TOUR THOUGHTS
Saw the Les Miserables Tour at the Princess of Wales Theatre in Toronto on May 21 2024; here are my thoughts (Long read, sorry I have a lot of feelings)
Prologue/Look Down/Valjean's Soliloquy
We got like, holographic waves crashing and the men are rowing a boat LIKE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE it's awesome
Oh my god the pipes on the background actors were so good. THE SUN IS STRONG ITS HOT AS HEEELLL BELOW
I miss Javert's stupid guard hat. Was bareheaded as he gave Valjean his yellow ticket
PETIT GERVAIS?????????? Valjean steals a little boy's coin when he's roaming the countryside 😭
Randy Jeter as the Bishop blew me away. Not just his voice but his acting was FANTASTIC every single movement was like. I am an old bishop. This is how an old bishop moves. Idk idk it was really good
Nick Cartell did a great job w Valjean overall, but I totally loved him as pre-MsurM Valjean the most. He acts like a feral animal, grabbing the wine out of the nun's hands and the bread from the priest all hunched over and practically snarling - very very cool and awesome
At the End of the Day
Not a negative but when we went to At the End of the Day there was very minimal lighting and my first thought was Oh no the lighting broke hope they fix it and we don't have to have a brief intermission but then when they went 'At the end of the day there's another day dawning' the lights went up and I was like OHHHHHHHHHHHH so that's just me not understanding lighting direction
Foreman killed it, so did all of the factory workers I love all the interactions and ad-libbing in the background it makes me so happy to see
Every time I saw a tall graceful ensemble member I was like '"That's Kyle Adams" and 8/10 times I was right. Otherwise it was Daniel Gerard Bittner
I Dreamed A Dream
OKKKK VOCALS???? Haley Dortch has such a beautiful, clear, emotional sound and she left not a dry eye in the house. Literally the second intermission hit my parents and myself were like. Holy shit dude what about that Fantine
I got her autograph after the show and she was so so sweet 🥺 She accidentally messed up her signature and had to redo it and was apologising to me and I was like GIRL you brought the house down you could stab me right now and I'd be like 'Thanks have a good one'
Lovely Ladies / Fantine's Arrest
Bamatabois (David Andino) was a standout performance, really chewed the scenery and I adored every second he was on stage (Plus his costume was fantastic)
The other girls defending Fantine 🥺
I like that after the police show up and they basically arrest all of the ladies and pimps, regular well-off citizens come out to witness Valjean defending Fantine from Javert. Thought it was a nice touch
Fantine's Death
My first and only cry of the evening, Haley Dortch no one does it like you
The Confrontation
If you've heard me talk about the confrontation you'll know that I absolutely hate the new chain choreography, HOWEVER. I really really liked it this time. Preston in particular gave it a lot of physicality that I enjoyed
Nick Cartell is a little guy and I don't really believe that his Valjean managed to knock out Preston's Javert
For some reason the percussion was really loud and I could barely hear the vocals so I don't have many thoughts on them
Master of the House / Waltz of Treachery
MATT CROWLE YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS
Both Thenardiers were fantastic, not a crazy amount of ad-libbing but when they did they made it count ("BYE, BAGUETTE")
Madame in particular was hilarious
Master of the House is very busy in a good way, everywhere you look interesting things are happening. Another number where the ensemble shines and you can tell everyone is having a blast
The Bargain was funny as hell, Thenardier tells Cosette to die in his arms and she goes limp when he's saying she's 'often been ill'
Valjean gives Cosette Catherine!
Look Down / The Robbery
Gavroche was super charismatic and confident, really great child actor (Milo Maharlika)
Eponine tosses Marius' book across the stage and he goes "I like the way you always ... tease 😐" They're such cute friends together
After Enjolras and the boys are done their preaching Enjolras gets stopped by a policeman and is told off 😭
During the robbery Montparnasse keeps Marius away by brandishing his little knife at him which I thought was cute
Also! Montparnasse is the only member of Thenardier's gang to escape during the Robbery!!! Which is a nice Brick reference
After Thenardier's 'In the absense of a victim' spiel he does this exact pose
Tumblr media
Gavroche's little 'Clear the streets' 🫡moment is so cute
Stars
God I love Preston Truman Boyd
His Javert is so stalwart and reserved and dedicated, he's kind of robocop and it really really works, and you get to see just a smidge of vulnerability peek out in this song
ABC Cafe / Red and Black
I DON'T REMEMBER A LOT bare with me
Grantaire was absolutely the standout. Slapped Marius' butt with his coat. Stuck his wine bottle dick in Enjolras' face. Offered Combeferre a sip of his wine (who reluctantly accepted). Blew a kiss at Enjolras
Kyle Adams physicality is probably my favourite aspect of his Grantaire - he moves very assuredly, like a cat, in a way that is like okay he's drunk but he's so used to being drunk that his stumbling is more like dancing. I remember reading a fic that described Grantaire's movements in a similar way and I wonder if that was one of the fics Kyle took inspiration from?
OOH they did the wine bottle keep-away thing with Grantaire and Marius which I didn't know they still did so that was exciting
J.T Wood is such a cute Joly I love his voice
In Do You Hear the People Sing Grantaire grabs a gun and holds it at arms-length like it has cooties before handing it off to another student
Combeferre waves the flag both times (Here and in One Day More) and I'm not sure if it's always Combeferre who does that or if it's because Andrew Marks Maughan is clearly the most physically strong of the Barricade Boys
In My Life / A Heart Full of Love
Delaney Guyer is a really good Cosette in that she has a gorgeous voice and also has a lot of personality and actually reacts to things going on around her
Marius (who was played by Christopher James Tamayo for this performance) is such a cute little nerd. You can see him try to figure out what he's going to do, then he throws a rock at Cosette's window and kind of cringes at the noise - he's so unsure of himself and awkward
Cosette is very excited that he's here and closes the window right away, which prompts Marius' 'I'm doing everything all wrong!' until she reappears downstairs and they get to be cute dorks in love
Attack on Rue Plumet
I don't remember a lot but I DO remember that Eponine was really good here
When Valjean is like 'Tomorrow we'll away' Cosette goes 'WHAT? NO!'
