Hostel Review: Ghent- Hostel Uppelink
For nearly our entire stay in Ghent, we were met with surprised congratulations for making the trip. Apparently, tourists tend to overlook the city in favor of Bruges and Antwerp. It’s hard to imagine why- most of the city’s historic architecture is well preserved and restored and frankly stunning to walk around in. Funnily enough, during my research for Ghent, I’d started getting targeted…

Zero Day Director commentary - With actor Andre Keuck
#movies#film#cinema#Damn I wish Cal was here#Andre and Ben are really interesting to listen to#This movie is one of those movies where it needs like 3 commentaries#It needs one with just Ben Coccio by himself#then one with Cal and Andre by themselves#then another with all 3 of them#Not all movies do that but I love when studios/filmmakers have multiple commentaries to create a sense of thorough intimacy#due to the nature of how commentaries are set up they can be quite restrictive/pressing/limited with no pauses or rewinds.#so I find cast/crew don't have enough time or able to present how they would like to if they could edit/rewind or pause for fluent presenta#So I love when they have director commentaries and actor commentaries or composer commentaries#Platoon's dvd extras are so dope they got multiple commentaries and one with military adviser Dale Dye who was a RL vietnam vet#Or Hostel's commentaries where one is just Eli Roth and another is Tarantino and Eli Roth with Scott Spiegal#idk if Zero Day ever got a blu-ray release but I think it should but the DV technology of the camera is kinda at it's limit of resolution#but an AI upscaling with 20 years later retrospective with Ben Cal and Andre would be sooo dope along with updated commentaries#Every few years I always rewatch Zero Day so that time has come that last few days lol#Ever since Columbine as a lil kid I have always been into spree-murders and active shooter incidents#I remember reading a peer-reviewed paper called Pseudo-Commandos#And Eric and Dylan and Andre and Cal would be dubbed Pseudo-Commandos where they dress up in a semi-military fashion#and have a delusion of superiority mixed with perceived sense of persecution whether it's true or not#it went into the Postal shooter from the 80s as well and what he went through along#plus I read another book called Going Postal which also went into postal shootings along with school shootings#I want to make a film about spree murders or an active shooter/s but I remember just getting so tired of the subject matter#because every 3 weeks there was some new shooter in the headlines and I found myself not wanting to be exploitative#When I write/direct my film I'd like it to address and study the character of such an individual but not try to be too political#or exploitative and focus on the ambiguities that are left behind when someone does this#as a society I noticed we stopped asking the questions on why and stopped having constructive conversations#it feels like as a coping mechanism we've started treating them like tornados or natural disasters

