Ideas for Lots to Fill a Hood

I made a list like this before, and there’s already tons of other ones around the internet just like it. Buuut I can’t stop myself from making useless lists :P

I’m probably just bad at remembering this simple rule, but a hood can become much more realistic if you split up businesses/industry across multiple singularly dedicated lots rather than a single tiny one-stop place (which is how I usually do it).

So I wanted to make a list to remind myself that not only can there be a lot just for clothes, but there can be multiple clothing shops themed in more than one way, like costumes versus lingerie.

Then there’s buildings I listed just for the possible realism they add, like industrial buildings. Some of those may only be possible through hood deco instead of visitable lots, which personally I might overlook without having a list to remind me of the concept. Sooo maybe you’ll find it similarly useful idk

* Jason is someone who lives on the same floor, either next to you or across from you.

* I’ve got two headcanons about neighbor!Jason

* He’s either a friendly neighbor who engages you in small talk whenever you run into each other

* Or he’s incredibly reserved, you hardly ever see him and when you do he enters and leaves his apartment so quick you can’t get a word in

* Overall you don’t really talk to him much

* Honestly you’re probably a little intimidated by him

* He’s like 6’0 and 250 pounds of muscle

* He’s also a beautiful man, so you’re also a bit intimidated by how you’re attracted to him

* Jason barely registers that you’re his neighbor tbh

* So many people filter in and out of these apartments he’s stopped forcing himself to remember their names

* He only notices you when Dick is with him at some point, helping him carry some things from Bruce’s mansion

* “I’m starting to think you’re pretending to need help so you aren’t suffering alone”

* “It took you this long to realize that?”

* You come back from work at this point, in your cutest outfit, you’d had a good day so far

* Riding the wave of confidence you wave at them before disappearing into your apartment

* “They’re pretty cute” Dick whistles, and Jason looks to where you stood

* “I guess” well you did have a pretty face, and every once in a while he can hear your music from his apartment

* It’s always lo-fi beats or something relaxing

* “Do they live alone?” Dick asks, and Jason shrugs

* You’re pretty quite, not many visitors, he likes that. The less people around the better

* “I think they have a dog.” He recalls seeing you walk a dog early in the morning, slightly concerned, this is Gotham after all

* “So no boyfriend?” Jason raises an eyebrow

* “Please don’t date my neighbor Dick.”

* “Why, do you want to be their boyfriend?”

* He shoves another box into Dick’s arms to get him to shut up

* Jason notices you a bit more after that, he notices you when you’re at the mailbox getting your mail, or when you’re climbing up the stairs with bags full of groceries

* Unfortunately everytime he sees you it’s followed with “oh, it’s that person that Dick thinks is cute.”

* Which usually makes him grimace.

* One day though, as he’s getting mail he notices a few of the letters he has have your name on them

* Looks like the mail person got the unit numbers wrong

* He sighs, more human interaction he doesn’t really want

* He’s considering just waiting for the post office worker tomorrow so he can slip it in your box, when he sees you in front of your door

* “Hey, I got your mail by accident” he says, sticking out the package. You grasp it with both hands

* Jason can’t help but think about how small your hands are compared to his

* well, someone would surely find that a little cute

* He doesn’t realize he’s staring until a finger digs into the corner, ripping open the plastic.

* “Oh cool, I’ve been waiting for the book for a while, thanks so much!”

* The smile you give him should be illegal

* He can feel his face grow hot, as he nods

* “N-no problem” he mumbles, escaping into apartment.

* It doesn’t really bother you, you go into your own apartment, excited to start your new book

* The back of Jason’s head rests against his front door

* Okay he gets it now, yeah you are pretty cute

* After that things get a bit smoother between you two

* “Is that a new book?”

* “Yeah, I picked it up on my way home, I’ve been meaning to read it for a while”

* “That ones okay, but I like the one the author wrote before better.”

* Jason’s pretty well read, so you two end up mostly talking about books

* “If you want I can write you some recommendations”

* “Sure I would love that!”

* And here comes that smile again, Jason’s not a Virgin, so he doesn’t understand why every time you smile his face erupt into flames and he can’t think right

* “I’ll leave it on your door later”

* Talking about books turns into trading books

* “Hey, you wanted to read Murakami’s short stories right?”

* “Oh, Thank you! Also I got your mail haha!”

