10 Fandoms, 10 Characters, 10 Tags
Ok, after agonizing over these choices for days, I'm just posting lest I overthink it any further.
Thank you for the tag @robo-dino-puppy! I hope I do this right. I'm also not very good at ranking things, so this is mostly in the order the character comes to mind. Also, I am not sure I can come up with ten fandoms I'm involved in, so a few may just be me reaching for something to list.
Horizon Forbidden West - Ikkotah

Was there any surprise he would be on my list somewhere? There should not have been. There is literally nothing special or compelling about him, he is just a heartbroken guy who stole my heart.
Stargate SG-1 - Teal'c

Teal'c was an awesome character, and I will forever defend his sense of humor. He made so many jokes that were intended to fall flat, but I could never help but laugh at them, even while the SG team gave him sad/confused looks.
Star Wars: Rebels - Zeb

I'm stealing this from @robo-dino-puppy, but it can't be helped. Zeb is the best. He is such a great character, and has such a tragic backstory and compelling story in the show. He was so underutilized and his live action model was incredible. They need to get him in the Ahsoka show! (And let him have Kallus back too!)
M*A*S*H - Charles Emerson Winchester, III

I loved Charles in MASH. He was such an arrogant guy, but he was also very competent, intelligent, and would help so many people without question, because it was his duty as a doctor. He had a very soft side too that was just wonderful to see come out here and there.
The X-Files - Dana Scully

Scully was so awesome. She was very rarely a damsel in distress, she was so damn smart, her sarcasm and wit were what I dreamed I could also have someday.
Sailor Moon - Sailor Uranus/Haruka Tenoh
I thought Sailor Uranus was the coolest. The first canonically gay character I encountered, and I was a vocal angry fan about what the dub did to her and Neptune. As an early teen, Sailor Uranus was everything I thought women needed to be. Awesome, buff, no-nonsense, no men.
The Lord of the Rings - Eowyn

I wanted to dislike her so much when the Two Towers came out, because she seemed so extraneous and convinced of her own importance to the plot, but she wiped the floor with my expectations and I fell in love. She was just so awesome. Then I was disappointed she got together with Faramir, because she shouldn't need a dude, but I loved Faramir as well, so I accepted the match. (Yes, I was one of those people who saw the movies before reading the books...)
The Legend of Korra - Asami Sato

Smart, capable, and compassionate. Asami was one of my favorites from go, even though the narrative pitted her against Korra for the Mako love triangle thing at first. She pulled her weight within the group, and I loved how resourceful she was.
Animorphs - Marco

Marco was so lovable as far as I was concerned. He was that oddball guy who hid all his pain and neglect under a front. He was very relatable when I was reading those books, and I was so invested in his story.
Gargoyles - Brooklyn

I liked Brooklyn a lot when Gargoyles was on. He had his act together most of the time, and I liked his overall character. I like that he wanted to do right by his family/friends, but wasn't serious all the time.
I haven't thought about some of these characters in a very long time, but I liked revisiting some of my favorites. This was fun!

