okay people here’s a proposition for you that i’ve been thinking about nonstop lately

CORNLEY DOES SWEENEY TODD

if this has been done before i apologize, but i haven’t seen it so i figured i’d compile my thoughts!

i know it’s sondheim. i know they’re not necessarily the most musically inclined (cough cough nativity cough cough) would chris do it anyway? absolutely he would. would it go horribly wrong? obviously.

i’m gonna put the bulk of the text under the cut so i don’t ruin people’s scrolling but if you’re interested i’ve got a LOT written down!

okay initial casting:

- CHRIS is SWEENEY. i think people would roll their eyes at that but he would SO enjoy the drama of it all. he seems a bit too posh for the role but i think with the right stage makeup and a month or so without a haircut he could pull it off. he loves a good descent into madness and wants to try being all broody. his voice isn’t QUITE low enough for it though so they have to pitch up most of the songs a step or two. it’s a pain.

- ANNIE is MRS. LOVETT. i think this casting is absolutely perfect tbh, she would be SO GOOD at the manic, over the top energy and i think she’d love to go a little feral. character voice!! wild physicality!! annie is perfect!! and just imagine the VOCALS. this would probably be the best performance in the show. props to her <3

- SANDRA is JOHANNA. yeah, basic, but it works. obviously sandra can do the whole damsel thing pretty well, but she could probably beg great the bit of madness that johanna falls into in the second act as well! easy casting.

- just as easily, MAX is clearly ANTHONY. sweet, naive boy who’s desperately in love. no deliberation necessary. he’s pure and perfect and definitely plays up the innocence.

- ROBERT is JUDGE TURPIN. i think he can definitely be menacing enough, and would totally enjoy playing opposite chris in this role because he can mess with him a lot.

- DENNIS is the BEADLE. love putting him in a duo with robert, but also i think there are lots of opportunities for comedy with him in this role (see below)

- LUCY is TOBY!!! we got a hint of lucy as little orphan boy in christmas carol and i think she’d do a really good job with this role! it’s the biggest one she’s had with cornley so far and i’m sure she’d be nervous but the audience would ADORE her.

- VANESSA is the BEGGAR WOMAN/LUCY BARKER. this casting has the possibility of either a ridiculously good performance or a VERY awkward one. she’d probably feel very self-conscious about being so unhinged and wild, but hopefully she’d get into more as the show progresses.

- JONATHAN is PIRELLI and JONAS FOGG. i want to see greg tannahill with a silly italian accent and then a silly irish accent. that’s all. also he’d kill it.

- TREVOR is doing all of his wonderful tech stuff and also stands in as a bunch of the people that sweeney kills! and also some other stuff lmao

running bits:

- lots of mishaps with the blood. nothing working the way it’s supposed to. many necks begin spraying blood at the completely wrong times (very much like chris’s unfortunate gunshot bit in harper’s locket). they brush it off as some sort of plague that’s been affecting the whole of london. chris is stained all over with red as early as “worst pies”

- they actually try to make sweeney’s chair-chute work in real time, dropping actors (mainly trevor) directly from the barbershop on the second level into the “basement” of the shop, and it goes pretty badly. almost every time they use it trevor almost gets stuck, and he gets out somehow (occasionally with some smoke or crashes ptgw-elevator style yk yk)

- whenever vanessa as the beggar woman calls out for the beadle, dennis comes on stage, and they keep having to shoo him off

- one member of the ensemble is consistently off tempo by one or two beats, either vocally or with the dance. the music is supposed to feel discordant but this just feels wrong lmao

- there are a lot of delays. sondheim always requires cues to be TIGHT and PRECISE and cornley is consistently off the mark on that. i will elaborate below.

scene by scene:

- opening is decent but chris gets stuck on his entrance or something and so the strings just sorta go for a while and they wait and wait and wait for him to pop out and then he finally does

- at one point during worst pies, something falls off of annie’s costume (a fake eyelash or something) and into the pie she needs to give chris. he sees this. they both panic for a second but the song is so fast that they can’t really take it out

- they get to “if you doubt it take a bite” and just pause and stare at each other in fear and chris slowwwwwly eats it

- the ensuing disgust is genuine

- during “poor thing”, the flashback of his wife is supposed to be recorded and projected on the back of the stage. as it goes with cornley and projectors, something else is shown, ala dennis’s birthday in ccgw, and annie just continues to sing over it

- it’s nothing too horrible, just embarrassing

- maybe somehow the events in the video follow along with the lyrics in an ironic way? i don’t have a specific idea for this yet so lmk if you think of one

- when chris throws his arm up with the razor at the end of “my friends”, the blade goes flying into the audience. screams are heard. they proceed as normal.

- there’s GOTTA be something with the birds after “ah miss”, i don’t have ideas but im sure someone will

- pirelli’s miracle elixir is wild. lucy is doing great but BOTH of her wigs come off with the hat when she has her big reveal, and ends up doing the song about her pin-curled real hair and everyone just goes along with it

- ahhh, classic jonathan moment. during pirelli’s, there’s a little facade with a door that jonathan is supposed to burst out of at the end for the big button. of course, it doesn’t work. he can’t get the door open, everyone waits in silence and watches the knob jiggle. he walks around the side and they all gasp again and carry on

- “ladies and their sensitivities” starts out well but then robert starts singing over the top to be heard, and sandra fights back, and by the end everyone is screaming

- robert is a total pain during pretty women etc

- max gets held up during pretty women somehow and doesn’t burst in when he’s supposed to, chris is waiting to kill turpin but without max’s cue we have a lodge-style “ohhhh im gonna do it” kinda thing and they end up whistling more back and forth until max arrives

- for some reason they make annie run all the way up and down the stairs each time she gets interrupted in “god that’s good.” her frustration with sweeney and her total exhaustion is not false.

- dennis parlor songs. say no more.