David Andino is so good as Babet he is a chronic scene stealer at this point
One Day More
If you know Another thing about me you know I hate the One Day More box-step but it actually did not bug me this time. They put Grantaire next to Enjolras for the marching portion which is cute
On My Own
Holy shit Mya Rena Hunter delivered the most heartbreaking and powerful rendition of this I've ever heard
The Barricade
Loved Feuilly in his little part
Javert is a good spy. If I didn't know the plot of Les Mis I would've been like Holy shit that's Javert? Crazy. I love him drawing the 'plans' he'd overheard into the ground with a stick
Gavroche flipping Javert off >>>>>
Buff Combeferre is one of the two to drag Javert away to be tied up lol
A Little Fall of Rain
The only version of ALFoR that actually made me feel something
Marius and Eponine get a lot of time to be cute together before the barricade actually notices that she's dying - and Gavroche is the first to notice and gets a front row seat to her death which is heartbreaking
The First Attack
Grantaire's "AND SO THE WAR WAS WON!" was sooo scathingly sarcastic
Javert waited, like, 30 seconds to leave after Valjean freed him, with his back almost against the barrel of Valjean's gun as if he were hoping to be shot
When the gun went off the entire barricade abruptly snapped their heads to look at Valjean and the audience laughed 😭
Telling Valjean 'Well done' for shooting a tied up hostage is a strange choice
Drink With Me
I still hate 'For certain as the eagle flies' I think it's the dumbest line in the entire musical
Grantaire's part was very grand - His voice has like noticeably changed at this point in the musical to give it a sort of hoarse hopeless quality to it which absolutely hits you in the feels
Enjolras comforted him and I swear Grantaire let his hand linger on his cheek for a few seconds longer than normal before pushing him away
Gavroche hugged Grantaire from behind and Grantaire couldn't even turn around at first because he was so distraught and kind of blindly reached for him 😭
Chris Tamayo's Marius is such a poor little meow meow
Bring Him Home
Absolutely jaw-dropping performance from Nick Cartell
He sings Bring Him Home like it's a lullaby - which it's supposed to be
I don't exaggerate when I say that the applause went on for about a minute straight, and was the loudest of the night by far
Death of Gavroche / The Final Battle
Oh poor thang
Grantaire near the end of Gavroche's singing was turned away facing the audience like he knew Gav was going to die and couldn't bear to watch 🥺
Later on in the final battle Grantaire spends most of the time next to Gavroche's body in like a catatonic state
The SPOTLIGHTS representing BULLETS as Les Amis died almost made me lose it
Grantaire dies last, I'm sure he said something before he started climbing the barricade but I couldn't hear it 😭He and Enjolras still have their moment over Marius' body
The Sewer
Javert comes across Enjolras' cart-carried body (Still hate the cart but I can learn to appreciate it) and looks a bit uncomfortable
Then he stumbles upon Gavroche's corpse, kneels, and does the sign of the cross over him
Almost made me cry ngl
DOG EATS DOG WAS SO GOOD I LOVED IT
Javert looked like he wanted to shoot Valjean as he walked away with Marius
Javert's Suicide
HOOOOOOLYYYY SHIIIIITTTTT
It was so good
Preston Truman Boyd you will always be famous I fully believe that Javert had completely lost his mind at this point in the play
I don't have many thoughts on the rest but I loved Marius and Cosette reading Valjean's confession as he walked away with Fantine - and the Bishop hugging him as he arrives in heaven
Also Kyle Adams as Major Domo mincing about the stage in The Wedding was an absolute delight
Am very sleepy now but overall 10/10 I love this cast so much

it’s time for some yuguyao/the longest promise clowning… i feel like we will get a couple from this timeframe so i wanna be able to archive as much as i can. 🦢
Tumblr media
consider this post as part 3. one & two linked.
• something from lrlg ( please come back to us soon ) and thought to be connected to how shiying reminds xz of lan wangji too. yibo was again speaking to someone so it may seem as random convo that time.
you are like a fairy
what do you mean acting in my true colors? ***
neither you nor him ( laughing )
well send it to me
Tumblr media
it possibly points to xz telling wyb that he is acting in his ( wyb ) colors, white as in gusu lan. i’m just so fond of the speculation that zz sees wyb’s color as white. even removing the whole lwj connection — him seeing wyb as the color white, something so clean and innocent just gets me. most of us associate him with green, and rightfully so because that’s what wyb prefers. however it’s so gg to tie wyb with a color that represents purity, and i guess that’s how he sees wyb. a really good boy who’s clean and honest like the color white. 🥹🥹🥹
• another example of them not scheduling things at the same time. I don’t know how long this will hold out but so far they are doing it so well. Yuguyao aired 7.2 and for VIPs, it will end on 7.20. Then on 7.22 there will be a YH concert in Macau and on 7.28 premiere of One & Only. a jampacked July for sure but it’s so good how they don’t overlap!
• i don’t really wanna go into detail anymore about the echoes of CQL that we see in YGY. most likely because this was filmed in Hengdian as well. and Shiying really looks like he will fit right in to Gusu Lan. There are already 2 hot search tags for that comparison/parallel ( 7/3/2023 )
Tumblr media
While I can’t fault people for noticing and i agree that it sets the scene for interesting edits in the future, I feel that this kind of topic is prone to being misunderstood and may be used by Antis. These are two different stories. Shiying is not WWX. The way GG acts as Shiying is different from WWX. I would hate for passerby to have the impression that GG can only act a certain way in costume dramas.
but shiying and lwj as friends is my headcanon now. no one can stop me.
• going by the shiying x lwj parallel, here they are in a 2019 interview where wyb says he hopes that ZZ will play a role that is contrasting to WWX. and well it came true, it’s Shiying.
Tumblr media
( no but this is so funny, he was once wwx who was silenced. and now he plays a role that can use a silencing spell 😂😂😂 )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• not really a cpn but a fact. i always say this — they have the same values and that’s why they get a long. they also take their careers as actors seriously. they are not idols who decided it’s cool to be an actor and just go along with their traffic. nope. they wanna deliver the best. the parallel between btf and ygy scene wherein the bts scenes emphasized an incident where they both were asking to do one more take. they want to have the perfect shot and it doesn’t matter how tiring it is.
