This is a bit of an involved question so if it’s to hard to answer please feel free to ignore. I’m brand new in recovery struggling with an ED i’ve had an on and off relationship with for 6 years. While i’m doing this, i’m living at home in a emotionally toxic environment that just isn’t contributing to a safe space to recover at all. I guess my question is how do you make the space u need to recover when it seems like that doesn’t exist? Is it possible to recover without a support system?
i’m so sorry that your living environment is toxic. and, amazing that you’re pursuing recovery! an unsafe home is certainly not helpful in a healing process of any kind, but recovery isn’t impossible.
first, i’d think very hard about possible alternatives to living there. forgive me if this is something you’ve thought to death, but often there is like, one idea that feels to much to ask, a friend or other family, that might just work if you did ask. you deserve a safe space. don’t decide on a no for other people, let them answer.
if an alternative living arrangement is not gonna happen, retreat to your room! make the space as comfortable as possible–i’m not big on inspirational graphics lol but are there affirming reminders you could put up? something #aesthetic that might have recovery significance? something that tells you you’re here for you when you look at it.
bring all the food you can to your room. distract with netflix. eat, distract, eat, distract. if possible, set your schedule so that you minimize running into people in the kitchen. get as much safe/alone time in there as you can. do you have a car? fast food in the car is extremely valid. as much as you can afford, eat out. again, fast food is wonderfully accessible and recovery-friendly, and they have long hours that you could spend there. (you could also, like, bring illicit snacks to a public library but i didn’t say it.) eat w friends if you’re able, and consider sharing w them what you’re going thru if that feels safe.
you don’t have to recover without a support system if you have access to the internet. irl is lovely and in many cases preferable, but there are many facebook groups (just as an example) for recoverers. here’s NEDA’s list of low cost options. i admin a support group which you’d be welcome in if you decide to use the homeodynamic recovery method. if it’s relevant, there are also trans-specific online groups, and virtual groups for women of color. you have options.
sending you so much love & light as you navigate a dark place xx
