hi hello this is kinda part 6.5/7 of that comic series I’ve been posting. I have lotsa thoughts abt a lot of other points in this timeline but this is the only other one I’ve done something with oops.

Law huffed, hurrying across his room to find a sweater to take refuge in. “As I’ve told you,” he hissed, rummaging through a drawer, “I’ll be waiting as long as possible.” 

Luffy sighed, flopping to the foot of their bed with his head in his hands. “That’s what I’m saying,” he reasoned. “I think it’s been as long as possible.” 

Law rolled his eyes at his husband. “Well, you think wrong,” he insisted, freeing an oversized black hoodie from his dresser. He pulled it on and observed himself in the mirror. “I’m hardly showing, and I have plenty of clothes like this.” He nodded, satisfied with the way the fabric swallowed him. “Honestly I may be able to conceal the whole thing without even using my powers,” this part was muttered to himself.

”Why though?!” Luffy whined. “My crew knows!”

“And I wish they didn’t!” If looks could kill, Law would have been guilty of mariticide and, in this moment, he didn’t even think he’d regret it. “Do we have to go through this again? I don’t want my crew to know I’m pregnant. It’s bad enough that Bepo made me tell Penguin and Shachi.” 

“Why’s it bad that your brothers know we’re having a baby?” The irritation in the Pirate King’s voice was becoming increasingly familiar to Law, it’d been weeks of this conversation and he was, quite frankly, sick of it. 

“I can’t believe you keep making me have this conversation,” Law sat at his desk and crossed his arms tightly across his chest. “At this point it’s just insensitive.” 

“Did you forget we’re pirates, Torao?” 

This was a new talking point. Law quirked an eyebrow. “And that means you can be insensitive?”

”I mean, kinda? – But wait, that's not the point,” Luffy sighed heavily, speaking slowly like he was explaining something to a child. “Your crew should know the kind of coverage you need.” 

Law shot to his feet. “You’ve proven my point,” he said sternly. “I don’t need additional cover. I’m just as capable as I’ve always been.”

”Torao—“ 

“I’m not having this conversation again.” He waved his hand dismissively and swiftly sent himself to the deck of his ship. 

Left behind, Luffy let himself indulge in a long, frustrated groan.

“You don’t understand,” Usopp implored. “If I were in his shoes I’d be sensitive about it too, okay?” 

Luffy crossed his legs on top of the crate he was perched on in Usopp and Franky’s workshop. “But he’s always so…I dunno…practical,” he sighed. “And not telling your crew — y’know, the ones you fight with — that you’re fucking pregnant is totally not practical!” 

“I dunno, dude,” Franky offered from his work bench. “You sure that’s why you’re so hung up on this?”

Luffy’s face scrunched up at the question. “What else would it be about?”

Franky lifted his welding mask and shared a knowing look with Usopp. They nodded back and forth and whatever nonverbal conversation they were having led to Franky sighing. “Okay, okay. Think about it. When’s the last time you ever saw anyone land a hit on Traffy?” 

That was a tough question to answer. Truthfully, most pirates wouldn’t touch the pirate king or his consort. The new World Government still required levels and levels of approvals to engage with either of them, and even then it’s not like Koby would grant that approval unless a lot of things had suddenly changed.

”Doesn’t matter,” Luffy decided. 

“Exactly,” Franky continued. “Now tell me, why else would you want the Hearts to know?”

Another tough one. What other reason could there be?

”They were the last ones to know about you two being together,” Usopp added helpfully. Franky cleared his throat, clearly he’d wanted Luffy to get to that fact on his own. Usopp shrunk into himself sheepishly in apology. 

“Yeah, I still don’t get why Torao was so embarrassed,” Luffy muttered, paying no mind to his friends' silent exchange.

”And how’d it feel knowing he was embarrassed?” Franky encouraged.

”…I…” Luffy looked down at his hands in his lap. “…Didn’t like it.”

”Bingo!” Usopp cheered. “But it wasn’t that he was embarrassed of you, was he?”

Having finally caught up to the conversation, Luffy rolled his eyes. “No,” he whined. “He’s insecure.” 

“Exactly!”

”But he’s not like that anymore!” 

“And this isn’t the same situation as before,” Usopp insisted. “You’re asking a trans guy to walk into a room full of people and say ‘hey everyone, I have a uterus!’”

”But they’re his nakama! And everyone knows Ikakku’s trans and it’s not like anyone’s ever been stupid about it,” Luffy pouted. 

“No one’s gonna be stupid about it,” the sniper agreed. “But that doesn’t mean they can’t subconsciously change parts of how they interact with him, even if it’s only while he’s pregnant.” Usopp huffed a laugh. “Even if he weren’t a guy I’d think someone like Traffy’d want to keep it under wraps. When Kaya was pregnant tons of randos wanted to touch her belly all the time. It’s fuckin’ weird.” 

“…Torao does hate it when people touch him,” Luffy muttered. 

“And Ikakku talks about being trans, those are conversations she chose to have. I get to talk about it if I feel like it, like only when I'm comfortable enough to. I’ll bet Traffy hates not having a say in the matter,” Usopp sighed in empathy.

Luffy straightened up at that realization and a momentary silence fell over the trio. 

Franky cleared his throat. “Just keep an eye on him if anyone’s dumb enough to fight us,” he said in summation. “He’s his own captain. Let him handle his crew.” 

He hated to admit it, but Luffy knew he was right. He offered a grunt of acknowledgement and nothing else.

Luffy returned to the captain’s quarters of the Polar Two greeted by the sounds of his husband emptying his stomach in the en-suite bathroom. It wasn’t an uncommon state to find him in these days, but it certainly didn’t make it any better. He made his way to the ajar door and poked his head in. Law sat on the floor, forehead resting on his arm that was slung across the toilet. Upon noticing his company, he shot his husband a glare.

”Lunch taking revenge?” Luffy offered light-heartedly. 

Law held his glare for a moment longer before allowing his face to soften slightly. “What else is new,” he grumbled, looking away. He decided his stomach was settling enough to relocate so he flushed the toilet and moved to get to his feet. Luffy was there in a flash, gently taking his arm.

”I don’t need any help,” Law sighed, pulling his arm back and reaching for his toothbrush. Luffy hovered, waiting for him to finish brushing his teeth before he spoke.

”I’m sorry,” he offered, hanging back in the doorframe of the bathroom while Law went to sit at his desk. 

“Are you now?” Law cracked open a book, pulled a few pages of loose leaf from a precarious pile on the desk, and started to scribble on them. 

“Yeah,” he replied, tentatively crossing the room to stand behind his husband. “Usopp and Franky reminded me that when you didn’t tell your crew we were together it wasn’t ‘cause you were embarrassed to be with me.”

Law placed his pen flat on his desk. “…That’s what this has been about?”

Luffy wrapped his arms around the other captain’s shoulders and nuzzled into his hair. “Maybe.”

They stayed like that in silence for a few long moments.

”I’m not embarrassed to be having your baby,” Law muttered after a while.

”I know.” 

“I’m embarrassed to be having a baby period.” 

“I know.”

“I’m certainly not embarrassed of her.”

“I know.”

