“Smoking was introduced into the Mughal empire at the end of Akbar’s reign, when Asad Beg, one of his noblemen, brought tobacco and hookahs, or waterpipes, back from Bijapur in the Deccan. Asad Beg reported that tobacco was well known at Mecca and Medina and presented Akbar with a fine jewelled pipe with a mouthpiece of Yemeni carnelian. Although Akbar’s physician forbade him to smoke, the fashion for hookahs soon caught on and, as in Iran, various objects were adapted to hold the scented water through which the tobacco smoke passed. These included coconuts and various types of glass vessel, including bottles in which Dutch gin was exported, as well as spherical containers shaped like Indian waterpots [see MTW 1558]. These rested on rings or collars so that they stood upright. In addition, small hand-held hookah bases were made, some in the shape of mangoes or other fruit, or even in animal form and, as in this case, a dolphin.”

leander's keepsakes

1 - brona's bloom bouquet

leander is a grey warden.

but he's not a perfect warden and he would be the first to tell you that he isn't - closely followed by the first warden.

he's impulsive, brash, has a clear and bright view of what he sees as right and what he sees as wrong and how he must act accordingly. he doesn't seem to take the weight of his role too seriously either - but the truth is, he does.

it often seems like their fight is endless. like it's pointless. amounting to nothing than a horrible death.

but the flowers that bloomed in the hossberg wetlands, near lavendel, and the lives they saved there, are a first true sign of something tangible, something more than hope ephemeral.

2 - antivan coffee maker

a gift from lucanis.

lucanis, who thought neve's tastes (or lack thereof) were bad, hadn't yet seen what leander willingly drinks and eats.

3 - griffon crest

leander was born in tevinter, his mother and father were both elven slaves in a moderately rich household in vol dorma. vol dorma deals with darkspawn incursions, the imperial city close to the border to the anderfels, with weisshaupt in reach.

his family made plans to flee to the anderfels. the people there, they say, can live on the merits of their work, rather than their race. his mother died in the attempt and his father died on the road.

a small patrol of grey wardens saved him and took him to one of the grey warden settlements in anderfels - not so dissimilar from lavendel - called eichweill, where he will later, much later, meet evka and antoine.

as he grows, leander does what little he can. house work, pig farming, yet he always managed to get into trouble - stealing, lashing out.

it was all supposed to be different.

living in eichweill, he took on the name of the grey warden who saved him. thorne. the crest is one such thing he... borrowed. a keepsake of old warden thorne. he tells himself it's not sentimental. it's practical. safe. a vint name is not.

4 - novella collection

leander joins the book club not so long after it forms.

at first, simply dropping in, listening to the others. bellara always manages to make him smile. later, he picks up the books they read. the book are stacked on his drawer. when they can, both he and emmrich take turns to read chapters of the books to each other - though emmrich does it better. or perhaps, he just likes emmrich's voice.

5 - exquisite serpentine hookah

a gift from neve.

perfect for winding down after a mission, if time permits such indulgences.

perfect to be shared, too.

6 - dalish nug sculpture

a gift from davrin.

carved for leander after encouraging him to find his turlum with assan - and perhaps an offering to mend their broken relationship.

they had known in each other at weisshaupt, yet a secret mission entrusted to davrin set them on different paths.

7 - toy griffon

like the vase of brona's bloom, it's a reminder who and what leander is doing this for, despite his crippling fear of a warden's ultimate fate.

8 - varric's shaving mirror

wardens should keep it casual. friendly, but casual. it's easier to not get attached to things. to people.

leander does try to live by this motto - same as davrin. yet he's quite exceptionally bad at it. he didn't set out to grow attached to varric, but he did.

varric's advice, his companionship and the camaraderie, is invaluable to leander.

9 - tapestry: protectors

the tapestry shows a grey warden in the role leander would like to think about most: a protector. a shield. someone risking it all to save others.

not... whatever becomes of them - whatever will become of him - when the calling beckons.

10 - tapestry: the soul's journey

a gift from emmrich.

leander is deathly afraid of the end. he fears the calling above all. it's one thing to die and give your life for a cause, this is another beast entirely.

this fear, this thought that consumes him entire, is something that emmrich notices and one that he offers help to deal with.

many evenings find both of them talking for hours and hours - or rather emmrich talks of the soul and its journey, the beliefs of the nevarrans, of the mourn watch, and leander listens.

it brings leander more comfort than he could express to emmrich.

I don't have anything against Melissa but finally someone who's writing for other characters. Your Janine fic was great, love how you did the slow burn, and now a possible Ava fic? Yeah I'm reading it

Melissa has over 200 stories on ao3 alone, just based on her and an oc or reader. Add the x Barbara stories, and it's a mountain compared to the rest. The stories are wonderful, but you'd think she was the one and only character on the show. 😳 Seriously, the numbers for Ava and Janine are dismal. I haven't even checked the others, but I doubt it's much different.