- of course, there has to be a moment where vanessa is forced to improvise. i’d go with one of her little crazy lullabies being dragged out because the music cuts off (during the end of city on fire, maybe?) and she has to come up with more wild babble and it’s so uncomfortable for everyone lmao

- during “by the sea,” they try to have a silly little dream sequence of the beach with puppets of seagulls and fish. i’ll let you use your imagination there.

- similar to pretty women, robert keeps adding to the ending scene so chris can’t kill him. something like:

- “the face of a barber, the face of a prisoner isn’t memorable” or whatever the line is

- “it really isn’t. who are you?”

- long, frustrated chris bean pause. “…surely you know me, sir.”

- “not at all.”

- “benjamin barker?”

- “you certainly look like a barker. shave your own face for once, dog.”

- “robert—“

- “is that your name? i’ve never met a robert, sir.”

- and so on and so forth until chris just walks over and does the throat slit without the cue

- when vanessa is supposed to go down the chute at the end as lucy’s body, she gets stuck and annie pulls trevor out in a bad wig as a stand-in body for chris to weep over. robert is supposed to fall out of the chute still in the process of dying, but he gets stuck behind vanessa and just makes agonized noises from inside the chute. it makes for a very strange image. he continues to make these noises throughout the scene after he’s supposed to be fully dead, and it undercuts the drama quite a bit.

Murdertime Trio & Reader Coffee Shop AU

Based and inspired very heavily by @hashileio's Cursed Coffee Shop AU, 100% definitely go check out their art, it's hella good!

So our favorite found family team ends up getting stuck. In a relatively peaceful universe but the thing is they can’t get out

Using the void as a shortcut can be tricky like that I guess

They’re tryna figure out how to get out -well, mostly Nightmare is, but still- but in the meanwhile, they’ve gotta sustain themselves here somehow

And they can’t just go around wreaking havoc cuz they kinda need to live here for a bit until they figure out how to get out -don’t spit in the well you drink from and all that

So Nightmare has the great idea of starting a cafe, cuz what better way to feed off negativity than in a customer service environment where people are coming in tired and bedraggled for their life juice? Yes truly a genius idea

Bam, now they’ve got a whole gig going on, with Killer as the cashier, Dust as the barista, and Horror as the baker in the back making pastries and whatnot, and Nightmare’s the bossman keeping things running smoothly and trying hard to find a way out of the whole conundrum in the meanwhile

One teeny problemo though

None of the “employees” are particularly good at their job

Dust hates the whole situation and puts no effort into his “job”, will fall asleep on the job, purposely misspells names, does only the bare minimum for it (probably even less)

Killer is just absolute gremlin mode, does things that scare/unnerve customers for his own amusement, always trying to annoy someone, be that a customer, or the boss, or Dust (most often Dust, if we’re being honest)

And Horror… well actually he’s pretty well behaved, good employee, great baker, its just sometimes he eats the pastries and foods that were meant for customers, but he deserves it tbh

So Nightmare decides with the way things are going (not particularly well), he’s gonna hire somebody else to keep things running smoothly, in spite of…. everything 

That’s where you come in! Tired, short-on-cash, just-quit-from-Walmart-cuz-fuck-that-place, college student

So you walk in upon see the hiring sign and Nightmare takes one look at you and the negativity rolling off you in waves and decides you’re hired

He doesn’t say that immediately though, of course, he takes a cursory glance at your resume, asks a couple questions, and then asks when you can start

So you come in for your first day of work, get the lackluster general rundown from Dust (by order of Nightmare), don’t spare a second glance for Killer cuz believe it or not you’ve seen weirder (fucking Walmart), and get introduced to Horror, who hardly even pays attention to you cuz he’s fully focused on decorating the pastries just so

All things considered, the job’s not that bad especially considering you’ve mastered the retail worker “numb-to-the-world-around-you” skill

On slow days you get to sit still and focus on homework, or just relax a lil. Nightmare aint gonna stop you, not when everyone knows you’re one of the only employees keeping this place in business (besides Horror)

Some days you get scheduled to work instead of Killer, but for whatever reason he hangs around the cafe the entire time anyway. You can’t get away from him and his chaos

Sometimes you’re target practice for his horrible puns and pickup lines. Sometimes you’re actual target practice (non lethal methods of course! nerf gun. Can’t have best employee dying!)

The only repose you get from his chaos is the short half hour when he draws surprisingly intricate art on the chalkboard early in the morning. It’s oddly satisfying to watch him create some beautiful artwork, quietly, like a normal person for once. The effect is ruined a bit when he decides to use the goop coming from his eyes (you never did figure out what that is) as finger paints on the chalkboard

He love love loves pranking you and it's horrible. You try to squirt whipped cream onto a drink and it squirts into your face cuz he somehow managed to jam the thing on purpose. When you turn to glare at him he looks away and pretends to whistle and it looks so very stupid considering he doesn’t have lips to whistle with

Some customer bitches about their order being made wrong (even though they haven’t even touched it), so after dealing with them you go to the back and ask if Horror wants it. You have now unknowingly made a lifelong ally.

You have unlocked: Free Snacks From Horror. You’re starting to like the job much more now.

One rainy day when business is so slow there’s no customers, you decide to start a bet with Dust and Killer to make the most horrendous drink combination that would still work

This is how you found out that Dust has an uncanny ability to make an amazing drink out of most anything

This is also how you found out why Killer was banned from barista privileges even though he makes killer latte art, pun intended

The “bet” kind of shifts more into a “let’s find out something that Dust can’t turn into a crazy good drink”

You never did find it partially cuz you got interrupted by someone coughKillercough causing a fire somehow

That day leads to the three of you featuring some new type of drink on the chalkboard every week cuz how could you not make Dust’s crazy cool ability profitable

You get Horror in on the action as well, and now he makes a "pastry of the week" to match Dust’s drink combo and it’s like a whole thing now

You tried to help Horror out in the back one time when y’all had run out of a certain pastry and Horror was busy decorating some other thing and you figured it shouldn’t be too hard to pull this one pan out of the oven. Horror did warn you to be careful, but… well.