”And I’m their captain,” Law continued. “I don’t want them thinking I’m less capable because…”

”They’d never think you’re not capable. They may be more protective though, and I get that you don’t want that.” 

Law nodded. “…Yes,” he agreed, leaning back into his husband’s embrace. 

“But if someone’s dumb enough to come after us, you can’t do anything stupid okay?”

That earned a hearty laugh. “Look who’s talking,” Law chuckled, looking up into Luffy’s eyes. 

“I mean it!” Luffy insisted. “You’re super strong. But…” He let his hand travel down to rest protectively on the front pocket of Law’s hoodie. 

“I know,” Law whispered. “If I’m being honest, I have been thinking about your point. It’d be…practical for them to know.” 

Luffy grinned at that. “And you do love practical.” 

Law nodded pensively. 

“Anyway, you tell ‘em when you’re ready. I’ll get off your ass about it.” In one swift motion Luffy hooked an arm under his husband’s legs and whisked him out of his chair bridal style. 

“Excuse me,” Law protested. “I have work to do!” 

“Yeah, I got stuff to do too!” the other captain laughed, turning on his heel to close the short distance to their bed.

sabo - i have never before seen a character so very much be aromantic without being an implied aromantic character. hes not repulsed by romance its just that hes preoccupied with overthrowing the government and supporting his brothers at all times, he has other things to worry abt. gender, could be anything and could honestly fluctuate depending on the day. at the very least, he fist fights transphobes on the daily and in a modern au would hangout at iva’s drag bar and fight anyone who acts weird

yamato - if you dont think yamato is a transman i want you to get away from my blog okay thanks. that isnt a hc, thats a fact and ppl who disagree are weird in my eyes. sexuality wise, he could honestly like ANYONE, but he just finds himself drawn to men more often than not (ace) so if you were to ask him he’d just say “oh men are cool, women are pretty but you know i cant find myself drawn to them” and he thinks hes normal get a load of this guy

kaku - most proudly bisexual guy to exist. i think he started to think more to himself about things during his time at water 7. he could also be okay with it and live his life that way without any shame because he wasnt an assassin working for the government there, he was kaku so yk, he could actually openly be with whoever he wanted. gender, cis man but if you talk about him using they/them only he’d just laugh and not correct you

lucci - hah gay. him and kaku probably got married in water 7. cp9 questioned kaku for marrying lucci, meanwhile pauile just questioned to himself how things would work cause of the pigeon. lucci is such a gay man, he fucking trans too dont ask me how i know i just know. Ai can sniff out my fellow transguys from a mile away alright

kalifa - oh i love it when women hate on men but the second a woman shows up she acts all flirty and confident. totally heterosexual of you kalifa. no but shes such a man hating lesbian, she always has been and could probably be due to men’s treatment of her during childhood which made her really not like most of them. i need to write out a backstory for her damn. oh and shes trans trust me on that one

koby - sometimes a lot of op characters will be inlove with luffy and never get their feelings returned, and one of those people is koby. yeah hes gay, and asexual he just kept discovering stuff like that when training under garp cause garp is so okay with everything, and then we incorporate more moments between him and helmeppo like in the live action where they sit and talk about stuff. koby realises hes gay and sighs. “that explains a lot…”

buggy - gaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy he doesnt like women he cant bring himself to he had his first tragic yaoi relationship as a teen and never looked back. gender is whatever you want it to be baby. freaky as all hell my GOD every time im reminded of the cross guild and what they do to buggy i just know. theyre so freaky

shanks - bisexual icon but hes been hung up on the same ex (buggy) for so many years that other romances are less prioritised cause “omg what if buggy comes back:}” get over it man he aint coming back for u. trans man, look at him and his pussy yeah thats a trans dude hell yeah

A few people have asked…

So here’s the 2.5 things that I didn’t love about the OPLA

[SPOILERS FOR OPLA BELOW]

Again, just to reiterate: I LOVED the Live Action. It was beautiful, lovely storytelling. Everyone involved put everything they had in it and you can really see that.  But there were some changes that I didn’t think were justified, and they were both in Arlong Park.  

1. The Cocoyasi Village Residents genuinely hating Nami. In the manga and anime it’s very heavily implied (and maybe outright said? I can’t remember) that the residents of Cocoyasi Village are AWARE that Nami is trying to save their town. They only act like they hate her to try and get her to stop sacrificing herself. I’m not entirely sure why the call to change that was made, but it made me really sad the way Nojiko treated her in the OPLA (especially after seeing the moment in the manga where she tells Nami that “tattoos are just decoration; they don’t actually mean anything!”). A lot of the decisions to cut scenes with young Nami and Nojiko (and just young Nami in general) really took the punch out of her backstory. 

2. Garp and Koby meeting up with Luffy in the East Blue. I actually REALLY loved the Garp/Koby/Helmeppo storyline up until the last moment. I think it added to the world building and showed us very early on how the World Government is morally questionable and how the world operates. It also helped close the gap of how Koby and Garp got to know each other and how he falls under his command. I really enjoyed following them along for the ride. Until Cocoyasi Village. There was something about that moment that felt…off? I don’t even know why. Maybe it was because Garp has NEVER approved of Luffy being a pirate. He knows Luffys resolve, but he would never say “I was testing you to make sure you wanted this path” and then basically grant his blessing. I know there had to be some kind of resolution between them, but I didn’t like the way it ended. I wish it had been more like the Water 7 moment. Garp felt far too serious the entire time (the only time i really remember him laughing was when Luffy fired the cannonball back at the marine ship).

Impel Down spoilers

2.5 This is so small but we KNOW that Buggy cannot travel without his feet (unless I’m misremembering?). He has a range and cannot move out of it. So his head hitching a ride to the Baratie is just so canon-breaking it HURT ME. I know it’s unlikely we’ll ever make it to Impel Down for that to be a problem (I genuinely think Skypiea would probably be the last arc the LA could cover, but Water 7/Enie’s Lobby could be done if the budget was big enough) but it just BOTHERED ME. WHY. WHY DID THEY DO THAT. I know there’s ways to fix it (maybe he can’t MOVE after a certain range, but can still be carried?) but STILL. 

That’s really it, honestly. I know a lot of people had gripes about Usopp and Syrup Village, but I liked the changes. I never felt like Usopp was overshadowed (plus, background character is the way he likes it honestly, keeps him away from danger). I liked that Kaya was so welcoming and a part of the bigger storyline, and I loved the way it took place in the mansion instead of on the beach. I was OBSESSED with the way they did the Baratie, Sanji’s interactions, Mihawk's reasoning for going to the Baratie, and how he left Zoro and Luffy. 

I. ATE. UP. the zolu content during the Baratie and Nami/Zoro sibling dynamic really coming out there. Oda approved the absolute BEST changes during Baratie specifically, hes so real for that. 

I’m going to watch it again with my family, maybe I’ll feel differently after I rewatch.  Again it’s imperative you guys understand I ADORED this show, and I NEED a season two IMMEDIATELY. It was fantastic and if you haven’t watched it, go do that right NOW.

Some OPLA Thoughts: Episode 5

Wow.