* Jason’s starting to wonder if the postal worker is trying to set you both up

* “I’m just a little tired”

* Just then a cough escapes him

* “I also have some whisky, if you’re a believer in the medicinal effect of hot toddy’s.”

* Thats how Jason finds himself in your apartment, sitting on your couch, looking at your rather impressive book collection

* He knew you liked to read, but he’s still impressed

* “Here.” You hand him his hot toddy and a coaster

* He takes a sip and grimaces

* “Are you trying to get me drunk?”

* Your face erupts in flames, you honestly weren’t. In truth you were expecting to get rejected. So to see him here, at your apartment, petting your (dog/cat/bird/etc) is pretty surprising

* “I’m kidding” Jason says, noticing you blush “I like them strong too”

* You’re a little nervous that things will get awkward, but Jason’s a pro at the art of conversation (when he wants to be)

* “You like Scott Fitzgerald?”

* From there the conversation falls into books, to music, to things that are deeper

* “I don’t know, I just thought I’d be further ahead by now yknow?” You say, leaning back in the arm chair.

* Jason’s sprawled out on the couch, no longer trying to make himself as small as possible

* “Where did you think you would be?”

* You’re both drinking straight whisky at this point

* “I don’t know, I just never pictured myself spending all my time at a job I hate. Living in an apartment where the floorboards are coming out, and the paint is falling off the ceiling”

* It’s true, the paint does fall off the ceiling. One time the drywall fell off in a clump and landed beside him when he was sleeping.

* “And honestly, I thought I’d at least have a boyfriend”

* Jason’s head pop up to look at you

* He can be your boyfriend

* The words are dancing on his tongue, but what comes out is:

* “Relationships are over rated, I haven’t dated anyone since 2016”

* “2018 for me,” you grin “I can’t tell if that makes me the winner or the loser though”

* You both laugh, and for a moment Jason thinks that you’re just like him, lonely in your own way

* Maybe you can make each other happy

* But he extinguishes the thought as soon as it comes to life

* He doesn’t want to make you uncomfortable in your own home

* And as he takes another swig of whisky, he realizes he might be drunk

* So he lets himself laugh with you, excusing himself once it starts to get late.

* “Hey Jason, I realized I don’t have your number.”

* You give him your phone, and he has to try extra hard to make sure all the numbers are entered correctly

* “Cool, I’ll text you about what time is good for us to go to that book store you mentioned.” You say before closing the door behind you

* Jason doesn’t remember inviting you to his bookstore, but he still finds a grin curling onto his face

* You slide against your closed front door

* Your face is burning, and you feel way more embarrassed then you should

* He just looked so handsome when he was smiling, and he said he hadn’t dated anyone for even longer than you

* It doesn’t help that you had quite a few drinks, so you took a shot

* The worst that could happen was that you would have to laugh it off as wanting to be his friend

* Or wanting to know who his book supplier was

* Both were equally true

* You’re feeling even more embarrassed when you feel you phone buzz

* Jason: Do you have the weekend off? We could go then

Omg yeeessssss Coffee Shop AU are just so wholesome and I love them so much.....

Din-

So for this I imagine you are the one working at the coffee shop, maybe you're in college trying to stay afloat or whatever, but then one day after the nearby preschool got out this handsome ass dad comes in with his adorable little son. He gets a coffee that should kill him, like 12 shots of espresso or something, and gets his son a couple of cake pops and a hot coco

After that they show up more often, and when you ask your co workers you find out they only come when you are working

You and Din make eyes at eachother for AWHILE but neither of you say anything

Then one day you are secluded for the morning shift and you are sad you won't see your two favorites boys, but on the third day of the new shift here both of them come and your morning gets soooo much better

Din shyly lingers after he pays, and tells you that he missed you making their drinks because you always made them the best, and with a blush he hands you a slip of paper with his number and asks if you're free for a date Saturday

Boba-

So again for this one you are the one working at the coffee shop, and Boba runs this big private investigation organization (that several people think is a front for the mob, but you've always laughed that conspiracy off)

Boba is a regular because his office is close to the small shop and he always says that he likes supporting small businesses, but you have never had the chance to wait on him

Then one day, late at night, you were the one closing and everyone had gone home, and you heard the bells jiggle and you groaned because it was so close to closing, but then you saw Boba and he apologized for coming in so late, when he left he tipped you $100

After that night you got put on the closing shift for the foreseeable future, but every night Boba comes in and the two of you talk, the first time you made him laugh you thought your heart stopped, and he always tips you ridiculous amounts

