#hood view placement fix

I'm making a new post but this is about me looking for a hood view placement fix for the bg japanese marble tree.

I managed to make a LOD90 default for it, but for some reason it only works in the main hood. See :

Main hood : fixed ! 😁

Uni & Downtown : not fixed ☹️

It's the same hood, all are residential lots of the same size, all are created after I placed my default/fix in my Downloads folder. I have not tested in any OFB subhood.

EDIT : I also tried to remove it from my Downloads folder and place it in the M&G>TSData>Res>Catalog>Bins folder, and still working in the main hood but not in UNI/Downtown.

Then also placed a copy in UNI>TSData>Res>Catalog>Bins and NL>TSData>Res>Catalog>Bins folders, but still the same.

I can't find any LOD90 meshes for that tree in the UNI and NL game files either so I'm stuck. If anyone has an idea of what's going on I'll be grateful. But I'm still investigating.

After the cruel scolding that was sure to be only the beginning of the harsh words you and Rio would face that night, Agatha drags the two of you back to her patrol car by your wrists. You stumbled over your feet, trying your hardest to keep up with your furious girlfriend; Meanwhile Rio dragged her feet along reluctantly, trying desperately to keep up her careless, tough exterior and get a rise out of the cop.

Rio is thrown into the passenger side of the car, her hair nearly caught in the door as Agatha slams it, leading you towards the back door.

“At least one of my sluts is eager to please… Keep it up and maybe you can get what you want tonight.” She shouts the last part, addressing you, but directing the comment towards your brattier counterpart, who was now fidgeting in the front seat.

Agatha gets in the car, starting it up and taking off on the short ride back to your shared home. Rio’s placement in the front of the car was meant to keep her in check, keep her in Agatha’s direct line of vision and in close reach for reprimand. Rio had different ideas of how to use her forced proximity.

Your older girlfriend’s breathing had just reached some sort of equilibrium, no longer audibly seething through her breaths alone, when Rio reached over the console and slid her hand into Agatha’s lap. Much to your horror, Agatha just laughs.

“You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into, doll. You have five seconds to take your hand and keep it to yourself before I decide you’ll be sleeping in the guest room for the next week.” Rio, of course, waits until the very end of those five seconds before dragging her hand back across Agatha’s lap, making sure to brush her covered core ever-so-slightly before bringing it back to her side of the console to pout. You shudder under the reflection of Agatha’s hooded gaze in the rear view mirror as she grinds her teeth down against each other in a fiery frustration.

The silence and tension grows more and more palpable as the drive comes to an end when Agatha throws the cruiser into park at the top of your driveway, right next to Rio’s precious bike. She wasn’t exactly being careful to swerve away from it.

Before you could even think of reaching for your door handle, it was thrown open and you and Rio were being forced into the home. You were at the front, being pushed into the house by Agatha’s right hand, which was tangled in your hair and gripping it into a ponytail. Rio was being dragged in the back by Agatha’s tight grip on her ear. If you didn’t know better, you’d be giggling at the way the slightly taller girl resembled a misbehaving child being scolded by her upset mother. If Rio knew better, she wouldn’t have acted like a misbehaving child.

It was clearly too late for this when Agatha practically tossed you two into the house, all in the same manner as you’d seen her do with her bags after a long day at work. She ran her tongue between her top teeth and her top lip as she looked you and your girlfriend up and down, almost as if deciding between a library of options for how to deal with the two of you.

“Both of you, go to my room now and be ready for me in the next minute… Y/N, pick something pretty out from my drawer, would you, hun?” With that, she had decided.

As you and Rio made your way into your bedroom and Rio made her way to the edge of the bed, you slid the drawer open and instinctively grabbed your favorite from the assortment, a small and quiet but powerful bullet that Agatha could control from her phone. You were hoping she’d use it on you again, but there was no point in asking once she walked in, because it would almost surely earn you the exact opposite.

She walks in to find you sitting on your heels at the same spot at the edge of the bed where Rio sat, manspreading and fidgeting with the seam on her shirt. She takes the small purple toy from your hands and kisses the top of your head, a chillingly gentle gesture in contrast with her bubbling anger that night. Her hand slips from the side of your jaw to the underside of your chin, tilting your head up just a bit so that you were looking up and meeting her eyes with your own. “Such a good choice, sweet girl.”

She then turns to Rio, who hasn’t yet given up her false tough demeanor. “Kiss her. How you were before I walked in early tonight. Pretend I’m not even here, and God help you if you hold back even the slightest bit.” With that, she sat down in the large armchair directly in the eye line from where you sat.

Rio smiles slyly and slides her hands into the back of your head, tangling her digits in your hair as she meets your lips with her own. Your own hands, shaking, find her hips as she deepens the kiss and straddles you as you’re still sitting on your knees with rigid posture that reflects your nervousness outwardly. When you finally melt into her touch the slightest bit, losing yourself in her confident dominance, you hear Agatha stand and are suddenly enveloped in her shadow as Rio is yanking away from you.

Or rather, being yanked away. You note Agatha’s grip around Rio’s waves as she speaks in an even more gravely voice than usual, “That was your final chance to prove yourself as something more than a greedy bitch. Get in the chair.”

She swallows, devoid of any of the dominance from seconds prior, and climbs into the chair Agatha had just risen from. The latter takes Rio’s seat next to you, but lifts you onto her lap with your right leg slotted between her own, your center falling onto the top of her right thigh. Once you could see clearly again as the rush of her rough fingers around your waist simmered the smallest bit, you realized you were sitting on something… hard? and let out an involuntary whisper.

Agatha looks down at where your legs meet and then back at you, grinning like the devil, as Rio writhes in her seat. Agatha immediately clocks the movement from over your shoulder. “If you ever want me to make you come again, you’ll sit still and enjoy the show I’m so generously giving you after your disgusting displays tonight.” Rio reluctantly complies. She returns her attention to you, now digging her fingers into your hips with bruising force, and guides you ever-so-slightly back and forth against the pressure below you. “Agatha?” you breathe out.

“Yeah, angel?” The title almost makes you forget what was supposed to follow your initial words. The hardness below you reminds you quickly. “Are you… did you wear the strap to work?” you nearly whisper, the question barely audible to your other girlfriend, who sat still now and held onto every word from you and the woman below you uttered. “No, baby, try again.”

It seems as if all the blood in your body rushes to your face as you realize that what you were grinding down onto wasn’t the strap you’d been mercilessly filled with time after time, but her patrol weapon. It was mind-blowingly filthy and embarrassing to you, which brought both Agatha and Rio more pleasure than any other act the three of you had carried out together could. “Keep moving those pretty hips, hun. Don’t shy away from being a slut now, it’s a little too late for that.” You bit your lip hard enough to taste the same metallic tang from before you left the same room earlier that night as you hid your blushing face in the crook of the cop’s neck.

“Hey, come back, angel, I’ve got a question for you.” You look up reluctantly, dreading the eye contact you knew she would demand as you spoke. “Yes ma’am.” She chuckled lowly at this, “Oh, what, now you wanna be good for me? Nice try. What I was wondering…. was if you think our greedy girl over there should get to join us.” You look over your shoulder at the desperate woman, your eyes glossing over at the sight of her thighs pressed together so tightly they could surely suffocate you if your head found its way between them as it so often did. You turn back to Agatha and offer only a nod, not trusting your breath to stay loyal to you.

Agatha curled a finger, beckoning your girlfriend over and watching as she scrambled to the bed. “Now, Y/N, do you think I should use this” she held up the toy you’d previously picked out from her collection “on Rio here? Think it’d be fun to see her crumble under the stimulation and forget all about her little stone-cold act?” You nodded quicker than you knew possible. “No, I need words.” You swallow and breathe in shakily, hips still moving on their own accord. “Yes. Please, wanna see.” She just smiles and lifts you off of her leg as she readies her attention on the other girl.

“I think she has to earn it.”

Stalker. Progress. Part 4.

I dedicated an entire day towards finishing the modelling and trying to get original textures and assets for the stalker character: It didn't go well. So I decided to improvise.

Last time I was working on the shoes. I checked the overall quality of the mesh, and once I was happy with the low poly model, I subdivided the entire mesh and began sculpting.

For the shoes, I combined all the techniques that I learned through the course: I sculpted simple folds, then applied a tiny bit of generated folds for the view - and then finally used alpha brushes to add special folds and details to the shoe. Before applying the references, I looked at the original images to understand how to place cloth details: I figured I should have added more details to the back side of the shoe and in the centre of the shoe while avoiding too many details at the front and sides of the boot.

For the Shoulder pads - I just decided to apply some leather sculpt for the belt, as I think it will look more defiantly together with the metallic part, and do some simple brushwork to add a texture to the surface, and mayde some damage.

Once I was done with the sculpting, I began adapting the whole mesh for baking. I created low poly models by resetting the subdivision modifiers while still maintaining an optimised amount of vertices through the whole mesh (which is around the 95k verts, excluding the head mesh).

Preparing the low poly meshes was not that hard - I just had to duplicate the model and project the verts towards the mesh, and fix any rare problems that the projections make.

Making the hood was the hardest task since the existing multi-resolutions were too small or too big, so I had to pick the lowest level of a subdivision and manually optimise the mesh. On top of that - projection does not like corners. So I had to manually fix the problem, thankfully I just needed to drag them around the model.

In terms of UV unwrapping - I thought about hiding the seams as much as possible, but then I was suggested a Subsctance Painter tutorial video about how it's not that hard to hide seams, and I decided to give it a shot. This is a worthy idea, since relaxed seam placement allowed me to cover much of the mesh into the UV maps.

Now, we are ready to work on the textures.

The first problem that I have encountered with - is the fact that the original face model works quite differently from what I have seen. It has many material groups (probably used to achieve various effects in UE5) - but some of the materials do not really have any face data in them, all the meshes have a weird topology level and finally - the unwrap quality is way off.

While I understood the purpose of the design of this model - since it has advanced rigging capabilities, and several effects happening in the Unreal Engine. However, I really struggled with understanding the intended way of working with the model outside of the Unreal Engine. While I still had some time to figure out what am I doing wrong, I decided to watch some tutorials.

After watching the tutorials made by Bakyt Kalmuratov (2023) and Han3D (2024), I figured that I just exported textures from the Unreal Engine in the wrong way, and corrected myself with the aid of the tutorials. I also figured that it can be easy to extract some textures, while may be hard to extract others.

Originally, I wanted to insert the MetaHuman mesh into the Substance Painter, in order to understand if I do the exports properly and also apply some simple effects. But after having various problems with the import (probably since I deleted the rig and changed the mesh by automatically removing duplicates, thus involuntarily editing the UV and mesh data), I decided to scrap that and work on it during the UE export.

