Jamie McGuire: The Smiley Creature from "From," with some Halifax hunks
From, starring Harold Perrineau of Lost, is set in the ruins of a small town, with a diner, a police station, a hotel, a farm, and some houses, where stranded travelers from various parts of the U.S. get stuck. Every night humanoid creatures appear, dressed in 1950s costumes -- mechanic, nurse, librarian, tv cowboy. They try to lure you outside, or trick you into letting them in, whereupon they turn into monsters and kill you.
The Creatures are the main threat, and one of the biggest mysteries, in From. They are impervious to most weapons, but they don't have paranormal powers. Their physiology is human, but dessicated, as if they've been mummified. They were once regular humans: a Creature named Jasmine says "I didn't ask to be this way." My theory is that some sort of dark magic went wrong during the 1950s, zapping the town into a pocket universe and transforming some of the townsfolk into Creatures.
Jamie McGuire's Smiley Creature has become a fan favorite, due to his especially huge, creepy grin and his quirky personality: he seems delighted to be part of the world again. He feels furniture, picks up objects. He climbs aboard a stalled bus and plays at driving it.
If it weren't for the creepy grin, Jamie would be quite handsome, so I wanted to know more about him.
He's been interviewed a dozen times, but mostly about the Smiley Creature -- and he doesn't know any more than we do. He just puts on a creepy grin and follows the director's instructions.
Researching Jamie McGuire turns out to be extremely difficult. A Google search yields 3,000 entries about a romance novelist named Jamie McGuire, mostly reviewing two of her books that have been made into movies, Beautiful Disaster and Beautiful Wedding. Dylan Sprouse stars as an inked bad boy boxer.
Instagram and Facebook are equally fruitless. Lots of posts and photos of that romance novelist, an addiction recovery counselor, an English footballer, a fitness model, and a MMA fighter.
So we're stuck with the IMDB, which has no biographical information, and only four acting roles:
A Neanderthal in the documentary Neanderthal Apocalypse, 2015
An unspecified role in the comedy Hopeless Romantic, 2018, a local production filmed near the director's home in Newfoundland.
A background performer in Kids v. Aliens, 2022, a local production filmed near the director's home in Nova Scotia.
And From, which is filmed in Newfoundland.

Jamie's resume and a few headshots are available online. He studied acting in Peterborough and Toronto. No college listed. He's multilingual in English, French, Spanish, and Italian
In addition to the IMDB listings, he has performed in commercials for Beecham Cough Syrup, Stillwater Beer Garden in Nova Scotia, and a credit union.
But until he starts an interview with "I was born in..." Jamie McGuire will continue to be as much of a mystery as the Smiley Creature.
The full post, with some Halifax hunks, is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends

part 8 / previous installments/tags
Anaheim keeps him Mason up after camp. It’s different than playing in Europe. Everything’s faster, and more guys are alphas. It’s a process, learning to take advantage of scent while keeping all his other skills sharp. He blows his assignment a couple of times, completely losing track of some beta who doesn’t smell like anything.
For Mason’s first few games, Trevor’s the only omega on the ice. He laughs it all off, all of the chirps and the cross-checks, everyone who shoves him around. Des does his job as enforcer, but their other alphas – Getzy, Hamp, Commer, Fowler, Manson, Grant – leave things to Jamie. His omega, his problem.
Jamie doesn’t get into it with opposing players too much. Once he takes a slashing penalty and explains to Mason later that the other guy was smelling some kind of way about Trevor.
Mason gets used to an NHL locker room, but the level of filth that comes out in the chirping when they play Buffalo and Montreal still manages to surprise him. He’s not sure why guys don’t chirp Trevor that way, telling him all the things they’d make him do, all the ways he’d take their knot. It’s not because anybody respects Trevor. Mason loves him, but Trevor’s objectively way more annoying than Caufield and Skinner.
He asks Getz about it, and his answer is typically curt. “Unbonded,” Getzy says. “It’s not personal.”
sorry you got sent down, Connor texts him after Mason reaches his ninth game and coach calls him in for the conversation. Wj?
lfg, Mason types. He wonders if they’ll let him room with Connor again at world juniors. It’s surprising to remember how salty he was about getting paired with Connor last time. Now they text like every day. Connor’s got questions, and Mason sends him pictures of all the stuff that makes him think holy shit, I’m really in the NHL. Like the steak salads, or all the different kinds of shampoo in the shower. It doesn’t feel like bragging the way it would if Mason was talking to one of his other friends, not when it’s so obvious that Connor’s going to make it.
He doesn’t tell Connor about presenting. It’s just a weird thing to say over text. And it’s not like he’s telling anyone else, anyway.
Back in the OHL, it feels like he’s missing a finger. He’s figured out how to use his nose, and now it might as well be cut off. There’s nothing to smell. His coaches are all betas. On the ice, none of his teammates has presented. Off the ice, he’s still in a mask (thanks, Canada). In the handful of games he plays with Peterborough, he doesn’t encounter any overagers on the other team. Just a couple of alpha coaches as he flies past the opposing bench. By the time selection camp starts, he’s used to being under the radar.
It doesn’t work that way with Team Canada.
An assistant coach takes Mason aside in the lobby of their hotel in Calgary. Under a chandelier bristling with antlers, the coach’s nostrils flare as he inspects Mason. “We had you with Bedard again.” He runs his thumb down the stack of keycards in his hand, making the paper sleeves buzz. “We’ll have to switch you up.”
“Why?” Mason tries to make it sound like a question and not an objection.
“Now that you’ve presented.” The coach draws himself upward, trying to compensate for Mason’s height advantage. “Best to have you with another alpha.”
“You don’t have to do that.” It’s not like he’s going to fight Connor. Even if he did, Connor could give as good as he gets, just like he always has with Mason.
The coach sizes him up. His worn leather scent is faintly perceptible through Mason’s mask. “You’re not gonna cause any problems for us?”
“No, of course not.” Connor’s probably going to be an alpha anyway, if that’s what the coaches care about. What problems could he possibly cause by rooming with him now?
“Make sure of it.” The coach hands him a key.
Connor gets off the elevator as Mason is about to get on. “Hey.” He gives Mason the closest thing he has to a smile, which means that the curl of his lip gets a little more pronounced for a moment. Then he gives Mason a hug.
The familiar scent rushes straight to Mason’s head. He might as well not be wearing a mask. How fucking dumb is he? It wasn’t their hotel room. It’s Connor who smells like fresh ice, cedar planks, cold steel. Mason breathes in and the word appears in his head unbidden: omega.
Which doesn’t make any sense. This isn’t what omegas smell like. Omegas smell like watermelon or violets or grape jelly, sweet and boring.
And he hasn’t heard anything about Connor being an omega. It would be big news, if Canada’s next phenom was an omega. Something would have come across Mason’s twitter. Maybe Mason’s wrong. Connor’s so young. He shouldn’t smell like anything yet. Maybe something’s messed up. Something’s wrong with Mason’s nose, like an allergic reaction to hotels or something. Or maybe something’s wrong with Connor. Mason resolves not to fuck anything up. He’s not even going to think about it.
“You okay?” Connor pats Mason’s chest, trying to step back from the hug.
“Yeah, just.” Mason drops his arms, dazed. “Long flight.”
“Want to ditch your stuff?” Connor hits the elevator button as he’s asking.
“Sure.” Mason inhales so hard the edges of his mask crumple against his face. The elevator is full of Connor’s icy scent. Their room’s going to smell like heaven. Their room’s going to put Mason through hell.