Then one evening he came in and after you asked if he wanted his usual, he shakes his head and with a crooked smile asks if your evening was free

Paz-

So this time you are the owner of a small Cafe in a small town, and Paz is your main supplier and he always makes deliveries every Wednesday around 10 am

You always makes sure you are there to watch him unload everything under the guise of wanting to make sure nothing is missing, but really you just want to watch his muscles work under his tight blue shirt he always wears

You always try and tip him but he always declines so instead you offer a coffee and a pastry on the house, which he can never turn down (he always gets a vanilla chia with cinnamon and he tries a different pastry each week) and you sit with him and just have small conversations

One week Paz doesn't show up, and you instantly get worried, then you hear on the news that 'a local hero was hit by a drunk driver as he was saving a mother dog and her three puppies' and your heart stops when you see them show a picture of Paz and the second they announce where he was you instantly grab a few things and drive there

Once the doctors let you into his room, you walk in with tears, but he's sitting up and smiles as soon as he sees you. He had a broken leg and a concussion, thank God the car wasn't going any faster, and you walk over and hand him the chia with extra cinnamon and slice of strawberry pie, with a shy hi. Paz takes them and sets them on his table before reaching for you and pulling you into a kiss

Armorer (Amara) I know you didn't ask for her but I had an idea so I'm adding her here-

So you own a bookstore/coffee shop that is popular in your small college town and Amara owns a smithing shop where she crafts different things

She often visits in the morning when you have just opened and its only you in the store, she always gets her drink to go and never lingers, but she is always very cordial and nice to you, offering small smiles

You find that she has two boys, not hers, that are going to the college and work for her in her shop, Din and Paz

One day you both got into a conversation and before she left you jokingly asked how much she would charge to make a pretty and ornate dagger and sheath, she had only shot you a smile that had your heart skipping a beat and heat to rise in your face before she left

The two of you talked more after that, but the dagger question was never brought up again. Then one day she shocks you by coming in at closing after everyone had left and setting a beautiful wooden box on the counter before looking at you expectantly. When you opened the box you found a gorgeous dagger and a note, when you looked up at her she only nodded down to the note with a small smile, and when you read the note it said, 'The dagger is free for you, as long as you promise to go on a date with me, as well as promise not to use it on me ;) -Amara

A former Dayton’s pastry chef, Otto Emrich opened the Emrich Baking Company in his basement in 1919.  It works, too - Ty only wants attention when he feels like it, and the dumbass is way too used to getting exactly what he wants - and you grin as you watch Miro Heiskanen make his way over to you at the counter, while big brother glares at you from the table they'd claimed in the far corner. 

 He's wearing a pair of sunglasses indoors like the douche that he truly is, but still. You don't need to see his eyes to know that he's glaring. He's either trying to go incognito or trying to survive a hangover, and he's never fun while doing either things. 

 So you focus on Miro instead, and you focus on annoying him. The kid really is too sweet for his own good. You'd practically be doing him a favour, if you get him to lose his cool for even a moment or two. 

 "Baby, you're not a rookie anymore," you coo at him as he gets closer, mostly because you know it would make him blush, and that works, too. He makes no move to take his hands out of his pockets, though, and you wonder idly how he plans on bringing the coffee back over for Ty. 

 "You don't have to keep letting my brother boss you around," you tell him after a pause, only-half to remind him that he should maybe get to it now that he's already given in, and he gives a shrug - which is probably about as expressive a reaction as he's physically capable of. 

 "Kinda do, he's still got the A," Miro says, and you're just about to protest when you spot the smile playing at the corners of his lips. 

 Point to Miro. 

 As reward, you move away from the cashier counter to the display case right to the side, filling a plate with an apple strudel you know he likes to treat himself with and a small cheese tart. It's a Japanese recipe, adapted where and how you'd felt like it because peanut butter's awesome in pastries and recipes in general are for squares, and you'd been looking for a guinea pig to try them out on. 

 Preferably before you eat the whole batch. 

 He follows you as you move, looking only mildly intrigued, though he fully raises an eyebrow - that's, like, 1.5 expressions in one day! - when you set the plate down in front of him. 

 "You sass my brother, you get a treat," you explain to him, grinning, and it takes him a moment before he smiles back.

 "Okay, sure, thanks," he says, like a free pastry's gone and made his day, and it's so sweet that you think he's trying to give you cavities. Or maybe he's trying to sweet not-talk you into giving him more pastries, and thus the cavities. 