Meeting Ramattra

# I love everything about this new hero already. I am the MOST hype. I have seen that others are going off about him as well. Couldn’t help myself. 

   Realistically, omnics aren’t very different from humans at all. We both ponder our own existence and share free will, clearly. We also similarly might be faithful to a creator or divine entity of some kind. (Ugh, I have been so existential lately so don’t get me started.) Like others here, I find Ramattra fascinating because of this sort of antagonistic ideology that all humans are horrible and nothing good could come of working with them. Which is fair. 

Have you seen the state of the world?

   Ramattra is rough around the edges, for sure. I don’t believe you can just fix a person who has experienced potential trauma and I’m not a fan of that way of thinking. However, I do think that time and some nurturing can soothe the hurt in others.

   Being on opposite sides is a good place to start. Surrounding yourself with beings that hold different world views is insightful and important to building strong relationships. No one is going to agree on everything and that isn’t always so bad as it can bring people closer in a strange way.

- You work as a behind-the-scenes operative at Overwatch; mostly as a radar systems engineer. Simply put, you check for any interference whether that be from above, below, or all around the surrounding base.

- Sojourn decided she liked you enough to put you to work in the east to work under some notable tech specialists.

- Despite that, a lot of this job involved a lot of late, dull nights by your lonesome staring at your monitors and just making sure nothing peculiar was happening on point. Of course the pay was phenomenal but your career really made you question what all the math was about in order to put yourself in this dimly lit cell of an operating room, twiddling your thumbs.

- One night on the job, you find yourself drifting off when suddenly you get a notification from your radar systems and jolt forward to confront an odd reading. There’s a feint red dot signaling an unknown entity in the surrounding area.

- This wasn’t that surprising as you would occasionally encounter one small dot and it would end up being an airdrop for supplies or something nonthreatening. However, that was in the early day usually and you would have your other coworkers with you to handle it as you were technically still a newbie on base.

- So to be honest, you’ve never actually gotten to this point in the job before and didn’t know how to handle this situation professionally. “Well.. fuck,” you mutter to yourself and decide that you should investigate regardless.

- Grabbing your jacket, you put on your ‘I know what I’m doing face’ and hop out of the operation deck to see what this potential intruder wants.

- This base in particular is a bit odd in it’s placement. It is a bit out in the middle of nowhere in Europe where it is typically raining which normally makes the radar quite hard to catch correctly anyway. 

- You secretly hope that that’s the problem this time.

- Upon exiting the base, the doors seal behind you and you pull out your handheld monitor from your jacket where it had been waiting before. With a few clicks, your small radar starts scanning the area as best it can in this windy atmosphere.

- You pull your hood up and pull out your flashlight to light your way through the darkness. Pressing forward, you squint to protect your eyes from the raindrops that threaten to impact them. 

- In the distance you see a low red glow where your radar is navigating towards and decide that this must be the interference. You raise your flashlight in the direction of the glow. 

- “Hello?” you try to project but the combination of the cold wind and pure nervousness made it difficult to do so. Your throat felt dry. “State your name,” you hear in response as you finally come face to face with an omnic kneeling on the ground. 

- You are taken aback first by how firm he was in speech but quickly realize there is another metal form lying lifeless before him. Disregarding his request from before, your initial feelings of fear turn to concern and it is evident in your tone “,What happened here?”

- He collects the body from the Earth and turns away from you in silence but doesn’t walk away. 

- “Unless this was your doing, this matter does not concern you, human.”

- He remains still as if expecting a confession or otherwise. You get a hint of an accusing tone in his statement and feel the desire to get defensive. 

- “I can assure you that I had no hand in this. I’m an engineer at Overwatch; I’m just trying to assist anywhere that I can,” you say as you put your device back into your pocket. You feel your stomach drop when you realize that you mentioned Overwatch at all. They didn’t exactly have the best reputation right now so it’s not a great idea to go throwing that around.

- You may have just signed your death warrant.

- He scoffs “, I’m not at all surprised at that. Of all the people to go around playing hero for the public, Overwatch holds the worst of them.”

- Trying to divert the conversation back to the matter at hand you shake your head “,I-I’m sorry, I really am just here to help. What are you doing with the body?” He holds pause for a moment. You notice his shoulders fall a bit as he sighs. “I’m collecting them to properly lay them to rest as well as all the others that your kind mercilessly slaughters,” he finishes as he starts to walk ahead.

- You feel your heart pang with a guilt as your expression grows softer. “I know this isn’t much but I know a peaceful, nice area we could bury them,” you say, half expecting him to just keep walking off in annoyance.

- He stops and pauses again but this time he hesitantly turns to you. It is hard to navigate at this hour and in this weather as it is. He hadn’t exactly thought that far ahead it seemed.

- “I... okay,” he finally says.

- You smile gently as he turns to follow your lead. “It’s (y/n), by the way,” you turn back towards him as you guide the two.

- “Ramattra,” he responds, but it sounds familiar to you. He spoke one last time and you almost barely heard it “,Thank you.” 

- The two of you continued to march on in silence.

Thoughts on 7.0 changes - second combat style, new UI, etc. (part 1/?)

While with story my thoughts are conflicted and will change with time, I have somewhat better time with other changes. Of course in 2 days I haven't tried absolutely every new feature, but some of them already left an impression. No story talk, so no spoilers, but if you want to experience all of that by yourself, my thoughts are going under the cut (also bc the post is long).

First, and one of the best changes, Clash of Destiny is back! Pretty much everyone who played already know, but hey I enjoy so much more than End in the Stars. Don't get me wrong, previous theme wasn't bad and grew on me, but Clash of Destiny is a classic.

New interface

I don't mind it that much. It feels a bit out of place with the rest of UI, but nothing that would make my life miserable. A couple of fixes, and it's fine. Font is definitely better than before.

One general complaint about new character sheet and inventory - I don't like that when I open them, the game freezes for a moment. It's never been a problem with old versions (aside from Legacy window). Maybe not a huge problem, but irritates me.

Inventory confused me: placement changed, 8x10 changed to 10x8 (which will take some getting used to), blue squares are too bright and hurt my eyes, but it's not all bad. Not having to open both inventory and character sheet to change gear is unusual, but convenient.

Character sheet has a couple of things I find uncomfortable - details on stats in separate window, the way our characters are shown (can't see outfits well, view from above is weird), chosen abilities in skill tree aren't highlighted well (can barely tell which ones I chose). I think those can be fixed fairly easy (maybe aside from stats window, it's more of personal preference)

Abilities window is fine, got used to it quickly.

New customization options

I haven't explored new character creation much, but I was looking forward to new hairstyles (didn't test myself, but saw screenshots and videos from other players). Had a character or two who could use those, but there were specific hairstyles I was hoping for, and I didn't see them, so it seems not all hair options made it to live servers, which is slightly disappointing, but again, nothing infuriating. New complexion options are fine, though I heard some of them don't make sense on chiss and mirialans (facial hair I mean).

Shared tagging

Another feature I was looking forward to, since it would make completing heroics in open areas a lot faster. As I was progressing with galactic seasons, I did a couple of heroics on Dromund Kaas. 3 out of 5 require killing mobs in open area to progress, so it was good to test shared tagging. It works! No need to group, no fear of accidentally stealing mobs, no need to wait for mobs to respawn. I never completed heroics on DK so fast before.

Galactic seasons 2

After seeing rewards from GS 2 I got interested in participating. Decorations look good enough (especially monitors on a wall), weapons are very nice, I really want to get them (aside from maybe dualsabers, not my cup of tea).

I like the change from 2 dailies and 2 weeklies to 1 daily and 10 weeklies (and you only have to complete 7, after that they get locked out). Instead of worrying about logging every day and do dailies so I get rewards in time, I can gain levels by completing weeklies any day (say weekend) and not worry too much about falling behind.

At first weeklies seemed like a slog, but I completed 5 weeklies and 1 daily season objective in 2 days and got 6 levels in reward track. Feels a lot better then season 1.

Second combat style

One of main things people, including me, were excited about in 7.0. I already made a post about possible second combat styles for my characters, and some of them got it today (because switching and arranging quickbars is a bit tedious).

Jedi Knight finally with double-bladed lightsaber, just as I intended for Ollin. (plus armor from cometic items vendor, wanted this chestpiece with hood down for a long time). Going with Infiltration because it has more lightsaber animations.

Shailla can finally be a healer with double-bladed lightsaber (obviously I can't heal with double-bladed lightsaber, but having Shadow and Sage on the same character is better than having 2 separate characters).

Since I have 2 versions of Jett in game I could roll with 2 new combat styles, but since there's a small possibility that new combat styles might be released in future (hoping for melee tech users with blades and all that) I only chose one. Operative is fun and all, but Powertech seemed like a more fitting choice: it's originally tied to BH, so it's not out of place (burn baby burn). Still deciding on which spec would be best, for now it's Advanced prototype because of many different tools.

Auletta can now use her very expensive pretty lightsaber for more than just show in game! Just as with Jett, still can't decide which spec would be better - Vengeance is too acrobatic for Auletta, but it has little laugh when using abilities (and Auletta chuckling during fight is definitey in character) and more different lightsaber animations; Rage isn't acrobatic, which is good, plus uses the Force more often, but it has a second jump (and 2 is too much for Auletta), and there's only one good animation with lightsaber.

Elixess can put her training from Ascendancy to use in game while still being the best gunslinger in the galaxy. Operative is a perfect choice - little chuckle during fight, poisons, knives and cool looking rifle.

Colishan is now able to show his descent to the Dark Side in game, going from Sage to Sorcerer. Actually, he has both because he doesn't have DS level, but I have dark V legacy achievement, so can choose Sorcerer as second combat style.

Played Shailla and Elixess with both combat styles and I gotta say, it's refreshing not being stuck with just one style. Of course I'd have to maintain subscription to have access to both, but it's still neat. And thank whoever is responsible for luck for loadouts working properly for me at least, saving choices, gear and placement of abilities on quickbars.

As you can probably tell, I'm enjoying this feature.

NCT YUTA IDEAL TYPE ASTROLOGY & TAROT

Note: Yuta has no known birth time so I’ve based this mostly on his Venus and Mars sign placements. This only gives us one piece of the overall astrological puzzle and of course doesn’t take into consideration how his upbringing and life experiences have influenced what he considers attractive.