You’re not allowed around the ovens anymore. Killer teases you to this day about getting burned the little shit (you’re not sure you’ll ever forget how quickly all three of them had crowded around you when you had initially shrieked from the pain)

That doesn’t stop you from trying to help out in the back once in a while though

Some days you show up a lil early cuz you wake up at an ungodly hour from having a screwed up sleep schedule, but we don’t talk about that and help Horror prepare all the doughs and creams and fruits and stuff

One time Dust came ambling by to clock in while you were kneading some dough and you were feeling particularly mischievous so you gave him a pat on the back when you greeted him (leaving a floury handprint on his jacket)

You thought he didn’t notice and that’s that, but as he came back through he gave you an uncharacteristically wide grin (which immediately set you on edge) and then he swooshed his hand over the small pile of flour on the table, flinging flour straight into your face

This of course started a flour fight between you two, with Killer joining the fray soon after cuz of course he would. Horror kept trying to dissuade the three of you from starting a war with his ingredients but ultimately he just ended up covered in flour too

The fight only broke up after Nightmare came through, giving you all a death stare. Dust and Killer immediately shifted the blame onto you (traitors)

You were sent to time out which just meant you had to take on the closing shift with Killer (truly a horrible and unjust punishment)

Truthfully though, you’re starting to quite like it here (you’d never say that out loud though, you’d never hear the end of it from Dust, and Killer would probably go out of his way to wreak even more havoc than usual)

she was woken by the sound of her alarm,causing to rub her eyes,and getting up from her comfortable bed,as she look at the  time to see what it was,she realized she was going to late for work,

Reader/y/n-“fuck,fuck,fuck,shit I’m going to be late for work again,ughhh” she says as she runs to the bathroom,take an quick shower,washes her hair,her face and body,then got out of the bathroom,drying herself really quickly,and then she gets dress,hurting herself with the corner of the bed,-“ahhh!shit,ufhh,jezz that shit hurt,oww”,she says while biting her lip,she was done getting dress,she put her shoes,-“should I eat something?nope that will take time��she says to herself,as she runs towards the bathroom,to brush her teeth and do her hair (well trying),her hair was messy and all over the place,as she runs towards the door grabbing her keys and her oversized jacket,and the important things,

She was running towards her work job,passing people,and finally she got to work (she works in coffee shop),she was sweating, “at least I got my exercise for the day”,as she look at her best friend who had her hand tied with work,and with the tons of customers,walking in the back she knew that this was going to be an very much exhausting day.

“So,what do you have for your excuse this time so being late to work,hmm?”-her best friend (let just call her Millie) while she was making the coffee,and the sweet tea,(tbh I was writing what Starbucks employees do😔🤫😭) as she look at her,with an teasing smile,as reader looked at her with playful rolling her eyes,”oh shut it,I just had an extraordinarily long night and woke up late,of study”-she said while finishing up someone coffee,and calling the name of the customer,giving them an fake smile,

“Mhmm,how about you ask your ghost friend to come you to the concert,hmm what was his Name Again,OH YEA it Casper”she says in an serious yet sarcastic tone,as she rolls her eyes,as Millie dramatically gasp at her word,and hold her chest with her hand and place where her heart is,” you wouldn’t dare leave me all ALONE in an concert,uhhhh fine I won’t talk about it” millie says defeating as she crossed her arms,”uh huh,good” she says with an chuckle and look at reader  assignment,and her face down In horror,”wait,wait we had homework for Ms Marine,UGRHH” millie says with an deep sigh,as reader look at her and reader said it ok that she can copy her own work 

Then it was the time to get ready for Miguel O’Hara concert,as reader didn’t really care about being fancy or anything she just got her t-shirt and her comfortable pajama pants and her comfortable hoodie,and wash her face,and waited for Millie to pick her up,as she was scroll on her instagram feed,after 10 minutes later,she see an text message saying “IM HERE BITCH LET FUCKING GOOO AND I BOUGHT THE CAR THAT MY DADY GOT ME!!”,she chuckles,and went through the front the door and got her key, her phone,and her wallet,and walked out the door and took the stairs down to Mille car,seeing she that she looked beautiful as always,as she opens the passenger door and sat inside to hear Mille speak “IM SOOO READY TO SEE HIM,OMFG What IF HE SMILE AT ME!but I’m not that delusional!” Mille says happily and smiling,as she drove to the concert,as reader laughed at her stuipdness,she can’t help but smile as well,at seeing her best friend being so happy

Trying to find an Dawn parking spot was  the hardest  getting inside was an absolute mission,with people coming in and out,but we got there,and Millie got to the one of the front row’s,and Millie wouldn’t stop talking about Miguel ohara,or the other members and then after 35 minutes of waiting for the concert to start,the spider Band (MOST creative name ever 😔😌✊)

Lyla:”HELLO Ladies and Gentlemannnnnnn,WHO IS READY FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR LIFETIME!!!! SAYYY hello to THE SEXIEST Band ever!! THE SPIDER’S!!!”lyla says happily,while holding the mic,she was smiling with such an adorable face,and her walk toward the stage was smooth,she was wearing an white colored suit with flowing yellow floral laced layer  that was strap to her waist of her suit,moving with her body,as she was infront of the stage,she put her hand in the air and positioned her finger in an gun position,and speaker into the mic 

“LET MAKE THIS ONE OF AN HELL OF AN NIGHT!!”lyla says with an smirk and  then she stomped on the floor then the whole stadium goes dark,Millie who was shaking reader the whole time and screaming like the other people around them,reader who thought she would loss her hearing,as she watched Millie screaming from the top of her lung,as she looked at the stage to see the crowd quiet down,as now the band was now there pairs such colorful clothes and designs,as the crowd gets loud as hell,with all of them saying “THE SPIDER BAND!!”,As reader see the light on Lyla and this guy with an sort of punk rock designed with such cool looking pants,and he was wearing makeup,an neon red and green stripes on his face only in the corner of her eyes,as he tap something on his ear,and speak to the crowd “let’m Rock and roll,BABY!!”hobie says with an playful voice,as he played his guitar,then the other band members,including Gwen,miles,Miguel,pavitr,Lyla,Margo,and Jessica (those are the people who are on stage,the other members who are peter b Parker,Ben Riley,Miles.G/Miles42 are in the back stage)

