV audience that they couldn't dream of in their wildest dreams. He entered the show with a thunder and wouldn't leave with anything less than a rocket. Within the first ten minutes of Arrival, I knew he would become a legend, there was no doubt of that. I would like to say something about the profound meaning of the story that starts with his episode too, but I'm too silly for that so I would just leave it to Number Six.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fall Out: This episode is the pride and joy of any unmutual in the world. Some people would want it removed from its place in TV history but it's there to stay. Haters are gonna hate, but look Patrick McGoohan in the eyes and you'll know why he's the Number One in this business. A masterpiece that gave birth to many other works which came after it. A dynamite of an episode and an everlasting source of inspiration. Let's just put it this way: He came, he saw, he SLAYED.

The final round of hotvillagepoll is finally here. It will last only one day because it could be painful for some people (I mean me). Thank you for voting in this poll, even though as a McGoohan fan, you probably couldn't care less about him winning anything.
I hope you've had time to look back at all the beautiful memories (or the psychological damages) this show has brought you. And I hope after the final is over, no one will remember my silly propaganda.

Propaganda
A. B. and C.: What makes a man if not his dreams? What breaks a man if not his dreams? The village authority finally had a taste of what it's like, trying to break into McGoohan's inner world. They wouldn't have made that mistake if they had asked any journalist for advice first. Anyway, I think I just totally forgot my point: If we are all living in a simulation, then at least let us say "My dream is my own".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A Change of Mind: I have never thought of myself as an unmutual, I have always tried to fit in, and I still do (even though I'm not doing it for myself). But sometimes I really feel like all of us are unmutuals, we just don't know it. Maybe this episode should be taught in school, because I don't remember ever being taught to be myself there.

Living in Harmony: You want a cowboy who doesn't like his job? You want a cowboy who is actually a prisoner on an island in Wales? You want the most handsome but also the grumpiest cowboy you could possibly ask for? You want a sci-fi finale on top? SAY NO MORE. I only knew McGoohan as villains before this and maybe he just wanted to have fun playing cowboy. But he put down his gun. And that makes him a hero to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do Not Forsake Me Oh My Darling: This one hardly has any McGoohan in it (which could be nice if you don't want to be fired by him on your first day on the job). But you get to know that Number Six also exists outside of his job, he used to have a life. And it means something to him.

Checkmate: Was Number Six betrayed by his fellow? Or did he ask for what was too much to ask for? How many people would it take to bring down the village? And how many people would it take to make Number Six lose hope? Is there any difference between the village and the world which he resigned from, or the world he wants to return to?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's Your Funeral: Well, this one got everyone a little confused. But to be honest, being confused or not doesn't mean much in The Prisoner's universe. So enjoy the fact that you don't have to be confused on set like our Number Two was and try to follow the plot, if that's what you want to do watching The Prisoner.

Many Happy Returns: Where is he escaping from? Where is he escaping to? Is there anything left for him in the world? What is his world? Who is he? Who are his friends? Who are his enemies? No one really knows. I wonder if Number Six knows. Kafka would get a kick out of this. Well, me too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Chimes of Big Ben: It's only the second episode and the village authority has already identified Number Six's weakness. As he stoically accepted his fate in the end (not before narrowly avoiding disclosing his secret), we caught a fleeting glimpse of how tired he was, and not just physically. If I had questioned why he resigned in the first episode, I stopped doing that after the second. He is capable of being a human and he might have as many secrets as any of us.

Of course I haven't forgotten that it's the semi-final of hotvillagepoll today.
Sorry for the lack of promotion of my poll, I guess being a McGoohan fan has completely messed up my understanding of popularity. But it's St. Patrick's Day so with enough of luck and drinks people will mistake it for hotvintagepoll and vote.

Hammer into Anvil: Number Six fights back. And he does that in style. I could use this episode to explain some of my fear of McGoohan. No wonder why some people think that Number Six was planted. But they miss the point that you don't need to be the boss to be stronger. You just need to be the unbreakable Patrick McGoohan, I guess.

Dance of the Dead: Peter Pan made an appearance in The Prisoner and I'm all for it. What's all that for? Well, it's for me and my Number Six, who would play an equally beautiful role in this children's story. Someone who does not belong in our world. Someone who would leave us behind calling after him, to fly away, to a new generation of The Prisoner fans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Girl Who Was Death: McGoohan could probably turn this into a Columbo episode if he wanted to. I would say it had the McGoohan kind of fun if I only knew what the McGoohan kind of fun even is. Anyway we don't get to see a lot of McGoohan comedies and that's a shame so let's enjoy whatever we have.
