So I was planning my trip to Charleston for a family reunion and wanted to try something different and adventurous that reminds me of our family’s journeys in Europe at hostels. I remembered my son Byron telling me about the @notsohostel and decided to give it a try. Thanks Byron, I did and it was great! These older homes have been converted into lodging for guests at inexpensive prices. They are cozy and allow for meeting and interchanging with guests with similar travel experiences. It brought back fun family memories and Meagan and I met two guys from Germany. The hostel is centrally located, near many of the places most people want to visit while in Charleston and the neighborhood is nice. My thanks to the staff for their assistance and hospitality! It would be great to have more hostels in the US. #hostel #hostellife #hostelworld #travel #traveling #travelling #travelguide #travelers #traveltheworld #travellite #travelsimple #simpletravel #simpletravels #charlestonsc #charlestonhistoricdistrict #lodging #vacation #familyreunion #hostelstay #southcarolina #travelsouthcarolina #discoversouthcarolina #veterantraveler #military #militaryfamilytravel #militaryfamily #retiredmilitarywife #retiredmilitaryfamily #sclowcountry #charlestoncounty #charlestonhostel #charleston #charlestoncharm #hospitality (at Charleston, South Carolina) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bz6rsVUAdct/?igshid=252isj5t4n01

Traveling on a Budget: Toronto
Contributed by Hannah Haphlen
Tumblr media
Spring break was here, or nearly so, and I needed to get away. I was in college, 1500 miles away from home, and wanted to explore some place new. But where would I go? Florida sounded too cliché, and Mexico was out of the question for my budget. Hostels were my next bet.
I arrived at Canada as the destination after watching Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and hearing about it through friends. Hotel prices were high in the city, and the only way I could have feasibly done it was to either stay a shorter period or park my bags at a hotel around 50 km away from the outskirts of the city. I looked up hostels, trying to find a cheaper option, and found All Days Hostel in the eastern part of Toronto. Booking through www.hostelworld.com, I perused Google Maps’ Street View to make sure I’d be mentally prepared to drive through the city and arrive at the correct destination. In addition, I had invited my roommate to come with me, if only to ease the financial pain and to have a partner in crime.
Toronto, if you didn’t know, is basically all glass. Driving into the city is pretty awe-inspiring, and I encourage anyone to do it. We arrived at the hostel and drove around for a parking spot, which was tough considering where the hostel actually sits. Nestled in a row of brownstones, across the street from an apartment/business tower and flanked by townhomes with private parking spots, our destination peeked through handsome trees along the street. We parked and walked up to the front door, where a red telephone instructed us to ring for assistance. After a few rings and a pause, a middle-aged man opened the door and greeted us warmly. Checking in was fairly easy: the owner, who greeted us at the door, calculated the currency exchange and happily accepted the hunk of cash we forked over. The décor was nice, warm and inviting, and looked like we were in an actual hotel. Glancing around we noticed the phone station, library, computer room and tourist kiosk. There were signs posted on the walls of community events, tours and deals for the tenants, and we saw two young gentleman reading books from the library in the room towards the back. I would have taken advantage of the deals presented, but because I’m impatient and was eager to get on the subway I declined – the community deals and tours were good, and the coupons in the kiosk were pretty budget-friendly themselves.
After check-in, we received a parking card for the underground garage next door. I figured that for the amount of money I saved in airfare, $10 CAD per day was not a bad deal being in a large city. My hometown charges $15 USD in downtown, and we don’t even have a good bus system OR a subway. We parked, emptied our luggage and trekked over the 200 meters to the hostel, up the stairs and into our room.
We had booked for a two-person private suite, which included two twin beds, nice closet space with luggage room at the top and bottom, a large dresser and a TV. We were placed in a front-facing room with a Juliet balcony, upstairs and directly over reception.
The kitchens were fully functional and updated: stainless steel appliances, a full range stove and oven, a large refrigerator and plenty of counter and cabinet space. Cleaning supplies and silverware were included, and rules stated that anything used was to be cleaned afterward. The sheets were clean and the room well-kept, the bathroom was nice and the shower was lovely. I would have settled for some bathmats, but for the price I was paying I didn’t complain. From my understanding the brownstone was longer than it was wide, and thus there were suites of rooms that held bunkbeds for those who wanted to pay as little as $15 CAD per night. These rooms also looked clean and had good online reviews, but were co-ed and the price was contingent on the entire room having to be filled at the same time. It was better for us to pay for our privacy rather than an entire unused room, although I’m sure we could have spread out. But as the saying goes: When in Canada, be nice like the Canadians, eh.
After dumping our luggage, we hopped on the wi-fi and pulled up Google Maps to locate the nearest subway station. Luckily, it was right around the corner. All Days Hostel is located near the Bloor and Sherbourne, and just a short walk (about one mile) down Bloor meant we had access to all the fun shopping, great food and all the TimBits we could eat. The subways were mid-range in price, but I felt like we saw more of the city walking up and down Bloor.
During the trip, we met up with an old friend of mine, who then introduced us to (dun, dun, DUNNN) real live Canadians. They even said, “eh”, at the end of their sentences! Trekking to the western part of the city, we were met with gasps and caution when we revealed where we were staying. Apparently the area was rampant with transients and vagrants, boarded up houses and old-fashioned break-ins. The truth? Toronto itself is like a safer New York City. I felt safe enough to go to the local Loblaw’s to pick up some 2 a.m. bagged milk and baklava, alone. After gorging on poutine and a few pints of local beer, we headed back and did notice one thing: on the Eastbound track at Sherbourne station, there is a seedy exit to a seedier street. The exit opened up to what looked like a dock for the building, and the houses along the street were boarded up.
My roommate took a few cigarette breaks on the front porch, and inevitably met up with a real, live Mounted Policeman straight from Nova Scotia. At first we thought he was a little odd, but soon a conversation revealed his former occupation. He was pure French-Canadian, and apparently knew the owners of the hostel, who were letting him board for his heart rehabilitation. Ah, you just can’t beat Canadian healthcare. In addition, we often chatted with the other boarders, and entertained their shenanigans when they came home from St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. The walls were paper thin, but it was comforting to know that other people our age were right next to us, soaking up the same fun we were.
My stay in a hostel in Toronto, Canada, proved more of a hotel stay than a true hostel experience like you see in the horror movies. This trip set me back roughly $600 USD, not including gas and souvenirs and the stop back at Niagara Falls ($10 - $20 CAD for parking, by the way). Split between two people, the entire trip range about $1000.00 total, including every expense given from both parties. And this is being generous. For most hostels, it was on the higher end of a budget, but also far nicer and less dorm-like. If you are ever looking to stay in Toronto, please do consider this place an option. Family-owned and operated, close to everything and more like a Motel 6 than anything else, I’m certain that you could find something to like.
