Summer Hoop Dance to Go Bang by PNAU

I filmed this video about a week ago before I had the courage to post it; this was the first time I picked up a hoop in almost 6 months. I immediately felt inspired to record a video because I had forgotten just how happy hooping makes me. 

My hoop grounds me. It gives me a sense of clarity. And I can’t believe I ever forgot that--that I fell out of my passion--but after this flow session, I was inspired to begin my journey back into what I truly love, an art that I had discovered in 2009, but I had lost my momentum. I think It’s coming back, and I’m so excited to continue my hoop journey.

I fire hooped for the first time in over a year and was surprised at how much I missed the amazing warmth of flames surrounding my body. The visceral feeling of spinning fire, completely in control of something that I should probably be afraid of.

Even though I was rusty and too wary to throw the flaming ring up in the air, or jump through it as I used to, I feel optimistic that I can get back into an aspect of hooping that I ignored for far too long.

When I first started hooping about seven years ago, I had never heard of fire hooping, but warmed up to the idea after meeting several hoopers who told me how amazing of a feeling it was.

I looked up several fire meetups and eventually found a meetup at The Love Shack, a strange beanbag store located on Lincoln Blvd in Venice, California. It was quite an odd place, but I was immediately welcomed by fellow flow dancers who spun poi, staff, hoop, and even fire jump ropes.

I asked a hooper if I could use their fire hoop, which they happily obliged. I hadn’t purchase one yet because I was unsure whether I would like it or not. 

I’m happy I filmed my first time fire hooping, I had just turned 14 and I still look back at that time fondly. Here is a link to the video, which was posted on my old YouTube channel:

I bought my own fire hoop very shortly after my first time fire hooping from a company called Sacred Flame. I chose a very reflective gold color with six wicks extending out.

After buying my own hoop, I fire hooped about once a week for a couple of years. It was a little harder to fire hoop as I lived in an urban area with people constantly walking by, and I didn’t want to get in trouble or accidentally hurt someone.

After moving up to Berkeley, fire hooping was out of the question. I had no place to store my hoop, and if I had brought it up, I would have no idea where to even use it.

I traveled back to Los Angeles this weekend and I’m so happy I did. Not only was I able to see my wonderful family, I was able to be reunited with something I forgot how much I had loved.