Not an exhaustive list, but for any Brits who see this, there's expected rioting tonight in:
Cleveland, Thornaby. Likely to be at the mosque in Westbury Street at ~5pm
Durham. Both in the city centre and apparently at the Bishop Auckland Town Hall.
Leicestershire, Coalville. Potentially starting at the clock tower.
Manchester. Potentially the police station in Salford.
Peterborough. Some talk about gathering outside the prison.
Rochdale. Outside the Broadfield Hotel on Sparrow Hill.
Scunthorpe. Reports of it starting at Scunthorpe Museum on Oswald Street moving off to Frodingham Road. Late to posting this as reports said it would start at 12.
Sheffield. The Holiday Inn is a suspected target. I believe it's off of Victoria Station Road.
Stoke-on-Trent. Potentially at the Best Western Hotel on Audley Road.
Also in Northern Ireland, there's expected to be one at Chimney Corner in Belfast, and in Newton Abbey.

500 jobs to be created at new Home Office hub in Stoke-on-Trent

Five hundred new, high quality jobs will be created at a new Home Office hub in Stoke-on-Trent, which the Home Secretary Suella Braverman opened on Thursday 22nd June). The new office space in the heart of the city at Two Smithfield in Hanley has been created thanks to £7 million of government funding and support through Stoke-on-Trent’s £56 million allocation through the Levelling Up Fund. The Levelling Up Fund aims to create opportunities and drive growth in every region of the UK. The site will be home to a new Asylum Casework Hub which will help to significantly speed up asylum decision-making by improving case working capacity and efficiency. The Hub will be staffed by up to 330 new asylum caseworkers and bring all national asylum correspondence into one place. The Hub will play an important role in the government’s plans to reduce numbers being housed in costly hotels and cut the burden of the asylum system on taxpayers. It will add to the 1,280 caseworkers already in post and help to clear the backlog of legacy asylum cases by the end of 2023. Home Secretary Suella Braverman said: I’m pleased to be opening this new site in Stoke which will see the creation of 500 high-quality local jobs. Located in the heart of the city, it will help cut the burden of the asylum system on taxpayers, while also bringing huge benefits to the region. Through the creation of these jobs, we are showing our continued commitment to driving growth and opportunity across the UK. The Home Office has partnered with Stoke-on-Trent City Council to ensure the new investment has a long-lasting impact on the local community, with local students and job seekers being actively encouraged to apply for the new jobs now available at the Hub. The opening is another step in the Home Office’s Places for Growth programme, which aims to relocate civil servants out of the capital to ensure it better reflects the nations and regions it serves. The Home Office has already relocated 2,229 roles to Places for Growth locations, exceeding the original commitment to relocate 1950 roles by 2030. The 18 locations are: Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, Liverpool, Southport, Manchester, Salford, Leeds, Sheffield, Birmingham, Solihull, Peterborough, Glasgow, Cardiff, Newport, Belfast and Edinburgh. Home Office Permanent Secretary Sir Matthew Rycroft said: This new Hub is an important part of our vision to harness the talent and skill of people from across the whole of the UK, by relocating more than 2,200 of our staff out of London and the South East by 2025. I am delighted that more people from Stoke-on-Trent will have the opportunity join the Home Office. Their skills and talent will help tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the UK, including clearing the asylum backlog. Not only will the Stoke office support effective working across government, it will bring growth and jobs too. Read the full article
