Practical Life Skills for Everyone
Wolverine X Reader FLUFF
Content: The new Home Ec teacher encounters the Shop Class teacher at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters
Note: photos come from Pinterest and collage made by me hehe
Tw: SAFE FOR POC/FEM READERS- Author can’t write dialogue, Logan is called short ONCE (written with comic accurate Wolverine in mind-but can be movie Logan too) reader is given pet names/refered to as she/Ms.
I haven’t written a serious fic since high school and I want to get back out here again hooray!
—————————————————————————
A new semester, apple on the desk, pots and pans freshly washed, sewing machines at the ready. Nothing this semester could stop you- starting fresh at Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters brought to fruition everything you’d hoped for. Family, a career, children, and most importantly- stability.
A word normally foreign for mutants of all kinds, yourself included. Settling down as a teacher helped to blend your identity. Charles had located you on purpose- something you’d come to terms with over the last few months spent bonding with the staff and fellow X-Men. You’d been offered a position as a teacher and had accompanied several missions, all successful due to your mutation. It wasn’t easy- and took many years to develop and control your abilities the way you could. You’d managed on your own just fine before this but life was lonely at best, suffocating at worst. A life spent using your mutation to survive- Now you could live.
You’d initially been brought on to train a young mutant named Rouge- with a similar ability, training her was rewarding. It was like a reflection of your younger self staring back st you. About a century ago you had no community, family, friends.
That reality seemed so far away compared to the life you lived now. You mused this thought to yourself unlocking the door to your classroom. You set the books on top of your perfectly organized desk- perfect timing as the students began filling in for the day.
You pulled up their bell work to complete on the projector watching one by one as they sorted themselves into groups ready. A slight drone of music started down the hall and the bell announced the start of another day.
Beginning with collecting the bell work, you started the students off with a simple recipe to complete before the end of class. Classic chocolate chip cookies- a family favorite and good way to observe the student’s skill levels.
“More salt Colby, the acidity is necessary”
“Yes Ms. Y/N”
“Scrape the flour off the top of the measuring cup for an even amount, Emma”
“Thanks, professor Y/N!”
It wasn’t long before each student had a decent batch of cookies ready to grade and devour- the edible ones at least..
But before any grading could be done- or eating the music level from the hall rose to an absurd level
“Does anyone know who has their music so loud this morning?” You stated opening the door to the hallway “I hardly think this time of morning is-“
“It’s the shop class down the hall” one of the students stated, also mildly annoyed
“Hmmm, shop class? I didn’t know we offered shop this semester.. Do you think the professor would-“
A chorus of “No way!” “Do not!” and “He’ll kill you!” erupted from the students
“Who? I hardly think anyone would be so ill-tempered about asking to cut the music down so early”
“It’s professor Logan, he’s back this semester”
“Then I guess we’ll have to give him a ring- this volume is a little much, surely he wouldn’t mind?”
The students held their breath as you dialed the shop’s classroom on the school phone
It was a wonder anyone picked up the phone in the shop. Many students gathered around the bike Logan was introducing as the senior class project. A chance to not only test their skills but add personal flare- a teenagers wet dream truly.
Some eager students had been sent to gather the tool on the bench when one notice the phone ringing. They answered and briefly spoke to the teacher on the other end before hanging up the phone. One student simply turned the music down- enough for Logan to notice. He didn’t like the settings messed with unless he did so himself, especially by his students.
“Who touched the radio?” He demanded
The students silently stood there as the music paused completely. One student bravely spoke up
“It was the phone-“
“The phone cut the music down?” He interrupted
“No, a teacher called and asked us to do it”
“Who? I sweat if you answered Scott and listened! What’s the first rule in shop!?” He sighed, already tired from the day and needing a drink.
He wasn’t cut out for this ‘teacher’ shit, Logan thought to himself. He’d tried to argue with Charles claiming he had better things to do and had been promptly reminded of how much time he spends in the garage should be put to good use.
He signed as he sensed his pupils unease and cut the music back on and instructed them to get started. He stalked to the phone clicking a few buttons to figure out what classroom called to complain ready to give Scott a piece of his mind. He ran out to steam seeing it was your classroom that had called. The new teacher who’d started their first semester just down the hall. He’d meant to stop by and welcome you but meeting people without confrontation had never been his strongest quality. What better time than now. He left the students to their assignment and carried himself down the hall ready to introduce himself.
A knock on the door interrupted the classroom buzz and a hush fell over the students. You padded over to the door and peeked out the small window. A short man, clad in a black t shirt and jeans stared back at you with an unreadable expression.