AFTER the concert was finished,everyone was leaving and so did she and Millie did,but after finding which car is her and where is it they found it,”come on,I can drive you home,it already late”Millie said gently to reader,as reader”im fine,Millie,it only an few blocks away from here,anyway you need to get some sleep,so you could copy my homework” she says with an calmly voice,but in an tone that Millie knows that no matter what she does she won’t get in,

”fine,I see you later,you better not get kidnapped,cuz I’m going to find who tf dare touch my nerdy friend”Millie says as she get inside the and starts to drive away waving goodbye to reader,

as reader starts to walk away from the stadium that was host inside of the concert,fixing her glasses and she was enjoying her late night walk alone,as she looks up at the moon light,putting her hands in her pjs pants,she was humming to her favorite song,after walking halfway away from the stadium,she hears an crowd of people coming here,their feet steps were coming to were she was,as she was still walking,she and someone bumped into her,as she just stumble an little bit,as she look behind as she see Miguel O’Hara standing there,

as she rolls her eyes,mumbling “ay great now im here with mr hot stuff” she says in an whisper voice she thought that she could only hear,but Miguel heard her,and said “I’m sorry, wait,esperar por favor,can you please hide me from those culo loco fans” he said in an annoyed,yet desperate voice,as he face showing his annoyance,as they could hear the group of people coming towards them,as she waits an little bit,and look at his face,and pushes her glasses,and sighs softly, “fine,I’ll help but when those people leave im leaving”she says with an scuff and take off her hoodie and handed to him,he looks at it and then get more annoyed at her “what now you want me to write an autograph on your hoodie,ah Que maravilloso” he said sarcastically,as he rolls his eyes out,and mumbles some words,reader who looks at him like he was slow, “no dumbass,I’m sorry if you can’t use your popstar brain,to figure out I’m telling you to wear it” she says in an harsh yet sarcastic voice,as she rolls her eye at him,and gave him an fake smile,as Miguel looked at her glasses,and then grab the hoodie and put it on him,she just didn’t care enough about his attitude at the moment and the only thing she cared was going home and not being bothered,”Now what,pequeña señorita”Miguel says in an stern voice,as the footsteps we’re getting louder,”now switch glasses,so it can be believeable,and ruffled your hair mr ohara,and start walking”as he did it and walked forward,as the group of people were the same street as them,and were asking where is Miguel or he couldn’t have gone that far from here,or that maybe one of the members got him,but in the end they left,as reader and Miguel were walking,and heard that they left,reader trip on an someone wallet,”are you seriously that blind without your glasses”Miguel says in his stern voice but his serious act was breaking up ,and chuckles at reader tripping over, “oh shut it mr bad boy wannabe,just give me my glasses and hoodie back and I’m be on my way” she say with an attitude,as she get up from the floor,and try to find where Miguel is,as she feel someone hand on her face taking off the sunglasses,and then put her circles glasses on her face,”there” he says to her,with an serious face,and he takes off the hoodie as well,giving it to her,”thanks” he says to her and walks the other way,”yea,hope…to never see you again” she say calmly and walked her way home,and when she finally got home with no problem,she didn’t care about shower,she was too tired to do anything but sleep on her bed.Meanwhile Miguel was at gas station,he needed to get away from his famous life and just chill,he needed to get away from those annoying flashing lights always on his face or his crew members faces,as he was sitting down by the side of an road eating an snack,as he watched the moon,as he recalled what that girl said “mr bad boy wannabe”as he scoffed at her comment,and rolled his eyes,”what an werid rude girl” as he got up,to only hear the sound of his phone,as he looked it was Lyla saying to come here,so they can go to the hotel,as he call an anyone to pick him up.

@paz-45 asked so here are my 5 ee tattoos lmao (warning for me just rambling absolute shit under the cut)

my first ever tattoo - jon's handwriting and a wild wave because i love violent sun so much. looking back the handwriting tattoo isn't something i'd do today but it's what got me started on getting tats at all and i had a very positive experience (both w getting it and w asking jon for the writing lmao)

the teeth are not related, for the record. writing is about 6 months healed in this pic and almost 18 months healed now. also i know no one asked but since i love talking about tattoos - this is on the outside of my forearm and the pain was about a 3/10. super easy placement if you want somewhere to put a first tattoo that won't kill you off immediately.

classic lil gth hand. i always forget i have this because it's on the back of my arm (hence the bad photo too, say hello to my ear) but i do rlly love it, my artist did a very good job. it's about 5 months healed in this pic and just under 18 months healed now. this is on the back of my upper arm, the pain was probably a 4/10. a little spicy towards the inside but nowhere near the worst, certainly less painful than the inside of the bicep for instance. i also never find colour that bad (lines are worse imo) but i know some people do, so i guess if you came to this post looking for genuine tattoo advice, take that into consideration

these eyes are, technically, ee related - and please excuse this horrible photo, they're really hard to get a pic of! but me and my artist designed them together based on put me together's bridge - 'is it the darkest night/or is that dawn in your eyes?' it's a very important song to me and i love these tattoos, especially the dawn one with all the little details. it actually looks a little better now it's healed, it's settled into itself a lot more. they're super fresh in this pic (less than a month each, i got them within about a week of each other) and about a year healed now

pain wise this is a rough placement. the bottom one especially was one of my most painful tattoos - probably an 8/10. it proved i could never tattoo my actual knee because i genuinely had a terrible time of it. though weirdly the top one was really easy, probably a 6/10

i find this one incredibly hard to photograph bc of the way it wraps but my favourite line from final form (i stole the idea from someone in atb but it's one of my favourite sentiments, as in, this is my first body so i will make mistakes, and it is my last body so i will look after it). i broke one of my only tattoo rules for this too, which was No Words. i doubt i'll get any more words after this bc i don't think they'd really fit very well w the rest of mine, but i thought this was a really nice way to cuff my patchwork arm.