Weekend in Amsterdam: Feeling Thru the Music
Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 21st-23rd
Ciao! This week my studies brings me to Amsterdam, the notorious city with loads of history, culture, fashion, and modern art. This weekend happened to be Summer Solstice, in which every day the sun was out for the most time available during the year. Additionally, the Euro cup held the Netherlands competing against France, in which colors of bright orange were found all over the atmosphere. All of these come together to brew up a perfect storm for my three days in this city.
To start, the first night was spent at the Generator hostel built inside an old university building. The area was a park with several historical classroom buildings, and the inside was beautifully renovated to keep the essence of the once lecture halls fused with the night life in your young adult years. Underneath was a club in an opened up concrete room. There was a bar, in which the workers were already jamming out to the heavy techno. Their was a mix of graffiti as well as some plants around, giving the vibe of an overgrown train station. The event held was the "Mediterranea Summer Solstice Edition" held at the Oosterbar. I walked in to the techno set of COSMIC SAB, a French DJ deep in the Rave scene. His music brought up the lively energy and opened me up to start getting comfortable on the floor.
I am progressing my dancing to improve my knowledge of the rave and electronic culture, as I know dancing is a big deal. Ever since Diplo at ACL, where I saw people dancing for the pure sport of it, I have been trying to get more comfortable with my moves. A major step in dancing getting over was how you are perceived. I find that wearing sunglasses in the club helps with this, as you look confident no matter how silly you think you look. Finding my internal tempo was what I began to learn with this set, and getting more comfortable with my arms was my biggest progression this weekend. Observing an older gentlemen who was so smooth with his robot-like moves inspired me to be more comfortable with my arms.
The next duo up especially helped with this, having a mathematical electronic set that at points were hard to figure out. loosening up felt difficult with such concrete bass, but when I solved the mental puzzle of the beat I shined. After the show I had a conversation with the aforementioned older man and shared that he was helpful for me. He was ecstatic, instantly giving me a hug and sharing a conversation with me. His journeys were plentiful and fulfilling, having spent many years in Amsterdam and living in numerous places across Europe with his wife. The moment felt surreal to me, giving me joy that I could share my journey with another soul, and vice versa.
The next night was a bigger event, being the 10th Year Anniversary for the hipster-coated hotel "Volkshotel". This 10 story building held parties in the hotel unlike anything I've ever seen before. On the top floor, there were open patios accompanied by DJ sets, giving us a view of that Amsterdam sunset at around 11 PM. We continued down the floors to a DJ set of this vibrant soul, singing along with his music giving the bubbly set a flair of passion. His energy transcended amongst the crowds, allowing me to forget about everything else in life for the moment. The art of DJing is better appreciated being in the crowd; I believe the skill individuals have as they invoke emotions into crowds of people through music is an impressive one. It is for this reason I believe that the culture of music and creativity creates a more fulfilling life and sense of content for these locals, as they all seem to know each other and do these events on a regular basis.
I ended the night I faced the "boss level" as me and my roommate put it: Floor -1 - DOKA. This is where the music was playing until 7 AM, that of which I knew I needed to visit before passing out on my 4 hours of sleep. After tapping out my roommate, I went to face the epitome of raving head on alone. The moment I passed the entrance on the basement floor, I was hit with a humid cloud of smoke, sweat, and bodies. Coming in at ~4 30 AM, I had come to the depth of the night and felt the beats shake the room of dancing souls. After shimming my way down to the middle, I danced amongst people all doing their own thing. While a couple was making out in front of me, I could appreciate the tenured sound of the older DJs. Wanting a closer look, I shimmied my way up to see the four DJ boards being shared between two gentlemen. It was surreal, I was looking at the equipment of Amsterdam, being used to keep an entire crowd going into the deep hours of the night. This was it, the reason I travelled all this way to Amsterdam. 5000 miles away and I was viewing the heart and soul of the night life in Europe.
After having enough sweat reach my eyes, I walked outside to dawn approaching, and felt accomplished. I had just partied all night until the morning in Amsterdam. I sat outside and observed the drunken adults, sharing cigarettes, conversations, and stories from all over. So many accents surrounding my soundscape, I was star stricken at the diversity, coming to appreciate a major factor of Amsterdam: People come from all over the world to unite through the love and power of music. This is reflected in its citizens of the city all knowing each other through partying. While I understand this scene comes with a less-than-ideal world of bad decisions, there is a human nature aspect that draws us all to continue coming back: that is music, the real addiction.
Leaving Amsterdam was the only pill I had to swallow, this city was a delight to visit and I am very grateful that my life led me to this opportunity, I certainly have an aspiration to move here in my future. What I can take away to America from this trip, is the power of music and toleration. The culture from a glimpse seems to be friendly, content, and connected, and I believe I can implement some of these traits into my personal life coming back. May music heal us all, and until next time,