“Good morning! What can I do for you?” You trailed off not recognizing him.
“You called the shop a minute ago” he stated twirling the toothpick in his mouth
“Yes, I’m sorry to bother- You must be professor Logan”
“Mm hm” he answered shortly, stepping out further in the hall while you closed the door behind you.
“I’m sorry if I upset you, it was just a little loud for my students and I this morning-“
He held a hand up “Not a problem, doll. I can’t upset my favorite teacher, right?”
“Favorite teacher? We just met” you said with a light laugh
“I’ve been around a long time- I know a good girl when I see one”
“I hardly think that’s appropriate to say here”
“No? Maybe I can say it another way or another time?” His lips curling up in a smug smile “How about you come down to the shop after classes- Grab a drink later?”
“Oh! Uh sure? I guess so?” From the way the students reacted you’d assumed this teacher was awful, even horrible. Be here is his- polite as ever and asking to grab a drink?
“I like that answer” he laughed leaning closer “Meet me later at garage three- I’ll take you to Abe’s”
Abe’s was one of the nicer bars in the city, a place known for anniversaries, couples flocking there left and right for an evening out. You’d never stopped by until tonight- now you had plans for once with a complete stranger- a handsome one at that.
“I’ll see you later then, garage three”
“Looking forward to it, sweetheart” he said turning to head back to his class
You entered your room once again as the class held their breath. No yelling, no cussing, no words of any kind were heard and the students had feared your first day would be your last- they didn’t know that this was just the beginning

I intended this to just be a sketch, but i liked it so much that I ended up making a mini ref sheet of Aerine, the first dnd character I ever made. I’ve only been playing for around 2 years but out of over a dozen campaigns that ended early or fell through, she’s been the longest standing one ! So while her design and story is a bit “basic” compared to other characters I’ve made since then, she has a special place in my heart 🩷
here’s her spotify playlist and pinterest board too hehe
more random infodumping about her below !
Her campaign (Tales from Estaria) is from a homebrew world by my amazing dm! It’s very Victorian-era / steampunk inspired with lots of eldritch horror elements. The dress in her reference sheet (designed by @angeliets ) is intended to be her wedding dress! I had tried to draw her wedding dress myself before (which you can see in this tiktok i made about her ) but after seeing his design when joining his ko-fi membership, I knew I had to change it immediately. The veil is a bit different than his original design, as she would be using a veil gifted by her mother! Here are some more outfit ideas I’ve drawn (please ignore my inconsistent art style lol)
As for the quote I put on her ref sheet, it comes from something I said during a session. For context, our party visited a very religious country where magic coming from any source other than their god is illegal. We brought with us a child our party has been protecting, Peter, who who had celestial runes carved into his arms after his family was slaughtered by a cult worshipping a being known as the Lady of the Woods, one of the four eldritch beings who are trying to end the world.
While stopping in one of the towns for a rest, Peter’s scars were noticed by a civilian who thought we had kidnapped/harmed him. We tried explaining, but they were unresponsive and Peter, who has aasimar blood and is a draconic soul sorcerer without full control of his abilities yet because he’s a literal child, freaked out trying to pull away and used some magic. With that, the civilians then started calling HIM a monster and attacked him which is all it took for the entire party to go off on them.
Of course, as a party consisting of two tieflings, a hexblood, a warforged and Aerine, and with 3/5 being casters, it wasn’t a good look and the people started calling us devils. We did manage to do (mostly) non-lethal damage, and the warforged ended up crashing a carriage into the building for us to get away. Aerine said that line before slamming the carriage door shut which was honestly a badass moment for her as she’s normally very polite and gentle in her speech. She was extremely upset at the audacity of these people to use their religious beliefs to excuse hurting an innocent child, especially when moments before they were SO concerned.
She is very protective of the innocent, especially children. Which is also why her dislikes include the part about not liking when her party members giving children weapons. Several of the members have given Peter weapons or taught him how to use them. They do have good intentions, as they want him to be able to protect himself in case of the worst of they aren’t there to do so. However, she strongly believes that it isn’t a responsibility or burden that should ever be placed on a child, and that they instead should work to improve themselves and their abilities so that there is never a possibility of such a situation occurring.
NOW AS FOR THE MONSTER PART LMAO
So everyone knows the reputation bards have, and well, she’s probably the least bard of all bards in that manner (hooray strict and sheltered upbringings in a society literally inspired by the Victorian era!). I thought it would be a funny idea to roll the dice any time we encountered an NPC to see how attractive she found them, and it backs a long running joke. However, she would always roll super low for everyone ! It wasn’t until mid-battle one day when the warlock (who has a weird Venom-type situation going on) was in their monstrous form that I was like, hm, wouldn’t this count as an npc since it’s technically a different being? that I randomly decided to roll and got like an 18 or something really high like that 😂 since then, I’ve rolled for many more npcs and even monster type creatures (such as this death lich we came across) and she’s only - ONLY- rolled higher than a 14 for monsters.
