There are many more ideas I’d love to share on how to make your houseguest’s stay memorable, but alas I can’t give away all of my secrets!

My tips can be adapted and changed to suit your needs and tastes and most importantly your guest’s needs and tastes. Furthermore, how well you know your houseguest will determine how far you should go with your ideas.

Tip #5: A Diptyque candle is a very special bedside companion. They smell divine and are perfect to help a guest unwind before bed.

Alternatively, you can spray a lavender mist on their pillow or pop it beside the bed for them to use. I love doing this for our house guests.

It’s like creating a custom “turndown service” for them.

Tip #4: Organise a stack of literature for them to read before bed. An issue of Vogue, a few dog-eared copies of Emily Dickinson poetry, George Orwell short stories, Thoreau’s Walden and that day’s newspaper would be amongst my picks, (depending on the guest of course.) Choose whatever you think they’d like that you have in house.

Tip #3: Place a silk sleep mask on their pillow before bed. They may not use it, but having the option is nice. If they do use it they’ll have you to thank for the introduction! I couldn’t do without mine.

Tip #2: Add a carafe to their bedside table or somewhere within their reach if they’re crashing on your settee. Alternatively, a nice bottle of water and a glass from your cupboard for pouring will do beautifully.