"You trying a new recipe with the tart? I haven't seen it before, I can tell you what I think about it after," he says, because of course he knows your routine by now, and you almost reach out to pat his head - he's too cute. 

 "I'll give you a couple extra if you like them," you promise, because A) he likes almost everything, B) customers at the coffeeshop rarely try a cake or pastry they haven't seen in the display case a couple of times, out of a healthy fear of your more creative recipe-redesigns, and C) you know your brother's good for it. 

 But Miro nods, looking pleased, as though you haven't just done a whole cost-benefit analysis in your head, and you decide to throw in a couple of strudels in his to-go bag later either way. 

 You watch him as he makes his way back to his table, noting that yours isn't the only female head turned in his direction. That's what you get for opening a coffeeshop in a university area, you guess. 

 You know you should be getting back to work, and you tell yourself that you know — but you don't actually do it until you see Miro taking a bite out of the tart. You don't really see how he feels about it, but you do see him smacking Tyler's hand away when Ty reaches for the strudel, and as you turn back to work you're feeling inexplicably pleased.

 "Please  make more strudel, more cheese peanut butter tart," the note in your suggestion box reads. When you'd opened the note a ten dollar bill had dropped out, which you'd always found funny - Miro understands the concept of tipping, kinda. 

 But he'd always include a tip with his suggestions, and it always makes you feel like he's trying to bribe your into making more of whatever it is that he wants. 

 Usually it's the apple strudel, because it's insanely popular and he'd come by after practice a couple of times to find that you're sold out. Those days, he usually leaves in a sulk - and it's funny to you, that you know what Miro in a sulk even looks like. 

 Sometimes it's about one of your new recipes - a comment of critique, or just asking you to keep making more of exactly what you just did. He's a surprisingly good taster, capable of figuring out if you'd tweaked your recipes even the tiniest bit, and he's not shy about making his feelings on the changes known - at least in writing. 

 Sara, your assistant-slash-boss reads the note over your shoulder and snorts, dancing away before you could swat at her. 

 "Just give that boy a trial run and get him the fuck over it, you'd be doing him a favor," she tells you, ducking before the plastic takeaway dessert fork you tossed at her would have hit her. "I'm not kidding, babe," she tells you, popping up again like a demented prairie dog, and you would roll your eyes at her except she's looking uncharacteristically serious. "Does he not understand the concept of cheat day? It's not called cheat coffeeshop."

 And you roll your eyes at her after all, even though she's not wrong, exactly. But you can't bring yourself to complain about how often Miro swings by, whether it's with Tyler or Jamie or the rest of the Finnish mafia. Sometimes he swings by alone, too, and you secretly like those days best, because he usually spends those visita hovering around the counter or in the kitchen or in your office with you - eating slowly, almost delicately at his pastries, and pushing your hands away whenever you or Sara try to steal a taste of whatever he seems to be enjoying so much. 

 He visits way more than anyone else on the team, even Tyler, and Ty visits often enough that your coffeeshop's kinda known for him. Your coffeeshop - his - Sara's, whatever you want to call it. The coffeeshop started out as Sara's, a modest and kinda rundown little place until you and Tyler had decided to sweep in.

 The thing is, you're known in your family as being a little flighty - a reputation you can't even make any arguments against while still being honest and fair. And you like to think you're almost always honest and fair. But there's just so much of the world to experience, and so little time to experience it all in - it drives you crazy, sometimes, all the things you're not doing, and your family understands that. 

 Even supports you in that, maybe a little more than they should. But hey, Ty could definitely afford it. 

 When you announced to your family that you're dropping out of pre-med and going to baking and pastry arts school, your mom had protested for about a week until Tyler had called about this - Sara's coffeeshop, a little rundown but it's been around for about as long as time, a local no-frills favourite in downtown Dallas and if you wanted to go to school you can damn well make sure you like what would be waiting for you when you get out of it first. 

 He bought out a fifty percent share of the coffeeshop, and let you know that it's a loan - a gift only if you follow through with it. He let Sara know she's in charge of the business as a whole, while you're in charge of the kitchens - more specifically, the pastries and whatever hot menu items you decide to add on. 

 Before you and Mr. Moneybags had joined the staff, the coffeeshop had been seriously no-frills - it sold coffee and cold sandwiches and that was about it. Some of the regular crowd had stayed around for your menu overhaul, but you'd brought in a younger crowd, too, students and hipsters and puckbunnies (though you've yet to call any of them that to their faces). 