Tumblr media
• and my fave, interpreting old candies in a new way. this post from way back of an umbrella have always been linked by the fandom to shiying ☂️
The use of 23 ( Ai Zhan ) the 3 “Go” and emoticons are also 3 ( Zhan Zhan ). The shooting time of YGY started from 20210329 so this day fits the timeline.
Tumblr media
What’s more interesting is that the umbrella is in the bucket with water. Is it implying the bathing scene of Shiying? And it happened that WYB allegedly went to visit the set again at that time, because in the fake material room on 6.27, LRLG said very clearly, "Go back to Mr. Wang to pack things" and the conversation between the two also said "I'll be with you when it rains" Have a meal"! And "God also wants to eat" isn't it a clear reference to our great priest shi ying?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sources: one / two / three / four

'...This weekend a good friend invited me to a filmed play of what was billed as a radical new version of Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya.
And playing ALL EIGHT PARTS in this retelling of a 125-plus-year-old Chekhov story was none other than the actor Andrew Scott.
Netflix’s Ripley.
The tortured gay heartthrob from last year’s All Of Us Strangers.
The hot priest from Fleabag.
Moriarity from the long-running BBC series Sherlock.
Among others.
You watch this guy nimbly jumping back and forth from one character to another, sometimes in mere seconds and other times in minutes, or monologues, as he quips, cajoles, argues, eats and occasionally even, with the use of his hands, shoulder, neck and breath, simultaneously portray two different male and female characters making love to each other, and all you can think about initially is….
How?????
How is this possible? How is he able to do this?
And then… who imagined it?
Well, it was adapted last year by the playwright Simon Stephens, who a decade ago theatrically shed light on and likely helped change the way we thought about autism in the groundbreaking play The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Night-Time (Note: Adapted from the novel by Mark Haddon, it’s won most major playwriting awards).
And he is billed as co-creating it with both Scott and Sam Yates, a 40ish British stage and sometimes television and film director known for his unusual approach to both new and classical material.
Okay.
But then you ask yourself…
Why????? Why do this?
Why do we need this? Why do it at all?
Well, because someone, or a handful of ones, thought of it and needed to think of it. Something about the world they lived in, or events they were personally experiencing, prompted them to think of it. And then move forward with recreating something (and a bunch of fictional someones) from the past that would allow them to understand their present in a different way.
It’s not as if before seeing this filmed version of a play done last year at the National Theatre I was excited about seeing Uncle Vanya done as a one-man show.
Or frankly, any production of Uncle Vanya at all. Nor, I venture to say, is the average person.
But watching Mr. Scott (Note: I so want to call him Andrew, or even Andy)… okay Andrew… throw himself so fully into instantly becoming so many people – with no wigs, no costumes, only a trajectory of mangled feelings, conflicts and eventually emotional outcomes, denials and realizations – well, it was about as contemporary as it gets for me.
It seemed that this film, of this play, had nothing at all to do with Uncle Vanya, or even the playwright himself.
What it addressed were the myriad of emotions, sometimes life and death ones, we are ALL trying to manage as best we can these days. Only to be shown there is no managing.
There is only being truthful about how and what we feel, taking the actions we believe fitting and holding out some hope for a better future when they don’t work out.
And, well, to keep trying.
It might sound a bit trite, but that’s what this new version of Vanya, the one I didn’t think I needed but some other people imagined I might need, did for me.
It made me realize once again that navigating what we call the politics of today is not much different for our generation than it ever was.
And that, lucky for us, back then Chekhov was quite an imaginative fellow himself.'

Top 10 Hammy 80's movie villains ranked by hammyness
Evil is over the top ,at least in film .So I wanted to do a list of my 10 favorite scene chewing villains but as I was thinking about and looking at the great scene chewers of cinema I noticed something ,the most insane over the top baddies tend to be from the 80's ,so doing my top 10 Hammy 80's villains ranked by hammyness ,so this isnt necesarily ranked by favorites ,just the most gloriously over the
10.Raven Shaddock from Streets of Fire-
I love this guy,This guy is bonkers.Played by a young Willem Dafoe ,this guy just does whatever he wants like rush on stage with his biker gang to kidnap a singer,Ellen Aim cause he thinks she is hot and challanges the main character Tom Cody to a SLEDGE HAMMER DUEL .So why isnt he higher? Well the ove the topness cause more from the script then performance and this is already a very over the top movie .I'm not saying Dafoe isnt hamming it up,It is Willem Dafoe after all ,ya got odd faces and he is doing this sort of southernish accent ,but I would say he is kind of channeling the classic black hat villains youd see in old westerns and I have also seen Dafoe go bigger .The fact this guy is only 10 shows you how over the top the other villains are
Tumblr media
9.Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors
This thing is a sassy voracious manipulative man eating singing plant...You dont expect it to be subtle .I debated whether to include vocal performances ,but...HOT DAMN ,Levi Stubbs brings it .See Levi Stubbs was not an actor nor did he have asperations to be one ,he was a singer ,and yet he brings such a energy to this role ,being both flamboyant but also powerful . Levis voice has a seductive yet dominant quality ,and props to the team of puppeteers ,making a villain that not only chews on the scenery but on its costars
Tumblr media
8.The Kurgen from Highlander
An immortal warrior who seeks to slay other immortals to achieve a great prize ,on paper this guy is so flat ,just an elementally evil dude .....Thank GOD for Clancy Brown .I mean Brown is a very intimidating guy ,very tall with a deep voice that Brown adds a rasp to ,but Brown plays the role like a guy whio just loves fuckin with people ,like its not enough he kills people but he loves messing with them too .He drives insanely while mocking the love interest, barks at an old lady, licks a priest, etc.Like anything to get a reaction .Combined with his costuming ,and very bad hairstyle choices(YEs I am including when he shaves his head ) ,this is a villain with punk rock energy
Tumblr media
7.The Joker in Batman