it's about 6 months healed in this video (from today). pain was probably another 8/10, wrist is a very spicy placement but not the worst one by any stretch. the outside (first body) was easier than the inside (last body) and it was definitely tolerable, tbh it was almost more annoying to heal than it was to get

i do have plans for more ee related tattoos (i want to get one from each album, so i have arc and rdf left to conquer) but atm i can't get anything because i have serious trust issies w new tattooists (and i love my artists who i know already) and my shop is currently 200 miles away. i'll probably get one in summertime if i have the money. i really like that for the most part they're not super obvious what they are, even the hand isn't bam in your face this is album artwork unless you're in the know. no hate to those kind of tattoos (ive seen some sick tattoos of the whole gth cover or at least the entire guy) it's just not my kind of thing, i like to be mysterious.

sorry for talking so much, but getting tattoos is my only personality trait. i could and would literally speak about it all day. consider this your formal piece of danny's tattoo advice. none of these are my most painful placements and none were my most painful tattoos, but everybody is different so if you genuinely do want this advice, take it with a grain of salt. and if anyone wants more of my advice/further tattoo tours, feel free to ask (idk why you'd want advice from me but i have probably about 40 tattoos at this point and i want to talk about it. because i'm boring and inufferable. i'm A Tattoo Person. this is my coming out </3)

999 words of pigslop about a bad boss being mean to comet buckminster, a heart attack, and a ship crash for @flashfictionfridayofficial. i miss fttc and i wish i had the spark to write something more full-form for it tbh.

The sirens won’t stop sounding off. One more misstep and she’ll crash The Tiverton. One more shrill moment and she’ll puke. 

Comet can think of a thousand things she could have done better— least of all paying attention. She tosses the book onto the seat and takes up the controls, trying to steer away from here. All the chiding in the world won’t fix this; she does it anyway. If only Comet Buckminster knew how to stop talking, stop getting absorbed in her work, and pay attention. If only she knew how to pull herself out of this mess before— 

The cockpit door slams open; Comet’s shoulders tense; and the voice of Captain Gerda McKinley comes shattering out over the screaming alarm and her descending shadow. “The hell is this? I was sleeping, fuckwit.” 

“I— I’m sorry, Captain. Something malfunctioned— We were traveling at faster-than-light, like you said to— And then we tried to jump out to Albyltian Five, like you said, but it chimmied up and now we’re here— I think we got clipped by a piece of debris, or something from that last skirmish didn’t get repaired correctly—”

“You mean you didn’t repair it correctly?” She steps into the cockpit, barely big enough for the two of them, towering over Comet. “When you repaired it back on Evis?” 

“I did what I could,” she squeaks. 

“Evis is a nothing planet. And you’re a nothing mechanic.” 

“I’m a medic.” It comes out just as soft. It isn’t often that she feels her size— small, skitterish, nothing— but she has felt it more and more often over the past month and a half of work here. Dr. Hadzic never made her feel this way, and he was six-foot-five and half as wide. Blitzen never makes her feel this way, and he’s her big brother. Captain McKinley is full of the horrible truth— so why shouldn’t she crowd in and use that as a threat? Why shouldn’t she use what’s at her disposal? Why shouldn’t she use fear to halt an ever-moving tongue?

“I hired you as a one-stop shop. So do I need to repeat myself? Wasn’t fixing the hull your job? Do I need to dock your pay?” 

“We can try something else,” Comet stammers, palms itching over the controls. She leans into the glass and peers out the window. Forward, she decides. Forward toward the planet in the distance; toward the ribbons of some sort of dust in the place beyond; toward stars blinking like streetlamps lining the street.  “If I can get this ship back on course, then we can land on that moon, there— it’s abandoned, but it’ll work— and then I can fix any damage to the Tiverton and to the FTL drive that I might have missed—”  

“You’re running out of opportunities to say things I want to hear.” 

“We’re running out of opportunities for me to fix this.” 

“I have an idea.” Captain McKinley muscles her way into the spot Comet’s trying to occupy, handling the controls with more grace than her shoulders would imply she possesses. A bit of sweat transfers when her shoulder hits Comet; and when Comet’s shoulder hits the wall.

Captain McKinley doesn’t announce her moves. It’s unnecessary. She was always going to stop on that abandoned moon; she was always going to slam the nose of the ship into the soft, gray dust covering its ground; and she was always going to, in the aftershocks landing, whip around to glare at Comet with nostrils flaring. 

“You are going to fix this,” she seethes. “I’m going back to sleep. I’m tired as hell, all your ship-jostling made my chest hurt, and looking at you makes me want to puke.” 

Narrowing her eyes just slightly, Comet considers that while scampering to gather her tools and breathing apparatus. “Is your chest tight?” 

“Stop asking me stupid questions.” 

“It’s an important question. Captain McKinley, if your chest is uncomfortable and you feel—”

The captain stalks off without indulging her, covertly rubbing at parts of her middle-back. “Just fix the drive. I want off this moon by the time I’m awake.”

Fine, Comet decides. Ignore the signs of what’s happening. Ignore what you did wrong. Shitass fucking captain. She should just hijack the ship and leave. 

She’s not going to do that. 

With tubes pumping oxygen to a mask over her nose and mouth, body covered by protective layers of cooling garments, insulation, and synthetic polymers, and her face covered by a gold-coated plexiglass visor, she looks out at the universe beyond her. It’s so beautiful and still from here. Why would she rob herself of its enchantment by working for a woman like Gerda for a moment longer? The stark stillness of this abandoned moon? The stars she has learned to love and navigate beyond it? The very principles of science that govern it? 

Fuck this. She’ll go work for Blitzen before she works for this woman again. Being self-sufficient isn’t worth this. 