Marvel-ous Mondays... but it's Sunday
I was always, and mostly proudly, a nerd.
My parents had a set of orange student encyclopedias downstairs and they convinced me to do "reports" for fun. I played that Microsoft Encarta Trivia game as well as various incantations of Where in the ?? is Carmen Sandiego and even a math game known as Number Maze for an inordinate percentage of my childhood. I read books and maintained collections and had a microscope I insisted on for Christmas that I didn't know how to use.
But I didn't read comics.
I don't know why exactly. I went to bookstores, I even used to buy baseball cards at the local video game rental place, but I don't even remember SEEING comic books in real life. I also didn't watch X-men Evolution or any of the other great Marvel animation my friends remember. Probably my mom didn't like them for one reason or another, or they may have been on when I was out practicing for various sports. Regardless, I didn't have the usual indoctrination into comicbook universes that my fellow youthful nerds had.
The only small window of Marvel that opened for me pre-teen years was that my neighbor, a boy named Jon, collected X-men cards. And he would want to play X-men with myself and our other friend, Kari. He didn't have very many girl cards (another factor that may have limited my interest) so I was always Storm. (I don't remember who Kari agreed to be.)
These days, awesome as Storm is, I'd opt to be Jean Grey.
Regardless, my nerdy youth did not sense any lack and I continued into nerdy teenagehood unaware of the cinematic superhero renaissance on the horizon. The first of the X-men trilogy with Sir Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier (and of course, the then barely known amazing Australian, Hugh Jackman, as Wolverine) came out but it didn't garner my interest. I think my friends and I may have even watched it on a movie night (I grew up in a small town- trips to the movie theater 30 minutes away by car were rare and magical and reserved for something you assumed would be awesome... or a birthday), but my mind was probably on something or someone else.
It wasn't until the second movie, where Shawn Ashmore (who I adored from the much too short Animorphs series- yes I loved the books too) had a larger role that my interest was piqued. Genetic evolution as an explanation for powers? Fascinating. Found family for those who were either rejected or who just needed something their family couldn't give? Awesome. Being ashamed of being extraordinary in a world demanding conformity and ordinariness? Hell yes, sign me up.
One thing I will say for me is once I'm in, I'm in. I was now committed to X-men and all future movies and I would appreciate them no matter the reviews or the complaints of how it did or didn't match the comics. Which I still hadn't read.
But I had not expanded to Marvel at large. I watched at least one of the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies and liked it well enough, but it didn't grab me. It also seemed like superhero movies were all so male-dominated (except X-men, where it at least had smacked of a 30-70 split), so it didn't feel like it was FOR me.
Then Batman Begins came out.
Sit down geeky gatekeeper boy. I see you- yeah, I know you are about to "school" me about how that's DC and you've been talking about Marvel. I'm well aware of the difference- this post is about HOW I got INTO superhero movies (and leading up specifically to the MCU). And Batman was a part of that process, even if he is DC, mainly because Christopher Nolan's trilogy is fucking phenomenol.
Batman Begins, even more than X-men, sucked me into the superhero universe. The world it created felt real and therefore accessible to someone like me who hadn't experienced years of indoctrination into a universe littered with superheroes. I understood trauma and darkness and people doing bad things and the desire to stand up to all of that but not having any idea how to do battle with the world's demons at the same time you were fighting your own. I understood Bruce Wayne in all that and the film was just fucking good, regardless of previous interest. (Add in that my best friend in college was getting into film in general so I was watching A LOT of movies and ended up more interest in their storytelling than my friend in the long run.)
So superhero movies were now on my list of acceptable movies to spend money on at the theater. I also was now in college with a little bit of dispensable income and a movie theater within 10 minutes and/or friends at home that were down for a whole day out that ended with a late night at the drive-in. The latter of which is exactly where I first watched Iron Man, a movie about a superhero I didn't even know existed (I know, right?) with an actor I associated with Sherlock Holmes.
And into the MCU I dove.
I've unapologetically loved this universe ever since. I've read some of the comics now, and I've enjoyed them, but honestly my love remains with the movies and shows that are part of this canon. A love that only grew over the years and that still finds magic in the new directions the universe is taking.
But like most, I've missed things. There were movies I didn't and haven't seen, shows I didn't keep up with, and so on. So I'm doing this blog as sort of a "fun" resolution. I want to watch through the ENTIRE MCU- all the shows and movies (whether they are considered "canon" or not- like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). I've tried several times before but haven't done it.
So this year I've committed to Marvel-ous Mondays. Every Monday I will watch (or at least start) a Marvel Movie or 2 episodes of a Marvel show. I'm going in release order. (I was originally going to do Chronological order but all the timey-wimey ness (Gatekeeper boy I swear to Gaia I will have you forcibly removed, you know damn well David Tenet was in both universes and would approve that use) has made that order really complicated.) And then- I'll blog about what I watched and what it meant to me.
Will this have tons of insider geeky knowledge where I note all the little details they included? No, I likely don't know most of those.
Will this be an incredibly insightful film critique? Doubtful, I'm not a film studies scholar- I'm just someone who really likes movies and shows and books and storytelling. I'm an ardent amateur.
What this will be is one nerdy girl reflecting on the MCU and why certain movies and characters resonate with me and what I do and don't like and what I associate with each film that I've seen (and how I feel about the pieces that I haven't). And mostly, I'm hoping blogging about it will keep me going when my squirrel brain tries to run off in distraction.
If you feel like following along, welcome. I love you 3000.

