Happy Father's Day 🎊
Every year, I make posts showcasing some great fathers I've seen (in TV shows, games or films) or read in books (which I've yet to discover!). Previously, I had mentioned Raymond Reddington from The Blacklist and Joe West from The Flash.
Before I write about this particular father, I want to include some honourable mentions: Yondu from Guardians of the Galaxy, Harry Bosch from the TV show Bosch and Kazuma Kiryu from the game Yakuza 6.
So, this year, the award for the best father goes to... John Krasinski (aka. Lee Abbott) from the movie, A Quiet Place (although I would also give the Best mother award to Emily Blunt too. What she goes through in this movie is insane, but she's a remarkably strong character).
Not only did I love the movie for its concept of staying silent to survive these creepy creatures, but I loved the family dynamics. I loved how they communicated with each other through sign language and still tried to have fun despite the pressure of not making a sound. As John is a father in real life, I felt this translated really well into his performance too.
Now I'm gonna get into the spoilery parts of the movie (you have been warned):
In the beginning, we see the horrific moment where the family lose their youngest child to these creatures because of a noisy toy airplane. I assumed in the trailer that John gets there on time, but sadly, he didn't.
This moment triggers an anxiety in John throughout the movie. You see how he grows overprotective over his children, watching out for his daughter especially, who dislikes not being able to freely move around. Even though no one was to blame, John blames himself for his child's death.
The sad thing is that he relieves his pain by sacrificing himself for his wife and children at the end. It was honestly a heart breaking moment to see him tell his children he loves them before screaming out for the creature.
Every one deserves a father like John, someone who would give their life to keep you safe. What made me really like Joe more was when he was talking about directing the movie and how his intention was not to create a horror movie but to focus on the love present within a family, which I felt he achieved.
Happy Father's Day, John Krasinski 😊