I have to join the collective fight to at least get half of that amount for the others. 🫡🤧

Ava will come soon after, but yes, Janine is getting her second addition next week. Another getting together story, but it's more solid for a sequel established relationship fic later on. It's based on the episodes sick and holiday hookah. The established relationship fic will be based on the episodes read-a-thon and fight. 🫶🏾 (Yes, I'm still trapped in a season two hyperfixation. 🫣🤧)

M!Reader x Great Hawk + M!Reader + M!Robin

The day seemingly started well.

Lunch was uninterrupted. No Witery in the halls to bother you or try to undress you while going to class. No Kylar to weirdly look at you or try to talk to you while somehow being unable to do so. Not to mention you came to class with Robin, so it wasn’t too bad, especially not after last night.

“So… about that… hawk you mentioned…”

You sign, remembering your little slip up. Having two partners, of which one is a freaking harpy, is a bit hard to explain to someone like Robin. He never saw the things you did, the dogboys in the street, the centaurs on Alex’s farm. It was a unique thing that not everyone saw, and you were one of those who did. 

“He’s a harpy. And he’s very nice. I get it’s hard to understand, but please, trust me he’s a harpy and very nice. Maybe I should take you to the Hookah parlour sometimes…” The more you went there, the less mixing your brain did with everything.

“Yea, no, I’m good.”

“No, seriously. It’ll help. I can take you to him if you want to.” Maybe not the greatest idea, since he didn’t seem to enjoy the thought of you having more than one partner. You explained to him that you love both of them and that it’s not something odd for people like you to do that, but since you were now also a harpy with your wings and tail, he probably didn’t see you like a landbound as he said.

“I’m still having a hard time understanding it… But you do seem happy with him, so I guess it’s not that bad. Even if your interests are… well, interesting.” Robin did try to brush it off, but it was obvious that he was a bit taken back still, probably even a bit uncomfortable. It’s not that you could try to change his mind in the long run.

You sat down on your chair, starting to think about why you even came to school. You have the best grades, skipping classes wouldn’t do much when it came to your teachers since you would always pass the exams when you had them. Though, going with Robin like this was a good way of still maintaining some more relationship outside of dates you’d have with him. WIth all the trying to collect enough money to pay Baily for the both of you, doing a lot of work all the time wasn’t something you enjoyed and it took out a lot of your time. It’s why skipping school wasn’t too bad of a thing.

History at least wasn’t that bad. It also made you remember that knowing all of this was the only reason you were able to meet your harpy. Who knew if that would’ve happened if it wasn’t for this class. Sometimes, you were grateful for being a good student. Winter wasn’t that bad of a teacher too.

As you listened to what was said, sometimes writing down interesting things for later, everything seemed to go normal.

Until someone screamed at the window, alarming the whole class that something was there.

At first, you thought it was someone just walking around nude or half naked. It wouldn’t be surprising for this town, but still understandable to have such a reaction from some people. Maybe someone else being weird too, it wouldn’t be surprising.

However, no. It was your mate. Banging on the window.

What even happened there?

He’d never done that before. There were situations where you’d go without visiting him for a while, so it wasn’t that he was ever upset over it before. Why now? Did something change suddenly?

“Alright kids, let’s get out of the class. Probably would be good to call someone to remove that hawk away. Geez, how do they even outgrow like this? I’ve never seen something like this before.” Winter was getting out all the children out of the classroom. While everyone was too worried about something happening and quickly leaving the room, you hid underneath your desk, hoping that they’d close the door once they were out.

You were full of luck then, as the door was closed, no one noticing you were not with them.

Revealing yourself, you walked towards the window opening it and thus making your harpy stop knocking on the window.

“What happened? What made you come here?”

“Husband away for too long,” he simply said. Unlike the rest, you saw a pretty harpy that loved you very much and not a hawk.  

“It gets lonely up there. Pains me to sing alone.”

Truly, this was a first. Maybe he’d just been a lot more patient before and was now losing that patience? You can’t tell for sure.

“I’m sorry. Once this is done, I’ll come back okay? I can’t leave until a bit longer. I promise I'll be back today!” Maybe you can skip swimming. And considering you doubt Winter would want to continue class after this, you can just go straight for the road. Your wings will carry you faster than your legs too.

“Husband promises?”

“Husband promises.”

That did seem to calm him down. He was already not knocking on the window, but now he seemed even more relaxed. At least that was solved. 

There was a screech before he got off, flying into the sky. Hopefully he’ll be at the tower soon.

“Was that… the hawk?”