Fixing the FTL drive is easy enough. She tinkered with so many of those for extra cash as a side hustle during her medical training that it’s like second nature to her. Fixing the hull is easier, even if her fingers are less dextrous with the spacewalk suit’s gloves over them. 

The easier part is walking into The Tiverton and finding it quiet. Finding it halcyon. 

There’s a reason for that, she finds, as she heads to the captain’s quarters (so much more resplendent than her own). The captain is still; breathless; and, when Comet raises her wrist to check, without a pulse. 

She chuckles once, harsh and short. Maybe Captain McKinley shouldn’t have ignored that heart attack. 

Fine, Comet decides, trying not to grin. There is an experiment she has wanted to try. Reconstituting a body? Bringing the dead back to life? How shall she do it, she wonders? 

Must she know right now? She has all the time in the galaxy and nobody to report to.

1) The Last book I read:

Foster by Claire Keegan, which is what the movie An Cailín Ciúin was based on. It's only 70 pages (though I listened to the audio, which has a stunning narration) and I think I am in love with Claire Keegan maybe.

The last australian book I read was Witchy (vol 1+2) by Ariel Ries. Really fun comic about young witch Nyneve who is conscripted into the Witch Guards, runs away, and has to figure out her place in the world. Beautiful art!!

2) A book I recommend:

This year I finally read A Safe Girl to Love by Casey Plett, which is a collection of short stories about trans women living in Canada/the US. Every story felt so lived in and alive. It is mostly real-life stuff but there is one story where a woman can speak with her cat and it's done so well. Semi-related stories in that some of the characters know each other/mention each other. A trans classic!!!

3) A book that I couldn’t put down:

Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton. Set in Aotearoa, centred around these two young women who run a guerilla gardening collective. one of them meets a billionaire who wants to give them a bunch of money. Now see the blurb told me it was an eco thriller but the thriller part is very slow burn until ur like JAYSUS SLOW DOWN.

4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):

I re-read the Southern Reach trilogy (Annihilation, Authority & Acceptance) by Jeff VanderMeer at the end of last yr because he accounced the fourth book. I just love them. The kind of spec fic I would love to write tbh.

5) A book on my TBR:

Praiseworthy by Alexis Wright. I bought it because I knew i was quitting my job and I wanted the staff discount and I thought I'd read it in my unemployment phase. Turns out quitting your job because you're horribly treated means that u enter a big extra-depressed phase so I did not have the brain space to read more than the first 25 pages. But i loved those, they just required more energy than I had. I'm gonna paste the blurb here actually because it just sounds fucken rad:

Praiseworthy is an epic set in the north of Australia, told with the richness of language and scale of imagery for which Alexis Wright has become renowned. A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske. I just simply do not care about rich English people. I had about an hour left of the audiobook, I rly tried to push thru but I just couldn't care enough.

8) A favorite book from childhood:

I did love Enid Blyton's Faraway Tree series which look I'm sure u can tell about me if you know me. And look I still do but my god. The amount of parents and parents buying these for their children at the shop for the love of god get them at the op shop PLEASE.

9) A book you would give to a friend:

Vague ............ well it would be something aus.

10) A book of poetry or lyrics that you own

The last one I bought was Non-Essential Work by Omar Sakr. I think Omar is one of the best writers working today in this godforsaken colony. HIs work is just exquisite and so precise.

11) A nonfiction book you own:

The last one I bought was Orientalism by Edward Said which made me realise how if you don't read anything academic in ten+ years it's very hard to get back into reading (or again, perhaps it is the horrible mental illnesses attacking my brain which mean I find it extremely hard to concentrate on anything!!! wahoo!!!!) so I am taking that one slow.

12) What are you currently reading:

Ghost Cities by Siang Lu which comes out in May. It's very funny and absurd and written just the way I like. It's about a dude who lives in Sydney and works as a Chinese translator, but he actually speaks no Chinese and uses google translate to do his job. He's fired via elaborate prank and then somehow gets the attention of a famous movie director, and is currently being whisked away to one of the ghost city apartment complexes in China to make a movie with him. There's a parallel story about an ancient emperor and I just finished the 30-page poem that his newly-imprisoned eunichs composed. It's exciting!!

13) What are you planning on reading next?

The Orphancorp trilogy (dystopian aus YA) by Marlee Jane Ward, which I have already read and simply adore. Three novellas that imo have perfect pacing and are about "what if capitalism was extra bad". They are deeply queer and anti-capitalist.

Hey Abby! Sorry to bother you, but I honestly view you as a big sister presence and I don’t really have anyone to ask about this, and I’m kind of freaking out haha. So I’m going to be graduating from college soon, and I’m really excited to be done with school (unless I go to grad school in the future). However, all the Real Adults in my life are always telling me that being out of school and having to live in the real world is infinitely harder than anything school has ever thrown at me. I’m honestly completely terrified. So I guess I’m just quickly wondering if you find this to be the case (that actual adulthood is way worse than college)? And if you have any tips for how to adjust and how to live? I’ve never not been in school for my whole 22 years of life, yknow? I can’t even fathom what it’s like to not be in school, and it’s scary as hell. You totally don’t have to respond to this if you don’t feel like it or if it’s too personal or anything! Thank you so much anyway. You are truly such a special and valued presence here and I hope you’re doing well 💛

hi sweet pea this is so sweet and you sound like a dear <33 kind of messed up for the real adults in your life to winkingly be pessimistic about leaving school tbh!! here's the thing, even in the last six years since i graduated (yoinks) life is so different....... but honestly i don't think "living in the real world" is harder than school - i don't think i really had full awareness of myself until i left and got a little older, and i don't have any nostalgia towards those years at all tbh. if anything, college was brutal.

leaving is a transition for sure, it's one of the biggest life changes you'll have experienced up to this point and requires different strengths and skills, but it's just like any other change. scary for sure, jarring absolutely, oftentimes impossible and irritating and depressing and horrible but like. that's life baby!!!! and that was also school! there's no wall between college and Real Life where suddenly you're stranded on the other side and everything is unfamiliar to you and you won't be able to handle it.

