A magnificent Baule male figure, Ivory Coast In the first years of the twentieth century the painter Georges de Miré was one of the very first collectors of African art. Part of his collection was presented in and exhibition in 1923, Indigenous Art of the French Colonies, at the Pavillon de Marsan in Paris. Included in the exhibition were selections from the collections of André Lhote, Burty Havilland, the writers Jean Giraudoux and Félix Fénéon, and the dealers and collectors Paul Guillaume, Bela Hein, Anthony Morris and Jean Hessel. This exhibition was the first idea of the scale of interest in African art in Paris, and was an immense success. The Georges de Miré collection was sold at the Hotel Drouot on December 16, 1931, with experts Charles Ratton and Louis Carré. The majority of pieces were considered 'absolute masterpieces' (Paudrat in Rubin, 1984: vol. I, 163). Of particular note is the Fang figure, acquired by Jacob Epstein, today in the Dapper Museum, Paris (Dapper, 1997: 97-100), and the Dogon figure, acquired by Ratton and Carré, and later by Jacob Epstein, also in the Dapper Museum (Dapper, 1994: 82). Georges Henri Rivière, who wrote the introduction to the auction catalog, concluded, ' Would you like to know the depth of my thoughts... A disappointment that the Trocadero (The Ethnographic Museum of the Trocodero, renamed The Musée de L'Homme in 1938) was not rich enough to acquire this magnificent collection en masse' (Rivière: 1931, III). The Morigi Baule figure is one of the very beautiful objects from Georges de Miré collection. The figure is unusual for the manner in which this artist has magnified the criteria the Baule use in judging beauty in a sculpture: the balance of the pose, the exceptional tension of the lines, the exaggerated elongation of the neck, and the great detail in the precisely carved coiffure as well as the overall refinement and delicacy in the carving. Located between Albertville and Bourg Saint Maurice, the Roselend Valley is a paradise for the lovers of the outdoors. The roads are nice and winding and they’re surrounded by fields of natural flowers, waterfalls and flowing streams of water.

In the middle of the valley sits the water dam with the stunning mountain peak overlooking at it. Whether you love mountain walking, hiking, road cycling or mountain biking or just lover of traveling through breathtaking landscapes, this is one place not to be missed.

This was captured in the Alps of France at the stunning Cormet de Roselend, with it’s water dam, waterfalls and breathtaking landscape. Marmots are popular in the Alps and at this time of the year they are really nice and fluffy after the winter season.

WHERE TO STAY:

There aren’t many places to stay up in the valley, but just below getting to the top, there are a few villages that have accommodation available, one of which is Areches Beaufort. Once at the top however, overlooking the dam, is the Chalet de Roselend , a warm and welcoming family run hotel, situated with the most breathtaking views.      The Chalet de Roselend provides a very comfortable stay with breathtaking window and balcony views that make you really feel part of the stunning natural environment. The family owners and staff are very friendly and you feel like you’re at home immediately. The food is very tasty, with a set menu of local specialities and products from the region.                                                             

 (Wikipedia: “The Roselend Dam is an arch-buttress dam located 5 km (3 mi) east of Beaufort in the Savoie department of the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It is located just west and below the Cormet de Roselend mountain pass. The dam was designed by Coyne et Bellier and construction began in 1955. The reservoir began to fill in 1960, the power station was operational in 1961 and the dam complete in 1962. It was constructed for the primary purpose of hydroelectric power generation and supports the 546 MW La Bâthie Power Station.“)