Well, she did also roll very high (actually, it may have even been a Nat20) when I rolled for the tiefling ranger after he came back from 5 months(5 minutes in the material plane) of being stuck in the Feywild with a hot nymph with a beard from not being allowed to shave. It may or may not have sparked a small crush on him since then. Funnily enough, last session we encountered his human version in an alternate timeline from our own, and she did indeed roll lower in her attraction for his human version than his original version. So apparently the farther from human, the more attracted she is. A true monster lover!
Anyways this ended up , much more of a lore dump than I expected! I love talking about her and her adventures with the party, so I’ll probably be sharing more once in a while. Maybe even sharing art of the party members? Who knows !

An easy summer rustic tart that makes the most of ripe and juicy seasonal tomatoes. This tomato galette has a beautifully crisp and flaky pastry. It’s topped with a layer of basil pesto which is then covered in colourful cherry tomatoes. Delicious served either warm from the oven or cold next day.
Galettes are now my favourite form of tart to bake, be they savoury or sweet. They’re just so much easier to make than a classic tart or pie. There’s no need for any pre-cooking before the tart is assembled and goes into the oven. No tin is required either, which means less faffing about and less washing up – hooray!
What’s a Galette Anyway?
The word galette is a French noun derived from galet, which means pebble. It’s usually used to describe a form of flat round dough. This could be a cake, biscuit, crèpe, bread or pastry. These days, the term mostly refers to a rustic tart, as in this tomato galette, which you free-form into a round rather than shape in a tin. You may or may not fold the pastry up over the edges. In fact, I’ve sometimes made this particular galette as a completely open tart, as in the photo below.
As you can see, this tomato galette is easily adaptable. For this one, I didn’t use a rolling pin at all, just my hands. I also used a few less less tomatoes but added some spring onions. The Italians refer to this type of free-form tart as crostata.
Tomato Galette with Basil Pesto
In the summer months, I often make this rustic French inspired tomato tart. As tarts go, it’s a pretty easy one to make. It can be on the table from start to finish in less than an hour. It’s a good one to make for friends as, despite its rustic appearance, it has a wonderful aroma, looks really appealing and is absolutely delicious. We tend to enjoy it with a large serving of zingy green salad.
Tomatoes and basil are a classic pairing and there’s a good reason for it. They seem to both compliment and bring out the flavours of the other at the same time. They are paired all over the Mediterranean, but particularly so in France and Italy it seems. One of Italy’s most famous salads features tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. Here’s my version of it, Caprese salad bowl for one.
I’ve used wholemeal spelt pastry in this recipe. It’s delicious and always produces a gorgeous flaky result. But if you’re in a real rush or just can’t be bothered, use shop-bought pastry. Likewise homemade pesto is generally much nicer than the commercial stuff and it’s really easy to make. But again, sometimes life just gets in the way, so you can easily substitute bought pesto for homemade if you need to.
#gallery-0-4 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-4 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-4 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Roll out pastry.
Spread with a layer of pesto, leaving a centimetre or so clear around the border.
Top with halved cherry tomatoes.
Fold the edges up and over the tomatoes.
You’ll probably find it hard to resist finishing this tomato galette immediately; it’s especially good warm from the oven. However, any leftovers will perk up the morrow’s lunch box no end, so if you can muster up some restraint, it’ll be worth it.
Wholemeal Spelt Pastry
This pastry recipe is my absolute favourite homemade pastry. It’s easy to make, rolls well and produces a beautiful flaky crust. The secret to its success, is wholemeal spelt flour and yoghurt. The yoghurt binds the dough together, but keeps it light and the spelt gives a nutty and slightly sweet flavour. I’ve added some ground cayenne pepper to the pastry to give it a little additional oomph, but this is entirely optional.
Homemade Basil Pesto
The amount of pesto given in this recipe is more than you’ll need for the tomato galette. But it will keep in the fridge for a few days and you can use it in any number of ways. It’s perfect for pasta, of course, but it’s also delicious in sandwiches, forked through rice or quinoa, mixed into cooked vegetables or simply spread on crackers.
All you need to do, is add the pesto ingredients into a blender and whizz it into a paste. I used my power blender, the Optimum Vac2* for this pesto, but you can easily use a food processor instead.