My post about the last episode started off with how Zoro's backstory (the portrayal of Kuina particularly) was the first thing in this adaptation to seriously disappoint me... Only to immediately follow that up with the best episode so far. I don't think I have anything negative to say about this one.

We've finally started to see that other side to Garp that I was worried had been edited out of the live action completely. That wilder, goofier side when confronted with his grandson as a pirate for the first time. That grayer portrayal of morality in this universe, when he and Koby talk about the Warlords.

I found it really interesting that Koby was so betrayed by the concept of the Warlords. I mean, I also think that's the right response, but it really hasn't been made clear yet in the live action that the World Government is super corrupt. Honestly-- I'm pretty sure I mentioned this in my post about the first or second episode-- they even toned down how much of a tyrant Morgan was. The anime made it really clear that the people of the town were just as scared of Morgan as they were of any potential pirates his unit was supposed to be protecting them from. In the live action, it could be read that Helmeppo was just an errant bad apple.

And speaking of! He's finally starting to come around. It's a prickly sort of friendship that he's building with Koby... but they are noticeably talking more-- and saying more. Those conversations aren't all insults and then stalking away in a huff like they have been up to this point. I didn't mention it in my last post, but Helmeppo had a line that really stuck out to me in episode four. It's still all argument about how they should be handling their duties in Syrup Village, but he's let his guard down enough to admit that he is jealous of the shine Garp's taken to Koby.

What stood out in this episode was his line about how Koby doesn't know shit about how the world works-- in reference to his disbelief about how the Government handles the Warlords. I was kind of ridiculing that... and kind of not. My immediate, knee-jerk reaction was along the lines of, "Really? Pampered, spoiled Helmeppo is going to lecture the boy who spent his childhood enslaved on a pirate ship about the harsh realities of the world?" But you know... That is a really interesting angle to take. That being the son of a high-ranking Navy captain, maybe Helmeppo has seen some of the injustices of how the World Government runs first-hand, and it would be great if that's what these two bond over in the live action.

Sanji's introduction has been great so far-- his fight scene looked fantastic-- and we haven't even gotten into the really hard-hitting stuff with his backstory with Zeff yet.

There were some interesting changes... but nothing that left me feeling uneasy about how it might impact the story as whole. I really hope they leave the whole issue with Don Krieg as the abridged version that it is right now. Honestly, that whole ordeal was really tedious to me in the original. I love that Nami was around for Zoro's duel in this version. (Though maybe a little disappointed that Sanji wasn't. I felt like witnessing that was a pretty major moment in him starting to understand what this insane crew is really all about.)

And Mihawk... Steven John Ward's portrayal of Mihawk is everything I was promised it would be. Really stole the show this episode.

The fight with Zoro was amazing. But also just his overall demeanor... and they gave him the best lines! Like, obviously the "I don't hunt rabbits with a cannon" one comes to mind-- in regards to only using that tiny knife against Zoro. But also, I loved his interaction with Luffy. The little, "Though I do like your hat" was such a great nod to his friendship(?) with Shanks... All of his moments were just so good.

I saw an interview with his actor where he talked about the secrecy behind the audition process-- how he didn't even know what role he was auditioning for until he got it. And how his response was to immediately call up his friends who are anime fans and ask them just how bad it would be if he fucked this up. XD

Which is exactly the response I would want. Any time I've had concerns about this show, it's always been about the writing. (And nothing too major has been messed up yet.) I've got no complaints about the acting. Everyone has killed their roles so far and brought exactly the energy to the table necessary to make this something special.

This is something that's been on my mind too ever since I saw it floating around. It's been on the backburner for a while that Blackbeard ship hanging around Egghead right before the big cutaway. Something we've left hanging as we moved into a second stage. General idea is that the two we've yet to account for are Catarina & Lafitte and they make sense as a shneaky pair...

Assuming it's actually the Blackbeard Pirates. Since we do see this bit with Koby and Perona in flashback and it's not like her or Moria were involved in the later fight, did those two just spooky spooky skedaddle? Pirates and all. It's a tight time frame but it does look like it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for Egghead and Hachinosu to be rather close, plus they kinda make a lot of sense if we're dropping the other shoe on Kuma. Garp was able to get there quick from the nearby Marine base. Something worth considering given how much Moria and Thriller Bark have factored in.

Of course, already mentioned how Moria is one of those faces you could do something with Kiku around. Just since the timing works and she's the only one with the extra incentive of stuff going down in Ringo. Honestly...how would Moria even feel towards Luffy at this point? Perona has a soft spot for his first mate and like, Luffy just proved his ass wrong and moved on but also was the dude who beat down Kaido. We have to start considering given how Egghead has unfolded that this flashback might leave us back in the main story with things radically different than expected. Gecko Moria is a believable X factor with a lot of potential.

Do you think the Straw Hats get touch-starved?

I’ve been getting into One Piece recently and the thought of getting isikaied into the show has been making its rounds in my head. Thinking of what I would do if allowed onboard has become my newest pastime so ima ramble about it.

Ofc I would do manual work and help out with the ship's cosmetics, maybe take on a little bit of everyone else’s work if they let me, but overall, what would be my role? Then I started thinking about how broken everyone is and I thought- what if I just played support?

And then the angst came rushing in-

So this is how touch-starved the straw hats are (in my POV ofc)

Luffy

I don’t think Luffy is a touch person

I mean yes the dude likes hugs and shit but I don’t think he’d die without them.

To me, Luffy comes off as someone who likes gifts or words of affirmation above everything else

Probably cus I see this guy as an aro/ace icon but that's just me

Usopp

Mans is starving but he wouldn’t realize it until literally the moment he gets crumbs

I think it’s made worse by the fact he’s thinking about Kaya almost as much as he is living in the moment (if that makes any sense)

If I were to offer him a cuddle sesh I think he’d legit think about it for a bit before turning me down out of respect for Kaya

But he be longing for physical affection bro I Mf know it

Sanji

Wants but won’t give in

As of right now, this man is a fucking s l a v e to Nami so I think that the same principle for Usopp would follow to Sanji. The only difference being his reaction would be more vocal and immediate.

“Absolutely not!”

That is to say, he definitely struggles with physical touch. I’m sure of it. There is something deep inside this boy that struggles when it comes to self-worth. I can’t place it yet but I can see it-

Zoro

I think he’d call me a whore? Idk why. But my mind is telling me that this man doesn’t need physical touch. What he needs is physical therapy for over-exerting himself.

Fr tho, if Zoro ever got the notion that he wants some hugs or platonic cuddles, I think it would be a struggle to come to terms with that.

Very much “I haven’t wanted/ needed this before, so why do I crave this now?” From that, I’d think he’d internalize that struggle until it’s something he can’t war over anymore.

He’d eventually get over himself and ask for a hug or putting his head on my lap when no one else is around/ when everyone else is asleep except us.

Nami

Oh Nami, my Nami. You do not trust easy.

You lie to yourself and strive in your own but I know that you will take anything you get girl

She’d only take side hugs if someone asked for a hug.

She doesn’t ask for one unless it’s after a life-or-death situation/something stressful. The same can be said for cuddles

I hope this bitch is pampered by someone she loves just as is not more than berries.

