the other week someone comes into reception at the office and asks if she can hotdesk somewhere so i direct her to an empty room. & then later one of my co-workers comes in and is like 'who is that working in the break room' and i'm like uhhh. bcos while i absolutely did recognise her i'm now realising that i can't remember who she is.
so he's like 'does she work for us' and i'm like oh yeah she works here i'm just forgetting her name and anyway it turned out he was just asking bcos they had leftover food and didn't want to offer it to a perfect stranger.
anyway today my coworker (different from above. direct coworker) comes in and is like 'we are probably going to close the office tomorrow bcos of the storm but someone has a meeting booked in and we don't know who she is' so i opened up the calendar and it was the same Mystery Coworker as before fkdjgfjkg apparently i'm the only person who knows this woman works for us

The tumblr post that I got this from seems to have turned off reblogs, so I'm sharing it separately.
(There was some pushback on that one, which is fine, but I'm going to bounce off of this to talk about my own experience.)
Most of my adult life has been spent in San Francisco, where there's been a blatant split between two groups of people around my age, early Millenials. The first have been working part time service sector jobs -- because their workplaces do not have those positions available as full time jobs -- and are barely clinging on, often dependent on partners earning more or living with parents or something along those lines, and when they can't do that they leave San Francisco, either to distant suburbs or out of the Bay Area entirely. And people working full time professional jobs, typically in tech, who for the most part do fine. (Although. Who also have shockingly little job security compared to people in similarly well-paying jobs in my parents' generation. And who often rent rather than own.)
Counting people working part time jobs as "employed" but also not counting what they earn for the median wage is clearly ludicrous, OK? You gotta do one or the other. And going "hey the techies are able to afford stuff, so why are the waiters complaining" is also clearly ludicrous, right?
People talk about the Great Recession and that's a good thing to talk about, and goodness knows things got worse then, but things were actually pretty bad before then too, for people who weren't able to get full time office jobs. (I'm not sure about like electricians and stuff, people with full time non-office jobs that require specific training, I don't have many of them in my social circles.) I had a lot of experiences of just being really demotivated to apply for jobs because I knew anything I could get was not going to pay enough for me to afford to live on my own. There were jobs wanting people to work for like 15 hours a week on an unpredictable schedule for about $8/hr. In one of the most expensive cost of living cities in the country.
And generally the people I knew had relatively decent options (counting things like still living with parents in a nice house at 30 a decent option, counting moving back to the homophobic hellhole you moved out of as a decent option) the people who didn't were renting shared apartments and essentially hotdesking the beds. When people talk about Americans not taking certain jobs, you should be asking "are the people who do take these jobs able to afford their own bedroom? Are the people who take these jobs going to ever in their lifetimes be able to support a family that are living in the same country that they're working?"
(I mean here look I don't want deportations! But "we shouldn't deport immigrants because Americans won't take those jobs anyways" is a terrible argument. Americans will take jobs that pay well enough. If your industry will collapse if it can't keep exploiting extremely vulnerable and desperate people, maybe there's something wrong with your industry.)

Hi, I’ve a bit of a situation at work. I just joined my new department in December, and I found out that we’re hotdesking. Meaning desks are first come first served. We have two groups A & B, within the department. I’m in A. When I first came in I picked a desk to sit at that didn’t have any personal belongings on it. So I sat there for the rest of December. There’s this colleague from B who was nice to me for the first few weeks. And she mentioned that she used to sit at the desk I was at. I didn’t think anything of it cos she made it sound like a casual comment. And then in the first week of January, I came to work and found that that usual table had been taken over by her. Terribly messy. I didn’t make a big deal and sat at another desk. Then the next day when I got to sit at the desk she came over and was really paggro about her things being there (I didn’t touch them) and her having sat there before. I didn’t want to start a fight in the office so I nicely told her I didn’t touch her things while saying that I’m aware we’re hotdesking. She walked off. Over the next week it was tense and she was really cold and ignorant towards me. Then last week, she took over that desk the whole week. I had nowhere to sit but I just took my things and moved to a table far away from my colleagues. She kept walking past my desk on purpose that week. Ultimately, my question is…how do I navigate this if she picks on me in the office again? It’s kinda affecting my mindset when I go into work, and work is already stressful. I also don’t want to be seated away from my colleagues because it affects rapport building and discussions. I’m new, I can’t be seated away from them. One solution is getting to office really early to secure the desk but I hate making this a competition because it’s not! I don’t want to start my day like this fighting with some colleague who thinks she can bully me because I’m new and she’s higher up the pecking order. Would really appreciate your advice, please. :(
its a desk.
Pick another one.