Venus in Scorpio & Mars in Sagittarius

Venus in Scorpio is incredibly passionate and intense when it comes to love so Yuta will need someone who is on the same level. Someone sensual who will love him wholeheartedly and who is loyal and unafraid of commitment. Devotion is the one thing he values above all else. He definitely needs someone who he can take his time getting to know. His Mars in Sagittarius wants to be kept on its toes while his Venus in Scorpio loves a mystery, so his ideal type would be someone who he will be constantly learning about. Someone with emotional depths for him to dive into. Yuta would 100% prefer to “lead” a relationship so his ideal partner would be someone who shares that view. But they can’t be a pushover! Both Sagittarius and Scorpio love authenticity and he would want his partner to be unafraid to be their natural selves. Also he would love a bit of back and forth banter. Someone who is able to (teasingly!) call him out on his bullshit.

Physically, Yuta would be attracted to someone with captivating eyes and a dark, hooded gaze. And legs! He would find long, shapely legs/hips/thighs really attractive. In terms of fashion I don’t think he would have any major preferences - Sagittarius is very easy going and Scorpio places an emphasis on an emotional attraction/connection. HOWEVER if someone had a slightly sexy or alternative aspect to their appearance/clothes - leather, chains, chokers, velvet, heels, tattoos etc - it would most definitely catch his attention.

Okay this is a very ~mysterious~ reading which is only fitting for Mr Scorpio. First things first, Yuta wants love BADLY. HOWEVER I also get the sense that he potentially has an interest in people he knows he has no chance with - maybe they are already in a relationship, or he knows they don’t have feelings for him. This very much ties into the “love is pain” idea that many people with Venus in Scorpio have. Mars in Sagittarius can also be super competitive and enjoys the chase so that could also play a part in this. 

Regardless of his Scorpio placements Yuta needs someone more in line with his Sagittarius Mars. Someone optimistic, honest, adventurous and care-free. Someone who he can learn from and explore the world with. Balance is definitely a part of what Yuta needs in a partner. His Venus and Mars are so different (fixed water vs mutable fire) so his ideal type is someone who possesses this same duality. In the wake of a corrupt and uncertain time loop, the Thin Man entertains the prospect of looking after his younger-self. All children are independent to a fault and self-sufficient in a chaotic, unhinged world eager to erase their existence. Those that endure are hardwired for navigating the malicious terrain, and become especially leery of its traps, pitfalls, and especially the adults. Mono is no exception.

Despite being the same entity, the Thin Man and Mono are polarized opposites. The two now struggle to coexistence in a timeline that is cruel and petty, and does not forgive transgressions against certain ethereal laws. The Thin Man does not feel adequate to the task; whereas Mono's greatest drive is to outrun the misfortune that has plagued his entire existence.

2 _ 1 _ The Patience of Singularity

First

 The last he saw of the girl was her shaded face, under the hood of the clever raincoat. He tried to read the expression, understand what happened. In a blink She was gone.

 And he kept falling.

 But WHY?

 The air whipped past his shoulders and thrashed his coat, faster and faster through the unstoppable descent. Darkness boiled around him, crowding out the last scrap of light he would ever see in his short life. As certain as time ticked onward, unhindered by events and mortal struggles; nothing could negate the reality of his situation.

 She let go. Tore Her hand out of his grasp, and he was still falling.

 At some point in the longest, darkest, most painful plummet in all his little world, he knows nothing. Mono only knows that he was falling, then somewhere he was not, but now he is mostly awake. He was not dead or hurt, only asleep or unaware for a short time. Somehow, he survived what should have shattered him, and it felt as if a force beyond his meager grasp cackled at the pain his unscathed plunge now brought. A cruel trick, wicked and mean.

 Yes, he was all right. Oh, how he wished that were not so.

 The floors and walls writhe and churn, the air boundless in humid reek, thick with the sour stench coating this awful the place. It was alive - with massive and puffy eyes glaring out of inflamed tissue, searching, hungry, likely insatiable.

 The boy leapt up and scrambled across rolling hills of the squirming landscape, his feet generated a flat plap-plap with frantic, erratic movement when he charged one way or stumbled another, to no gain. A thick film of sweat clung to the greasy surface, preventing him from scaling in numerous directions that might’ve been safe-eR. At best they were not, but the restriction maddened him and heightened his fear. The manner in which every visible surface flexed with purpose, it was impossible to deny it was not guiding him to somewhere.

 While running with all the turmoil he could muster, he swept his view toward the above. The loathsome air made his eyes water, that was the only reason why they stung and hurt. Made his nose prick and itch, the back of his throat tightened. A little whine trilled out, but he stifled it. Tried to. His presence was known, everything here knew that he was. It didn’t matter if he screamed or shouted, wailed into the gloomiest most isolated depths. Nothing would find him here; nothing that wasn’t already aware.

 She did this. Left him. Let him… tore away. But….

 Nothing but darkness persisted between the churning fabric, and somewhere within the wriggling depths, more of the flesh rolled inward. Folds upon waves descending. Closer. Groaning.

 Snickering.

 Time was nonexistent. He didn’t know for how far he went, let alone where he was going. What he should hope to reach. He had no idea where he was, let alone what this place was. This… this was the Signal Tower, wasn’t it? The same Signal Tower he wanted to challenge, so they could fix the world, cleave it from all the nightmares and horror which robbed him of friends. All of them. This was that very same p̸̨̋l̵̝̖̕ã̷̲̳̈c̷̖͋͒ͅẽ̷̙!

 The reflection crushed him, almost as much as it devastated him when She wrenched her hand out of his grasp. It was no grand machine, there was nothing to smash or break, no button nor a fuse. Just the gross mass of raw tissue, eyes, teeth. The putrid bloated body of a creature lodged into a tall building, a living and breathing thing that desired nothing but to feed, and constantly. Devour mindlessly whatever was cast into its pit without thought, no remorse.

 Everything he did, all the trials endured, the pain suffered; all of it so he could chance saving the most important person in the world. Risked everything, because he couldn’t live with himself if he abandoned her to this horrible fate. Only to wind up here in the pit of famine and emptiness.

 Left for dead. Abandoned. Unwanted. And he didn’t understand why. What to reason? If there was reason, and she didn’t plan this from the very beginning. None of this made sense. He didn’t understand. Why?! Why any of it!? Why stay with, if not want?

 Odd things crossed his path as he wandered aimless, lost and miserable. Items that might’ve elicited hope, if not for their bizarre situations. Partially buried window frames, lamps of every shape. The stray shreds of a door, sinking slowly. Scattered cement chunks, all fading into the pulsating tissue. Various bits and pieces of television parts, but nothing substantial, nothing he could make use of. Not that he needed a television, not that he….

 At last, he stumbled upon a chair. Unmoved and bothered by its precarious placement in the heaving flesh. As prior to the other items he dismissed, he left it and kept searching for somewhere that was not here. No matter how far he went, the direction he stumbled into.

 The chair would always be waiting.

 The flesh surrounding it, anchored beneath it – grinning – beseeching him. Safety. Sanctuary. Promises that a child would die for.

 Bugling walls lurched inward, the air became stifling and burdened by the foul odor, he couldn’t deny the chair. He couldn’t risk rejecting it a… however many times this was.

 Mono clawed his way across the steep mound and hoisted himself onto the flat, grainy, solid surface. He stood there at the summit, as a dozes eyes bore out of the rippling walls. Blinking, oozing, sweltering boils that swiveled and gawked at the child – a child unwilling to lie down and submit. They eyes rolled and the walls caved inward, chewing through the pitiful little space untainted yet, sipping greedily at the child.

 The whole chamber flashed in a surge of white, so blinding and intense it seared his bones within his skin.

 With a jolt the Thin Man realized he was no longer in that tiny cement room, secluded away from the world and all its petty complexities. He was no longer biding away the years and waiting, watching a door he barely acknowledged aside from face it. For whatever positive it allowed, he had survived all encounters with his child self. As perplexing as each of those incidents was, the smaller one did not fair the better for it.

 The rain drummed gently on the remaining glass of the rooms window, curious light distortions tinged the corroded walls. By the illumination piercing the clouds, it must have been midday; the hour was certainly not dead of night.

 A bowl of water and some scraps of food always stayed on the windowsill. A habit he came unto, while Mono recovered from another incident utilizing his… powers. That might’ve been the closest the child was willing to come to harm the Thin Man – ironically, harming his own self more than the shadow that was subconsciously drawn to his whereabouts. A fact the Thin Man felt deep shame of, given how driven the child was to avoid him, and the volatile reaction when revealed how hopeless that effort was.

 Speek of he, and he shall materialize.

 There is the child, slinking in from the doorway as if he had committed some heinous crime. His only crime seemed to be existing where he wasn’t wanted.

 From where he slouched beside the dresser, the Thin Man inched his hat up a fraction. He silently observed Mono ark out beyond his range and padded over to the furthest side of the open drawer. Likely out doing another walk of the apartment. He did those periodically, when his mind couldn’t settle. Around the small room, a few of the treasures sat out. Though, the child never took to any of them – not like the bear, which he arguably favored. Some of those gifts the Thin Man put into the drawer, even if Mono didn’t seem to care for them, the boy didn’t reject them irrefutably.

 The child wound up into his coat and propped his chin on the rim of the dresser drawer, gaze fixed on the Thin Man. As always, it unnerved him. This incessant watching. Waiting. Expectant. Reluctant to make speek, and whatever speek remained limited and simplified. He – the child – was always so proud of speek, of making his voice. It was a rare day when he could get Mono to respond to a question, but the child seemed to be coming around. In no great haste, but at least at some choice times he could hear the little voice.

 With a crackly sigh, the Thin Man leaned over and reached across the open drawer. The child twisted at his grasp and tried to get away, but the Thin Man looped his fingers around the torso and plucked him out. For whatever reason Mono resisted, and that was… odd. The child wasn't typically opposed to being lifted or moved, and more than once he had to deal with the child knotted into his side like some little... needy thing. He didn't understand this sudden contrast, or the reluctance he was experiencing now. That was all it was, mediocre objection. He had seen firsthand a panicked and terror stricken Mono, writhing upon the brink of utter desperation. Thankfully, this was not that. Annoyed more than anything.

 The Thin Man shifted the child between his palms, keeping his fingers curled carefully in case the little one tried nipping or succeeded in squirming loose. Once Mono accepted he wasn't getting away, his flailing ceased. That was better, he could view the face proper now – animated, curious, a little put off at being disturbed. So much better than lost to a coma.

 He held out hope he’d find something… familiar, in the child’s face. Someone he’d seen while staring into a muddy, rainbow lashed puddle, or the corroded refracted distortions in shattered mirrors. A ghost of a reflection in a foggy window, as he gazed out toward the Signal Tower awaiting endlessly in the yonder distance. He studied the eyes, the blank expression, searching for a spark of familiarity in those strange depths. Who was this child? Why was there such a... disconnection? No kindred tether existed between he and this boy. The face was vacant, devoid of something so instrumental to his youth. He would almost wager he – the elder – was disenchanted.

