I’m Home Now - Elucien
Word count: 770
Summary: Elain and friends have a day out to the mal. Of course, this can’t just be a normal day out. No, instead, this is the day that everyone surprises Elain with a special someone.
Beta Readers: @foxboylucien
Warnings: none
Notes: this is my first time writing these two in a while, so please be gentle :3. I hope you enjoyed it nonetheless.
Tag List: @foxboylucien @rarephloxes @starcrossed-wildfire @wintersouldier57 @savvyflowers @coffeeseed
“Elain, I’m serious, wear the yellow dress,” Feyre insists. She pushes the dress to her sister, and then pushes her to the bathroom. “Please, just do it.”
“No, I don’t--” Elain starts, but she is then pushed into the bathroom. The door closes behind her. Why did Feyre insist on her wearing this dress? She didn’t want to.
Seeing no other option, Elain wiggles out of her current dress. She steps into the yellow one, hugging herself as she looks in the mirror. Sighing, she can’t help the wave of melancholy. This was the dress she wore on the day Lucien had left for his deployment. His favorite dress on her.
Stepping out of the bathroom, she looks to Feyre with a small glare. She says, “I have no idea why you wanted me to wear this. You know how it makes me feel.”
“But, that’s exactly why you should wear it. To get you over this misery business, so you can get your favorite dress back.” She hugs Elain, a hidden smirk on her face. “You know he’s gonna come back next month, Elain.”
“Yes, I know,” Elain answers slowly. Truth be told, this would be the longest month she has ever lived.
“Now, it’s time to go. Nesta will be eating our asses if we’re late.”
---
The two find themselves in the middle of a busy mall 30 minutes later. Grouped up with Nesta, Cassian, and Rhysand now, Elain seems more at ease than before, forgetting all her melancholic feelings from earlier. Right now, she only cares about getting her lunch of pizza and a Pepsi.
“Have we stopped everywhere everyone wanted to go?” Feyre asks as she passes a napkin to Rhysand. His face is smeared with his dipping sauce.
“Can we go to the flower shop before we leave?” Elain inquires. She takes a sip of her drink to wash down the last of her pizza. “I could use more flowers at home.”
“Of course, Elain,” Cassian answers her, a cool smile growing on his face. “I wanted to get Nesta some sunflowers anyway.”
“I’m literally right here, Cass,” Nesta counters as she glares at him. “Way to ruin your surprise.”
“It’s not really a surprise if I intentionally said it, love.”
Elain giggles at the exchange. They are so cute together. But, it only causes her to miss Lucien again. She folds her hands in her lap, looking down as her emotions wash over her. All she wants in this moment to him to hug her. Too many months have gone by without his embrace.
“Hey, chin up,” Cassian blurts to Elain. Seeing her so sad, when he knows of the surprise they all have for her, hurt. Her happy-go-lucky personality slowly faded when Lucien had left. But, hopefully, it would be back soon. “No need for sorrow, sister. It’s time to look at flowers.”
---
Honestly, watching them enter the flower shop from afar was so hard. Lucien’s excitement to be home is overflowing from his body. He keeps pacing between a fake plant and a closed store’s entrance.
Cauldron, he just wanted to see Elain. Why did he plan this surprise?
When he is about to give in and march into the store, Lucien sees his signal. Ferye giving a thumbs up from the store entrance.
In an almost sprint, Lucien rushes into the store, avoiding other people to get to Elain. He pulls to a stop right behind her. With a feather-light touch, Lucien taps on her shoulder, drawing her attention to him.
“I’m sorry I don--” She drops her sentence in shock at the person behind her. Tears fall from her eyes almost immediately, and her hands clasp themselves over her mouth. “Lucien?”
“Hey there, honey,” he replies, bringing her into a hug. He let out a sigh of relief, finally feeling at home, at peace.
“Wait, no, no, you can’t--you aren’t sup--” Her cries muffle her voice. “You aren’t supposed to be here.”
He simply smiles down at her. She looks so beautiful with the yellow sundress. He felt himself falling in love all over again. Lucien picks her up bridal style, twirling around as he laughs. Elain clings to him, crying and laughing as well.
Setting her back down, Lucien rests his forehead on top of hers, leaving a gentle kiss to her cheek. He wipes her tears away. She brings her hands to his cheeks as she stares in amazement.
“You’re home,” she breaths out. Her wish had come true. Her Lucien, her husband, is back home, in her arms. “Cauldron, you’re home. I love you so much.”
“I love you, too,” he replies, kissing her cheek again. “I love you, too, Elain.”

castaway - myg
Chapter 10
Pairing: Yandere! Idol Yoongi x F! Singer Reader
Warning(s): Mention of suicidal thoughts, a home break in, delusional thoughts.
A/N: Promise, PROMISE to bring back more tmr, but this chap wasn’t planned, and came to me on a whim! + it’s 12 and I need sleep.