Hey what do you get when you take an already kind of out there actor, give him a perminate smile ,cove him in white makeup and just let him loose?Ya get Jack Nicholsons Joker. Now Joker is an over the top character,a grinning laughing madman whose sense of humor is murder and Nicholson was a perfect choice to play a demented gangster with a twisted sense of humor .Also of the live action Jokers ,he is the funniest
Tumblr media
6.Skeletor from Masters of the Universe
So the hammyness of Frank Langella is diffrent then the others on this list .....Cause his over the topness is really a reflection of how seriously he is taking it ,as he is playing the role of this skullfaced overlord as if he was Macbeth or Richard III.Its a really good performance ,wreally hitnting that Skeletor feels trapped by his own villainy....What makes it hammy ,is just the contrast with everything around him,a shakesperian villain giving grand speaches while he fights a nearly naked muscled man ,and Billy Barty is running around, and there is a lizard creature and a beast man and a tough talkin cop and Courtney Cox is there-Just what is this movie?I'll tell ya:Its fun
Tumblr media
5.Professor Ratigan from the Great Mouse Detective
Disney Villain played by Vincent Price ....Nah I dont need to explain this one
Tumblr media
4.Baron Vladimir Harkonen from Dune
This....Is one of my favorite villains to qoute .A very vile man who seeks to take over Arakis and kill Duke Leto and his family , while flying around doing nasty things ,he is so grotesque it becomes funny .Hats off to Kenneth McMillian who COMMITS ,shouting, laughing ,and overall he just looks like he is having a BALL .He is such a weird creepy horrible man,he is kind of the reason I love the movie next to Patrick Stewart running into battle with a pug in his arms
Tumblr media
3.Lord John Whorfin from the Adventures of Bukaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension
So Buckaroo Banzai is already a bonkers movie.,,,I swear,Jon Lithgow looked at the script and said"....I'll make it weirder "Playing a scientist posessed by an alien lizard from the 8th dimension ,in a sea of rather deadpan performances ,Lithgow stands out with his insane mannerisms and very goofy Italian accent
Tumblr media
2.Stubbs from Enemy Mine
So Stubbs ,a cruel scavenger and slaver who kidnaps the adopted alien kid of the main character is only in the third act of the movie. Now if you havent seen the movie you might be asking ,"Emprex ,if he isnt in the movie a lot why is he so high"...Thats because he makes his minimal screen time count . A lot of it comes down to Brion James who just DEVOURS the scenery, shouting almost every line .I dunno ever since I saw this movie ,this asshole has really stuck with me
Tumblr media
1.Frank Booth from Blue Velvet
A character so hammy he is kind of terrifying .In the world of the film everyone is wrather subdued.....Then Frank enters the film, screaming, rambling, raving and cursing and he is so unhinged it is truly frightening .DEniss Hopper is honestly perfect as this man who is a basically a raging id ,hes one of my favorite villains in film and by far one of the best scene chewers
Tumblr media
So what do ya think?Agree?Disagree? Share your thoughts! Who is your favorite hammmy 80's movie villain?Who did I miss
@ariel-seagull-wings @filmcityworld1 @the-blue-fairie @princesssarisa @angelixgutz @amalthea9 @themousefromfantasyland @goodanswerfoxmonster @theancientvaleofsoulmaking

He’s lounging on a couch in a small, windowless room in a Manhattan studio, where he’s been dutifully shooting promotional material for Birdy all day. But he seems bright and alive, his broken foot long since patched up. In a way, the injury may have helped him tap into the psyche of his character, an increasingly broke medieval lord whose sartorial and aesthetic tastes set him apart from the “draconian, macho atmosphere” of his realm, Scott says. There’s a sense of vulnerability alongside complex masculinity at work in this decidedly feminist film, aided by Scott’s tender rendering of Lord Rollo.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Scott chats candidly about tackling the role, what it was like working with Dunham, and how playing the instantly iconic Hot Priest in Fleabag has left an eternal stamp on his career.
Vanity Fair: What was the first thing that made you say yes to this project?
Andrew Scott: It was definitely Lena. I think Girls is extraordinary. I remember seeing it and thinking, Wow. Such a singular voice. That’s the stuff that you look for. A writer that’s not scared to put their autograph on something. Whatever she puts her mind to, she’s going to have a vision and she’s going to deliver a message.
Did you have a favorite Girls character?
It was more the spirit of it. I remember that extraordinary scene where they break up—Lena’s character and Adam Driver’s character. It was such a sad, brilliant scene. And the fact that she did it at that age [is impressive].
Your character gets a memorable introduction from Birdy. She writes: “He’s often vain, usually drunk, and always greedy.” It’s her perspective, but there are those elements to him, which you tackle in a fun way. How did you approach a character who is so louche?
Oh, with absolute abandon. [Laughs] We talked about costumes that he should be wearing. It was incredible working with [costume designer] Julian Day. Lord Rollo would be wearing Gucci now if he could. He likes to spend money, he’s interested in art. He’s just one of those straight men.
Going back to the costumes, I was watching this thinking you must be so comfortable. You’re wearing robes on top of robes. Was this the most comfortable movie you’ve ever done?
It would’ve been, but, unfortunately, during the movie I fell down stairs and I broke my foot.
Oh god! I’m so sorry.
Yeah. I think that’s an exclusive. [Laughs] There were these very slippery mahogany stairs and I just fell and smashed my foot. So for a lot of the movie, I’m walking around with a big boot. I was very grateful for [the costumes] and that I wasn’t putting on a pair of skinny jeans or something.
Have you ever worked on a film where you had that kind of injury before? Or was this a first?
No, it was my first time that’s ever happened. It’s amazing how much it fucks things up.
Did you learn anything about yourself as an actor through working through that kind of challenge?
A little, I think. When you’re in pain, you feel so weirdly vulnerable. I had to take [the cast] off at times. You’re in crowds saying, “Please don’t stand on my foot, please, please, please.”
The first AD is like “Be careful around Andrew!”
Yeah. But we did okay. We managed it!
I’m curious what Lena is like on set. How does she give a note?
We did a lot of improvisation. She’ll come back and say, “I love that line!” Like all the best directors, you reward the good and you ignore the bad. [Laughs] She’s incredibly effusive and fun. She understands performing as well. You’re not required to do 75 takes of something with diminishing returns. You feel confident because she feels confident.
