I finally watched both versions of the musical and I thought I would give a little mini-review of my thoughts on both performances. I downloaded the musicals from nyaa.si and I would recommend them to anyone interested, but take note that they clock in at about 3 hours and 15 minutes each, there are about 30 minutes before each play starts and a 15-20 minute intermission in the middle that are simple title markers (this was streamed online and I think that is where the copies were made), but still it is a long watch - and there are two of them! I do recommend both as the different performers brought something a little different to the roles and I think both teams did a great job.
The musical covers part one of the light novels, and the songs and voice overs are often used to speed thru the material and cover large segments of the story. There were no subtitles, but if you know the story it really isn't difficult to follow along, at least it wasn't for me. It was clearly made for kids and families, so the language is simple. I was actually pleased at how much of the story it covered, not all the characters get as much focus, but all the basics are covered pretty well.
This is typical of the anime to Japanese live-action musicals I've seen before, these are not big productions like a broadway show, they tend to stick to the story and try and adapt it pretty closely, but are definitely done on a budget ^_^
The play is structured with Ferdinand learning about Myne's life thru the mind-reading device as she (Adult Urano) tells him the story of her life as a commoner. I can't help but think that if this was the real Ferdinand, Urano choosing to tell her story thru song would be most annoying to him, lol
Yuka Iguchi, the voice actress for Myne in the anime, does the voice over work. I really like how they captured the various moments, and the voice over aspect really worked well, as so much of the time we are in Myne's head, so including it was a smart choice as her original self's feeling and thoughts are a major part of Urano/Myne's story. I also liked how they displayed the mana powers throughout the show.
Gunther and Effa were just as you would imagine, both well performed. I really liked Effa's voice, and Gunther fits the bold and brash Gunther to a tee.
Benno was fun, I think he was captured pretty well, his song is funny. Mark was appropriately Mark, I like how the actor committed to his closed eye look, lol. Otto was is his cheeky self, I missed Corrina though.
Gustav / Bezewanst is played by the same actor, and he really hammed it up, lol. I kinda like how they go all out on his less than scrupulous 'tastes' as the High Bishop, the actor clearly had fun with his dual roles and Ferdinand's frustration with him is funny.
Ferdinand was appropriately stern, didn't like the wig on him though, felt unflattering to the actor, I don't know the wig was a miss, maybe it was the hair behind the ears. The actor did fine, not much for Ferdinand to do in part one. He is basically used as a frame work to ask questions and receive exposition when needed. He has a few numbers at the end that were fine, but well he is Ferdinand, too subtle to be 'entertaining' at least in this part of the series.
The main difference between the two versions are of course the kid performers: Myne, Lutz, Tulli, and Frieda - everyone else is the same. I don't want to compare the kids too much, but I thought it I should give a few thoughts.
Team A was essentially the Matinée Show, or the one with the younger, less experienced kids. Team B was the Soirée Show, which would be the main show, all the kids in the Soirée show are lightly older and give more 'mature' performances. I feel both have their charms, the younger kids feel more like kids, and the older kids feel more seasoned and professional in their performances, definitely stronger, more confident singers all around too. If the quality of the singing is important to you, then you will prefer the Soirée for the singing.
The main character Myne is played by Aoi Ikemura (Team A, Age 8, perhaps 7 when it was filmed) and she is a real cutie! Honestly, she made for a perfect Myne in age and size, she is so tiny and yet full of gremlin energy that she captures Myne really well in her on stage performance. She did a really good job with the dramatic moments too, you could hear the emotion in her voice. I was really moved by her performance overall, she is obviously so happy to be there (on stage, probably her first lead performance) that it rubs off on you. She is very likable.
Aoi Ikemura feels more raw and natural in her performance, especially as a singer - she goes in and out of tune often, doesn't sound bad, but it is noticeable in that it sounds like a regular kid who hasn't mastered their singing voice. I don't mind her singing, but then again I don't mind a raw singer, especially if it fits the characterization, but if you prefer a more professional sound, Akari's voice is much stronger.
Akari Miura (Team B, Age 12) is also very good, she is a better, more consistent performer, and is the far better singer. She is older and it shows in her more seasoned performance overall. If they were to make a recording of this, her voice work and singing is already record quality. It feels like a CD worthy performance, imho. Honestly the only negative I can come up with is that she feels too old by comparison, but that is not really a knock on her or her performance, but just the reality of any child roles. I liked her performance, but I think I liked Aoi's Myne slightly better, simply because she fit my image of the role so perfectly (I also watched it first, so perhaps that's influenced me too). But hands down, Akari is the stronger performer, she never missed a note and is also likable in the role.
Of course Myne has to carry the entire show, there are few moments where she isn't on stage, but Lutz also plays a pretty big secondary role. Ayumi Misak (Team A) plays Lutz more like how I think of him, a kinda quiet, serious kid. Seira Ina (Team B) has a lot of charisma, the boy can't help letting his charming self shine through, he is a little too smilie, lol (Is that too harsh? he always has a smile on his face :) They both give good performances and handle the emotional parts well.
Tulli didn't get much to do, she didn't even get a solo song, or anything. She is mostly included in the group or family numbers. Both actresses are cute and perform their roles well.
Frieda gets a couple of song and scene highlights, I like the outfit they give her, and both actresses do a fine job.
Overall I really enjoyed watching the musical, even if it was a tad long, lol wish it was subtitled, but I know the story so well that I really didn't have any problems following along with the story. Will there be musicals for any of the other parts? I really can't see how they could pull off the other parts, part one is short and a simple and the easiest to adapt in this format.
It does make me wonder if we will ever get a live-action drama for AoB, would it work or would it eventually need too big a budget to pull off, at least for the later parts? Asking too much?
Anyone else watch these?