 Mono coiled his arms around his head and leaned back as far as his spine would allow. The Thin Man debated shifting the thin arms aside, but cast out the thought. The child didn’t like being the subject of such scrutiny, and the little body was quivering.

 The Thin Man leaned away from the wall and set Mono back into his corner of the drawer. The child cringed down, tightening the grip on his head when the Thin Man withdrew his hands. The Thin Man settled one of the plush toys beside Mono, and pulled a shirt sleeve over the smaller one so he could be hidden until he was ready to emerge.

 In a glitchy surge, the Thin Man stood tall. He paced out of the room, in a deep bow as always. He’s aware of the haunted face peering out from beneath the shirt, but reframed from acknowledging it.

 This was all his doing. Every ounce of it, whether intentional or not, regardless intent. Everything that came upon the child, was due to his masterful deviation from the uncontestable loop.

 What always has been, shall always be.

 An accidental misstep unhinged everything he thought he knew of the endless coiling cycle. What he knew, from his own experience of the cycle – when he was a child, racing recklessly in the same steps as his predecessor, and he before him. Etcetera, etcetera, et-cetera….

 He wouldn’t watch the child fall from a measly train cart, he couldn’t bear to witness his final plunge into the very same pit he was cast into, when he naively leapt and trusted without doubt. Without choice. He whisked Mono from that very banishment, yet he began to question if that was the most benevolent impulse. The boy knew by the Thin Man’s meddling, he was averted from certain destruction, but never saw entirely what he was salvaged from. Knew nothing of the horrible fate awaiting him in the pit, a fate worse than the certain death he feared.

 But was it so?

 Through his unintentional first intervention, he managed to deprive Mono of the initial drive and resolve he gained, which would equip his younger self to contest the Thin Man at the doors to the Signal Tower. Thus, the Thin Man’s uncontested fate was for the time postponed.

 Out of curiosity he accompanied the child to the Tower, with no promise that the stolen friend could be found. The problem being, the Thin Man knew Mono would stumble upon Her. Would succeed in tearing Her from the influence of the Tower, and liberate his friend from imprisonment. After everything he overcame, the pain he suffered, and during his most desperate time of need – the child would be cast away into the void. No rhyme or reason. It was arguably the coldest, most ruthless form of treachery.

 In the Thin Man’s second intervention, he snatched Mono from the pit, tore the child from the sanctuary he was promised. A prison for his capabilities. A cage for his rage. A shelter which would allow him to age and flourish in peace, beyond the reach of an ugly world that did not deserve such a resilient soul.

 Through his aimless wanderings of the city, mindful of items and treats that Mono might take to, the Thin Man did reflect how unfair all of this was to his child-self. How contradictory it was that he was so quick to accept his fate in the Signal Tower, yet expected Mono – unaware of the true nature of the haven he was whisked from – to resume pace in the unforgiving, petty and cruel world. Children were capable and self-sufficient, to a fault. But the boy remained confused, decimated by betrayal, hunted ruthlessly, and perhaps unfit to deal with the world and these certainties established.

 The Thin Man doesn’t even recall what he initially sought when he attended Mono's quest to the Tower. His presence was not necessary, so long as the child arrived as scheduled. The paradox continued, binding the loop – for whatever reason, the child never leaves the Signal Tower; he is sheltered, he is saved from the world, and the world is safe from him. As of yet, Mono remained cloaked from the truth of his paradoxical destiny. The life sentence awaiting at the Tower.

 In the distance, the Signal Tower loomed. The Thin Man stood at a window within a vapor of smog and sizzling particles, observing the impassive monolith through mostly intact glass. Tumescent clouds swirled the spire, as if the rainfall evaporated before hitting the surface of the unnatural structure. It seemed to sway and leer like cradle, mocking the figure studying it miles and miles away, hidden in another uninspired, mostly normal structure.

 His presence alone nearly killed the boy. Nothing in his possession and no item he could dredge up, would be enough for this… boy, he didn’t know. Yet Mono appeared very anxious by the prospect of his departure. He didn’t understand. Mono was repelled to him, while at the same time tormented by his absence. What was he meant to do? If he was not dubious for his chances of survival, he might consider returning Mono to the Tower himself. Regardless the fate awaiting him, when the boy assumed his role. The potential existed that Mono might even follow him to the place, without question. Or, if he explained the situation. If. If the child trusted him.

 The Thin Man was no fool. The child didn’t trust him in the slightest. Merely, accepted his proximity.

 Delivering the child was an option. The easiest solution by far. One to considered, before the irreversible happened. He didn’t… if it was even possible, and the worst came about, he couldn’t carry on existing if the child was…. Mono deserved better.

 Or, he could look after the smaller one himself, for the time. That was pure lunacy, a child and an adult coexisting. What would that even be? He wasn’t meant to be a part of any child’s life, much less his younger-self. He was not equipped for this debacle, the whole situation was doomed. Mono didn’t need him, nor protection (maybe from his self). The whole drama of if the child was receptive to remaining in his company, was another matter entirely. He was disinterested in chasing after the boy, given how that went when he wasn’t even trying to locate Mono.

 No easy answer existed. And in the heart of the city, in the distance, out there, its beacon light blazing through and through the storm – the Signal Tower waited. It only needed to wait, looming above the city, promising everything but relinquishing no solace. A snare with irresistible bait – unavoidable certainty.

 After a long, endless trek through the city and nothing to show for it, the Thin Man returned to the desolate little area where he stashed the child. The other apartment rooms, abandoned, and nothing to spare in necessities, he passed languidly as he made the trudge to the one door to the furthest end of the corridor. As always, the door is unlatched, should the child decide for himself to leave and go to wherever his heart desired. Anything could break in, but enough windows are available within for Mono to make his escape.

 No such event has transpired. The whole living space appeared abandoned, but once he ventured to the apartments secluded end and the desk room within, he discovered the location of the child. For whatever reason, Mono is trying to hoist himself up onto the desks top. Nothing of child interest is stashed there, aside from interesting curios and a few books he elected on a bored whim.

 Upon alert of his reappearance, the boy scrubbed the mission and let himself fall all the way to the floor. The desk was not low, but it was not a height that would harm a child. In a flash, he vanished under the table somewhere.

 The Thin Man wasn't paying attention. He sat down at the chair and propped his legs on the desk, trying to remind himself why he didn't just shut that door. Then again, remind himself not to dismiss the child with shut doors, and to permit some association if Mono was so inclined. And then come to regret that all in the same instant.

 A meek tug pried at his coat from the side, and he had to restrain the glare he wanted to inflict. At times the child was brash, and that ounce of defiance exhausted him so.

 Mono inched along the chair leg as he would a storm gutter, and reached high enough to snag the Thin Man's suit end. With this leverage, he fitted his feet upon the chair seat, then hoisted himself up to the Thin Man's midsection. The child kept his sight locked on the man in the hat, for signs of hostility or intolerance. When none are revealed, Mono crawled up as if enduring a crafty scheme and nestled into the Thin Man's coat. He was a little out of breath following the exertion, and his coiled shape trembled.

 The Thin Man tentatively reached over—

 It didn't take much to spook an anxious child. What was meant as a placating touch, was evidently deemed as something else entirely by Mono. The barest brush, and the child launched off the Thin Man and crashed to the floor. Stunned, the Thin Man sat up a little but reframed from uncoiling completely out of his posture. He glanced down in time to see the coat tail snap out of sight beneath the table. Once again, he reset his view to the doorway and leaned up, only at the instant the coat flittered out of sight. 

 No insight, no comprehension or suggestion existed to give due directions into this utter nonsense. He was not up to this, whatever it was. He flat-out did not understand, what was he meant to do?

 He pressed his hand over his eyes and hissed through the vibrating particles. It could be the child liked to torture him with random bits and unknowns. Who could say? They were devious little things at times.

Rowan knew he should stop staring before she noticed.

Aelin arrived to class earlier than usual, a rare occurrence for her, and seated herself in the farthest row from her normal seat. The new placement was a message, loud and clear, how unwilling she was to talk to him—let alone explain herself. The hood of her sweatshirt covered a better part of her face and she tugged it forward every so often, hiding her left cheek from view like she had that evening at the diner when he walked out.

She looked the same as ever—he didn't know why he expected otherwise.

He couldn't keep his attention from her, no matter how hard he tried. Aelin didn't look at him the whole week except when she slammed the project file she had finished herself on his desk two days after their arguement.

Dorian had an arm around her shoulder. He whispered something in her ear and she laughed out loud—too loud, even.

For a moment, her face scrunched up in a wince, the smile faltered as her hand shot up to the hidden cheek. Then she caught herself and fixed her expression fast enough that Rowan wasn't sure he had imagined it until he noticed the frown on Dorian's face.

He leaned forward to catch snippets of their conversation. "...still think you should tell... unsafe, move in with..." Dorian's face grew more serious with each word. Perhaps it was no business of Rowan's but he noticed Aelin's tense shoulders, a suddenly rigid and defensive posture that he couldn't resist trying to listen.

"I know I have to... he sleeps all day, not bothering... few more months."

The two of them quieted down when the teacher entered. Rowan couldn't stop thinking about that half-known conversation he listened to.

A week passed; Aelin didn't bother to talk to him. Rowan's pride refused to let him surrender. It didn't stop him from wishing they could talk.

He watched from his seat in the school cafeteria as she talked to her friends, loud and proud. She never looked his way but sometimes when Rowan saw those littlest of twitches in her lips when he stared at her, as if she knew he was looking. He shook the idea away. Whatever they had been—friends, acquaintances, group partners—it was over now.

The sooner Rowan accepted that, the better it would be for all.

Another two days later, Rowan found himself in Cairn's office. He'd been accepted into the team out of nowhere after more than two years worth of applications and requests.

Rowan knew who made that happen.

He couldn't sleep that night. When he closed his eyes, she was all he saw. He tossed and turned, hoping to drown out the pleas she had made of him, the way her voice sounded so little when she asked him to let her explain, to at least let her talk. He'd been so mad when after an hour of waiting, he saw she'd finally arrived only to flirt with the waiter. And maybe it wasn't about her being irresponsible at all. Maybe he'd been so angry at seeing her flirt with that gods damned asshole—Sam Cortland—that Rowan overreacted.

Tomorrow, he promised himself, he'd fix this and they'd be friends again.

Aelin was absent the next day, and the next day and the next.