Honestly if it wasn't for the fact that he was a pervert, i'd put my money on Sanji but... i highly doubt that

i'm actually very pleasantly surprised. largely the stuff that is bad is stuff i expected and a lot of things are much better than i expected so like helleth yes we win

kobyyyyyyy perfect 100% i get why they're tying the marines in more for story purposes and idc honestly bc i get to see koby

helmeppo also good tho i could have done without seeing his full cheeks

as a fan there are a lot of small moments that really don't impact the overall story much but i did miss. like toppling the morgan statue. or sanji being present for the mihawk fight to see that devotion to a dream that motivates him to get on the sea. or the catboy being changed to a catgirl that one made me mad. but again does not affect the overall thing so w/e.

casting is so stupid spot on perfect and i've been saying that the whole time but good lord every new character is so insanely good

that said. they really desexied benn beckman. rip king.

why are luffy and usopp the only characters allowed to be fun. where is weird fun hardass grandpa garp. where is any major zoro dumbass moment. he's had a few but we can do better. oh my god i just realized jango wasn't here WHERE IS HE FUCK YOU. THE MENTION OF MIRRORBALL ISLAND IS NOT ENOUGH.

they did largely forget one piece is a comedy which i literally voiced as a worry out loud with my human mouth like an hour before i started watching. pain.

the design is largely extremely good. the costumes fuck every single time. cgi looks better than expected so i'm pretty pleased.

that said. the fishmen look like fucking dogshit i cannot take them seriously. i appreciate that they're using practical effects but my god they're so so so bad just for the fishmen.

on the other hand. enamored with the dendenmushi. they're real and they're vile and i want one soooooo bad

impressed that luffy's fx don't look way worse the only one i think looks bad is balloon and that's. tough.

i keep seeing folks in the tag praising the colors and how it's not dark and muddy and i don't think we were watching the same show. the clothes pop and sometimes they'll light a scene but any scene in the dark even a little bit is so washed out and bad looking it's got that netflix stank all over it like most of the circus tent and garp's ship and the final syrup village fight are dark jumbles

also why did we need two goddamn episodes for syrup village. that seems excessive. i feel like they could have cut things differently and ended up with more time for like. actual adaptation stuff.

zoro crying on the dock was so perfect no notes iconic moment

i did tear up when sanji first appeared so. there is that.

also when zoro one handed lifts that big safe. okay king!

zoro is too smart also in ways that he shouldn't be it's bothering me so much. like when he translates usopp's big wordy bullshit he does not know what those words meannnnn

that said. which way is port. it's to the left. ah okay. stands there and does nothing because he doesn't know which way left is either. also gets lost on his way to a house that's ten feet away and visible. more of this we need more of this so bad.

easter eggs so good so fun. cavendish wanted poster. island of weird animals in the end credits. certainly more i didn't catch. mwah we love it.

dialogue sucks shit also the worst element of the show is by far the writing where like the plot is fine the way they rearranged things doesn't bother me if i wanted the exact story in order i'd read it again but the actual lines they write are mostly so stupid bad and generic. every so often they hit on a good one but it's generally lifted straight from the manga.

they didn't even get gold roger's speech right. he didn't say he left it all in one piece. that's the fucking. it's the whole thing of it innit.

oh i need to mention cabaji specifically weird they gave him so much focus and backstory but he looked PERFECT i was hollering

okay one more thing. zoro being in the stocks for 0.5 seconds to keep his job that he abandons immediately anyway instead of being there for weeks in exchange for the safety of a little girl sucks. it takes away so much of his character and feels like such a critical misstep to me but i'm also the zoro guy so idk.

anyway. overall very excited to finish the season and hoping we get more. it's surpassed my (admittedly low) expectations despite my issues with it and it's worth sticking with for sure.

Finally, I get to do what I planned to do long ago. My self-made carrier background for drake. I figured that it took Koby only 2 years to captain, so I think I should make up some backstory as to why Sengokus protege currently is only captain, even if he is longer in the marines. 

We are in the world of one piece, fracture don’t need weeks and months to heal, there are other laws of nature. And in Wano we got introduced to the very fast healing potion of the Minks. Well, let’s just act as if there is something in between.

Sunfishes are apparently dumb. Giant but dumb.

The next evening Elizabeth was still at the med bay. But at least on board of the ship and not in the local hospital.

The headboard of her bed was in a sitting position, and she stared at the opposed wall. The doctor confirmed Amber‘s assumption, she truly had two broken ribs. He pointed out that she was not allowed to train the next time or worse - get in a real fight. Even if she felt better and was able to get through her day without pain.  How was that supposed to work out? Pirates and other criminals wouldn’t respect that. And the imagination of sitting here idly and do nothing while her comrades risked their lives was unbearable. 

A knock shook her from her thoughts.

„Captain Drake“ surprised she saluted and tried to straighten up, when she saw her superior on the threshold. 

„That’s not necessary“ he dismissed while stepping closer.

„Are those for me?“ Elizabeth’s gaze dropped to the bouquet of blue flowers in his hands.

„I heard that is supposed to help with recovery“ he put them on. The bedside table

„Do we have vases on board?“

„No“

„Will the cool lynch me if I take a common glass?“

He seemed to consider it. „He could try it“

„Do you think he will forgive me, if I volunteer for kitchen duty?“

„For now, you're not reporting to any kind of duty“

„Oh, so the doctor talked to you? Is there no professional discretion anymore?“ she crossed her arms and pouted. She had hoped she may be able to declare that she only had to eat for one or two days.

„Of course, but he asked me to ensure you’re taking it slow“

„But how is this supposed to work? If we‘re at sea and pirates-“

„Then we‘ll have to manage without you“

„But due to the medication I‘m much better! In one or two days-“

„No“

„But-“

„No. The medication may speed up the recovery but it will need time.“

„I feel a lot better“ she tried again.

„Don’t waste your breath. You’re in this situation because I agreed to your wish despite my concerns“ he didn’t look like he would budge this time.

„You wanted me to stand my ground, even against you“ it was a last attempt to sway him.

„Stop pouting. If you take it slow you‘ll be up and about again much sooner“

„Are you sure you didn’t talk longer with the doctor?“ she shot him a skeptical look. It was exactly what the doctor had said. And Amber. And Moose. And Wombat. And common sense. 

„If you behave, I will have you released from the sick bay. But no physical endeavors. Have I made myself clear?“ he added with a stern look.

„Yes, Captain, Sir“ she admitted defeated. Actually, that concession was rather accommodating, especially compared to the recommended three days bed rest.

After a few minutes of silence Drake addressed the reason of his visit „How are you really ?“.

„Better, I can breathe without pain, it only hurts if I move. But I am very exhausted. But apparently that is a side effect of the accelerated healing“ she confessed honestly. It was unnecessary to sugarcoat anything now, and he already allowed her to return to her cabin tomorrow. Not that she minded sleeping late and having breakfast in bed - but it made a difference if she had a chance to relax of free will or if she was forced to do it.

„Thats good to hear“ his expression had a hint of guilt „I thought you would dodge“

„Yes…“ she avoided his gaze „I didn’t think of your tail“

Again, a pleasant silence stretched between them. but since their dinner, or more the shared passion for Sora, silence was no longer tense or awkward.