Movie Review | Hostel: Part II (Roth, 2007)
Tumblr media
I sat out the torture porn boom when it was playing out, so when I finally got to Hostel years later, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a much more intelligent and atmospheric movie than I’d been led to believe, with more to say about masculinity, the pursuit of excess and desensitization than it seemed to have gotten credit for upon its release. The first half played like any other fratboy sex comedy from the era, a trio of meatheaded male college students on a sex and drug fueled trip that soon finds them in over their heads, the movie steadily accumulating a certain grim, industrial atmosphere. It was not the nonstop torture fest I’d been led to expect.
This one presents a similar structure, but switches the protagonists to a trio of female college students, and perhaps loses some of the satirical edge of the original. These characters behave credibly and are well acted, and given Eli Roth’s edgelord tendencies, I appreciated that he actually seemed sympathetic to them, but at the same time, I don’t think he brought any specific angle to these characters. There’s perhaps a bit of gentle ribbing at one character’s journalistic tendencies, but this is far from the mean spirited smugness he brought to, for example, the idealistic activists in The Green Inferno. And he is perceptive to the harassment they receive from males in their vicinity. But I don't think he really identifies with them.
If anything, the characters he does seem to identify with are a pair of middle aged men looking to reassert their masculinity by buying into the commercialized torture and murder ring. One of these men seems especially nebbish, hiding behind his glasses and his timid voice before the true extent of his misogyny and capacity for violence is revealed, using the opportunity to act out on his hatred of his wife. Roth of all filmmakers skewered the “nice guy” archetype a decade before it became a tired thinkpiece talking point.
Other than that, this is a pretty effective slice of horror, having the same grungy, decaying atmosphere of the original, but maybe injecting a few bursts of more flamboyant style, like with an icky sexualized Bathory style bloodletting scene. I will note that I find torture style violence pretty unpleasant to sit through, and I can’t say I didn’t look away a few times during this movie, but I did appreciate that the one time this went for a glib punchline, it actually seemed to land satirically instead of working as pure excess. And Roth may be a dingus, but he has the wisdom to cast Edwige Fenech as an art teacher and have her bark “Hands on your pencils, boys!” and he deserves at least a few points for that.

Hostel (2024) Movie Review: predictable horror
Tumblr media
Two American backpackers in Amsterdam, Josh (Derek Richardson) and Paxton (Jay Hernandez), along with their Icelandic friend, Oli are lured into a hostel Slovakia where they are told the woman are eagar to pleasure American men. They’re travelling Europe for a last trip before they graduate from college, so there are no holds barred when it comes to sex, drugs and anything else that comes their way. Once they reach Slovaki, Josh and “Pax” hook up with 2 very accommodating and very beautiful women, Natalya and Svetlana, and things go a bit weird.
This was definitely a whirlwind 1 hour and 35 minutes. Any longer and things may have gone very, very wrong and very, very long. Jay Hernandez was good as Paxton, as far as performances go…but my goodness, this stupid guy made some pretty stupid decisions. I won’t go into them here because you’ll kill me for spoiling the movie. The movie was rather predictable, but in an enjoyable way, if you know what I mean. You knew what was coming up and it’s kind of what you wanted to happen. Many people got their just desserts and that’s all I’ll say!
Final comment: If these guys had put Canadian flag patches on their backpacks, they may not have run into so many problems. It seems that Americans are very valuable in this grotesque game.

so interesting to me that hostels are such a big thing everywhere else in the world, but in the US, they're barely even considered an option when looking for somewhere to stay. there is one hostel in the entirety of the city near me. they're so practical too, 30 bucks or below for a bed and somewhere to store your stuff for the night. that's such a lifesaver for so many people, not just travellers. less airbnbs, more hostels please

Let's talk about the Blair Witch Project and the Upcoming Remake.
I’m sure we have all heard by now the CinemaCon announcement about a Blair Witch remake from Blumhouse and Lionsgate. This makes me nervous for a couple of reasons. Firstly, The Blair Witch Project was the first horror movie I saw in a theatre. I would have been 9 or 10 years old, I went with my mum and sister. It probably wasn’t the best parenting decision on my mothers behalf, as both myself…

Review: Circus Hostel Berlin
Price and accommodations were decent. I didn't use the showers, but the bathrooms were fair. There were lockers in the basement for luggage, and they were willing to keep my bigger piece behind the desk for me for a bit. The storage in the individual rooms were big enough to fit my mid-sized suitcase and had a place to put a lock (if you have one (of the right size)).
Lots of David Hasselhoff. Vaguely threatening at times, but not bad.
The cafe there is pretty good. I got The Local and a bottled mango smoothie.
There are various shops and restaurants in the area. It's also in the area of Marienkirche and Hackesche Höfe.