You flinched at the sound of Robin’s voice. Did he hide too? You weren’t paying much attention to who was leaving so you probably missed him staying as he probably hid as well.

“Yes, that was him. He’s never done this before so I was surprised. He really missed me that much. I haven’t been at the tower in a while, so I guess it did make sense. Still, it was uncalled for.”

“He’s uh… very big for a hawk. I didn’t imagine him like that, to be honest.” Robin was like the others, surprised at his size. To you it was nothing odd, but for those who weren’t aware enough, he was a very big hawk. 

“I think that when I’m back from my visit at the tower I should take you to the Hookah parlour. No way I’m gonna listen to you call my harpy a hawk again!”

“H-hey! I’m not wrong,” Robin cried. “Still, it was a bit odd seeing him so… close. I guess it wasn’t so bad.”

He was reluctant to admit it, but who wouldn’t? Knowing your partner was in love with a harpy would be a hit to anyone, but Robin was handling it practically well.

“You know, maybe if I bring you there you can become a harpy like us too~”

“Don’t tease me like that!”

You did stop with it, knowing you two should probably get out of the classroom. 

It did make you happy to know he was being more at peace with your other partner. Harvesting a happy relationship was important and his understanding meant a lot. 

You both sneaked out of the classroom, and in the end ended up leaving the school while holding hands. You’d walk with him to the orphanage and then get ready for your trip to the moor. 

And with all that, it was a sunny day. What a lovely time.

“Back already, sera?” Boderi smiled at him as he placed a stack of twenty drakes on the counter. Teldryn smiled back and nodded, tucking a strand of his long hair behind his ear.

“Ash looks to be picking up,” He stated as he pushed the stack of drakes towards the publican, “Will probably take that room you were offering, yeah? Is twenty enough for a filled tub an a meal?”

She nodded and took the coin from him, replacing it with a small, metal key, “Your room is downstairs, first door on the left. Tub and hot food might take an hour or so.”

“All good, I got errands,” Teldryn smirked at the older Dunmer as he waved his newly bought copy of ‘Words of the Wind’ about, “Zainsubani was down those stairs, yeah?”

He nodded towards the staircase just off the bar, earning him an affirming nod from the publican.

“Right, well…wish me luck I guess.” Teldryn sighed as he set off towards the staircase. He let his fingers brush against the cool, blue tile that decorated the walls as he made his descent. The smell of hackle-lo and dried kreshweed permeated from the floor below. A thick aroma that told him Hassour Zainsubani liked to take part in a similar vice to that of most Dunmer, himself included.

The room he found himself in was richly decorated with thick, red tapestries that had the sigil of House Redoran embroidered within the rich red fabric.

He felt a little homesick.

Teldryn’s eyes scanned the room, finding it mostly empty save for a few mercenaries happily lazing about on the various cushions that littered the room. Most had been arranged around several hookahs that were being thoroughly enjoyed by what Teldryn assumed to be Zainsubani’s caravan guards.

It made his fingers itch, and he placed his hand in his left pocket, feeling the cool, metal tin between his fingers. He’d play this by ear, hopefully he would be able to get away with one to relieve his nerves. Though he’d try and get through this whole ordeal first. He sighed, letting go of the case and folding his arms. He scanned the room, peering through clouds of sweet-smelling smoke for his query. Eventually, he locked eyes with an older Dunmer dressed in netch leather that had been cut in a way that he was unfamiliar with. The mer leaned forward, placing the hose in his hand back onto its stand, a lightly blue-tinged smoke still billowing out of the tip. “Yes?” The mer asked, raising a thick, unruly eyebrow at him, “Do you have business with me, dumu?”

Teldryn tilted his head at the term, he’d heard it, sure, spoken by his father decades ago when he was still around. It was Ashland, he just couldn’t place the word’s meaning. Honestly, what he remembered of his father he could fill in a thimble and there’d still be room for fuck knows what else! Assumption and rumour usually— shit he’d always tried to bury— shit that he did not need to bring into this exchange.

“Hassour Zainsubani, I assume?” Teldryn asked, raising his eyebrow as the older mer nodded and gestured for him to take a seat opposite him.

“Yes, I am Hassour Zainsubani, may you bless and be blessed,” The mer smiled at him as he reached for the mouthpiece of his hookah, unhooking it from its stand and bringing it to his mouth.

“Ah— Teldryn Sero,” Teldryn stammered as he quickly took his seat, “I ah—”

Zainsubani exhaled a cloud of blue-tinged smoke before offering him use of the contraption, “And what is your business with me, Teldryn Sero? I do not wish to be rude, but I am at leisure and wish to be alone with my thoughts.”