„Captain Drake, may I ask you something?“ nervous she rung her hands.

„What?“ he sounded skeptical, but she couldn’t resent him for that, if she announced it like that.

„Is now another time?“

„What?“

„You said, you‘ll tell my why my post was open for so long another time“

„Oh. That“ the corners of his mouth turned downwards a bit.

„And, will you tell my why?“

She looked at him expectant.

„Sooner or later I‘ll have to“ he crossed his arms „To put it short: Since I don’t appreciate the with of another officer on board, I was denied a new one“  

She blinked confused. “What? How?“ she shook her head to order her thoughts „I have questions. What do you mean by don‘t appreciate ? What happened? Then why Am I here anyways?“ and after a short pause she added carefully „Do I have to be worried?“

„I threw your predecessor over Board, a combination of opportunity and haste, and I don’t think so“ he answered her questions curtly.

Elizabeth lifted her hands in protest and let them drop back on the bedding. That may have been an answer but at the same time not. She already got the impression, he didn’t want to talk about it, but since it could affect her as-well she was entitled to know, at least in her opinion. „Captain, Sir, why did you abandon your first officer?“

„You‘re not dropping it, do you?“ when she. Shook her head he continued „A long story. But it got easier to command my ship after he was gone. Even if it got me more work, many statements and a demotion“

„Wait wait wait“ she interrupted „How is this possible? the first officer’s task is to support you; how can it be harder than without one?“

„Well, by handing me wrong intel, not passing my orders correctly or not at all and by challenging every single decision and ruining the crews trust in my and my leadership“

„Why?“ she was absolutely shocked „Why would anyone do something like that? It is hard to believe, that someone purposely sabotages their own superior“

Drake visible struggled with his answer, but when he did, he sounded cold „My father was dishonorable discharged from the Marines“

„Oh. I‘m sorry. I didn’t knew that. But that isn’t your fault“ now she understood, why he didn’t want to talk about it. At least she didn’t have to worry if this could happen again - if he would abandon her as-well. But she regretted to rub salt in the wound by asking so much. Then she turned her head sideways, it almost got lost in the shuffle „You said something about a demotion?“

„I was Commodore before“ he confirmed.

„Huh. That explains a lot“

She was honestly impressed.

„What do you mean?“ he frowned.

Elizabeth shrugged „I was wondering why Rhino emphasized your rank the way he did. Usually that tone is reserved for subordinate who don’t know their place“ it was the most fitting description she could muster, and it was the first thing that came to her mind back then. The she buried her face in her hands „And I am such a sunfish, for sure it is not better if I continuously call you Captain.“

„I didn’t see much resemblance to a sunfish. And it is my current rank“ he sounded almost amused but returned to his serious attitude“ I just hope my penalty won't affect your career“

„Maybe you sat it out by now, afterglow, I am here“ she wanted to sound reassuring, even if she could grasp how his emotion could affect her. After all, she didn’t know, he was passed over for promotions the last two years despite his achievements.

„That was more of a ploy. I was closely, heard that there is someone who was about to get transferred to a fitting position after a promotion and contacted Albatross, there they didn’t knew about my situation and since I wasn’t the one who sent the request….“

Hi it’s Coranon! Ok so OPLA. It has it’s good moments for sure. It’s kinda campy but in a good way. There’s a handful of scenes I do still really like. I think the actors really put their all into it and I applaud them. I found the sets beautiful, like the ships and especially the Baratie. As for the story, some stuff was pretty good but I have a few(or a lot of) gripes with the way they structured some things. (1/8)

Yeahhh, I've only seen up to episode 4 so I can't talk about a lot of what you mention, so I'll focus on what I do think. I kind of just found the Syrup Village arc to be a slog to get through. Episode 3 had me wishing I was just watching the anime and episode 4 had me feeling more of the same. Tbh I'm not excited to watch the rest of the season and I'm not excited to see the rest of the series. I don't feel particularly hopeful for how they plan on covering the rest of the series since they have to pare down hours and hours of story to fit a tight 8 hour season.

Why did they have to do Usopp like that? I love Zoro (well, I love the Zoro character in the anime and manga) but seeing his backstory in the middle of what's ostensibly supposed to be Usopp's story just pissed me off. Especially since I don't find the backstories emotionally compelling since we don't get to linger on them. I also don't feel like Usopp did a lot in the final fight and that's just disappointing.

I'm not crazy about the Marine B plot either. It's not interesting or compelling. I don't take Koby seriously as a character and I don't want to spend extra time with him when I don't feel like it's adding much to the story. Like, when I see him I just think, we could be spending time with the Straw Hats. Garp is too tame. I think maybe they're afraid to portray his abuse.

And uh if you think Arlong Park is underwhelming, I'm probably going to as well. Which is a shame because Arlong Park is when I became a true believer whilst watching the anime.

And now I'm going to get really fucking honest and might hurt feelings, so I'll hide it under a read more.

I'm just... Not having fun anymore. I thought the first two episodes were charming for the clear love and effort that was put into this series, but that can't carry a whole show imo.

At this point, I don't care about any of the Straw Hats except for Usopp, and that hurts because I love the Straw Hats. They look like their characters, but I'm not enjoying the actors' portrayal of these characters (except for Usopp). I don't care about what they're doing or how they're feeling because I don't feel like I have a reason to be invested. Truthfully I don't think they're all that great of actors.

People are so excited for season 2 and the characters that are introduced and the only character I'm potentially excited for is Kureha because Jamie Lee Curtis is campaigning for the part. And you might think surely I must be excited for Robin, but I'm not because I honestly don't think this series is going to handle her well since they have to cut the runtime of the characters' backstory except for Luffy.

I want to be openminded about this, and I think I have been. But if I'm not having fun, I'm not having fun, and there's not much you can do about that.

I'm going to (slowly) finish this season because, despite my doubts, I want to give the show a chance to do something that impresses me and makes me a believer. If you're interested I'll share my thoughts as it goes on if I have anything to say.

Alright, let me crack my knuckles and see what I can contribute to an *actual* list of Weirdest One Piece Ships.

First up, what is in my opinion the weird one piece ship: DOFUWANI (Doflamingo x Crocodile) I love their dynamic, not just divorced energy but restraining order type energy. 10/10 would put them in a temperature controlled terrarium, but there has to be a pane of glass between them or they’ll kill each other. Literally who decided to ship these two together, I would like to shake your hand and then donate your brain to science.

Next up, I came across this one time and fell down a rabbit hole of content I didn’t think existed: ACELAW (Ace x Law) When I first heard about them, I had to think for a long hard moment about whether they had ever interacted. Correct me if I’m wrong but my conclusion is I don’t think they’ve ever met in canon. “So, what gives?” you may ask. I don’t have an answer to that, but the fanart is cute and they do have quite the potential dynamic.

I don’t know the ship name for this one but I’ve seen some people ship Sogeking x Kaya. Maybe I’ll call them SOGEKAYA. No hate to the people who ship it, it just seems weird to me and I don’t really get it. I know Usokaya (Usopp x Kaya) is pretty huge and I think that one is sweet, but why ship Kaya with the guy who was just a temporary sniper for the strawhats? Whom she also has never met? Unless we just think that Kaya has a thing for any sniper, I think this one belongs on the weird ships list.