I noticed at TIFF that she said she turned you from “Hot Priest” to “Hot Medieval Dad.” I wanted to ask about the phenomenon of getting “hot” prefixed to your characters after playing Hot Priest on Fleabag. I imagine it’s flattering, but also strange. Does it happen a lot?
It only happens when you are talking about things [at festivals], or doing press. There are worse things to be called, I suppose.
Right, it makes sense that it happens with press. It’s not happening in your day-to-day life, where your friends are like, “This is my friend.”
“This is my hot Irish friend.” [Laughs]
If they were true friends, maybe they would do that.
If they were true friends, exactly!
People loved Fleabag Season 2 so much. Hot Priest left such an indelible mark. It made me wonder how present the legacy of that show is in your day-to-day life.
It’s definitely a piece of work that people just love. They love it. It’s a symbol, a little bit like this movie, of the people that create it, and that’s why it’s joyful. I feel very proud of it. Fleabag is so generous and wonderful and adds to the feeling of compassion in the world, but it’s done through the prism of comedy. It influences people with a sleight of hand that takes such skill.
I did a rewatch recently and it’s just so good.
It’s a gorgeous thing. And men respond to it as well. Men really love it because it’s inclusive. It’s really inclusive.
That’s another thing to say about Lena as a director—the set was incredibly inclusive. Movie sets can be macho places, so to have people in key positions, it changes the atmosphere.
How does it change it for you?
It’s just novel. The thing I love about working in movies, or just working as an actor, is that it doesn’t require a certain class of person, or certain sex, or gender, or race. You can be working with lots of people. I love the idea that if you’re in a play about grandparents and 16-year-olds, then the people that you have to surround yourself with for a two-month run on the West End are 80-year-olds and 16-year-olds. That’s where our empathic instincts can grow. When you’re on a set where everybody is very different, but you all feel the same joy through work, you all run away to the circus together. Lena has insisted on certain jobs being fulfilled by different types of people and it makes a difference.
Have you had the experience of being on a super macho set? How did that impact you?
It’s not particularly that it was ever awful, but I do think I’ve come to question [it.] You go, Oh, this job doesn’t just belong to this type of person. You can have a female DP. Why not? What, they’re not interested in cameras? It’s just not true. The only thing that matters is that you’re able to do your job. As long as we don’t confuse that with tokenism. As a gay person, I never want to get a job because they think, Oh, we’ve got to tick a box here. I want it because I’m good at my job.
I just worked with Andrew Haigh on a film and it was wonderful. I haven’t worked with a lot of gay directors and it’s nice. That’s not to say one is better than the other. It isn’t a sin to be a straight white male. There are many talented people who deserve a place at the table. It’s just that other people should be included as well. And also, we’re allowed to make mistakes. I think we live in a culture where mistakes aren’t allowed to be made. I really do believe the idea of being able to say, “I don’t know” is the basis of every artistic or scientific breakthrough there’s ever been. All the really brilliant artists that I feel I’ve been lucky enough to work with are comfortable saying, “I don’t know. What do you think?” The culture of “Never make a mistake and if you do make a mistake, you’re gone” is dangerous.
It closes off art. But to that point, I feel some people make those mistakes by being hyper-visible and being on social media and saying things they don’t need to say. I feel you’ve taken yourself out of that equation by not being on social media.
I refute the idea that you have to be on social media. Don’t tell me what I have to be on. If that’s a basis upon which I’m going to be employed, then I’ll look at something else to do. [Laughs] You’ve got to not be bullied.
There’s so many more questions I could ask about that. But I did want to ask about Ripley coming up. Can you say anything about your interpretation of the character?
It was a very tough thing to do, and it was an enormous undertaking. I haven’t seen it yet. I feel like it could be really extraordinary. It’s certainly beautifully written and we shot in some absolutely extraordinary places; Italy and here in New York. I hope I haven’t fucked it up.
For a lot of people, the frame of reference is the movie adaptation, but I imagine this is quite different.
This definitely takes its source material from the Patricia Highsmith novel. The movie, which is extraordinary, changed some things from the novel that we’ve reinstated. It’s got a very singular atmosphere. I remember when we did Hamlet, we would go, Are we just doing this scene like this because 15 other productions have done this? My job was to go, Okay, throw all the famousness of it away. How would you play this if you weren’t afraid? Or if you weren’t weighed down with people’s expectations of what you should do? That’s the challenge of it. I’ve done a lot of literary adaptations and I actually very rarely go to the original source material. The writer does so much for you. Their job is to get the book and interpret it into the script, and my job is to interpret the script. It’s just a cleaner way of working for me. I don’t want people to think I can’t be bothered reading the book, but I never wanted to veer too far from playing as a child. When you’re a kid, you’re so encouraged to play. You go, “You’ll be this and I’ll be this,” and you begin to play. I suppose I don’t want to academify, to make up a word, acting too much. [Laughs]
I’m sure there are plenty of people who would like to hear you academify acting.
You can only do what feels right for you. I know a lot of incredible actors who like to journal and do the research. That’s a really important part of it. I totally get that. [But] what works for me? What gives me access? Sometimes, it’s just being able to jump in without a parachute so that you can be alive and free.
In Catherine Called Birdy, Andrew Scott plays Lord Rollo, a man of supreme leisure who dresses like the founding father of medieval comfort. He swans around in silky robes over silkier caftans, lounging his days away on soft, fluffy poufs as he plots ways to marry off his teenage daughter (the titular Birdy, played by Bella Ramsey) to a wealthy suitor. The film, written and directed by Lena Dunham and based on the novel by Karen Cushman, was almost the most comfortable shoot of Scott’s life. But then, early on in the production, the actor fell down a flight of stairs and broke his foot.

RICKY CLICKED HIS HEELS
Ricky + Mischa high-fived and it hurt Mischa's hand
Jane is taller than like everyone she's so stiff /pod
Noel backed up and walked to the other side of the stage when Jane walked up to him
When Karnak said "no tradesies" Noel smiled
NOEL TOOK A BITE OF THE BREAST MILK SANDWICH AND DANCED WITH IT THEN WIPED HIS MOUTH OFF AFTER OCEANS INTRO
Jane is so obsessed with Constance <3 she's just staring at her while Ocean's doing her whole monologue

Everyone is doing their own dances in the first verse of TSIA
MISCHA SMACKED NOEL'S ASS?????
