What, in your opinion, are the most iconic country songs? Good or bad, but totally iconic

So. In country music there are a lot of standard answers. And for this topic, a lot of those answers are gonna include songs like He Stopped Loving Her Today, Coal Miners Daughter, Your Cheatin Heart, Will The Circle Be Unbroken.

He Stopped Loving Her Today is the “right” answer when asked about the greatest country song of all time. Which the song is perfectly fine. I like the song. But honestly, it’s not even George’s best song lol. But I suppose there’s something to account for its far reaching impact. The song transcends the genre.

Coal Miners Daughter, a plain telling of one’s humble beginnings. 10/10 love Loretta Lynn she can do no wrong

Your Cheatin Heart, released right after Hank’s death. Of course he was a prolific songwriter, but we must admit his premature death played a role in his name becoming a household name, a name so large it still looms over the genre 70 years later. Take a man who died tragically at the age of 29 in the prime of his career, combine it with a song that strikes a nerve with people, you have yet another song that transcends the genre.

Will The Circle Be Unbroken is pretty much the pinnacle of country music. Sadness and joy and hope and all that the human experience encompasses. A catchy little melody with catchy lyrics. It goes back to the beginnings of the genre and I hope it lives forever.

Now for bad ones… I mean achy breaky heart sucks and played big time into the shift away from soulful melodies and lyricism for the sake of popularity.

But that feels too easy.

So let me be contrarian and say a lot of 40s honkytonk music sucks. We’ll Go HonkyTonkin, If You Got The Money I Got The Time… these songs suck, I’m sorry. If any artist today released those songs as they are, us music snobs would never let them hear the end of it. We only sing along to it cuz of nostalgia. And the men who sing these songs deserve our utmost respect as a whole… just not for these particular types of songs lol