Rowan assumed she must have had some reason the first two days. The third day, he sat in a corner table in the cafeteria and almost out of force of habit, he looked towards her usual seat to find solemn looking faces. He couldn't build up the nerve to talk to them though. Aedion glared at him every time they ran into each other since the fight with Aelin and his ire only seemed increased now, Lorcan refused to talk to anyone, standing up silently in one corner. Aedion's girlfriend was back from her trip and kept close to him at all times, the rest of the group quieter than usual.

When Aelin didn't come to school another day, Rowan approached Dorian—the only one of her friends who won't punch him in the face right now—in the library. The dark-haired guy sat quietly in a corner, his eyes on the book in his hands. Rowan could tell by the unfocused way they moved that he wasn't actually reading. He looked up when Rowan sat down beside him, not quite sure how to start.

Thankfully, Dorian Havilliard took pity on him. "I'm assuming you want to know where Aelin is?"

Rowan nodded.

Dorian tried to give him a reassuring smile but it faltered. He forced out, "She'll be fine, she's alright, she'll be back any day now." The words were meant to assure him but instead, they worried him more. Dorian sounded like he was trying to convince himself she would be fine.

"Look, I was a bad friend. I have no right to ask this but I need to know."

Dorian said, "There's nothing to know."

"Please, Dorian," he said, "I know something isn't fine. If she's hurt—"

Dorian shook his head, then in the most firm voice he'd ever used, he said, "She isn't hurt. Aelin is fine." Then he added, "But I can't tell you why she's not here. It's not my secret to tell."

He didn't like that at all, especially not the sad expression on Dorian's face. His mind kept taking him back to the worst case scenarios and he couldn't handle the thought of Aelin being hurt or in trouble. But Rowan did understand that he was keeping Aelin's privacy. He nodded, about to leave.

Dorian cleared his throat. "I can't tell you but I can give you her address? If you want to—I mean—"

"I'll take it," Rowan interrupted.

Aelin trembled as she looked through the keyhole. The man—boy, she realised—wore a leather jacket from what she could see. Not Arobynn. The backpack in his hand meant he was from her school. The boy held a bouquet of flowers in his other hand. It seemed like a safe bet that it was a student. It couldn't be Fenrys since he'd left only recently and Aedion was spending time with Lysandra, she was sure.

Aelin opened the door a little, cautiously peeking her head out. She threw it open in relief when she saw the visitor.

Rowan Whitethorn stepped forward and extended a bouquet of kingsflame flowers towards her. "I'm sorry I didn't let you explain yourself," he said. He scanned her up and down once and a weight settled in her stomach when she realised what she must look like—puffy red eyes, mascara running down both cheeks, clothes rumpled.

She tugged the hood of her sweatshirt forward, making him frown. "Can I see?"

"I don't think that's a good idea."

He shook his head. "Please, Aelin? I need to—I want to help. Please?" It was the please that broke her resolve. Aelin nodded, throwing her hood off.

Rowan took a sharp breath. There was a shallow scab on her left cheek, face stained with tears and her mussed out hair were much shorter than they'd once been. He ran his hand over the cut with a gentle touch, dazed, as if he didn't know what he was doing.

Aelin swallowed. "What? My new look that bad, you're speechless?" she joked but her words came out bitter.

"What happened?" He'd asked that question before and she hadn't answered. Aelin didn't know if she should answer him now but she did know she wanted to. She could hear Lorcan inside her head, telling her to do whatever she wanted.

Aelin couldn't keep the hurt off her voice. "He made me—he cut my hair. He had no right! I told him he had no right and he... shattered wine bottle... I don't want to—he didn't listen." Without thinking, Aelin threw her arms around his neck and held on for dear life.

Rowan helped her inside, seating her down on the couch. "I'm here, Ace."

She stood him up, then refused to talk to him and didn't even explain herself. Still, he was here. "I didn't—that day, you called—I wanted to come but he came home—Arobynn—I tried to sneak out but he was drunk and I—I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." Aelin didn't want to look at Rowan and see how she'd hurt him. She buried her face in his chest.

"You have nothing to apologise for." Unflinching steel shone in his green eyes. "You can trust me, Ace."

Trust, she did. She told him everything, starting from the accident that killed both of her parents, followed by the demise of her Uncle Orlon. The mantle of raising her fell on a distant relative Arobynn's shoulder when she was eight. He didn't know the first thing about kids but this one had an inheritance that he could leech off for a few years. At first, he left her alone to do as it pleased her, free to do whatever she wanted. Then he started drinking more than usual, came home at odd hours of the morning until one day, Aelin threw a fit and he threw a vase at her.

It worsened over time.

His contacts in the police force prevented her from being able to report the bastard and now, with less than an year left for her to turn eighteen, she found it wise to not provoke him and spend this year somehow.

Aelin waited for him to rise up and leave after hearing that, waited for him to tell her she was an idiot or something.

He didn't run. "Who else knows?"

"Aedion, Lysandra, Lorcan, Dorian, Fenrys and—and Chaol." Her throat tightened at the memory of him. "That's my ex. We, uh, we broke up a few days after I told him. He insisted I should go to the police but—"

"—but if he managed to use his contacts, it would be worse?" When she nodded, Rowan tightened his hold. "I'm sorry I was an asshole."

She shook her head, leaning forward. They were close enough that their foreheads touched. "I'm sorry—" At the growl of protest from Rowan, she shut up, letting her sentence hang unfinished. "How did you know where I live? I'm sure I didn't tell you."

"Dorian told me."

Of course he did, that matchmaking know-it-all bastard. "If this had gone bad, I would've killed him."

"Fortunately for all of us, it didn't."

"Fortunately," Aelin smiled.

Rowan smiled back at her. She had never seen him smile before. "You're the strongest person I know, fireheart."

That nickname—it made her heart flutter. She tried not to smile like an idiot at his words but it was impossible. Aelin asked, "The strongest? Even if you and Lorcan could probably crush my skull in like point five seconds?"

"Even then," he answered.

Aelin felt good. She hadn't felt good in quite some time.

168. porky’s super service (1937)

though ub iwerks gets the director’s credit, bob clampett and chuck jones both tackled the directing duties on this one. this is ub’s last credit at warner bros, touting an interminable stint of 2 (technically 3 if you count his early involvement in porky’s badtime story) cartoons. bob clampett would be the one to inherit his unit—according to bob, when he came into work one monday morning, he found iwerks’ director’s chair empty and was told that he was the director. this will be touched on more when covering porky’s badtime story.

slapstick is galore in this final iwerks credit—porky runs a service station, but runs into trouble when he has to fix up a car and keep an eye out on a sadistic, violent baby at the same time. with chuck jones’ frustration comedy and bob clampett’s sadistic antics, both combine to make quite an amusing effort for the time period.

already, the title card greets us with some ambiance as the sounds of car horns and motors preface a jazzy rendition of “i’m hatin’ this waitin’ around”, the cartoon’s motif. already, a wise decision to preserve money as the opening of the cartoon is reduced to a few layouts and pans: an overhead view of the titular service station trucks into a vertical pan of gas prices. 

“GAS 3 ¢” is emblazoned proudly on the sign at the service station, but as the pan goes down, the audience (and customer) is taxed for much more than they bargained for:

as much of a groaner and an eye-roller the punchline is, my pun-loving self can’t get too angry about this. this was actually one of the first looney tunes cartoons i checked out on my own, and it gave me a good laugh the first time i saw it.

the titular pig himself is busy at work filling up gas, befuddled at the placement (or lack thereof) of a car’s gas valve. a question mark pops above his head to convey his plight, an iwerks staple--iwerks would even animate a scene in the oswald cartoon oh teacher (1927), where a cat uses its own question mark as a tripwire in order to steal oswald’s girlfriend from him. porky, however, isn’t that sadistic (at least, not yet)--instead, he asks the car owner where the gas goes. the car owner responds back in a german accent, “you vant to know?” “ye-ye-yes, i veh-vant to know.” the owner then addresses the audience: “hmmph. should i tell him?” this is certainly a radio catchphrase of some kind, but which it belongs to, i haven’t found. i can confirm that it’s bubbled up in a few other cartoons, at the very least.

nevertheless, the car owner/dog lifts up the entire top of the car, where a gas valve is situated inside. porky heads over to pump the gas, a closeup on the gas take reflecting an iwerks “shiver take” as the arrow eventually approaches the 10 galloon mark. when the arrow approaches 9, a little cuckoo bird pops out of the gas tank, quipping “at the sound of the gong, it will be exactly 10 gallons”--a reference to time tones being played on the radio. the bird listens, and when the “clock” strikes 10, it retreats back into its rightful place. while perhaps not the funniest gag today, it does have some clever and smooth animation.

a nice bit of character animation as porky happily flips his shiny new coin, interrupted by the sound of an approaching customer. porky fills the customer’s car with oil as per request (”oka-okeh-okeh-ok-oka-ok-ok--alright!”), thus sparking a variety of odd job gags—alerting a flat tire to a rather angry patron, who literally goes through the (car) roof in anger before tying a knot in the rubbery tire himself to fix the issue (complete with some rubbery animation, ever so common in the iwerks cartoons), and hitting the dents in another car, including a spontaneous dent in the window, causing a broken window in the aftermath via hammer. the gags aren’t gut-busting, yet they have some nice animation to them, especially character animation with porky. however, the start of the opening is slow in comparison to the second half—a part of me wonders if iwerks had more influence on the first half before clampett and jones really sunk their toes in with the rest of the cartoon.

the second half of the cartoon is marked by the sound of an angry horn—that is, an angry woman honking her horn. elvia allman lends her voice to the persnickety customer as she rather bluntly asks (demands, really) porky to fix her flat tire. porky obliges, but is caught in a caveat—don’t wake the baby.

bob clampett is responsible for our introduction to the little dickens, animating porky popping his head in the car to remark “cute little fella.” and so, we see for ourselves just how cute this little fella is as he breaks his “slumber” to stick his tongue out at our protagonist. a nice sense of comedic timing and foreboding—we already know that nothing good is going to come out of this ordeal.

as porky dutifully busies himself with the tire, junior confirms the audience’s suspicions by whacking porky over the head with his bottle. porky, rightfully disgruntled, whips his head around to find the culprit before resuming his work. as he rotates the tire, junior assets his aggression even more by putting the car in drive.

and, predictably yet amusingly so, porky is sent whirling around the back tire. he, along with the tire itself, are let loose from the car as they both catapult right into a metal pole. iwerks’ dizziness lines as porky collects himself coupled with the perfect pig-shaped dent in the pole definitely make porky’s plight more amusing than painful. carl stalling’s gentle yet sardonic rendition of “my little buckaroo” adds another layer of sweet, incongruous irony to the entire cake.