WIP Wednesday
Tagged by @deacons-wig , thanks pal!
Tagging @uniasus @danger-flammable
If you’re working on a WIP, post it! And if you do, please @ me so I can appreciate it. :)
This is an excerpt from a Fallout 4 x Animorphs crossover I’ve been slowly working on. Our sole survivor Nate here is a voluntary controller and former morph class soldier pre-war. Enjoy!
Up they flew, up from the tiny nuke town that was Sanctuary. Up, up above what passed for trees until the landscape stretched out below them like a map. Up into brilliant sunlight. The world couldn’t take this from them. Even after nuclear fallout, morphing was in their DNA, as was every animal they had acquired in their shared lifetime. They were as much the goshawk as the goshawk was them.
The goshawk’s eyes scanned the horizon—that vault atop the hill, just a hubcap in the earth, the town of Sanctuary like a child’s ruined playset, and the scar tissue of roads snaking out and away towards Concord. They flew east over the radiant bullseye of the Red Rocket station.
Down below, a dog loped across fields of faded bracken and debris. A German shepherd, collarless and alone. Before he realized what he was doing, Nate was in a dive. They landed deftly on a bent and faded stop sign. The dog’s head shot up, ears and tail at attention.
You humans and your dogs, Estril scoffed, but Nate knew his thoughts were fond.
Slowly, the dog slid his forelegs to the ground, rump and tail waving in the air like a flag. If birds could smile, Nate would be grinning. The goshawk brain told him predator but he fluttered lower to the perch of a rusty metal road buffer.
The dog padded closer, tongue lolling. His cold, wet nose pressed into their feathers, tickling them with soft but furious sniffs. The dog backed away in confusion as they began to demorph.
Feathers melted away and flesh reappeared. Nate’s eyes grew dim and human again. His hearing was clouded. The furious quiet was back. His wings became arms and his talons grew to become legs. Thankfully, the vault suit was skintight and demorphed with them.
The dog whined. Poor, confused thing. Nate crouched down in the dirt and held out his now human hand as if for a handshake. The dog crouched in a play bow again, barking, and then leapt to his feet, pushing his nose to dry skin. He buried his muzzle in Nate’s chest and Nate smiled despite himself. He patted the dog’s soft but dirty head, concentrating on the animal in his mind’s eye. The dog slackened under his touch. His furiously wagging tail slowed to a lazy wave. When the acquiring trance was over, the dog sat, tail making a heavy thump thump against the ground.
“Okay, boy,” Nate said. “Let’s go to Concord.”

