HI OKAY QUICK QUESTION- how do you name your ocs if you don’t mind me asking.

GOOD QUESTION i name them based on systems that change. i'll just use my splatoon ocs for reference too;

For First Names:

I tend to lean to names that are made based on a system the family uses traditionally. a lot of the character in stormy weather are named after either fish or names related to the sea- though there are exceptions of course.

also; they sometimes, like i previously stated, have rules to their names

Gar, Moray, and Piranha are all named after fish with sharp teeth. thats because Marlin wanted his kids to have intimidating names/sound scary. (hes also just a big goof)

with Hope and Whimsy, their names were accidental, but they have symbolism in the story. theyre Gar's kids who did, in fact, give him hope & whimsy overtime and helped him learn to appreciate things again.

Also spitballing names until they stick works well.

For Last Names;

I generally used names based on their species.

Tilly's last name is lescens, because its part of her scientific species name; Doryteuthis Opalescens- or the Opalescent Inshore Squid.

Gar Incirri's is based on what type of tentacle his octopus ancestor (the Giant Pacific Octopus). Octopus are classified between Incirrina/Incirrata, and Cirrina/Cirrata. The Giant Pacific octopus is under the sub-orser Incirrina, thus Gar's last name being Incirri- part of the name.

Then of course; Minnow Firefly, is just taken from their species common name, the Firefly Squid.

Otherwise, again, spitballing til it sticks works pretty well too.
