Helen Love- Yeah Yeah We’re Helen Love (Damaged Goods)

At some point in the late 90’s or early 00’s someone turned me on to Cardiff, Wales pop band Helen Love (it might have been Honeyrider’s Gary Stickland…who I believe played with them for a time) and I’ve never looked back. As far as I can tell it’s a duo of Helen on vocals and a mysterious gent on instruments. The songs are fun and very catchy….oh and they love The Ramones. It’s bubblegummy with a capitol B and that pumping keyboard never stops (you won’t want it to).

Did I say that they really love The Ramones? (you’ll notice on of their song titles): “Joey Ramoney,” “Debbie Loves Joey,” etc.

The Damaged Goods label has put together the 30-plus song comp that features many of the bands best songs (duh…..it’s a best of).  Dig in to ace cuts like “Punk Boy,” “Bubblegum,” “King of Kung Fu” “Happyhardcore,” “Great in Formula One, “Beat Him Up” and too many more.

Again, to be clear, this is real bubblegummy (as if you can’t tell from what I’ve already written) so dive in with an open mind and ears and I think you’ll fall in love with the one and only Helen Love. I mean, you must!

The Photocopies- Amateur Dramatics (self released)

At this point I’ve reviewed so many Photocopies’ releases that I almost feel like the band’s personal publicist. UK expat Sean Turner has been releasing stuff at a breakneck pace since last year (or at least that was when I discovered him) and he doesn’t seem to be slowing down (nor do we want him to).

This is another 5-song EP where Turner jumps out of the gate on the fuzz pop of ‘This, That And the Other” while the guitars get a bit dirtier on the more sinister “Beaten by a Girl.”  Also, “Before You Do It Again” is another Photocopies melodic classic. The two other songs, “You Really Blew It” and “Bottom of the Barrel” both pass the litmus test as well. I feel like Turner could write this stuff in his sleep (and probably does).

If you like pop of the C86/JAMC/Honeyrider variety then The Photocopies will be right up your alley. There’s five more strikes here!
