October Horror and Monster Madness! Working with Tom Cruise Rutger Hauer and James Coco in Howling VI funny story about this, I was shown the cage and I asked what the bars were made of they said foam and rubber why, I said so I can slam into them and not break them or get hurt. They said absolutely, I said good. The Howling VI: The Freaks (1991)

The Howling 6: The Freaks is a bad movie but there are a few tiny nuggets of gold in there that entertained me while watching it. If you haven’t seen any of the previous Howling movies, don’t worry about it. This entry has nothing to do with any of the other ones, despite being “based on The Howling 1, 2 and 3 by Gary Brandner”.

When a drifter named Ian (Brendan Hughes) befriends and helps the preacher (Jered Barclay) and his daughter (Michele Matheson) fix up their church, his appearance seems like a blessing. They don’t realize Ian is hiding a terrible secret (I’ll give you a hint - the first five movies in this franchise featured werewolves). When a strange traveling carnival comes to town, its owner learns of Ian’s secret and recruits him as one of his star attractions.

This film makes the biggest mistake that any werewolf movie can do. It doesn’t deliver “the money shot” transformation. Its monster doesn't even look good. When I looked at the DVD cover, I assumed the gross-looking person on the front was some kind of witch. That’s the werewolf! I’ve seen harrier people in real life. You'd guess caveman, mutant or Sasquatch before lycanthrope! If there’s one kind of horror movie that you shouldn’t take on when you don’t have a budget, it’s one of these.

Even if this picture had an awesome-looking monster, the acting is universally wooden and the writing weak. Despite this, it's fun to watch. You'll often laugh at its expense but the story keeps moving and stays entertaining throughout. It was made by people who didn’t have the experience or skills necessary to make a great product but it delivers when it comes to "The Freaks”. There aren't enough creepy carnival horror films. It's probably insensitive to make an actual alligator boy, a bearded mermaid, a “lightning woman” and other attractions of the sort objects of terror but it handled this idea well. I liked that there was some nice variety in the sideshow attractions in terms of what they looked like, but also in that some of them are nice people and others are genuine villains. For inexplicable reasons, I even took joy in seeing the romantic subplot. It adds a nice human element.

I recognize The Howling 6: The Freaks for what it is. It’s not a great movie. I own it because I heard the second film in the series was so bad you needed to see it (you do). To understand why that sequel is so bad I needed to see the first one, and then once that ball got rolling I found myself a Howling Triple Feature that had #3,5 &6 packaged together. The Howling 3: The Marsupials is as hilariously incompetent as #2; # 5 was dull and forgettable. If you've journeyed down the rabbit hole as I have, go ahead and watch this sixth chapter. It’s got bad moments you can laugh at, and a few nice moments to enjoy as well. Do I recommend The Howling 6: The Freaks? I guess I do. (On DVD, May 22, 2015)
