Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #14 (4.2)
Tumblr media
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 Volume 2 (Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki My rating: 5 of 5 stars Aside from the dumbass (lovesick) prince, aside from the spiteful (petty) archknights, and aside from her exceedingly worrisome (annoying) caretakers back home, Rozemyne's first semester abroad is going swell. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is the novel series' finest example of "one person's daily aspiration is another person's unmitigated disaster." Lady Rozemyne slips into a comfortable schedule of attending the library and further coaching up her duchy's peers. She occasionally makes time for a tea party or two, but only when necessary or in furtherance of her personal goals. Is it really Rozemyne's fault that she shows up Prince Anastasius, arrogant and abrasive, whenever he challenges her to prove her noble worth? Is it really Rozemyne's fault that the jerks from the duchy of Dunkelfelger are too stupid to do their own background work to avoid being humiliated when attempting to match wits? Whatever the case, readers track Rozemyne's daily adventures as she ingratiates herself to the library staff, befuddles fellow archduke candidates, and occasionally wades into interduchy statecraft, if by sheer accident. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 is a strong, entertaining read. Without constant commentary from Ferdinand, Sylvester, and Karstedt, the young woman's delightfully logical efforts to weasel out of danger are met with just the right balance of amusement and confusion. Social graces this girl has not. For example, when a rival duchy challenges Ehrenfest to a game of treasure-stealing ditter, Rozemyne-the-strategist absolutely dominates. And when Anastasius publicly chides her intellect, Rozemyne-the-brilliant calmly and coolly proves she's eternally prepared with a comeback. One of the novel's best moments occurs during a tea party. A friendly get-together between Rozemyne and the dainty Lady Eglantine (duchy of Klassenberg) goes sideways when Anastasius crashes the party and insists Rozemyne compose a new piece of music for his sort-of girlfriend. The prince is throwing his weight around and trying to put Ehrefest in its place. Except, of course, Rozemyne snaps her fingers, orders her attendants into ready position, and blithely composes a new tune for the harspiel on the fly. She's that good. It isn't until much later that Rozemyne learns how constantly showing up royalty, and frequently responding to their prodding with raw sarcasm, is typically viewed as a death warrant. Whoops. To that end, the current volume also makes a concerted effort to materialize the nation's political infrastructure. Readers learn more of the balance of power between the two princes (Anastasius and his elder brother, Sigiswald). Readers also learn more about the rules of succession (real or presumed), as well as the consequences of attempting to run away from one's royal fate. As far as drama goes, ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v14 doesn't disappoint. When one of her retainers expresses outright disgust for serving a noble with such a weak constitution, Rozemyne must make a difficult decision regarding how to properly effect a punishment befitting the ignorant. To cut off a retainer is to disgrace a person's whole family. But doing so also makes one liable for retaliation. If she's too severe, then her reputation may shift toward a more authoritarian vibe. If she's too soft, then her other retainers may view her kindness as a weakness. What's a librarian to do?

Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #15 (4.3)
Tumblr media
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 Volume 3 (Ascendance of a Bookworm by Miya Kazuki My rating: 5 of 5 stars It's good to be home. But what in the world is home to a bookworm stuck in an isekai narrative replete with scheming nobles, petty collaborators, persnickety royalty, and friends drifting further apart? ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v15 briefly returns to Ehrenfest, and upon apparating locally, Lady Rozemyne is beset with a multitude of responsibilities pursuant to resolving the many emotional burdens she had initially left behind. Ehrenfest is abuzz, but perhaps not in the way Rozemyne would prefer. The printing industry is taking off in fits and starts, while the young woman's socializing skills have left the aub a nervous wreck (Sylvester: "Rozemyne, when it comes to socializing matters, you make everyone want to leap off a cliff," page 82). As such, the biggest challenge rests in anticipating what's next: dissolving old contracts and signing new ones, adhering to protocol with end-of-year ceremonies at the Royal Academy, and negotiating terms of (the printing) business with regional giebes. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v15 is a comfy volume. It's also a significant turning point in the protagonist's emotional journey. Is she leaving people behind? Is she being left behind by others? Will her caretakers prioritize her anxieties? Satisfy her intellectual curiosity? Will her prospective fiancé acknowledge her sensitivity to these needs? The author addresses these and other challenges through the novel series' trademarked humor and empathy. Rozemyne's socializing is only terrible because she's a compassionate person (e.g., honesty is discouraged among nobles). And the weight of building out the printing business is only so fraught because it can go wrong in so many ways. Intraduchy, Rozemyne must control and coordinate what might otherwise grow frenetic. Interduchy, Rozemyne's burgeoning relationship with Lady Eglantine (Klassenberg) is a delightful surprise, and serves as the support the young woman (sort of) receives in building up Ehrenfest's reputation. The novel's biggest hurdle concerns how Rozemyne pledges to move on from her connections to the Lower City. Bigger printing business means bigger magic contracts, which means nullifying and moving on from the older, smaller relationships. Ferdinand steps in and offers a bit of compassion in lieu of his usual tough love, but that doesn't make the young woman's emotional burdens any lighter at the outset. Rozemyne fears she's becoming a different person, or fears everyone else is simply moving on or maturing at a faster rate in their lives. Who will comfort her? ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v15 is fun and free of drama, but the book's closing chapters again position Rozemyne head-to-head with established noble culture. When apprentice layscholar Philine gets into a predicament of sorts, a debate ensues as to the responsibility of higher nobles to lend aid to those in need. The danger of leaving things be, and the precedent of adhering to those dangers, are not vicissitudes of privilege Rozemyne is willing to suffer under any circumstance. It would appear that for Rozemyne to overcome difficulties in class and status, she'll need a lot more practice and experience navigating the tribulations endemic to her own duchy.

Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #13
Tumblr media
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 Volume 1 (Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 4 by Miya Kazuki My rating: 4 of 5 stars A royal education is for reflection, focus, and fortitude. A royal education enables self-discovery. A royal education is a privilege for those whose fortunes are known, yet not entirely fulfilled. The Royal Academy is about to get blown up by a tiny girl with dark-blue hair and way too much mana for her own good. Lady Rozemyne awakens from two years of slumber and is almost immediately forced to attend the Royal Academy in the Sovereignty, the nation's central district. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v13 quietly and conveniently eschews the awkward and vastly unresolved conclusions of the previous narrative arc and nudges readers in the direction of something entirely different: Rozemyne goes to the rich kids' school and causes all sorts of havoc. The young woman has the academy's two-story library in her sights, but before she can even step foot among those hallowed stacks, she must first conquer weeks of intense study, socializing with archnobles, and a half-dozen pass-fail tests on geography, mathematics, history, music, practical magecraft, and more. She'll be fine, right? Ferdinand prophesied misfortune was on the horizon, but what's a guy to do, knowing full well that Rozemyne is a beast when books are involved? ("I have faith in your abilities," p. 117). Regardless, readers encounter a great deal of worldbuilding in this volume. New maps. New characters. New alliances. New enemies. New frenemies. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v13 sets the stage for a lot to happen. For example, readers follow characters as they move through their first-year magecraft lessons on mana control, highbeast creation, mana compression, and schtappe acquisition/creation. It's a lot to take in, and each academy instructor responsible for these lessons provides varying detail and information that fill in a lot of the gaps this series has ignored for ages. Naturally, the author puts their own twist on things. Rozemyne invents another new manner of mana control. Rozemyne causes a bit of a ruckus with Lessy, her unconventional ("abnormal") highbeast. And, apparently, Rozemyne snares the material to create her schtappe in a quietly exceptional way. To the last of these, one wonders if the author will return to the quirky circumstances that saw the young woman acquire the "divine will" (pseudo-sentient crystal power source) that becomes her schtappe; after all, Rozemyne is clearly the most powerful character in the country, it's only a matter of time until someone else challenges her on it. This is a good volume. Notwithstanding the novel's painful segues out of old conflicts and into those yet to form, the book's character development takes keen and purposeful strides. Wilfried, for example, after two years of playing catch-up to his brilliant (and incapacitated younger sister), has matured into a decent kid. He's still somewhat naïve and emotionally vulnerable, but he's more circumspect. His main problem no longer concerns living up to the expectations of the Aub, but of outmaneuvering his scheming cousin, Detlinde, the daughter of the nefarious Georgine of Ahrensbach. Other, newer characters are quite fun. Hartmut, an apprentice archscolar and ally, is essentially a miniature Justus; he's reliable and intelligent, but he's too nosy for his own good. Professor Hirschur, the dorm supervisor for Ehrenfest, is a bit of a mad scientist; she's hilariously obsessed with studying Rozemyne, and the author also reveals she had instructed Ferdinand back in the day (Hirschur: "You clearly have no self-awareness whatsoever," p. 242). But none of this matters. Not really. Because the Royal Academy's library is almost within reach. True, Rozemyne nearly causes an interduchy incident by totally snubbing royalty (Anastasius, the second prince). True, Rozemyne accidentally scares the daylights out of people by inadvertently bringing to life two long-slumbering magical tools that assist the academy's librarian. Now, all this intrepid young woman has to do is ace her entrance exams, force all of her student peers from Ehrenfest to ace their entrance exams, and keep her head down. She'll be fine, right?

Book Review: ‘Ascendance of a Bookworm’ #7
Tumblr media
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 2 Volume 4 (Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part 2 by Miya Kazuki My rating: 5 of 5 stars The shortest but most dramatic volume of the novel series thus far, ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM #7 sets into motion several converging elements: Myne's final puzzle piece of printmaking, an anonymous outside threat to Myne's entourage, and a known internal threat to the temple's stability. Little Myne is doing everything she can to keep her head up and her eyes forward as the number of challenges bloom and multiply. She has allies in the High Priest, Benno, her family, and elsewhere. But the brilliant librarian-to-be has plenty of enemies as well. ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM #7 brings to light an extensive and far-reaching scheme to bring the commoner apprentice shrine maiden to heel. Nobility near and far have heard tale of the little girl with unusual stores of magic who refuses to behave. Could they manifest a foolproof scheme to steal away the girl for themselves? Readers hungering for a neat and tidy convergence of the story arc's many odds and ends will be pleased with the author's solution. Myne is a fun character who continues to amuse and inspire. She continuously pushes others to do their best and be the best versions of themselves. Delia, for example, goes on one seriously wild ride in terms of character development. The emotional firebrand continues to make mistakes out of genuine interest, only to double back and suffer grave consequences for her behavior. Myne, as always, gives the girl one opportunity after another to own up to her errant ways. Another example is a new character, Heidi, a chemist employed by the ink guild. Heidi is a scatterbrained scientist whose curiosity and hunger for knowledge overrides almost every programmatic duty to which she must abide as the heir to a local ink shop. Her obsessive behavior and ribald loyalty reminds readers that good people come in all types. The showdown toward the conclusion of ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM #7 finally pits the interests of the nobility against the interests of Myne and her family. Indeed, will the young apprentice shrine maiden be involuntarily adopted by a rich noble for safekeeping? Will she be crudely sold, for a modest sum, to a foreigner who disobeys local laws? Or will the girl lose herself while struggling to protect those closest to her? Will she die? Myne fights, earns a few scratches, and defends what is hers. It's great to see actual magic use claim greater and greater prominence in the story's critical moments. At Myne's side are her attendants, her family, and the High Priest, Ferdinand, who lays down a serious butt-whipping when the time calls for it. A cleverly written surprise sneaks into the narrative's final 45 pages or so, concerning Myne's fateful future with the Eherenfest nobility. Readers will feel happily conflicted about the revelation, but the author does a great job of staying true to the characters, their needs, and their motives. The novel series' next arc will likely focus on Myne's haphazard attempts to fit into high society. Hopefully, she doesn't cause too much chaos. Then again, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad thing.