Homegrown Tomatoes
We’ve managed to grow quite a few tomatoes this year and all of them outdoors. They’re the most delicious tomatoes I’ve had in a long time and we’ve saved them specifically for eating just as they are or in a salad. CT grew the cherry tomatoes, pictured below, at work. They’re also very good and are perfect for making this tomato galette.
Cherry tomatoes work particularly well in this type of tart. They’re small enough so that you can just cut them in half. And if you place them skin-side down, they’ll mostly contain their juice. On the other hand, you’d have to slice large tomatoes which would allow the juice to leek out all over the dough and the edges of the tin. This not only creates an awful mess, but it produces a wet and soggy dough.
For me, chilli and tomatoes are a match made in heaven, so I sprinkle a few chilli flakes over the top of this tomato galette. The same goes for this though as it does for the pastry, any chilli is entirely optional. Reduce or increase the amounts depending on how ‘hot’ you like your food.

Tomato Galette with Homemade Pesto – The Recipe
Tomato Galette with Homemade Pesto
This easy summer rustic tart has a beautifully crisp and flaky pastry topped with a layer of basil pesto which is then covered in cherry tomatoes.
Pastry
250 g wholemeal spelt flour
150 g unsalted butter
pinch of sea salt
3 tbsp yoghurt
½ tsp ground cayenne pepper or chilli powder of choice ((optional))
Basil, Almond & Cheddar Pesto
50 g basil
50 g almonds
50 g mature cheddar cheese
1 clove garlic
1 pinch sea salt
50 ml extra virgin olive oil + a little for drizzling
35 cherry tomatoes – halved ((multi-coloured ones are fun))
½ tsp chilli flakes ((optional))
Pastry
Cut the cold butter into the flour, chilli and salt with a knife, then either rub between finger tips or pulse in a food processor until the mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
Stir in the yoghurt with a knife until the mixture comes together into a ball.
If the dough is too soft to roll immediately, cover and leave to rest in the fridge or a cool place for ½ hr. I generally have a cool kitchen, so I tend to roll mine out straight away.
Roll out on a floured surface into a rough circle, about 4mm in thickness.
Place on a baking tray lined with baking parchment.
Basil, Almond & Cheddar Pesto
Blitz the basil, almonds, cheese, garlic and salt in a blender or food processor until roughly ground. I've been using my Optimum Vac2 blender* for this recently.
Add the olive oil and blitz again until you have a rough paste.
Spread a thin layer of pesto over the pastry leaving a border of about 1 cm.
Cover the pesto with the tomato halves cut side up, but leaving a border of about 1 cm from the pesto edge. Drizzle a little olive oil over the tomatoes and scatter the chilli flakes on top if using.
Fold the 2 cm edges inward over the filling, tucking the pastry in as you go. You should have a large (ish) open centre with the tomatoes shining out..
Bake in a pre-heated oven at 200℃ (400℉, Gas 6) for about 25 minutes when the tomatoes should be cooked and the pastry crisp and golden.
Serves 6 – 8 people depending on how hungry they are and what you serve with the tart.
You will make more pesto than you need for this recipe. Place the unused pesto in a jar, pour over a thin layer of olive oil and seal. Will keep in the fridge for a week or so. But once opened, eat within three days.
Excellent served with a zingy green salad.
Please note: calories and other nutritional information are per serving. They’re approximate and will depend on serving size and exact ingredients used.

Assignment two: Thinking of you
Analyse the brief
What are you being asked to do?
The brief asks me to create a range of at least three greetings cards for sentiments or events, for which cards don’t exist at the moment. These can be linked and work as a series, or each card can express and unrelated sentiment and stand alone.
The brief provides some examples of the kinds of subjects that might be commemorated or commiserated:
calendar events
obscure saints days
sporting calendars
any other happening that’s worth celebrating or commiserating
life landmarks that don’t feature in greetings cards
getting your first grey hairs
being released from prison
any other personal landmark
I am being asked to design the cover of each card and the message inside. I should base the shape of the card on the size of an envelope that I have available. I may also choose to include the envelope in the design process.
What are the keywords?
greetings cards, illustrated, folded, sentiments, events, worthy, not catered for, landmarks, celebrating, commiserating, want to share, cover and message, envelope, other forms, three, unrelated or series
Initial thoughts
The brief asks for designs of cards for events or sentiments that are “not catered for by card manufacturers,” so as well as coming up with unusual or left-field ideas, I’ll need to carry out some additional research to check that the ideas are original. This is important because some of the examples given in the brief - as “landmarks that don’t currently feature in greetings cards” - couldn’t be used because they do already exist and so wouldn’t fulfil the terms of the brief
Examples:
In fact, following further online research, it’s apparent that the task is more difficult than it first appears because of the sheer variety of cards available online. Because of the success in recent years of bespoke greetings cards manufacturers, based on the new printing technology that makes printing individual or small numbers of cards economically viable, almost any kind of event, celebration of sentiment is already covered by greetings cards manufacturers.