Jane is Talia
Mischa's nails are black!
Noel has a violin during Talia, Ocean + Constance have tambourines, and Ricky has a drum
This rendition of Talia is gorgeous omg
Mischa walks across the stage in search of Talia :-(
The end bit of Talia was so awkward
The Nischa hug was so good :-( you can hear Mischa crying + even after they pulled away Noel was rubbing his shoulder (also it looked like Mischa kissed Noel's neck when he went in for that hug)
Ricky's actor really messed up a few lines of the pre SABM monologue
Jane + Mischa are Ricky's parents
Noel had cat plushies!
Noel's actor is great at accents

Best dramas I’ve watched in 2020 so far (and some not so good ones) Part II
part 1 here
Once Upon a Time in Lingjian Mountain - based on Once Upon A Time, There Was A Spirit Sword Mountain by 国王陛下 (translation dropped at chapter 50 out of 884 back in 2017). A combination of satire/comedy with complex themes. The emotional investment sneaks up on you out of nowhere and hits you like a sack of bricks. An interesting twist on the master/disciple relationship. Meh on the special effects. Excellent female characters. Solid plot, endless fanfic potential, all the found family your heart desires. Much more gay than you’d think. Needs Season 2, but Season 1 can be watched over and over again. 9/10
Handsome Siblings - based on Twin Heroes by Gu Long. Feel good ending. A decent amount of angst. The most heartwarming drama I’ve watched all year. Funny and insightful and a joy to experience. Meh on the special effects. They don’t know they’re brothers. Plot drags only in a few places, and not for very long. A variety of female characters, but mediocre on their portrayals. A sect comprised of only female disciples - I would like to see it. Contains one of the three het couples whose happiness mattered to me in the entirety of 2020. An endless well of hilarity and angst. Can be watched over and over again. 8/10
Love and Redemption - based on The Glass Maiden by Shi Si Lang (translation ongoing). A wild ride from beginning to end. Intentionally and unintentionally funny. Gay subtext. Contains one of the three het couples whose happiness mattered to me in the entirety of 2020. A plethora of excellent and complex side characters. A feral bottom snake god. A merman who gets kidnapped once a week. Buckets of angst and frustration and misunderstandings. Gorgeous aesthetics. The male lead is tortured more often than all the other characters combined, but he looks hot while going through it. A+ for the sheer wildness of the plot, C- for all the misunderstandings; there has to be a limit somewhere. 7.5/10
The Rise of Phoenixes - based on The Rise of Phoenixes by 天下归元 (translation ongoing). Contains one of the three het couples whose happiness mattered to me in the entirety of 2020. If you judge the seriousness of the drama by the relative hotness of the Emperor, casting Ni DaHong should tell you everything you need to know. An abundance of court intrigue, suspense, and humor. Complex themes, steady plot progression, no scene time wasted. Costumes and set design out of this world. Smart and witty. The most thought provoking drama I’ve watched all year. Ni Ni is a goddamn goddess and should be worshipped daily. 10/10
Legend of Two Sisters In the Chaos - based on a novel I can’t seem to track down anywhere. Meng ZiYi must have some serious back pain from carrying all forty episodes on her shoulders. Interesting premise, shaky execution at best. Main het relationship did not excite, nor were the acting skills comparable; Meng ZiYi deserved better. Wang ZhuoCheng gives a decent performance. The drama does pack an emotional punch if you stick around long enough to get invested. Forty episodes long, but sometimes seemed twice that. Definitely entertaining, but not engaging. 6/10
The Wolf - also based on a novel I can’t track down. Too much romance, then angst, then romance. The dreaded love triangle. Dropped the drama three times, then went back because Xiao Zhan. Darren Wang gives decent performance, but does not have much to work with. Li Qin’s skills utterly wasted on this role. If you’re not invested in the love story, you’ll get bored. If you’re invested, you’ll be emotionally numb half-way through. Good fight scenes. Not so good special effects. 5/10 for the actors doing their best with what they had.
Dance of the Phoenix - based on Dragons Flies Phoenix Dances by 明月听风 (translation dropped at chapter 27 out fo 85 in May of 2020). Yu Mingye deserved better. Female main character + mostly female side characters. Excellent + complex villains, also female. Judging by the costumes + special effects, not much of a budget to work with. Cop-out in the last few episodes to neatly tie up the plot that was... not very intricate to begin with. Vastly entertaining but not that deep. Buckets of angst, but plenty of humor to ease the pain. Lan JingYi fights with a fan. Good fanfic potential. Godawful ending. 7/10 for the best villain I’ve encountered all year.
Legend of Fei - based on Bandits by Priest (translation ongoing). Zhao Liying slays. A variety of compelling female characters. Excellent fight choreography. Interesting premise, steadily progressing plot. Potential for many disaster bisexuals. May contain the fourth het romance I’m invested in this year, but it's still too early to tell. Wang Yibo in his element as Xie Yun, may even produce a better performance than his role in The Untamed. The drama is still only 7 episodes in, will give ranking when finished. ?/10
Looking forward to:
Immortality - based on danmei novel The Husky and His White Cat Shizun by 肉包不吃肉 starring Chen Feiyu and Luo Yunxi
Winner Is King - based on the danmei novel Sha Po Lang by Priest starring Tan Jianci and Chen Zheyuan
A Tale of The Wanderers - based on danmei novel Faraway Wanderers by Priest starring Zhang Zhehan and Gong Jun
Douluo Continent - based on xuanhuan novel Soul Land by 唐家三少 starring Xiao Zhan and Wu Xuanyi
Step By Step Lotus - based on historical novel Return to Ming Dynasty as Prince by 月关 starring Zhang Binbin and Luo Yunxi
Feng Qi Long Xi - based on historical novel of the same name by Ma Bo Yong starring Zhu Yilong and Deng Lun
Sword Snow Stride - based on the xuanhuan novel The Snowy Path of the Heroic Blade by 烽火戏诸侯 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Hu Jun
Heaven Official's Blessing - based on danmei novel of the same name by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu - cast unknown
Thousand Autumns - based on danmei novel of the same name by Meng Xi Shi - cast unknown
Joy Of Life Season 2 - based on wuxia novel of the same name by 猫腻 starring Zhang Ruoyun and Li Qin
A League of Nobleman - based on danmei novel The Society of Four Leaves by Da Feng Gua Guo starring Song Weilong and Jing Boran
Flying Phoenix - based on danmei novel of the same name by 風弄 starring Dai Jingyao and Shu Yaxin

Tumblr media
“owning the land is equal to owning the sky and the wind.”