job interviews feel like tests and require some of the same skills, finding a place to live is like trying to make a home out of a cinderblock dorm, shopping for food and feeding yourself is just as much a sisyphean task, you still find things to look forward to every week and to give your days structure, it's just now up to you to decide what that structure looks like. being alive is sometimes a hard task, but that's true of everyone no matter if you have the familiar safety net of school, or if you're grown. the real secret is that most of us still feel like kids faking our way through the day-to-day, and what is important is knowing that you'll get through it, and the biggest transformation is how many choices you have. you'll have panicky moments in the beginning but you'll rely on your loved ones and you'll find big and small joys you never dreamed of in school, and suddenly you've made a life for yourself that feels familiar and warm (or exhilarating and exciting, if that's your chosen speed!).

tldr...... i think sometimes adults forget how scary and hard life can feel even as a teenager and a student, and the amazing wonderful magical thing about breaking out on your own is that every experience you have, whether it's difficult or a breeze, will prepare you for the next one. you will develop the skills and relationships you need to keep going, and that's it! there's no answer you need to get right, there's no monster you need to beat, you just get to wake up every day and build the tapestry of your life. transitions are scary but you'll always have support even if it's just me being your internet big sister. the real world won't always feel like a mystery to you, soon it'll just be the place you get to call home, the place where your loved ones live, the place where you can make a difference and forge a path and build something for yourself, as big or as small as you want, with whatever time you have.

Oh boy do I have thoughts and feelings about this.

When I was a kid - not that long ago, mind you - my family moved across the country. The move was hard on me, but even so I've always felt like I carried more resentment towards the move than was warranted. I only just the other day realized why I still feel so angry about it.

The neighborhood I moved from was a kid's version of a walkable urban paradise. Within (safe!) walking distance of me were all my friends, a large park, the high school + community pool, my family's church, the ice cream shop and Blockbuster (video rentals) - everything I could want at that age.

By the time my family moved, despite still being very much a child, I had quite a bit of independence. I wandered the neighborhood with my friends. My brother and I went to swim lessons on our razor scooters. Gangs of like 10yo's would wander around the park.

And I anticipated growing more independent. My older brothers got little local jobs at 14 and had their own money. With a bike and a bit of cash in their wallet, they were free to do (in my eyes) whatever they wanted.

This was the early 2000s.

The neighborhood we moved to was a suburban hell. Houses and lots were much bigger, and there was nobody my age and nothing around. Our development was in the middle of like a forest, but not the fun kind you could explore. Roads surrounding the development had no sidewalks and the nearest Thing was a 15 minute drive at least. Suddenly all this independence I was used to and anticipating for my life was cut short. I was completely dependent on my parents. I couldn't even legally get a learner's permit until 16 there, and even if I'd had a licence, where would I go and in what car?

So yeah. You used to be able to go outside and be your own person from an early age. You got independence and practice making your own decisions and taking care of yourself. You had fun stuff to do outside the house and you were allowed (by your parents and by the environment itself) to go somewhere and just hang out. I'm not saying this in a "kids these days" way, I'm saying this in an "adults have screwed us all over with their horrible urban planning and destruction of third spaces etc" way. It's nice being able to go hang out outside. I wish you had that. I wish I had that even still.

I'm idealizing it a bit, but tbh I really value that part of my childhood. I wish every kid - every person actually - had that kind of freedom.

I think little kids are SO funny so I thought it would be fun if Rory was just like "I literally don't even care what you do I am watching Toy Story" It's so funny to me because I've literally had this part written for forever so it doesn't seem like a big deal to me that it's a proposal because in my head/drafts they've been engaged since the end of the main storyline. I haven't thought much about their wedding though tbh but I am toying a lot with Rory's roll. I think it will be fun!

Hey thanks for answering my questions - I'm so sorry you ended up in urgent care. Pretty sure same would happen to me. My situation is I just live at home with my dad in a shit hole, mom's dead. Older brother moved out few years ago but he's in precarious position. My dad wants me to wait on him hand and foot, and says outright I can't leave or have any kind of life. He needs me to basically do all the work in the house. He also hits me and verbally abuses me all the time. People we know are aware of situation and are sympathetic but are too frightened of him to challenge him. Strangers will tell him it's not right now he speaks to me out in public and I pay for it later. These people I never see again but they're right. He's just lazy violent pos and cos I have no money or job I'm stuck. He thinks I'm too frightened to tell on him to police or go for help. He doesn't know I'm making plans tho. DV shelters or assistance like that won't help with out a police report. I go to police might as well measure me out for my coffin. I have no real friends. Housing won't help because if I leave home for apparently no good reason I will be classed as wilfully making myself homeless. I cant work to save up cos my dad fucked up my last job and gets violent if I even mention looking for one.

I'm basically a prisoner. My brother lives far away and dad doesn't know where he is cos he cut him off. Cos my dad thinks I'm too frightened to disobey him for real even he is paranoid about the possibility (fr hes batshit crazy) and is ignorant about internet computer stuff I am in touch with my brother. But I can't stay with him for long cos of his landlord finding out. I thought I could just pack and walk out and crash at my bro's. I also thought I'd figure out stuff when I was there. But my gear is like my art stuff , computer, clothes, personal belongings self care stuff plushes and family bits and pieces. I don't know how I'd get them out the house with out my dad noticing. Even if I could do it a little at a time I would have nowhere to put them for storage cos don't have anyone but my bro and he's too far away to keep going back and forth to collect it safely.

I read all your advice and it's made me rethink all that because I am woefully unprepared. I think I'm gonna have to just pack my backpack with basic necessities and just go. I have to arrange a time with my bro and he said he'd pick me up away from the house. The only time I can get out of the house is when I have to do the shopping. My dad is home all day (he gets disability) so it wouldn't be weird for me to go out with my backpack as usual long as it's not bulging. I'd just say I'm going to get his food and then fuck off and meet my brother.