 That was about two years ago, so you think you have a pretty good track record - two years of balancing school and working on your own recipes and prepping pastries to be sold and learning how to balance the business's books, because you'd learned that that's something you need to get used to (inventories, dealing with receipts and regular payments to suppliers and so on) and if you try to add business classes on top of everything else you might die. 

 (So much for wanting to try and do everything all at once.)

 Two years of working at the coffeeshop, at building it from the near-ground (sorry, Sara) up has matured you - at least, that's what you tell Tyler right before you slam back two shots of vodka, one coming neatly after the other, waiting for the burn to die down before you punch an arm victoriously into the air. 

 "You could pretend that was your first drink," Jamie says to you from where he's leaning against the counter - even with you perched on top of it, ankles crossed as neatly as anyone could possibly want, you don't have to look down much to look him in the eye. His eyes are crinkled with amusement, his voice low and easy, and you lean down to press a kiss against his forehead - beaming at the perfect imprint your red lipstick leaves behind. 

 "Why start my first night as a twenty-one year old with a lie?" you ask him, grinning wide, and he's laughing up at you one moment and pushed away the next, Tyler's beaming face replacing his as he lifts you off the counter and sets you on the ground. The crowd cheers at that, for some reason, the party a mix of your bakery school friends and some loyal customers and some of Tyler's teammates, and you let big brother lead you to the cake you'd baked yourself. 

 No one else would know exactly what you'd want, you'd said, and Miro had shot back a quietly sassy. "that's because no one else would think to put that much rum in a cake," which. 

 Point to Miro. 

 But you can see Miro's face across the cake, smiling at you in the candlelight after the lights are switched off and everyone is gathered around to sing you happy birthday, and if he's willing to die by alcohol poisoning by birthday cake then that's alright by you, too. 

 "Make a wish," Sara shouts, sounding like she doesn't need the cake's help, and after catching Tyler's gaze you close your eyes - so no one knows that you'd wish for exactly this - before leaning down to blow out the candles.

 Two hours later, you're perched on the counter again, legs swinging idly as you watch Roope dance on one of the nearby tables. You're wondering, in a purely academic kind of way, how many gyrations it'll take before the table comes crashing down - it's a lucky thing you and Tyler had renovated the coffeeshop and swapped out all of the furniture, or that would definitely have happened the moment he'd climbed on. 

 And then you'd be short one extremely important scientific study. 

 You're distracted from your research by Miro coming in close - too close, standing between your legs, his waist is slim, you realise, when you realise you can comfortably sit with it between your knees. The knowledge makes you warm all over and you want to say that you don't know why, except you do. 

 "Water?" he asks, as though you're not clearly thirsty for something else, and you're blinking at him to confirm you'd heard right. You get a little sidetracked by his grin, but then you follow his nod down to the glass in his hand, taking another moment before you accept it. 

 And sip, closing your eyes again because you can feel his gaze on you, feel the warmth of his hands on your thighs, just above your knees but under the hem of your dress. You don't put the glass down until you've drank about half of it, and when you do, it's to rest both your wrists on his shoulders, like a parody of a slow dance. 

 Or like you're putting the two of you in some private circle, away from the noise of the crowd. His eyes are gorgeous from this close - and he's flushed, but they're too clear, watching you with something between wariness and want. 

 "You're sober," you say, and the word comes out like an accusation, and Miro blushes even harder - before his eyes narrow at you. "I'm twenty, I don't really drink when I’m here - you're not?" he asks, and in the same heartbeat his hands are off you, resting on either side of your legs on the counter instead. 

 He looks genuinely concerned, it's adorable, and you lace your hands together behind his neck before he could escape completely. "I'm not, like, wasted," you tell him, and when he looks unconvinced, you lean down to press your forehead against his - so at least you wouldn't have to see it. 

 "Promise I'm not, baby," you say, the endearment coming as easily to you as it always has, and you wonder if his shoulders always tense when you say it. His hands move, slow and uncertain, to rest around your waist, and you smile a little. "I'm just a little tipsy, a lot happy. Did you see Roope dancing on the table?"

 "Yeah, that's why I brought you the water. Didn't want you getting any ideas," he says, and you laugh a little.  

 "I'm not going to ask why you're worried about me," you tell him, pulling back to look him in the eye again, and he's not looking uncomfortable now - just a little curious, just a lot fond. 