Where are you reading aob webnovel 🥺 official translation cuts alot of bonus chapters and I can only find volume 1 and 2
i use the original site + the google page translate extension, which basically just adds a bit to the url that google translates it all. it has a bit of confusion with pronouns and names, but it's readable!
#ascendance of a bookworm#overall it has a lot of flaws but fuelling the fixation comes before all else

Book Review: 'Ascendance of a Bookworm' #20 (4.8)
Ascendance of a Bookworm #20 (4.8) by Miya Kazuki, You Shiina, Quof

adventure
fantasy
magic
library science
librarian
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Back at home, things should be peaceful. Unless, of course, that home happens to be the Ehrenfest the Eighth, and the annual Archduke Conference is approaching. Lady Rozemyne aims to pass the time by studying in advance of her third year of schooling and returning to her workshop-managing ways. Regrettably, trouble is around the corner.
ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v20 introduces a rather late-in-the-game narrative shift on the part of Ehrenfest's adversaries, but the lateness and abruptness of the move merely emphasizes its severity. In brief, while Rozemyne's return home comes with the usual array of scolding, considering her successes (and antics) at the Royal Academy, her return also brings to the fore a dozen new interduchy disasters that require fine-tuning. At length, Ahrensbach is a duchy on the decline (e.g., poor agronomy, declining aub, lack of mana-wielding nobility), and the venomous Lady Georgine is keen to give her grift one last shot. Can Lady Georgine take out both Ehrenfest and Lord Ferdinand, in one brash move?
Lady Georgine's designs on Ehrenfest may be sharpening, but it's also abundantly clear she's willing to sacrifice her own family to get what she wants. Lady Detlinde, her daughter, may be a bit cocky, but she probably doesn't deserve what her mother has in store for her.
Altogether, this is a curious volume. Not a lot happens to progress the story, but much of the book's events are very much akin to what one might expect of a middle-arc tome just before the rising action. Perhaps the author didn't plan this all too well. As such, change (or the threat of change) is on the horizon, and characters must decide how invested they are in combatting or navigating it. The true danger and fear associated with that change is not as strenuous as simply not knowing the context of an enemy's movements. It's an amoeba conflict. Whether the next volume or two deliver, or are merely anticlimactic, is unknowable.
On the better end of things, Rozemyne's pre-third-year lessons are interrupted when Ferdinand is called to join the Archduke Conference in person. And yet, comically, Rozemyne and her siblings decide to help out Lord Bonifatius in conducting various aub work. One suspects Rozemyne will ace her coursework in the coming semester due to her executing actual, practical aub work rather than studying the previous year's materials.
ASCENDANCE OF A BOOKWORM v20 also, positively, offers some much-needed background information on Ferdinand's personal history. When the High Priest's safety is threatened by outside parties, Rozemyne takes it upon herself to berate the young man until he reveals (part of) his origin. Ties to royalty? Something to do with a foreign princess? And if a deal with Ahrensbach goes sour, would Rozemyne go on a rampage to save him from harm? Ferdinand is shocked (and warmed) at the thought of so many others caring for his safety. But at the same time, the guy's turbulent past may be nothing compared to what lies ahead.

I’ve only watched two episodes so far, but 本好きの下剋上 ~司書になるためには手段を選んでいられません~ (can you, perchance, tell that it might be based on a light novel? can you?!) is, for once, actually a different take on the isekai genre. Motosu Urano (even the name’s a pun) just landed a job as a librarian when she’s killed by truck-kun and reborn into the frail body of 5 year old peasant girl マイン. No I will not transcribe it and take a side in the roughly 400 different transcriptions of her name used throughout subs and scanlations.
Problem is, this girl whose whole life has always revolved around books now resides in random-anime-medieval-Europe-but-a-bit-more-idyllic with almost no books and a literacy rate around the single digits. She’s got no special magic superpowers aside from some theoretical knowledge gained from reading everything. She wasn’t even an otaku, so no genre savviness so far.
But at least she’s a shipper!
This one looks very promising so far. Not quite as lighthearted as noukin, but still fun and cute without immediately devolving into a power fantasy (all the while not being anywhere near as dark as Re:Zero).