porky’s suffering has only just begun—a suspended part of the pole gives way from the impact and gives porky another good konk on the noggin. as porky once more attempts to collect himself, he realizes that he’s stuck inside the tire. thus sparks a montage of him repeatedly straining to free himself, but to no avail--the timing itself at times is a little floaty and awkward (mainly when porky’s crawling around on all fours), and the sound effects don’t feel as natural as they could be, but the facial expressions are rather appealing, and the movement is fun and rubbery. at one point, trying to free himself, porky grabs the back of his overalls and accidentally pinches himself--certainly a bob clampett gag, as porky turns defensive and looks around to see who snubbed him. 

while porky struggles, the demon baby slings his bottle at porky, hitting him square in the arse and effectively freeing him from the tire (much to porky’s vocal discomfort). the timing of porky identifying the projectile and throwing it at the ground, shooting a glare at the baby, is absolutely priceless. he finally heads over to the car to confront the little dickens, but junior is peacefully sleeping, much to our hero’s head-scratching befuddlement. as he turns his back, junior once more shoots an angry glare, signaling that the fight has only just begun.

the frustration of porky becomes much more visible (and hilarious) with this next scene as he prepares to work on the engine. just as he lifts the lid of the car, junior, rife with sadistic energy, smacks the lid right over porky’s head, trapping him inside. junior’s gleeful expression coupled with porky’s visible temperament really add a lot of flavor and feeling--as the charade continues, porky finally allows himself to rip the hood of the car off its hinges and throw it off screen. timing is succinct and snappy and allow for the jokes to hit quite well, even if it is a tad predictable.

however, the timing of the next sequence is not as snappy, and feels a bit like an odd transition between scenes, with an overall more whimsical mood as porky listens to the engine for any problems. nevertheless, junior’s attitude hasn’t changed in the slightest: he turns the ignition on, causing porky to be electrocuted (with a rather ill-fitting scream not by blanc). junior gives porky enough time to recover, honking the horn just when porky’s listening to it, sparking some rather awkward animation of porky getting punchy from the impact. while this scene doesn’t flow as well as others, it’s still rather amusing and creative--the iwerks shiver takes and inverted colors during the electrocution sequence add a nice touch of individuality.

next, porky is dutifully oiling the engine, sparking junior to press the starter. the engine mechanics kick up, porky’s snout getting stuck to the rising and falling pillars. he finally frees his snout (the scene reminding me of of w.c. squeals’ snout sticking on the ice in tashlin’s cracked ice a mere year later), only to get thrown around by the rapidly pushing pillars of the engine. rather creative as we see multiples of porky bobbing around in a blur. misfortune is still high, however, for the top of the engine closes on top of him, and all we see is bumps rising and falling in the metal above. finally, porky is shot out of the exhaust pipe, his body covered in soot, landing against the gas pump/clock hybrid from before, the cuckoo bird adding insult to injury as it gives a call after the impact. 

a rather abrupt transition as porky, now unfazed, arrives back at the car to confront his foe once more playing possum. the facial expressions and overall timing give this away as a bob clampett scene as porky shoots repeated scowls at the baby, who returns the favor with some rather snide, mocking expressions of his own behind the pig’s back. porky finally believes he’s caught junior, who’s currently stretching his face out at porky--yet, sure enough, junior goes right back to “sleep” when porky turns around, causing the pig to give a frustrated snap of resignation. that doesn’t stop our protagonist from hatching a plan--he zips around to the other end of the car, right behind junior. surely enough, junior prepares to make a face, but realizes he’s been duped. wonderfully smooth animation of junior looking around in befuddlement, you can practically see those little gears turning. finally, he whips around, spots porky, gasps, and goes right back to sleep.

regardless, they both know that junior’s been caught as they make eye contact once more. finally, junior literally rolls away and heads to the window crank, sliding the window up and getting porky’s snout caught in the process. porky spits out a stream of threats and exclamations of pain (”OWW! ouch! o-oh, leh-leh-let go! i’ll fix you! eh-eh-eh-eh-don’t do that! s-s-stop! s-stop, ya hear me!?”) while junior sneaks out of the car, shutting the door and letting the pig dangle around helpless. in the midst of porky’s rant, junior heads off and arrives back with a hose, placing it matter of factly in porky’s overalls.

suddenly, we see that the hose is connected to an air pump. junior gives the wheel a few good turn, and air shoots through the tube and right into porky’s pants. porky is finally freed from the window, but is now rocketing around in the air, laughing hysterically. mel blanc’s performance of porky’s hysterical laughter, sounding eerily similar to daffy’s trademark HOOHOO! laugh is nothing less than contagious and commendable. 

while porky flies around in the air, junior makes matters worse by donning an oil gun and shooting spurts of oil right at the pig. and they said pig’s couldn’t fly! unfortunately for junior, porky’s movements are too erratic to make for a proper target, but no matter: a simple shut off of the air will do the trick. 

porky flops to the ground, having little time to grasp his bearings as junior shoots his face full of oil. the physics of the oil are nice and rubbery, very malleable, thick, and stretchy--certainly remniscent of the mud puddles in iwerks’ previous effort, porky and gabby. as i said before, i’ve always admired the physics in iwerks’ cartoons: you feel like you could grab everything for yourself. very soft, stretchy, rubbery, easy to manipulate. 

despite porky’s demands for junior to give up the gun, the little baby from hell only squirts porky with another helping of oil, this time covering his entire body. once more, the animation and physics of the oil are to be commended. porky slips around helplessly in the now fully formed oil slick, which sends him catapulting down a rather random set of stairs in the ground (though, upon further inspection, the stairs were present in the opening layout, so it’s not as spontaneous as it could be).

junior once more attempts to target porky, but no more oil comes out of the pump. predictably yet amusingly so, the little dickens turns the gun to his own face. as he pulls the lever, a nice, hearty gush of oil covers his entire face. sweet, slippery karma. 

now, junior is just as covered as porky is, and begins to wail. porky’s nods of satisfaction are a hilarious detail--as is his surprise when he notices the persnickety mother approaching. junior points at porky, who doesn’t appear all that blameless as he now holds the oil gun, attempting to hide it behind his back coyly.

the mother gives porky a good lecture about how he ought to be ashamed of himself, all the while disposing of her child like a rag doll and putting him in the back seat of the car. elvia allman’s speech is drowned out by the wails of junior, however, prompting the mother to give an eerily polite “quiet, junior, when mother’s talking.” the timing of the next joke is spot on: as junior continues to bawl, the mother smacks him right in the face. the way the smack sound effect even cuts off and the total silence of junior combine to make a great payoff, though the joke IS rather dark and not the most ethical. still, wonderful timing and execution on that one.

comedic timing is still rife as the mother, now oddly subdued, ponders “now... where was i? oh yes. I’M GOING TO REPORT THIS TO THE AUTHORITIES!” in the midst of her “it’s getting so that you can’t trust anybody anymore” ranting and raving, junior, who’s seldom learned his lesson, reaches for a nearby gas hose and ties it around the car tire. 

porky is left to his own devices as the mother and her hell child roll off into the distance. however, junior leaves one final impact: all three gas pumps are sucked out of their respective places and dragged behind the car. even more insult to injury, the entire service station collapses on top of the unlucky pig. a VERY creative close as the “PORKY’S SUPER SERVICE” sign lands right on top of porky, his disgruntled, oily self popping out right in the middle. who needs a drum when you have a wooden sign?

and thus wraps up ub iwerks’ directorial reign at warner bros. while his cartoons aren’t my favorite, i’ve certainly come to appreciate them much more, for their individuality (such as the shiver takes, visible reactions such as question marks and dizziness lines, and so forth) and rubbery animation. i definitely feel that this is his stronger effort out of his 2 pieces--it has a lovely score, the animation is fun and rubbery, and again, bob clampett’s sadistic energy coupled with chuck jones’ frustration comedy make for a delightful combination. porky is SUPER appealing in the iwerks cartoons as well in the design compartment--lots of really great expressions to freeze frame on. this cartoon is a winner for me--i say watch it! it’s not the most exciting porky cartoon by any means, and it still has its weaknesses: the beginning half is rather slow, there are a few timing issues, etc, but it’s still rather enjoyable overall. i almost wish iwerks had stayed longer, just to see what his other cartoons would have been like. thankfully, though, bob clampett took his place, sparking the reign of my personal favorite director.

so, overall, give it a watch!

Sure it was mean to keep taking shots at robots that were designed more for warehouses then combat, but she couldn't be absolutely nice to the talking jackass.

"You really are not helping the point of how corporations are not evil when you just keep talking." And it makes a shiver roll down her spine at how easily he can just talk about killing other people, as if it was like they were his toys to destroy. It was on the same degree of glee she heard from psychos screaming about rib cages. At least they had the excuse of being driven insane.

Gaige lets out a whine at him mentioning the placement was for aesthetic, the inner engineer in her wanting to scream out all the reasons why that was poor choices. So many fixes that she could easily see in her mind, but she had to hold her tongue because she was not going to give ideas to the person who made it very clear he wanted all vault hunters dead. No matter how many ideas were popping up in her brain.

Nope.

And then he back onto talking about his robots over a rather annoying click that got herself moving once more. Something to work out the emotions so she could think through what was said and what to say. And hearing him accept her point that not once has she ever claimed to be the good guy, she smirked before it feel. Her pace increased in speed as she left the garage and headed to the back where the spiderants were. All while Jack was in her ear, trying to shake up her beliefs. Avoiding her actual questions.

She knew she needed to be somewhere no one else was since she knew she was about to get rather vocal.

"Well, I wouldn't say pissed off. More annoyed then anything else. " Hands stretch out before her as she splays out her fingers and collect her own thoughts. Far too many wanting out at once. "Lets work backwards here. Yes I do think about what I am doing, of what I am being told what to do. Most of which is fixing messes left behind by a lot of others, but you wouldn't know that since you only have a superficial view from above on what we are actually doing. Thus allowing you to paint your 'bandit' narrative over what we are doing."

Shoulder get rolled back as she keeps walking, her robotic arm flicks out and DT is digistructed before her. Spiderants clamber off in the distance. She rather not have to worry about her safety.

"And that isn't what I wanted as an answer. I want facts, give me an actual example of a time of someone who is marked down in history as a good person, as a hero, has done actions similar to your own. Not just old moral and philosophical debates, because those are what ifs and this isn't just a what if. This is the lively hoods of everyone on this planet, innocent or not."