 "You think you know why?" he asks, and he's tilting his face up just right - you have your hands holding his face steady for you in the next heartbeat, you're pressing your lips to his like you'd been wanting to for months now, you feel him kissing you back, then deepening the kiss, confident and needy and sure - 

 and then he's gone. 

 And this time Tyler's not even to blame - you look around a little dazed, wondering if he'd spotted the two of you and came over, pushing Miro aside like he'd done to Jamie, wondering if you're more drunk thank you thought. 

 "Finish the water, Y/N," Miro says, because Miro had decided to pull away all by himself, and he's looking at you with - you don't even know. "I'll get you another glass, and then I should probably go. Happy birthday again, thanks for the - birthday kiss." 

 And then he really is gone, pushing his way through the crowd, and then you start wishing that you are drunk.

“Hmm. I’m really not sure! I’m leaning towards the textured blush paper with gold envelopes but I---I really don’t know.” The indecisive bride-to-be ran her hands over the paper options laid out before her on the large wooden table. She fixed her eyes on Kristen with a look that spoke volumes of just how overwhelmed she was. “What do you think?” She asked hesitantly. Kristen smiled warmly and set down her pen. “Personally, I really like the combination of the sage green envelope lined with gold and the blush pink paper for the card. It works all of your colours into it and I think it will look soft and elegant---but it’s really all up to you. Trust your taste!” The woman across from her lit up with excitement. “Oh my gosh! I love that idea SO MUCH! Yes. You know what? Let’s do that.” She said. “Ok, sage green, gold and pink it is! I’ll need a list of full names and addresses to do the hand lettering---as soon as you can get them to me.” Kristen said. “Of course! We just finalized the guestlist so I can have that to you by the end of the week.” She let out a sigh and visibly relaxed. “Thank you so much for everything Kristen. You’re a dream to work with!” 

Kristen smiled widely and gathered up the requested items and tucked them into a thin box. “That’s so kind. I’m happy to be a small part of your big day.” She said. “We just got in some really gorgeous planners if you need one to keep track of everything.” She said as she gestured to the display at the front of the shop. “Actually, I could use one---planning this wedding is a beast of a task. I’ve been sent on behalf of my employer---we’re looking for a supplier of fine paper goods for our boutique hotel.” “You’d be my first corporate client---I’ve never done wholesale before.” “We’ve heard good things about you---and we always deal locally when we can.” He said. “Well, shall we get started?” She asked. “Yes, please. Thank you for accommodating me, it’s most appreciated---and apologies for not setting up an advance appointment.” “There’s no need for apologies.” She said with a warm smile. “So you’re a new boutique hotel in town?” “We’ve been in Buffalo for a long time but the city has changed so much. We feel it’s the right time to reopen.” James said. “We do value discretion. The plans haven’t been announced yet.” He added pointedly. “Understood.” She said with a sly smile. “Your secret is safe with me.” They worked together to put together the initial order for the hotel. Planners, stationary, pens, pencils. Plain black leather bound notebooks. “Do you need the name of a printer to have the items branded with your logo? I have a great one I work with.” “No, thank you. We like to keep things very minimal. Exclusive.” He said. That struck Kristen as odd. What kind of hotel didn’t want or need branded stationary? It must be a very expensive hotel---but in Buffalo? How would that work out she wondered. They worked together efficiently to get everything sorted. James followed her to the register. “Do you accept coin or shall I pay by card?” “Coin?” She asked with a small polite laugh. James immediately brought out his black company card and left the gold coins in his pocket. “Card is fine.” She said as she rang up the order. “Here’s my business card. Please do call when everything arrives. It’s been a real pleasure, Kristen.” “Likewise. Thank you for coming in. I’ll be in touch when everything is ready.” She said, taking his very elegant business card from him. “Have a pleasant evening.” He said as he left the store. “You too.” She called out distractedly as she examined the exquisitely designed business card. The Continental. Buffalo, New York. It read in elegant gold script. She recognized the address. It was a beautiful old building downtown. It had been empty for decades and she always hoped it would be saved from the wrecking ball. “What what that guy’s deal?” Steph asked loudly, causing Kristen to jump. She looked out the door and then at Steph with a puzzled look on her face. “I honestly have no idea. He was kind of...odd. Wasn’t he?” Steph laughed. “He’s definitely not from here. I know that for sure. He seemed, British?” Kristen hummed in agreement.