1/12/21
Time for my November Immersion Overview!
Admittedly, I'm four reviews behind, but I was so much in the immersion zone this month that I kept putting off writing them all. No regrets, since that's four completed reads and a million monthly streak still going strong! I'll try my best to put them out for you guys before the year ends.
As usual, I'm excited for a brand new month of immersion, especially because a bunch of stuff I've been waiting to finish releasing are now ready for me to binge over the holidays.
Books
I was self assessing a lot recently, and I figured out that I've been quickly gaining speed reading in 横書き but going slowly for 縦書き, which makes sense because I've spent a lot of my time reading visual novels. Can't beat reading horizontally for most of my life I guess.
To combat the problem, I tried reading books again with some success, since I actually finished one that I stalled for months on end. Tried to use pomodoro, but because every chapter is a different length, I find it very easy to break concentration as compared to visual novels that, despite having to make choices, I can just continue reading 'til the point of almost exhaustion before quitting for the day.
Not giving up though, because I discover new interesting reads everyday, and do have the desire to read all of them one fine day. Just have to keep pushing forward.
My reads for the month totalling 103.32k characters: 本好きの下剋上 司書になるためには手段を選んでいられません 第ニ部 兵士の娘II, かがみの孤城, 君の名は, くまクマ熊ベアー 2, and 三日間の幸福 (completed finally! Review soon.)
Drama
Only one drama?! Pathetic, I know. An absolute shame that all of the things I wanted to watch were either hard to find or still airing. I have come prepared for December though!
着飾る恋には理由があって
So happy that what I did watch was pretty good though! 横浜 流星 keeps playing chef characters in the shows I have seen with him as lead, and its so attractive it should be illegal. (.////.)
Really enjoyed this show; it hits my standard for 女性向け dramas - relatable and cool female lead, interesting side characters, and to top it off, the goodest dog you ever did see! Just a bunch of young adults figuring out their lives like normal people without all the unrealistic drama and scandal that's usually in romance shows.
Podcasts & Youtube
I've also come to realize that all the reading I have been doing have actually started to put my listening behind a bit, and because I've been learning to bake a lot of different things recently, I needed something to listen to while waiting for things to rise in the oven. Figured podcasts were the way to go, because I haven't touched them in a while, and they're relatively much harder than watching content, since they have no context aside from maybe a short description per episode.
4989 Shiku Hakku American Life Podcast
Easy to follow and relatable since she talks a lot about her English language learning journey in America.
ひいきびいき
Probably still my favorite podcast despite only listening to a few episodes since it requires me to concentrate on it a lot more than American Life, but I really love that this is basically two people having a conversation, and their banter and verbal expressions are a really good reference to imitate for future output attempts.
自分に換えるゼロ空間
Stumbled upon this on Spotify, and listened to a few episodes. Can't tell if I like it or not yet, but there are so many episodes that she could easily be potential shadowing material for me, so I'm hoping I get into her content more.
フェルミー漫画大学
Technically, this is not at all a podcast but I like listening to it in the background as if it is, and honestly I've been kind of surprised at the range of non-fiction topics this has.
Visual Novels
Read 1.02 million characters.
At this point, I've come to accept that I've truly fallen deep into the 乙女ゲー hole, and that there are no signs of me stopping or finding a way out.
Finished both あやかしごはん おかわり, 紫影のソナーニル -What a beautiful memories-, and I will try my best to write my reviews for them as well. (´v`;)
The tricky one here is エンジェルビーツ!, something I stalled way back in July. For the most part, I agree with the sentiment that if you're not enjoying something drop it and move on (and I technically did for 4 months), but I'm also stubborn, and it upsets me that everyone raves about how good Key VNs are and I have yet to finish even one.
I said earlier that choices in VNs do not break my concentration, but if it is as many, as pointless, and as close to each other like it is for Angel Beats (and for the couple of other Key VNs I did start and stall as well) then it becomes a problem.
Starting this again, I realized that despite following a guide, it just goes all over the place, sometimes choices bringing me to the middle of a different route - I was not ready for that kind of chaos at all. Still, I have goal before the year ends, and I'm going to do my best to beat this game despite it being a skip hell fest and unfortunately only mildly funny for my taste (the jokes in this got old so fast I...٩(๑`^´๑)۶).
-☆-
Thanks for stopping by and reading! I'll catch you all again next time.
Now to actually go write those four reviews....ヾ(。>﹏<。)ノ゙