And out of left field here comes KILLGUIN (Killer x Penguin) which, to me, is like the epitome of “their eyes met from across the room” type stuff except they’re on different boats entirely. A real ‘where did it come from where did it go’. I’ve seen enough stuff for it to add it to the list, but not enough to really explain it.

Some people might argue with me on this one but I’m putting ZOROMAPS (Zoro x Google Maps) on the list. There’s enough of a base for me to have heard about this ship, but personally I think they would have no chemistry at all. Zoro would never listen, and Google Maps is a robot. Imo this ship is a lost cause.

Maybe not quite as controversial—or maybe it is—CROSSCULE (Buggy x Mihawk x Crocodile). Has the vibes of putting three middle aged men in a jar and shaking them. Plus this ship gets messy if you add Shanks and Doflamingo to the dynamic/jar. A real mixed bag. A fun pack. Go crazy.

My next contribution is LAWSAN (Law x Sanji). I guess everyone wants a piece of sexy closeted fanon Sanji, and that includes Law. And even though I did not see this one coming until the fanart showed up in front of my face, I honestly can’t blame them. Yeah, sure, take two of the absolute hottest characters in the series and make them kiss. You have free will and a phone, you should do whatever you want forever.

An interesting one that I have only encountered recently is KOBYNIKA (Koby x Nika) in which people are shipping Koby not just with Luffy but specifically with Sun God Nika. It looks sort of like a warlock/patron relationship from what I can tell. Honestly it’s kinda cute, once you get over its general existence.

So, I watched the RED Movie yesterday. I have very mixed feelings. I'll explain everything under cut since I want to talk about scenes & plot & involved characters.

So far, a short non-spoiler review:

-> if you're not 100% sure you DON'T want to see the movie, don't hesitate and get yourself a ticket, this is one of those made to be enjoyed in cinema, the experience won't be the same at home

-> if you want to see this only to see your blorbo in action...you most likely will be disappointed, unless your blorbo is Koby, Barto or Usopp

-> if Uta's design & everything told about her in promo materials didn't convince you to like her...you most likely will be disappointed too

-> ...actually, you will have much more fun, if you stop treating it as a movie and start to think about it as high budget music video with Ado's pirate-sona. a big animated fanfic with a quirky OC

-> if you can wait, do yourself a favor and watch it AFTER you read this week's chapter, you will thank me 🤭

And now to the juicy meat.

I went to cinema knowing well this is NOT a movie for me. I'm a manga-only fan, I know anime only in bits and RED is my first OP movie ever. The info revealed in campaign didn't make me enthusiastic, especially given how much they push Uta on the pedestal. Frankly, if not for sis who really wanted to see it, I'd not move my ass to cinema.

But I did. And much to my surprise, I did enjoy it lol Wouldn't call it a good movie (maybe it is for OP standards, no idea), but wouldn't call it a waste of time either. Just a fun thing to watch together with a bunch of nerds, so you can make weird noises when your faves show up.

Uta for me was the weakest point of the movie. Not because I find her a bad-written character (I actually like what they made with her but that's later), but because she has like, 0 chemistry with characters on screen. Her relationship with Shanks and Luffy are limited to very short flashbacks and a few scenes with Shanks at the very end. Luffy and Uta interact with each other but I just...didn't get a feeling they're old friends reuniting after years. I mean, compare it to how Luffy reacted to Ace in Alabasta. Everytime Luffy and Uta met, it felt like a staged scene, and given that a majority of movie is played in alter-reality, controlled by Uta's mind, it gives one whole additional layer of that weird, fake feeling.

Following with the weak points: there's a whole lot of characters who do NOTHING. If we cut all the fight scenes but the finale, a good part of the cast has nothing to do. They just...are. Because they're Strawhats/popular characters. But even with those fight scenes... Zoro, one of the most important characters in the serie, got more or less the same screen time as a fucking chibified fursona of a ship. Even Shanks and Luffy, 2 of 3 main pillars of the movie, don't do that much. Really.

Honestly, fight scenes but the last one disappointed me. I'm a simple One Piece simp: I want to see my blorbos flexing muscles in crazy fights. I know this is not the essence of plot, but it's the flavor. One Piece wouldn't be One Piece if it wasn't boiled in broth made of bloody, sweaty tits, goddammit. In RED majority of fight scenes are edited like AMVs. With insane graphic quality, but with the same chaos and level of cuts and edits. Plus Uta being Uta through majority of screen time. Which is...UGH. The way she fights is really interesting! Whenever she does it, the jaw just drops! I wanna see her fighting with that power! Not look at heavily edited idol performance!

Luckily, at some point movie finally chills down and lets the plot breathe. And once it stops being an AMV on speed, it becomes quite interesting. Especially with the way it flashes out those few characters who got something to do. BIG kudos for choosing less obvious ones for pushing the plot motor: Bartolomeo, Koby, Blueno, Usopp (feat. his daddy issues). Koby was the absolute MVP. Holy fuck. I hope this is just a foretaste of what we're going to see in manga.

Fan theories connoisseurs will be over the moon with the number of symbols and wink winks. Not gonna lie, I focused on lyrics on purpose, to avoid sensory overload from those shaking AMVs and was surpirsed how much info is hidden in them. Like one, big teaser for the upcoming events.

I wonder how many connections will be revealed later. The robots from library? Hell, guess what just happened in chapter 1065 👀 They weren't lying that events aren't canon - but lore definitely is.

The animation & music combo is INSANE. Especially when they let Ado sing instead of pushing her to perform as a candy idol girl (the opening song made my skin crawl jesus christ that was horrible). Gods, the more crazy Uta gets, the better songs get and when the music goes low ohhhhh yes, that's the good shit.

NO FANSERVICE. IN ONE PIECE MOVIE? MORE LIKELY THAN YOU THOUGHT! Except for one very toned panties joke and one not-moving panel from the credits there's literally no fanservice. Null. Zero. Nada. And they let female characters fight to their fullest! Nami, Robin and Brulee do in comparison as much as other background characters.

The final is. IS. I swear, it's one of the best directed fights I've seen in One Piece EVER and hello, forget about the non-anime thig, I watched the famous Katakuri vs Snakeman and the Rooftop. The combo of powerful music, smooth animation, characters cooperating in perfectly-balanced yet unexpected teams, the multi layered attack lead by Usopp and Yasopp, Snakeman-Nika fusion & Shanks finish, fuck, I swear, I was shaking.

I hope this is how final fight in OP will look like. A whole team of our faves from various fractions against Im maybe? 👀

Loved how balanced the humor was. Characteristic for One Piece yet, tamed. Nothing too perverted, nothing too gross, everything chaotic as fuck. Love you, Bepo.

But my favorite part is probably the way they handled the conflict and the case of who's a villain. Don't wanna say too much cause imho this is something everyone should interpret according to their own judgement, but liked how they placed the core in the moral dilemma between bringing relief and utopia for the cost of freedom and remaining free but having to face the reality (oh, someone was inspired by The Matrix). Should I run into lie to comfort myself? Is it a wise idea to try and shield someone from consequences of their actions, even if they were not fully conscious? Does one have a right to decide what's good for others?