And then a dry laugh escaped her lips as she worked her way to the last part of her rant. On him trying to make her feel some sort of doubt.

"And I'm sure the Crimson Raiders can do no worse then Hyperion on that track record. After all they weren't the ones that invited others to the planet only to blow up trains in the middle of the Frozen Wastes. One hell of a life experience sitting on a rather peaceful train when the boxes start turning into loaders that start firing immediately. Only for the world to go sideways because everything is exploding. Have you ever had to un-bury yourself out of snow filled with corpses both old and new? I never knew what that was like until I ended up on a Hyperion train."

"Well, duh. Of course it's quantity over quality, you know how many loaders we have to produce each day just so they can get their jobs done while you're destroying them? It's a lot, dum dum. So, thanks, for that." The last few words were laced with annoyance, though as he continued speaking there was no trace of it, "I'd love to see your little baking soda volcano of a robot do the stuff the loaders do. Really, I would. I think it'd be hilarious to watch it slowly crush itself trying to lift a shipping container from the loading bay all the way down into customs."

He didn't. It killed him a little inside whenever he had to see yet another one of his bots blown to kingdom come by some idiots. He just figured it'd be another step closer to pissing her off so bad she screamed and hung up.

"I know! Great, isn't it?" Jack laughed, clasping his hands above his head and stretching until he felt the little knot in his back relax, "Hey- If you're super lucky, I'll even tell you about the time someone from middle management didn't turn up to a meeting they'd requested. Bet you can guess how well that went. Let's just say he wouldn't be walking home to his wife and kids anytime soon."

"Ah, annoyance is close enough, right? Gotta love mildly inconveniencing people I don't like." Jack's brows raised. Wow. She was taking him super seriously. He'd already forgotten the majority of their conversation.

"No, trust me, kid. I'm fully aware of what y'all think you're 'actually' doing. It's just… bull, to put it lightly. Sure, maybe you just came to open a vault, get rich." He leaned in closer to the echo, "But what are you doing now, exactly? And no, I don't mean looking all pathetic like you always do and digging through scrap. I mean to get to the vault. Let me guess… Good ol' Lilith's got you doin' her grunt work, right? Running place to place, 'kill this guy!', 'get this thing or person!'. I just- I just know I'm right."

"Let's- Just let me pull up the definition of a bandit, m'kay?" Jack took barely a second to find it on the echonet, and he turned back to the echo, "Alright, here. A bandit is an outlaw, in this case you, who belongs to a gang, the Crimson Raiders, who operate in an isolated or lawless area, Pandora. So, tell me, princess… Where was I wrong? Or do big words just make your head hurt so darn much?"

"You know, your argument would make total sense. The whole… People's livelihoods… Thing… Except for the fact that nearly everyone down on Pandora would kill you and sell you for parts." Jack's expression darkened, and his tone grew serious, "There are people down where you are who'd do that to a kid. And you really think that they deserve to be spared? Do they deserve trust and respect? Or do they all deserve a big ol' moonshot to the face?"

He let out a breath, eyes flickering over to the paperwork stack in consideration, before they returned to the echo. 

"Oh, and I'm fully aware that isn't what you wanted as an answer. I just- I really do love being unhelpful. Especially with people who work with backstabbing bastards who've wronged me in some way or another." He shrugged slightly, "And, no. No, I won't be doing that. You wanna know why? Because no one's ever made an entire military composed solely of robots with AIs to try and fix a whole planet. You're just fueling the raging inferno that is my ego here, babe."

"But, trust me on this one. The Crimson Raiders can, and have done worse. They ever mention why exactly I want y'all dead? Or, did they sugar coat it and cry 'Jack is just bad!' at the top of their lungs?" He laughed, the sound growing even louder as she described the train events.

God, he wished he'd seen their faces…

"Sorta! Well, not in the snow. It was more, y'know, dirt." He seemed to space out a little after that thought, eyes on the echo but not particularly focused on it.

It took a while for him to zone back in, but when he did he continued with the exact same intonation and volume as before. 

"Anyway, y- you wanna try and take another shot at me? Or has your fragile little heart had enough?" Jack laughed loudly, and he finally made a move for the paperwork.

What Is an SVG File?

“-sampled your dna to make a clone.”

ace lies his hand flat on the glass.

on the other side, bubbles rise up from the liquid in the tank. ace ignores the alarm still blaring in the distance, eyes focusing in on the beginnings of a number tattooed to the side of the man’s neck. he can’t quite make it out, his view blocked by an electrode and light, silky hair. he’s not sure he wants to know, either, now that he thinks about it.

his hand falls from the glass. ace takes a step back, takes a deep breath in. his eyes track another stream of bubbles. 

“okay,” he mutters. “time to come out.”

the glass shatters and he’s immediately soaked in the foreign liquid, sputtering at the feeling. he definitely didn’t think that one through, but it’s too late to do anything now, not with the body falling into his arms from the inertia. a swath of electrodes pop off their placement on skin as they get pulled too tight from their attachment to the top of the tank. ace breathes deep, once, twice, and tries to relax his shoulders, arms still holding the body close to his chest. 

he backs up a few steps, until his feet are no longer stepping in thick liquid, and then crouches down. he lifts a hand to swipe light bangs from the man’s face, and his shoulders tense as eyelashes flutter with the movement.

they’re green, ace thinks, pulling back just enough to watch. the thought startles him. like he’d been expecting something else.

“who are you?”

the words startle ace from his thoughts, and he tunes back in to find those eyes fixed on him. there’s no emotion there, not even a curiosity. only a calm indifference.

he resists the downturn of his lips.

“i could ask you the same thing,” he says, letting his words drawl just a tad. “what do they call you?”

the man blinks. the action catches ace off-guard. it seemed like such an unnecessary thing, for a machine. he eyes ace for a moment, as if determining if he was friend or foe. his face doesn’t betray any of his thoughts.

“i am the system of acute biowarfare organics. or, sabo, for short.”

ace’s bafflement quickly turns into shock, and his heartbeat shutters, and he leans back a little, and the face in front of him morphs into that of a child’s, blonde hair closely cropped, blue eyes smiling up at him-

“sabo” blinks again and ace is drawn into their green. no. what was he thinking. it was just a coincidence. there was no way his clone had-

sabo’s face screws up. it’s the most emotion ace has seen of him yet. “your clone?” he mutters, and ace realizes he had spoken aloud. “no. i was cloned from a dead man.”

ace shivers at the words. so he knew. at least, he knew a name. and they still thought he was . . well, that was good. maybe coming here wasn’t for nothing after all, if he could bring this piece of news back.

“i gave you my name. what is yours?”

oh. right. “ace,” he manages, pulling back slightly once he realizes sabo was sitting up on his own.

“ace?” sabo tips his head. “is that also short for something?”

ace’s lips quirk up. “it’s just ace.”

“i see.” sabo moves his head to glance around the room. the alarm is still going off, but it’s outside, and the doors were shut, and with no destruction inside the room minus the tank, he must not pay it much mind. he does, however, seem to piece together his situation. “why am i out of my tank?”

ace leans forward, swiping a wet lock out of the way to look where the electrode had been. ‘47′ is written on the side of sabo’s neck. ace shivers as he thumbs over it. “what is this for?” he whispers.

sabo glances down at the number. “oh. there were forty-six unsuccessful attempts before me,” he says simply.

ace shivers again, hand falling away. 

“why am i out of my tank?” sabo asks again. he folds his hands over his lap cordially. 

“i pulled you out,” ace admits. “i . . came to get you. to get you out of here.”

sabo blinks. the action is driving ace insane. “did i do something wrong?”

“no!” ace leans forward, right in sabo’s face, hands on either side of his knees. “no, you haven’t done anything wrong,” he insists. “but the people here aren’t . . . good. i . . uh. i think you would be happier . . er, better off, with me.”

“is this about project cipher?” sabo frowns. “i admit, it did seem rather questionable.”

cipher? okay, maybe coming here really wasn’t for nothing. “it’s more about you being free,” ace admits, choosing to ignore the latter half of sabo’s statement. maybe there was a default, for him to question it. he wasn’t going to worry about it now. “here, uh-” he moves to his knees, grabs sabo’s hands, and slowly works them both to a standing position.

“free,” sabo mutters. his eyes drop. “you’re not wearing much clothing,” he quips.

ace bristles. “i don’t want to hear it from someone who isn’t wearing any!”

sabo hums. “it is rather cold.”

his eyes follow sabo’s down and he grasps at the fabric to his shorts. “i’m not giving you these!”

sabo frowns. “you have to care to some extent, though.”

ace reads his hidden words easily. otherwise you wouldn’t be here. you wouldn’t be helping me. he lets out a sigh and pulls his satchel forward from around his back, digging through the contents. “thank god koala insisted i take this,” he mutters, pulling out a dark cloak. he passes it to sabo. “here, wear this.”

sabo takes it slowly. he unwinds the fabric until he’s holding the hood, and then blinks back over at ace. “there are no sleeves.”

ace throws his head back. he breathes deep. then he steps forward, rather calmly, and takes the cloak back from sabo. he throws it over the blond’s shoulders, fastening the clasp, and pulls it forward until it covered him properly. “there,” he mutters, his word a puff of air on sabo’s chin. 

“thank you,” sabo says, and ace moves back in a hurry. 

“so, uh.” he moves a hand to scratch at his head. “will you come with me? i promise it’ll be better than here.”

“how do you know here is bad?”

“you showed some uncertainty earlier,” ace admits. “though that is strange,” he adds, voice low.

sabo catches it anyway. “strange?” he deadpans. “i am a clone, ace. not a robot.”

ace blushes hard, all the way to his ears. “s-so-!”

“i have a conscience, to a certain degree.” sabo frowns. “it is not very developed, but i was only created two months ago.” he shakes his head. “anyway, you are right. the things i . . will do here.” he looks away. “i do not think they are in my best interests.” he looks back to ace. “you have been kind to me,” he mentions, tugging at the cloak.

ace reaches out his hand immediately. “i promise i’ll take good care of you. you deserve better than this. come with me, and i can guarantee you the freedom to do anything. even come back, if that’s . .” he hesitates. “really want you want.”

he’s surprised when sabo takes his hand. it’s cold, and still wet, but ace feels the underlying warmth, feels that sabo really is human, engineered or no. he looks up into sabo’s green eyes, but stops on the small smile on his lips instead.

“then,” sabo begins. “take me with you.”

ace tugs sabo’s hood down and leads him through the carnage in the halls. the one time he looks back it’s to see sabo pulling the hood back up just enough to glance around. he doesn’t seem bothered by what he sees, so ace chooses not to comment.

they stop on the perimeter so ace can make a call, moving a few paces away and pulling a baby den-den mushi from his satchel. sabo seems content with eyeing the scenery. it makes ace wonder if this is the blond’s first time outside, but a sharp voice pulls him from those thoughts.