Literally I cannot delay any longer. It's reaching crisis point. I know I should plan it out further in advance for the future since I can't stay at brother's but I might not get this chance again. My brother seems to be getting cold feet tbh. I just am gonna pack bare essentials take grocery money and go. I am desperate teddy. I try and sneak out door it's not gonna work I see that now. If it helps at all... I didn't have, & still have yet to land, a job too - it was still possible because I had people willing to open up their home to me, to help me w/ transport costs, & everything. Asking for help even like, as a general ask to an online crowd, can be terrifying for so many reasons but it can truly change so much. Beyond that, depending on where you live, at least some places have state/gov-maintained jobseeker's resources that can make things So Much Easier to access information & even training. I'd recommend looking into if your area has anything like that!!

That's what I thought too, I know it may differ based on location, but where I landed it ended up being a myth used to discourage victims from leaving or seeking help. Not all organizations require you to file a police report, or even disclose to them who your abuser was, in order for them to help you. If you haven't already looked into the individual orgs' policies, I would really recommend doing that too, because if that is the same for wherever you are, it could be life-changing

That is a terrible terrible policy & whoever came up with it, I hope they get back every last bit of suffering they've enabled tenfold. I hope with all my heart there is a way around that. If you're comfortable, I am always open to look into things on your behalf, if you message me here whenever I have free time I would be glad to try & find stuff - sometimes places won't even tell you upfront on their websites & you have to call, which is ridiculous, so often calling isn't even safe.

I'm glad you're able to keep in touch with your brother safely.. thank goodness your pos dad is ignorant. I'm sorry, I know how hard it is to give up sentimental things, heirlooms, art, plushes - all of those are so meaningful & precious, & especially where a hobby is your lifeline in a situation feeling like having to give it up to get out is hellish. If there's anything small enough, I managed to take some sentimental things by shoving them into my clothes, in between necessities too. It wasn't enough to make the loss all better, but it took some of the sting away

If you leave your computer, I'd recommend doing what I did if you can - take out the storage drive at the last second, & take it with you, so that he can't access the info on there!! It was a vital part of my plans before I left, & it meant I was safer. Granted my family is also at least somewhat okay using computers, so it's a bit different. But only if you can get it apart quietly, safely enough, of course

All of this looking into resources could be done after you're out, too. I get the urgency. If you don't have wifi at your brother's, I'd recommend going to the nearest library to his place - they have So Much. It's been one of the Most helpful places to me since leaving

…Undertale AU about Burgerpants noticing that the weird kid with the dusty knife was right, that it really is all empty; so despite all odds (probably because his cigarettes ran out) he makes the decision to leave his place at MTT‘s- only to find out that Death didn’t bother with him.

Cue a "finding yourself and the meaning of it all“-type story about Burgerpants wandering the dead (and glitched) Underground, seeing the emptiness left behind and occasionally coming across the few other survivors coping in their own way with what happened, all while trying to figure out his own place in this horrible version of the freedom he longed for

i love christmas and, as well as creating a bit of something, i love seeing other ppl partake in changing their avatars/ headers and themes here on tumblr, some are quite inspirational and nice to admire~ also the decorations from the city is a real treat! it truly brings out the feelings of joy from the holiday season🎄

i enjoy traveling and i would love to go overseas to see both europe and asia~ portugal as well as spain and italy always peaked my interests! it would be so cool to meet others from tumblr that would be a dream!! 🤩 as of now, i made plans to visit japan after new years since they had recently opened their borders and i couldn't be more excited! it will be a first and the number one place i wish to go 🤭

It's definitely "Beat the Devil." TBH, they both rely on stupid plots WRT creatures. (A witch knocking Satan out with rosemary and salt? Really? And since when do vampires and werewolves not experience conflicting motivations? I really want to make all the writers sit down and re-watch "Bloodlust" and "Heart.") They both also have their moments.

In theory, neither episode's best scenes qualify as high art. Their plots suck, but then, is anyone really watching Dabb-era SPN for the plot? Their plots are, at heart, setups for Sam Winchester trauma porn. Jared, as usual, does a fine job with that, and even has good chemistry with Jensen and with the minor/supporting players, like Alex and Sam Smith.

The startling, borderline-genius tiebreaker comes from the behind-the-scenes crew. I cannot with the oversaturation and weird orange lighting in "SIASL"'s indoor scenes. It's worse than usual, because we can't explain it away as a weird, 1950s-bunker-lightbulb thing; no, it's in a modern BBQ shop, too. I find it distracting, which is a shame, since I otherwise enjoy Kip's flirtations and babble about the "Crowley deal." Even if the episode's execution isn't start-to-finish horrible, it isn't worth recommending over your average 42-minute television show.

However, Phil Sgriccia's direction elevates "Beat the Devil" far above what it might otherwise have been. Sam's resurrection, his shrinking from Lucifer, the mystery of what lies beyond his flashlight's beam-- it's all just the right combination of gorgeousness and grotesquerie, distance and entrapment, clarity and obfuscation. My hat's off to Serge Ladouceur as well as Sgriccia; for all the ugly later-season eps he turned in, he never failed to meet the best directors at their level.

I wish he'd gotten more opportunities to do that, but, well. We could all use more masterpieces from all kinds of artists. And, make no mistake, the lighting and camera work in "Beat the Devil" are art. Aesthetically speaking, "SIASL" doesn't even belong in the same league, let alone the same 1-on-1 matchup.

Chuck: Starting off Season 14 we have Stranger in a Strange Land - Dean is possessed by Michael and missing for weeks! Sam has grown a grief beard and has been searching for his brother non stop! Also organizing the AU hunters and tending to Nick, who is somehow still alive and recovering from his Lucifer possession. Meanwhile, some rando demon wants to be the new King Of Hell and wants Sam's approval. Sam wants no part of it and tells all the demons that there will be no new King of Hell and anyone who tries it, has to get through him! 😳🤤