If not for the BULLSHIT finish, I'd say the second part saved the movie in my eyes. Sadly, it added to a bad aftertaste. Well, at least I have the OST. And soon-to-come shirtless snake gifs.

Overall, not a tragedy, thing more enjoyable than irritating even if you are easily distracted by things you don't like (like me lol), worth spending money and time even if for just watching an AMV on big screen.

And the obligatory traditional number scale: 4/10 as a stand alone movie, 6/10 as a meat for OP fan, 10/10 of Law's hairy leggies my beloved.

Law

Law is confused as to how this could happen (even though he is a doctor). He is always very thorough when it comes to protection and he knows that there is always a possibility for the condom to rip or the pill not working or both but he kind of refuses to accept it. He has neither the nerves nor the means to support his partner and a baby.

He doesn’t seem like the type of person who would want to become a parent – at least not at the moment. He wants to follow his dreams first before he plans a family and a family is quite frankly not his top priority.

He won’t be mad at them but he won’t be thrilled either. He won’t straight out tell them to get an abortion but he will make it clear that the kid will be mainly their responsibility if they choose to keep it. He sounds like an asshole but his life comes before the life of an unborn baby.

If his partner insists on keeping the baby he will tell them that he will try and support them but he 1. Won’t be there for the most time and 2. He will not, under any circumstances, have a baby on board his submarine. So, unless his partner is willing to wait for him and live like 90 % without him this relationship, as much as he loves his partner, will be more or less over.

He will, however, be there for the delivery, doing it himself and he might fall in love with his kid when he holds them, looking into their bright little eyes and tiny, tiny feet. But the chances are still slim, don’t bet on it!

Kid

The moment his partner tells him that they’re pregnant he makes sure to get the f*ck out of there and never come back. He has no interest in becoming a parent, not even in the future. He will tell his partner that they better get rid of the little pest cause otherwise he’ll be gone. He is even harsher than Law, telling them straight out that they’re gonna be completely on their own with the child.

He doesn’t want to leave his partner alone, feeling some sense of loyalty towards them but he is more determined to become the pirate king and he won’t let a child get in the ways of his goal.

Being a pirate is dangerous and (even though he will never admit it) he doesn’t know if he will live to see his partner and potential child again. He’s already lost one arm, who says he will come out of the next fight this lightly?

He loves his partner but like Law he does not want to have a baby on board his ship! He probably won’t even be there for the delivery If his partner chooses to keep the baby, already chasing his dream of becoming the king of pirates again.

If his partner chooses to terminate the baby their relationship won’t be the same again; especially if he kind of pressured his partner to get rid of it. He will become more distant, not wanting to sleep with them that often due to the fear of another accident (cause the first time his partner got pregnant most definitely was an accident).

If they got an abortion on their own free will he will be more open with them but still a little hesitant when it comes to sex, being careful that it won’t happen again (first time actively thinking about protection cause, let’s be honest, his partner will be the responsible one in the relationship).

Marco

Depending at which point he is at his life when his partner tells him that they’re pregnant he will be either happy or concerned. If Whitebeard is still alive he will be concerned since he really does want to be with his partner and his kid but he will not leave the crew. After all, the Whitebeard pirates are his family and he does not want to leave his family behind.

But at the same time his partner and future kid are his family as well and he does not want to leave them behind either. His partner will have to tell him (if they want to keep it) that it’s okay if Marco chooses to continue his journey with Whitebeard and that they will wait for him until he comes back, no matter how long it takes. Marco will feel guilty after all but I can see him feeling a little bit more miserable if he stays with you.

If, however, we are talking about post Whitebeard he is more than happy. Him and his partner will probably already be married by then and he will be so excited and take personally care of his s/o and their needs, making sure that they have everything they need and keep a close eye on the pregnancy.

He is so ready to become a father and he will be such a great one as well. Like Law, he will help deliver the baby and he instantly falls in love with his child. He will be a proud and an amazing dad.

Coby will panic. He thinks he is too young to become a father since he’s just a little baby himself lol. But after his partner has calmed him down (they’re probably the more level headed person in the relationship) he will feel happy. Not overly happy but the feeling builds up over time.

The more time passes the more he gets used to the thought of becoming a father. It also helps that he is a marine and that he and his family will be taken care of safety- and financial-wise. Since Coby is such a nice bean I can imagine him being fairly liked by his fellow marines. That’s why he and his partner will be overloaded with presents and most likely won’t have to buy anything themselves.

He doesn’t even think that they might want to get an abortion and if they do and tell him he will be devastated. He was so thrilled on becoming a father (after a while) so he doesn’t want his partner to get an abortion (might be a little selfish). He just can’t understand why they wouldn’t want to become a parent as well.

If they get an abortion (after he has already been getting excited about the pregnancy) their relationship will change and he might want to break up with them. There will just be something between them from then on and he simply can’t live with it in the long run.

“I don’t see why this concerns me, Y/n.” honestly, what did they expect? He does not want to become a father. At all. He has no use for a child, especially a baby. They’re dirty, babble nonsense and only cost money. It’s a miracle he’s even in a relationship at all so if they want it to stay this way they better get an abortion.

Rob Lucci will not cut back on anything just because his partner is pregnant. He will insist on sex, especially rough sex with lots of spanking and scratching and biting and all of that. If his partner is not in the mood once, it’s okay. If it happens more often due to the pregnancy he will bash on them and then leave.

Don’t expect him to take care of them during their pregnancy either. He gave them the option to get an abortion so don’t come crying to him when this pregnancy gets uncomfortable. But this is all assuming he stays with his partner. The more likely outcome will be him leaving them behind and looking for someone else.

He is just not cut out to be a father. He knows it, they know it. And I don’t even think they would want him to be the father of their child. Let’s just put it like this: he won’t be the most caring father, if you know what I mean….

You’d joined the marines to help people and protect them from pirates, bandits and whoever threatens their life and livelihood. It’d been your dream since you were a child and your town had been saved by marines from pirates that had come to raid your home. And now you were here, on a ship to learn, although you hadn’t foreseen the chores that came with it. Cleaning, laundry and serving the officers were not something that you’d been told, when you enlisted. It was a mild annoyance, though you didn’t complain and did as you were told.

Entering the cabin of the captain, you took a look around. It was the first time you were in here and only because you had been told to gather his laundry and change his sheets. You let your eyes wander, as you tried to calm you heart down. Coby was an amazing captain, strong, kind, helpful and good looking too. You weren’t sure if he actually needed the glasses, but you thought he looked cool with them on his bandana. One day you hoped to be as strong and as amazing as him.

Gathering your thoughts on your task ahead, you went to the basket, where he was supposed to place the dirty laundry. You’d already learned that not all officers and high ranked marines were tidy, some even sloppy in your opinion. However, you were mildly surprised – and impressed – to see that Coby were using the basket. Well, you should have known, after seeing how neat his cabin was. And spacious. You could really need the privacy once in a while. The downside to be nothing but a seaman recruit was that you didn’t have your own space or really any privacy.