“dragon is pissed at you,” koala tells him, the den-den’s expression morphing into perplexion. 

“i avoided all the cameras,” ace assures her. 

“whatever. did you get him?”

he looks back at sabo. “yeah.”

“and? is he really your look-alike?”

“no, actually, he’s not.” he reminds me of my dead friend, he thinks, but he doesn’t say that part aloud. 

koala sighs. “well, i guess that makes it easier. we won’t have trouble telling the two of you apart.”

ace snorts. “ha-ha,” he mocks, then turns serious. “listen, i don’t know how long we’ll be in the clear. my boat’s docked on the southeast end. you’re in range, so you’re close, right?”

“you want a ride?” koala hums, pretends to think on it. “dragon won’t be happy with me.”

“we can worry about that when we make it back?”

koala hums again. “dunno, i found this really cool boat earlier. i was thinking of retrieving it for him, to apologize for you running off-”

“do not leave me stranded,” ace hisses. “koala, please.”

she snorts. “relax, hun. i’m at your nine. hidden, because i have tact. don’t take more than half an hour.”

he feels his shoulders drop in relief. “thank you-”

“don’t thank me yet. you still have to deal with dragon, when we get back. i’m not helping with that.”

his shoulders tense again. right. “i’ll think of something.”

koala rolls her eyes, echoed on the den-den. “of course you will. hurry.”

“right.” he hangs up and pockets the den-den, turning back to face sabo. “ready to move?”

“why does it matter that you’re caught on camera?” sabo questions, and ace winces, unaware he’d been listening in until just now.

he sighs, then decides to take a risk. “i’m supposed to be dead.”

sabo’s eyes widen, just a little. he steps forward and they narrow, examining ace. “it is short for something, isn’t it?” he mutters. “what’s your name? your full name.”

ace smiles, and it’s tired. “gol d. ace,” he answers. sabo stops cold in front of him. “you were cloned from my dna.”

No unlink on delete : when moving tombstones, the game no longer deletes the sim in question.

Anti-Redundancy : elimnates spawning of unnecessary redundant NPCs.

Sim Blender : ultimate sims 2 management item ; acts like a "god" / IS A MUST HAVE.

Toddlers:

Baby bottle replacement : replaces the ugly green bottle with a clear one filled with milk.

Accessible toddler high chair : global mod that allows sims to access any high chair from left & right sides. custom chairs work as well.

Build & Buy Mode:

OMSPs : allows you to place more decorative objects in more places.

Rug Texture Fix : fixes the wonky ugly textures that happen to rugs when places off-grid in game.

Television Placement Mod : allows you to adjust the placement of tvs, can be moved up and down on walls like paintings.

Walk-Through Blocks : allows sims to walk around and through objects; useful for small lots.

Business Mods:

Business Mod : fixes a ton of issues with Open for Business. Get this only if you're interested in starting a business with your sim.

Townie Budget Mod : townies no longer are able to pay for things they cannot afford. adds to realism.

Computer Mod:

Monique's Hacked Computer : allows online shopping, sims to have bank accounts, and much more.

Education Mods:

Semester Changes : makes University 8 days instead of 24; if you're interested in making semesters smaller for faster playthrough

Faster Homework : finish homework in 15 minutes instead of an hour.

Fix Mods:

Extended Family treated as Family : allows the game to recognize second cousins, first cousins once removed, great grandparents, great grandchildren, and great aunts and uncles as family members. No more dating distant relatives!

No Sim Loaded : removes useless “sim loaded” tokens and other garbage that slows down your game and causes lag.

Pescado’s Apartment Hack : fixes a lot of issues with apartments.

Smart Beds : forces the bed ownership system in the game to actually work. Sims will autonomously use the bed they have the most ownership of.

Hobby Mod:

Professional Blogger : sims who have maxed out enthusiasm in a hobby will earn money during the time they blog.

Job Mod:

Level Numbers Added to Job Titles : adds the job level next to the job title in menu screens. Very handy for quickly seeing what level your Sim is at in their career.

Memory Mods:

Memory Manipulator : the Memory Manipulator allows you to edit the memories of the currently selected sim. Now you can edit memories directly through an in-game menu

Met New Great Grandchild Memory : this mod gives the memory of meeting a new great grandchild.

Misc Mods:

Watch TV from All Chairs : allows your Sims to watch TV from chairs facing any direction at least 10 squares back from the TV – even if they’re facing sideways or at 45-degree angles.

Marriage Last Name Chooser : allows you to choose the last name of two Sims getting married.

Camera Mod:

Gunmod’s Camera Mod : necessary to view your skies and skylines. Allows you to view the far edges of your hood and have a top-down view, plus many more camera angles.

Pregnancy Mods:

Pregnancy Relationship Change : for when a sim’s pregnancy first shows and those around her realize she’s pregnant. Allows a Sim to figure out a baby is not “his” if he has high enough logic skill points.

Quiet Pregnancy : no longer get the pregnancy chimes after try for baby. Pregnancies will be a surprise!

Young Adults Can Enjoy Maternity : this is a suite of mods that allows your Young Adults to get pregnant and have babies in University, plus a host of other functions.

Relationship Mods:

Autonomous Casual Romance (ACR) – allows your Sims to autonomously woohoo, try for baby, make booty calls, and perform a whole host of romantic interactions. gives your Sims more freedom to make their own romantic decisions and creates a lot of drama and fun in your neighborhood. Highly recommended! It's one of my favorite mods.

Just Be Friends Social : teens and up can ask romantic interests to “just be friends,” and then all crush/love flags between them get cleared.

Skill Mod:

Comm Skilling : controlled sims, NPCs, and townies may gain skills while visiting community lots. Enthusiasm may now be gained on community lots and while visiting.

Townie Mods:

Townie Body Diversity : any spawned townies have a chance of being either fat or fit. Every Sim is no longer thin.

Townie Move-In No Memory Loss : townies will keep all their memories when moving into a playable household.

Must Have Tools:

Sims2Pack Clean Installer : Sims2Pack Clean Installer is a tool, mainly for lots. It categorizes, catalog, and removes content, as well as preview files before installing.

Bulk Rename Utility : Software that lets you rename files ; a lot of package files come with ( ) , [ ] , +, - and even _, files with different symbols can make the game take longer to read and therefore taking more time to load.(if help is needed, leave something on my ask, i’ll help you)

The Compressionizer : let's you compact all your custom content, making them smaller in size.

Aim:

In this studio paper students will establish a critical position through a theme based experimental project exploring the intersection between diverse design practices. You will explore ideas to transform ‘dead’ or unused spaces, be they spaces between buildings, walls, carparks, shared spaces or inner-city parks by hiding features, fixtures or people thereby drawing out aspects or not considered before. Students will work collaboratively and interdisciplinary as a group or solus to explore and combine unconventional communication design materials, methods and practices to creative interventions in public spaces.

Overview:

Design practices and interventions in public spaces can transform disagreeable, forgotten or redundant city buildings/objects and under utilised shared spaces. You can employ the broad spectrum of design methods using performance, installation, or projection or such like to rejuvenate, to reconfigure how spaces are perceived and engaged with, more importantly how people ‘fit’ within these spaces making them enjoyable and cultivating a city culture. These short-term ‘performances’ and or installations can serve as a means to test how the public reacts or does not react/engage within the spaces before and after, also examine how a recreated space or idea interacts with inner city communities.

Urban Camouflage:

Camouflage is usually associated with the army and hunters but no more, it is used by artists and designers to make creative statements, enhance urban environments, making objects, people and spaces look more agreeable and sometimes for shock value.

An important part of how individuals or groups use or participate within public places is managing their visible or invisible status. To stand out and be noticed, to express who you are and what you stand for is an important human necessity. Conversely to blend, to merge into the space(s) offers advantages, people may choose to linger, to observe others without being noticed. The desire for visibility or anonymity, be it people, objects or buildings affects how they interact together.

People and objects seek to be anonymous or conspicuous in a city, to disappear or be noticed within a crowd, streets, buildings, vehicles or public transport.

The Brief:

The Living Lab: A Pop Up Campus. Hutt City Council and New Zealand Transport Agency are partners with this year’s 197.471 student cohort to explore re-configuring/imagining a street within the Lower Hutt central business district. Possible themes focus on historical and contemporary placemaking, the city’s future and reclaiming and establishing community spaces. You will explore design/ideation opportunities and narratives involving temporary interventions, installations and or events to launch the initiative. Initiatives could include temporary road surface reconfiguration like artificial grass, vinyl or paint-concepts/placement ideas to motivate and empower local sports and dance clubs plus broad community groups and retailers, artists/performers to directly engage with the space. The initiative is to create a theme or a narrative that various groups/clubs/individuals would use to create something temporary or long term within the space.

You will need to design an intervention(s), installation(s) or a performance(s) using urban camouflage methodologies so people, objects, vehicles and or buildings stand out or merge, and or disappear from specific angles. The brief invites you to produce a body of work that harmonises, contrasts, engages or challenges an audience. Resolutions can be performance/events involving clothing/fashion garment(s) installations, ‘wallpaper’ or murals/paintings, projection(s), software that reacts to the environment – people, weather/temperature or use of fixed or movable ‘objects’.

It is proposed that some of the course time will be spent in-situ. We are exploring the use of a vacant shop opposite the street alongside a container on site for us to occupy. The rationale is to allow council staff, businesses, retailers and secondary school students to directly engage with design students re the process of design thinking applied to a specific space within the concept of placemaking.

Pragmatics:

You will need to consider how will your audience engages with the work, is it to and from work, leisure or break times, how long will they spend viewing the work/space, is it short and impactful or does it evolve over time, do you want your audience to participate with the work or simply observe? Also what do you want to achieve with the work, what sort of response/experience if any is desired? Think about how your work relates to the space(s), is it in harmony, contrast or does it create a tension, is it reconfiguring an existing space or creating a new one, is it clearly defined or metaphorical? It is not expected that your work will need to be physically located within your chosen locale. You can research and document the area(s) then position your work within the space through digital means if necessary. It might be possible to locate your test pieces within the physical space(s) if you meet Massey University and Hutt City Council health and safety regulations, have addressed compliance issues and sought permissions. Final agreement will need to be given by the paper coordinator.

Your submission will include a document or blog that includes your research, analysis, methodology, insight, rationale and reflection plus a 2-3 minute video either live or ‘constructed’ that captures the essence of your project.