An example of this www.greetingcarduniverse.com
there’s even an entire site dedicated to cards for people in prison: https://jailmatecards.co.uk
I’ve created a mind map, using the keywords events, landmarks, celebrations and commiserations to try to develop some ideas:
Most of the ideas represented here are fairly standard, although some - such as the idea of cards commemorating historical events - might be worth pursuing with further research.
I also created another mindmap to look at slightly unusual or humorous approaches:
Following the creation of my mind-maps, I did some further visual research to see which of the ideas I’d generated were already covered by greetings card manufacturers. The sheer variety of greetings cards is such that I found examples of the vast majority of these ideas. I created a Pinterest board containing the visual research that I carried out:
What’s evident from looking online for existing examples is that for any popular sentiment that might be expressed, including those that are humorous, satirical, profane or even offensive, there is a greeting card to be found somewhere online.
The ideas on my mind maps that I couldn’t find examples of - or many examples of - are as follows:
Idea #1
(Taken from a suggestion in the brief)
Cards referring to obscure saints days - while the standard saint days are represented (George, David, Patrick and Andrew), as well as others, such as St Joseph and St Valentine, the vast majority of saints seem to not be commemorated on greetings cards. However, there is a danger that - due to us not being a Catholic county - a lot of these saints will be unknown, limiting the interest of the cards to the general public. This would be an obvious solution to the brief since it was suggested by the brief itself.
Idea #2
Series of cards that represents sequences of sporting success. While there is a huge variety of individual cards commemorating a Welsh rugby grand slam or the fact that Liverpool Football Club has won five European cups, there don’t seem to be individual cards referring to specific occasions that might form a series with others that are designed similarly. There are, however, may cards commemorating sporting clubs and the exploits of particular teams.
Idea #3
Cards referring to not well known, yet significant historical dates. There are some cards that commemorate dates such as Armistice Day or women winning the vote, but generally speaking, historical cards are less common than those expressing personal sentiments.
Idea #4
One of the humorous ideas that came out of my mind-mapping was to create a series of sarcastic cards that represent everyday frustrations in an amusing, bathetic manner. The heightened celebratory tone of a standard greeting card heading is undermined with a blunt prosaic line and a payoff inside the card that forms a mild humorous rebuke.
Examples include:
- Congratulations....on cooking dinner (Inside: I never knew you had it in you!)
- Well done...for putting the rubbish out (Inside: Miracles do happen!)
- Hooray! ...you hoovered! (Inside: There’s a first time for everything!)
However, as shown through my visual research, there are lots of cards around that address everyday circumstances and concerns in a humorous and irreverent manner.
Further research
I’ve decided to look in more detail at Idea #3, since it seems to be the area that has least in common with what’s generally available on the market and historical events are probably a relatively unexpected subject area for greetings cards.

I've moved a big step closer to perfecting my "Read" posts!
Hoorah, hooray!
In a project which I started just before IndieWebCamp LA in November, I’ve moved a big step closer to perfecting my “Read” posts!
Thanks in large part to WordPress, PressForward, friends and help on the IndieWeb site too numerous to count, and a little bit of elbow grease, I can now receive and read RSS feeds in my own website UI (farewell Feedly), bookmark posts I want to read later (so long Pocket, Instagram, Delicious and Pinboard), mark them as read when done, archive them on my site (and hopefully on the Internet Archive as well) for future reference, highlight and annotate them (I still love you hypothes.is, but…), and even syndicate (POSSE) them automatically (with emoji) to silos like Facebook, Twitter (with Twitter Cards), Tumblr, Flipboard, LinkedIn, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, Reddit, and Delicious among others.
Syndicated copies in the silos when clicked will ping my site for a second and then automatically redirect to the canonical URL for the original content to give the credit to the originating author/site. And best of all, I can still receive comments, likes, and other responses from the siloed copies via webmention to stay in the loop on the conversations they generate without leaving my site.
Here’s an example of a syndicated post to Twitter:

— ChrisAldrich (@ChrisAldrich) February 23, 2017
I’m now more resistant to a larger number of social media silos disappearing with my data. Huzzah!
What’s next?