John was at the kitchen island with the crossword and a cup of coffee, his pen in hand, brows furrowed, when she came in with the groceries. Kristen put the bags down in front of the fridge before she wrapped her arms around his waist and placed a kiss on his temple. “Crossword, huh?” She said as she peered over his shoulder. “Mmm.” “You know I have many comfortable chairs to sit on, right?” She said with a laugh. He turned to meet her eyes and smirked. “I like your kitchen. It’s comfortable. It’s better with you here, though.” Kristen’s face scrunched up as a blush crept across her cheeks. “You absolute sap.” She said as she swatted his shoulder playfully. He smiled and shrugged. “Oh---I read that there’s a meteor shower tonight. I was thinking we could drive out somewhere near my place and see what we can spot?” He said. She smiled and shook her head. 

It was one of those moments where what he had done for a living and who he really was stood in such contrast that she couldn’t help but laugh. “What?” He asked as he bumped his shoulder against hers. “You got a date idea from an actual newspaper. It's funny---and very sweet and sounds like fun.” She playfully pushed him off of her and crossed her arms. A small smirk on her lips. “Yeah, yeah I’m an old man.” He said with a laugh as Kristen turned and started putting the groceries away. “I’d help you but -- my aching bones and all.” He shot her a pointed look before he turned back to the crossword with a huge grin on his face. 

He lasted all of 30 seconds before he was at her side helping put things away. “How did your bridal consult go?” He asked, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her in against his chest. She felt herself relax, letting go of tension she didn’t even know she was carrying. “It went really well.” She said. “No bridezilla action? I don’t have to get involved?” He teased. “No, she was great actually---just the usual deer-in-the-headlights look that most people who plan their own wedding have.” He squeezed her a bit tighter in his arms and kissed her forehead. He thought about his own wedding. It seemed so long ago now but not nearly long enough to stop his heart from feeling that familiar tug of grief. The edges of it had dulled a bit---and even more since he’d finally been able to open up to Kristen about it. His very next thought was of her. What she’d look like walking towards him. Toward a life together. “John, you’re squishing me.” She said, snapping him out of his thoughts. He loosed his grip on her and ran his hands down her arms. Taking her hands in his. “I’m in love with you, Kristen.” He said quietly. Almost to himself. “I love you.” He said loudly, his eyes filled with warmth and hope as he gazed down at her, a smile playing on the edges of his lips. Her breath hitched in her throat. John watched her expression carefully. Taking in how her lips parted and her eyes went wide as she registered what he’d said. She squeezed his hands tightly. “I love you too. So much.” She looked radiant. Her smile crinkling the corners of her eyes softly. He leaned down and kissed her, one hand splayed on her lower back as he slid the other into her hair. He leaned back against the kitchen island and pulled her tighter against him. He hadn’t meant to blurt out his feelings for her like this---but it felt right. This moment. In her kitchen. She was his home---and maybe he could be hers.

They leaned back against the bumper of the car, watching the meteors track across the sky. Steam rose from their thermoses of hot chocolate, dissipating into the cold autumn night as Dog and Gremlin sat at their feet. They’d become fast friends---much to the relief and delight of John and Kristen. Dog never minded when Gremlin would lean on or even sleep on him. He’d give the occasional sigh of resignation and that would be it. “It’s beautiful out here. How’d you find this place?” She asked. John shifted and pulled her in closer to his side. “When I first moved here I was alone a lot. Restless. I think I took Dog to every park, every hiking trail all around the area.” He said. “Oh! That reminds me---there may be a new place we can explore together soon.” She said. “Where’s that?” He asked before taking a sip of his drink and staring up into the sky. “A new boutique hotel is opening up---or supposedly, reopening downtown. They came to my shop for a huge stationary supply order---but here’s the thing, the guy was really kind of weird. So...formal? I’m not sure how well it’s going to go over here.” “You said reopening?” John asked. Dread crystalizing in the pit of his stomach. “Steph thought it was weird too. I mean, he asked if he could pay by coin or card. What a dad joke.” She said. “What did you just say?” He asked. Kristen noticed that John’s whole demeanor had suddenly changed. “Coin or card.” She repeated. John pulled away from her. “It wasn’t a joke, Kristen.” John said harshly. “Why didn’t you tell me about this sooner. You have NO IDEA what you’ve gotten yourself into.” “John---I was about to tell you when I got home but then the conversation we were having seemed more important. Kristen, I love you.