My Review
WCW was rapidly spinning out of control by the time of Halloween Havoc 1999, but a new beginning seemed to be on the horizon. Vince Russo, the man who spearheaded the Attitude Era in the WWF, joined the writing team right before the show, with hopes he’d add a spark to a product that’d become convoluted and stale. Russo certainly did bring a spark; the only problem is that he wound up burning down the whole house with it. Halloween Havoc 1999 may have only just been the start of this new era, but it’s got Russo’s fingerprints all over it and, holy shit, does it go off the rails in a hurry.
In a way, Halloween Havoc and Russo’s swerve-laden booking seem like the perfect match. If there’s one event where he could go balls to the wall with crash TV and gimmickry, it’s gotta be Havoc, and heavens knows the depths of absurdism WCW reached at the event in the years before Russo anyway. Unfortunately, the ‘99 Havoc features one of Russo’s worst booking caveats⏤the worked shoot. This would happen several times throughout his tenure in WCW, each more embarrassing than the last, but his obsession with “going off the script” starts here.
The show starts conventionally enough, but it takes a hard left turn into near indescribable chaos. Midway through, we have a match between Hulk Hogan and Sting, a main event match that’s bound to draw no matter how many times it happens. But, alas, there’s a twist: Hogan “lies” down for Sting and the match ends in 3 seconds. It’s then given zero explanation or follow-up for the rest of the show, leaving the audience confused and downright angry. Even when you look past they just pissed away a match people were paying money to see, it feels like a desperate attempt to create controversy just to pop some interest in the next night’s Nitro. I don’t think Hogan “lying down” was ever explained on WCW TV though, which just makes the whole thing worse.
If that weren’t enough, the commentators and performers are constantly bringing up “the writers from up North” and the “powers that be.” It’s deliberately meant to be a wink at the audience, who are likely rolling their eyes so hard that you can practically hear it. It’s all just a way of saying “Get it? This is a bunch of fake shit. You’re watching a bunch of fakers. But this right here? This is real.” The reality is that it’s actually just embarrassing, not that Russo ever caught on. There’s still plenty of other swerves throughout the night, including a surprise Sting vs. Goldberg main event. The crowd in Las Vegas seems to dig it, at least. Too bad it’s practically impossible to connect the dots on how we even got the damn match in the first place!
Halloween Havoc 1999 is exactly the kind of madness you can expect from WCW’s annual schlockfest, but it’s even more confounding and inexplicable this time out. I guess the nicest thing I can say is that the show certainly isn’t boring. The bad part is that the fun often gives way to frustration, filling this Halloween Havoc up with more tricks than treats.
My Random Notes
On WCW Nitro for Men Cologne: Okay, I’m completely befuddled by this. I can’t imagine a grown ass adult actually purchasing it, let alone a 14-year-old. Beyond that, they have a segment on this show where Medusa and Bobby Heenan basically tell us it’s shit?
Lash LeRoux, in his ongoing quest to carve out an identity for himself, wears a dreadful Lash Vegas shirt to the ring. I’d like to think he immediately discarded it after this show and never wore it again.
Buff Bagwell takes one of the worst guitar shots I’ve ever seen. It just kinda bonks over his head. I do wonder what level of craft goes into creating a gimmicked guitar, though.
The Halloween Havoc graveyard in this outing features a headstone shared by The Boston Strangler and Jack the Ripper. Yes, folks, that’s right: The Ripper was not only identified, but also shares the same grave with another serial killer at MGM in Las Vegas. The more you know!
I haven’t seen enough of them to judge, but Revolution are pretty much like the Radicals just without Eddie, no?
Eddie stealing Ric Flair’s Rolex was a storyline at this time, apparently. It’s another example of Russo stuffing in too many storylines, but I do low-key appreciate it’s not the only documented time Eddie has stolen from Flair, must we not forget the time he stole Flair’s number at Royal Rumble ’05.
We get a quick shot of a Hogan WWF wrestling buddy in the crowd, which reminds me that I have the Warrior and Macho King ones smoldering up in my attic somewhere.
Shoutout to the show’s poster, which gives me strong Animorphs vibes and Scholastic Book Fair memories. There was also the Nickelodeon show I barely watched? I just remember there was some dude named Tobias on it.
In Russo’s obsession with confused sexual analogies, DDP delivers a promo where he winds up landing on him and Flair jerking off together. Um, okay. Not gonna try to unpack that. Happy for you tho. Or sorry that happened.
Pretty crazy to think Bret vs. Luger would’ve been an absolutely money program just five years earlier when both were headlining WrestleMania X, and now they’re here just in this 7-minute drivel of a match. I know I shouldn’t be surprised, as both were at a radically different point in their respective careers by this time, but I find their showing here depressing as fuck.