Premise (spoilers for the first episode and the existence of a major character).
in the pseudo-Bronze Age, two races of people (the sarams and the neanthals) live in an uneasy co-existence. the sarams want an alliance for the neanthal’s lands so that they can farm and mine, the neanthals are like lol we don’t need any of that because we actually have survivalist skills so keep your agriculture you nerds b y e.
the leader of the saram is Not Having That, and sends an envoy (asa hon) to allegedly act as a diplomat. what she actually does is unknowingly carries a plague that wipes out a huge chunk of the neanthals. because that is not enough, the leader sends his son (tagon) to wrap up the rest of this genocide.
asa hon is betrayed and upset and doesn’t return to the sarams. instead, she shacks up with a surviving neanthal named ragaz and they have spoilers twin boys spoilers, hybrids known as igutu. based on Prophecy, any children born under the blue flame comet are Destined to bring calamity. so, doom babies. they are two doom babies.
after killing ragaz, tagon snatches one of the babies For Reasons, and asa hon flees with the other
flashforward about a decade.
the neanthals are extinct OR ARE THEY we get a pretty Quick understanding of who tagon is as a human as he’s re-introduced drinking out of one of their skulls before being surrounded by his hypemen who chant his name Gaston style. he’s joined by taeahla, and they are a Match Made in Hell. it’s quickly revealed that taeahl is raising the other twin baby, who is kept hidden because he’s igutu. and, like, tagon’s famous because he killed all of the neanthal, so having one of their hybrid babies is ngl
asa hon makes it to a land beyond the saram’s influence, where she and eunseom come across a tribe called wahan. they’re lead by a ten-year-old tanya, who had a dream that eunseom would arrive. which is a big deal, because sarams can’t dream. it turns out tanya was also born on Blue Comet Doom Prophecy Day. asa hon dies from the injuries she obtained saving her son, and eunseom is raised by the wahan tribe. it’s a very idyllic existence for them.
until tagon and his men invade in a manifest-destiny-realness bid to capture slaves and conquer land and ruin wahan’s coachella festival before enslaving all of them and bringing what survives of the tribe to arthdal.
the plot then centers around eunseom trying to rescue the wahan tribe, the wahan tribe trying to survive arthdal, and something about gods being reborn, political backstabbing, a church cult being absolute dicks, and a lot of interchangeable evil old men
it’s a fucking awesome show.
Characters.
Eunseom
Tumblr media
A PRECIOUS BEAN BABY
eunseom’s been a part of the wahan tribe since he was ten, but everyone (especially him) is aware he’s Different From The Rest of the Reindeer. the only one who treats him the same is tanya, and it’s clear these two are joined at the hip. he has dreams of being locked away in a tower, has a bunch of ~strange~ ideas like trying to ride horses, and is totes crushing on the soon-to-be village wise woman. once the wahan village is attacked, he makes it his mission to save the tribe and his One True Love tanya
pure. does not think things through. just wants to believe in people, god damn it.
tanya
Tumblr media
my wife daughter of the wahanian version of “crazy old maurice,” and apprentice to the Great Mother of the Tribe. as another child born under the Doom Comet, she’s been known as the Prophesied One since birth (the One Who Will Break the Shell). we meet her as she’s struggling to follow in the Great Mother’s footsteps, and her journey is grounded in uncovering her mystical destiny. naive and a fish out of water, she leads her people in surviving arthdal after their enslavement
moves like jagger. center of a reverse harem. by her pretty flower crown she can end you
tagon
Tumblr media
this bitch but also that bitch. almost single-handedly responsible for the genocide of the neanthals, tagon’s grown into the leader of an army that is the definition of ride-or-die for him. he has a 100% approval rating in arthdal due to defeating the neanthal, defeating the ago tribe, and defeating the will to live for the thousands of slaves he supplies for arthdal’s terrible economic system. he starts the series off with Pure Intentions, in that he wants to rule but he wants to do it by The Love of The People. because that works out well for people who habitually wear black cloaks
poster child #1 for arthdal’s fantastic hair products for men, will smirk you to death, you feel sorry for him a lot and you’re like why?? but then yeaaah, can only stare in heart eyes at his partner in subterfuge...
taeahla
Tumblr media
MY WIFE said partner in subterfuge. i cannot spell her fucking name ever. her and tagon have been Not Together for over ten years. she’s the heiress to the hae tribe, who are known for their inventions and are the only tribe that knows how to smith bronze into weapons. therefore she’s hot shit. and also just hot. she seems like the character You’re Not Going to Like but she became one of my favorites after the first episode.
she wants to help tagon in his ambitions, but she also v much wants to see his ambitions help herself. her and tagon made an Oath to never sacrifice their survival for the other and that’s the most metal thing i’ve ever heard. she wears couture. would get a pre-nup. can and will fuck you up. and she also raises the Hidden Igutu Twin Doom Baby...SPOILERS
saya
Tumblr media
so at this point you’re probably thinking a few things: this show needs more beautiful hair and pro fashion sense, a complete shit stirrer, and a morally ambiguous pretty boy.
well well well
saya is eunseom’s twin brother, although neither of them know about the other’s existence. because of their neanthal blood, they can see snapshots of each other’s lives in their dreams. as his existence would lead to death, and would DEFINITELY garner tagon some bad PR, saya’s been locked away in his princess tower for the majority of his life. he views tagon and taeahla as his father and mother, and that’s not necessarily a good thing.
daddy’s boy. wants to kill birds for fun. has the hots for the girl who can teach him how to kill birds for fun. surprisingly religious???
Other support characters selected by how much they are my favorites.