“Spacing out on the job?” A voice spoke with a chuckle, making you spin around to see Coby in the door. He had an amused smile on his lips and you felt yourself fluster lightly. Quickly you looked down and got to work, taking out his laundry from his basket to yours.

“I’m sorry, I won’t be long.” You quickly said, embarrassed he’d caught you in spacing out. Luckily he wasn’t your direct superior; he was actually just getting a ride back to headquarters after a mission, so you felt safe that he wouldn’t punish you for the slip. He didn’t have the reputation to be a very strict captain, but a well-respected one, who could trust him and knew when he was serious and when not.

“I don’t mind. Your captain sure make you work hard, don’t he?” Coby mused, as he sat down on his chair, while you placed the basket down, ready to change his sheet. You’d somehow already placed the fresh beddings on the bed.

You gave a shrug at his words. It was how it was. Life on the sea and in the marines weren’t supposed to be easy and it built character. If you could stand this, then you could live out your dream and at least become a captain one day. All you had to do, was to learn to navigate through this. And ignore your crush. Who was right there. Sitting on a chair, watching every single move you made. The thought alone made you fluster even more.

Suddenly you felt him right behind you, his hand on your shoulder. Calmly you turned around, wondering what he wanted from you and why he didn’t just speak up from where he’d been sitting. Seeing him this close to you, made you fluster even more and you tried so hard to fight off the blush that adored your cheeks.

“I was wondering if you want to ... uhm … hang out later?”

You saw the pink that dusted his cheeks, which matched with his hair and you liked it. It looked good on him. Then his words registered in your mind and you felt how your own cheeks burned.

“I mean, only if you like to. No pressure.” Coby quickly added, pulling his hand from your shoulder and stepped back.

“I would love to.” You said quickly, before he could say more and take his words back. “It sounds great. Honestly.” You smiled, feeling all giddy. You might get into trouble for taking your time in his cabin, but it would be worth it. How often did your crush actually ask you to hang out with them?

One piece 30 day challenge : Day 7 Marines or Pirates ? Who are the bad guys ?

Ahem, this wasn’t the question hihi It depends from where you’re looking at this question. But...I would say MARINES. 

WARNING : A bit controversial.

No I am not influenced by my love for Koby

I swear I have my reasons. >o< Well, let’s look at my point of view in more details. 

You could either base your opinion on the Marines and Pirates that are shown in One Piece universe or you could try to take more distance and try to “imagine” the story being written from a neutral focalisation or another character’s point of view. 

✖ The importance of POV : One piece follows the Straw hats, who are “good” pirates, so it’s natural to feel more empathy towards the pirates. The reader/watcher always relates and feels compassion towards the protagonists, even if they are “criminals”. Some other Pirates are shown in a badass way (like kid Pirates, Red hair pirates, etc) so it’s really hard to put things into perspective, because we don’t get to see the “bad” things that they do. (The killing civilians parts, etc...) So, we have a very biased point of view on pirates.

✖ What is a pirate ?  

noun. /ˈpaɪrət/ /ˈpaɪrət/ ​ (especially in the past) a person on a ship who attacks other ships at sea in order to steal from them.

One of the characterization traits of a pirate are to steal, rob etc. A lot of the Pirates in One piece are like that ! (Like, Alvidia let’s say) however, we follow the adventure of “good” (?) pirates. Also, we don’t get a lot of brutality and horrible moments of Pirates being terrible to innocents because it doesn’t serve the plot. 

But I assume that most pirates are like this in One piece. This is the reason why someone like Isshou is in the Marine. This is why Garp is in the Marine. These pirates make people’s lives living hell. 

✖ Let’s take an example : Kid who kills innocent civilians. (Because I love Kid!!)  What we see is good hot Kid, his quirky personnality, his badass character design, etc. So it’s only natural to love this kind of pirates ! We get mostly the good. 

✖ Blackbeard is a good exemple of this. Blackbeard is hated. But really ? Why is he hated ? He is just being a pirate. Pirates kill and steal, that’s the meaning of the world. I think that this also shows how character design plays a big role in our appreciation of the character. Edit: actually, I think a lot of people hate him for being sneaky, killing Ace and betraying WB. So my exemple was a bit hasty, lol.

✖ Are strawhats good ? : To get to his goal, Luffy is not letting anyone stop him. His motive is freedom and isn’t “heroic” and he does state it ! I think that Luffy is just a good pirate, someone that has a good heart but that he doesn’t have a strong sense of morality. His motive is selfish and personal. Same for let’s say, Nami, who is a perfect example as she used to steal for a living. (Of course, she had her reasons, this is not the topic, I am not antagonizing any character here ! I LOVE MY STRAWHATS please don’t hate me, okay ?) 

✖ What is good and evil ? What is “Justice” ? This is one of the main themes of One Piece. This is the reason behind the justice crisis of characters like : Smoker, Tashigi, Garp, Koby. This is what One piece teaches us. 

Justice is subjective. You can’t fight in the name of justice. There will be always people that are victim to injustice. Law is not personnalized to every singular case (and that sucks). This is why the marine couldn’t accept to recognize they were helped by the strawhats. This is why Smoker spared Luffy. He is still a criminal, but he did something good. 

✖ One piece shows us different ways to see justice ; from the dogmatic way that Rob Lucci represents, from the rigid application of justice that Akainu embodies, the “justice” of Celestial dragons that is linked to aristocracy, the justice of the oppressed represented by the revolutionaries...Etc... 

✖ A case example : Doffy being a visionnaire like always and speaking gold : (giving us his vision of justice) 

“Pirates are evil? The Marines are righteous? These terms have always changed throughout the course of history! Kids who have never seen peace and kids who have never seen war have different values! Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right! This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!”

✖ Oda’s take : I remember that part (I forgot) when Luffy said that it’s up to people to decide wether they are good or bad. And this is for me the ZIST of One piece. Oda doesn’t give answers, but he pushes the reader to think for themselves. He doesn’t say this is bad and this is good. It’s up to us to “chose” a camp and honestly, I don’t think it’s about chosing...It’s more about accepting that life isn’t white or black but a lot of gray zones. Good and Evil are social constructs. Humans write in law what is good and bad but it’s such a biiig field. This is the problem with vague concepts. 

✖ WHY WOULD I STILL CHOOSE MARINES ?  I know. The problem with Marines are that they work under a corrupt government. They are “people who spill water on hands” as we like to say in my beautiful dialect which means people that have little or no say in higher decisions. 

✖ HOWEVER I generally (and it’s personal) prefer something more...”framed” ? I think that If I was in One Piece Universe I’d be a marine like Koby, or Isshou. I look up to Isshou a lot. I would be working for the marine and using my position to try to limit inhumanity and limit “absolute justice”. 

The more I think about it, the more I think marines aren’t better. When I think about Buster Call, genocide of Ohara, not doing sh*t against slavery...Ugh...Well. I came up to say I preferred Marines, but I think I would JOIN marines if I had the choice, but that I prefer neither. (Of course in the P.O.V of the Show, I have more empathy for Pirates, and therefore, I love my Kid pirates !)