I’d say no but that’s because I have the furry tagged blocked and I still want to see your wonderful Animorphs art. Aaand my brain ran away with the question so Heres my ramble: furry s seem to be more anthropomorphic forms of existing animals than they are sentient beings with fur (like beast and Nightcrawler from x-men wouldn’t be tagged furry)
I feel like my own feelings whether or not something is furry are on a spectrum. Like, a bipedal alien without fur is nonhuman, but not a furry-- but a four-legged alien covered in fur? Now we could be edging into furry territory. For me, each “animal-like” trait a creature has nudges it further into the gravity well and towards the Furry Event Horizon. It’s all totally subjective.
(Also oh no, I’m sure your reasons for blocking that tag are valid, but you're actually missing out on a whole bunch of art on my blog that way! I use that tag sometimes. If you’re only here for Animorphs, though, you’re all good. )
#ask#the furry event horizon#from which not even light can escape#complicating things tho#totally non-anthropomorphized animals are not furry#so maybe it's more like a furry uncanny valley than a threshold#catie talks#Anonymous

72. Are you a shipper? List your otps, if so
the only pairing for which i actually consider myself a shipper is Richard Hendricks x Jared Dunn from Silicon Valley HBO ... that’s the only real OTP haha but some other fictional pairs that i enjoy (just not to the same rabid fervour) include: zutara, (come to think of it i actually tend to enjoy all canon romances in scott westerfeld’s books, he writes them very well/enjoyably), scarecrow/fox from matthew reilly’s books because like COME ON RIGHT how can you not. oh and jim and pam from the office are great. also dinfoyle is great and i enjoy hallfoyle too :)
80. What video games have you played? Which one’s your favourite?
hahha yikes get ready for a very sparse list: Animal Crossing New Horizons is my current favourite ... other things I’ve played include: Untitled Goose Game, Overcooked, Beat Saber (on Oculus VR it’s incredible i love this too) ... and that’s about it for the ones that most people would consider video games lol. also: Tetris (classic), Snow Brothers (played on a 1991 console), N (flash game, it’s great), SUPER MARIO (the 90s version)
81. Your favourite books (manga also counts)
alright strap in, here they are in no particular order, i recommend these to EVERYONE
the following by Scottt Westerfeld: Uglies trilogy (Uglies, Pretties, Specials); So Yesterday; Peeps (followed by The Last Days); Impostors (after reading Uglies trilogy); Shatter City (after reading Impostors)
Ice Station by Matthew Reilly
the following by VE Schwab: A Darker Shade of Magic (and presumably the other two in that trilogy but i’ve not read them yet); Vicious (followed by its sequel Vengeful)
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman
So Super Starry followed by So Super Stylish by Rose Wilkins
Animorphs series by KA Applegate
Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski (this is a non-fiction sex therapy book primarily aimed at cis women, like, it’s not a Favourite book for enjoyment but it’s been quite impactful/good from a sexual/mental health standpoint so i recommend this to all cis women friends haha)
Old Kingdom/Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix: Sabriel, Lirael, Abhorsen
Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green and David Levithan
The Rook by Daniel O’Malley (followed by Stiletto)
Born A Crime by Trevor Noah (best autobiography I’ve ever read)

what im watching right now - im going to sound so autistic right now but im watching satam sonic, adventures of sonic the hedgehog, and (rewatching) sonic x.
what im reading right now - havent really read anything in a while despite my stack of books building -_- i struggle hardcore focusing to read and i just read really slow and just other reading problems. i did recently read my alcoholic escape from reality by nagata kabi, and it made me reread my lesbian experience with loneliness again, and have been meaning to reread the exchange diaries she made too. other than that im technically in the middle of animorphs and just havent gotten around to the next one (book 34 so im getting close to finishing the series tbh) but who knows when i'll get around to any of those lol
going 2 tag @macabrity @floralnotes and @blynxee ^-^