Teldryn reached for the pipe closest to him and took a long drag, letting the sweet-smelling smoke fill his lungs. Some sort of blend of kreshweed, hackle-lo and heather that left him wanting. He found himself coughing a little as he exhaled, earning him a chuckle from the older Velothi.

“It is always funny when the youth try it,” Zainsubani smiled at him as he took another puff, “It is smoother than what we make back home.”

Teldryn reached instead for his case of cigarettes and placed one in his mouth, lighting it with the tip of his finger, “Nar, just prefer the imported stuff.”

The Velothi chuckled as Teldryn took a long drag from his cigarette, “You have travelled far then?”

Teldryn shrugged, “You could say that.”

“Far enough to sample what the Westerners have you offer, yes?” Zainsubani replied, pulling his waist-length, greying plait over his shoulder, “But you have business you wish to discuss, yes?”

“Ah yeah…” Teldryn mumbled as he reached for the newly purchased book of poetry and placed it in front of him, “I was told that it is customary amongst strangers to give gifts before discussing business. I was told that you have an interest in literature…ah—”

Zainsubani reached for the book that Teldryn had just placed between them, the smallest of sparks igniting in his grey-rimmed eyes as he read the book’s title, “Words of the Wind?”

“The Shopkeep said you were interested in—"

DAIMA EP.8 (SPOILER) Review/theories.

• Gotta gush about the fight, of course. Tamagami #3's reflexes & fighting instincts in general were top-notch/surprisingly sharp for someone who'd been standing around for years. The other two are surely no different. Being able to magically manipulate his hammer mjölnir style of course implies that Tamagamis #1+2 can/will do the same.

• I've enjoyed/appreciated all the nyoibo action thus far, but Goku sheathing it Future Trunks sword style was raw AF. & Immediately after using it to snap his opponent's weapon's hilt too!

• As I stated in a previous review, (EP.6) Goku has in fact acclimated to the weight of 3rd world's air.

• Goku's verbal response to Tamagami #3's red blasts leads me to believe they're ki blasts, which might imply that Neva has known about ki/ki manipulation this entire time, but has never shared this info nor taught a single demon about it all this time. (Maybe part of some sort of contingency/emergency plan?)

• Not sure if it only applies to #3, but while powering up, he let steam out of his body, similar to the way Buu does. Neat detail.

• #3's sudden surrender tells me that the fight itself was meant to test if the person who earns the dragon ball can keep it safe on their own while they go collect the rest, while the second test focuses on attentiveness. She could've also cloaked her presence with magic, too. Must have used teleportation magic to sneak around, keeping a safe distance from Buu's fight while waiting to pounce. (Kai-Kai?)

• We're introduced to a witch named "Marba". Based on the Majin "M" emblem that can be seen in the stained glass of her front door+the one on her outfit, which was even zoomed in on+ the fact she was the one who created Buu, (& the fact her name starts with "M") we can assume that the emblem was her's all along, so Bibidi (& by extension Babidi) straight up shamelessly appropriated it.

• Dr Arinsu admits to having constructed a Majin of her own a while ago, but it wasn't powerful enough to "beat her", which tells me she always wanted one powerful enough to to beat/assassinate previous Supreme Kings, but only now has the resources.

• Guess Toriyama didn't like his old idea of Majin Buu existing since time in memorial, & came up with an equally (if not a lil more) interesting origin. Marba, who despite being powerful enough to create a creature like Buu, just straight up didn't bother taking credit for him because she deemed him a failure, & instead let a reckless imbecile like Bibidi "use" & take credit for Buu. After asking Marba to make Buu for him, no less. So disrespectful, Bibidi.

• Majin Buu being so dangerous that entire races like Glinds & Namekians not only fled their home world, but outright abandoned their own Realm, is quite a compelling backstory for all parties involved. I view the fact that only "some" Glinds were killed a small miracle.

• Dr Arinsu sure loves her hover-hookah.

• Marba mentioned she "focused on controllability", so this new Majin might not be as strong as kid Buu, but surely still deadly. (& will hopefully have a personality) If even a powerful witch like her says that King Gohma isn't a pushover, then perhaps he rivaled Dabura's strength with pure destructive magic power.

• My theory about Dr Arinsu just using Goku & friends to gather the Demon Realm dragon balls through Glorio was completely correct.

• Buff red haired demon lady from Kadan's castle has fangs. I NEED TO KNOW HER NAME, TOEI. (& The name of the short haired demon lady, too.)

• Cute domesticated-Vegeta moment at the end there. Saiyan/Namek saga Vegeta would've just murdered Hybis & flown off to question random strangers.

• Marba's tree/cottage/floating island sure has pretty colors. Wouldn't mind hanging out in a VR Chat recreation of it. Play with the cauldron a little.

• Next EP looks like it's gonna be super cute, at least.