Tumblr media
mubaek. an OG warrior and tired wine uncle
Tumblr media
chae eun. daughter of the somehow singular doctor in arthdal and the only one who actually wants to help people. INCREDIBLE knit wear
Tumblr media
xabara WARRIOR QUEEN OF A TRIBE OF MERMEN
Tumblr media
yangcha. like. just look at him. you already know he was your favorite character in the 923840923 angsty anime you watched in 2010. Ultimate Warrior for tagon who has Taken a Vow of Silence and Wears A Half Mask So You Know He’s Actually Hot. the mask is torn off his face dramatically at least once. there’s a quota for that kind of thing, you know
Tumblr media
this horse.
Drawbacks.
it’s very much an Ensemble show, which means if you’re only watching for 1-2 characters you’re likely going to get frustrated. there’s several plot lines going on
there’s a lot of Interchangeable Evil Old Men and i dont care about any of them
IT ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER AND SEASON 2 ISNT CONFIRMED YET ISNT GONNA BE UNTIL LIKE 2022
Reasons to Watch.
WORLD BUILDING. im a huge nerd for world building and the lore in this makes me so happy.
AESTHETICS. find me a more beautiful cast with more beautiful scenery and costumes. you can’t.
i love?? all the leads???? like normally i get frustrated with the second leads in dramas, but i genuinely love all of them and was interested in all of their stories. this show has an incredible cast/set of actors and they bring it home
im a sucker for romance. there’s some great ones. and omg do you know how rare it is to see a reverse harem?! get it, tanya
the time era is cool!!
Gods doing Mystical God Shit
so many female characters!!!!!! AND NONE OF THEM FIGHT OVER A MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND THEY’RE ALL BETTER AT THEIR JOBS
Final Thoughts.
WATCH THE THING
IT’S ON NETFLIX

'He’s going from Father to Uncle! Olivier Award winner, Emmy Award nominee, and Golden Globe nominee Andrew Scott will star in Vanya off Broadway this spring, running for eight weeks only starting March 11. Opening night is March 18 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
Scott is best known for his roles as the Hot Priest on the TV show Fleabag (Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series), Moriarty on the TV show Sherlock (BAFTA Television Award for Best Supporting Actor), and Adam in the movie All of Us Strangers (Golden Globe nomination). He also earned an Emmy nomination for leading an episode of the Netflix show Black Mirror.
He first led Vanya, playwright Simon Stephens’s one-man adaptation of the classic Anton Chekhov play Uncle Vanya, in London’s West End in fall 2023, earning a 2024 Olivier nomination. Scott will reprise his performance off Broadway, playing all eight characters. The show marks his first return to the New York stage since 2006's The Vertical Hour on Broadway.
“I love this masterpiece of a play," Scott said in a statement. I love these heartbreaking, hilarious, sexy, characters. I love my colleagues with whom I made this show. I love New York. So, I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring Vanya to the audiences at the Lortel Theatre. See you then!”
In a five-star review of Vanya on London Theatre, one critic said of Scott’s performance, “You won’t find a more remarkable actor doing a more remarkable piece of theatre anywhere in the West End.”
Sam Yates returns to direct the production. Vanya also features set design by Rosanna Vize, lighting design by James Farncombe, sound design by Dan Balfour, video design by Jack Phelan, movement direction by Michela Meazza, music by Kelly Moran, and costume design by Natalie Pryce...'

32, 34, 36, and 38 for the 2020 asks? :D
Thank you, Matt!! :D <3 Sorry it took a hot minute!
32. Favorite book you read this year?
Oooh this one is hard! Just in these last two months alone I’ve read 34 books - most for my Masters program - but the ones I liked the best were ‘Choking Back the Devil’ by Donna Lynch (poetry) and ‘Priestdaddy’ by Patricia Lockwood (memoir). Most of my professors seemed to pick post-apocalyptic fic or dystopian fic, both of which are not my cups of tea, but it was nice to read Lockwood’s memoir. It was hilarious, and casual, and talked about Priests having to learn what furries are and being afraid of Milfs. I’m pretty sure I stopped every other page to take a picture of just...how absolutely hilarious it was.
Now, like, I’m not Catholic, nor religious, but I can see that the book could either be hella cathartic to a former Catholic, or hella blasphemous to a practicing Catholic. So uh, that’s my only warning beyond there are some minor themes of sexual assault - only discussed for a paragraph or two in the 300-something page book - due to Lockwood’s experiences, since it is a memoir.
‘Choking Back the Devil’ by Donna Lynch was a book I read for my poetry final earlier this year when I was graduating undergrad, and it is a beautiful book of horror poetry. From Kelpies to internal struggles, there’s gore and so much in that book - but the way Lynch put the poems together, just - her mind - amazing.
34. Favorite movie you watched this year?
Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn. OKAY. BEAUTIFUL. SO MANY WORDS.
Tumblr media
I walked out of that theatre feeling better than I’d felt all year. When I talk about being empowered - THAT’S THE FUCKIN MOVIE. THAT’S IT. I just - I’m still speechless when it comes to that movie. Fucking fantastic in every way - actors? FUCK YES. Costuming? I’m drooling. Cinnamon tography? Hell yeah. Action scenes? Beating the shit out of cops? Ewan McGregor as the sort-of suave villain?!?! Harley with her babies?!
The sandwich scene alone - the angst and sorrow - that should earn them like, ten Oscars. And a BAFTA too because why the fuck not.
36. Favorite series that you watched this year?
Dead Like Me. It’s a pretty old show, as far as shows go, but it follows this girl named Georgia. One day, as she’s going to work, she stops walking and gets killed by a falling toilet from the ISS. However, from then on, she becomes a  Grim Reaper, taking people’s souls before they die so they don’t feel pain, along with a rag-tag group of other dead people; they’re lead by Mandy Patinkin and he’s absolutely fab.
It’s a cute little show, definitely a comedy, and comes at the plot a lot like Buffy the Vampire Slayer did - which is hella good and I cannot stop boosting it lol! I think it’s still on Amazon Prime too! Not sure where else to find it, but it’s probably easily pirated.
38. Favorite artist this year?
Oh that’s easy - as always - Barns Courtney, with Fall Out Boy in a close second. Barns, earlier in the year, released a new EP and it’s hella sad, but catchy! It’s the Hard to Be Alone EP . ‘Missing You’ and ‘Home’ are my favs.