- This is complete fiction. I do not believe any of the members would do or act as written.
CASTAWAY MASTERLIST
yn
There’s something in my smile that makes me shiver. Maybe it’s the way I do it so believably to the point that if I convinced myself I was truly happy, I’d thrive. I’d live.
I always knew I was going to be a fuck up, but I never knew that it would pain me - disappoint me in ways that fill me with dread and the desperate crave for death. There was a time in my life where I was happy and it seems so long ago - blurry, as if it never really happened.
Maybe I dreamt it… or imagined it when I used to be on cloud nine.
I don’t even know why I keep writing on this.
Home doesn’t feel like home and being back just feels more suffocating than being in that facility. I came back to a home of mine, somewhere in the lower west - honestly I can’t even remember, but it was broken into by a man who’s been on my tail for a while, believing we’re married and with child.
Stalkers have never really been something I’ve never have come across, but it still scares me.
If only they knew the real me. Would they break when they realize that the woman they romanticize about isn’t truly the golden and sweet girl they believe they have?
Or would they accept me as I am.
For fucks sakes, who am I kidding. They’d toss me aside and find somebody else.
Therapy is bullshit.
It’s… sort of comedic in a way. A person who has problems of their own, listening to other people’s problems. But holy shit, what’d I give to sit on a couch and listen to other peoples’ bullshit.
The nosiness never left, I guess.
But being home is like living in a golden cage. I have everything I could desire: a chef, a gym, a theater, indoor and outdoor pool, the list goes on, but I can’t enjoy it because I’m confined against my will - at least until I can prove that I have myself under control and won’t cause a potential chaos.
Nobody visits me other than Alex. It seems they’re the only one who cares.
My group mates call from time to time, but I understand, they have their own lives and they’ve dealt with me more times than I can count. I can’t ask for more of them. It’s selfish and I hate it.
But it’s lonely and I’m getting tired of crying myself to sleep. I wish to cry in somebody’s arms.
I wished I believed that when I got myself into this: young, wide eyed and innocently naive, that in this life, full of glamour and things only others could dream of, there’s nobody but you, and you alone.
You are utterly and wretchedly deserted.

Can you explain SGFG like you did self titled haha
*straightens back* *pull up sleeves* *cracks fingers* i thought you'd never ask skspakoakaoak
We start out strong with a "you're so hot I'd let you rob me" song, don't know what was going on when they wrote this, but sure, then we move on to "i might be crazy and broken but it's alright tho cuz people around me are kinda hot but just kinda tho" then we move to a fuck capitalism song "we can all get some we can all get paid" still waiting for clearer instructions on that one, then we go to "I'm complicated, slightly depressed but I don't give a fuck" and then we have one of the best songs ever written with the amazing "I'm trapped in my own head and I keep making mistakes but I'm trying so fucking hard please tell me you see that" like excuse me *hiding knife in my back" Michael, who hurt you like that? I just wanna talk.
Then we have catch fire, i don't know what Muke was on when they wrote that but i want some of it "now I'm lost in the swirling sea of your sorry eyes" "cause the ghost of survivals guilt can be so unkind" "the words you speak surrounding me this is broken love in the first degree the air you breathe is haunting me maybe I'll change your mind" excuse me???????!??? Then we get "I'm broken and you're broken let's be broken together" the "no more waiting we can save us from falling" gets me every time, then we have a mandatory song about sex but it's so profound and romantic you can forget it is a mandatory song about sex specially with that cool little interlude in the end, then they spin you around with "i love you so much I'll let you use me cuz if I try hard enough I can pretend this isn't just a big lie", then we have an ultimate "how the hell did we get here song" that has stuff like "heartbreak that i can't escape a sinking ship I'll never save" "all your screaming whispers slip right through my fingers but these memories linger on" all hidden by the pop punk moment (castaway should've been a single and. I'll die on this hill).
Then we have the "i wanna believe you but i can't trust you" featuring "it doesn't have to be this tragedy this endless lost parade a castle of facade of make believe" again who let them get away with writing this stuff???? And we move on to "my parents got a divorce and they definitely should have but I miss feeling safe at home" I'm not gonna quote anything here cuz I would just write the whole song, the whole song is beautifully written and just paints the most heartbreaking picture ever, but then they spin you around and throw fly away in your face with the "i really really really really wanna run away let's go like right now" song.
And then they spin you around punch you the face and kick you while your down with invisible, i am positive that "another day the wall are built to keep me save i can't escape is too late" is the most heartbreaking thing I'll ever hear, and they follow that up with the hope anthem, i swear every time i hear airplanes for 3:38 minutes i feel like i can conquer the world, the bridge alone is everything, then we have a little "nostalgia is a powerful thing" with San Francisco that in the end is another "i was awful and I'm so sorry please take me back" song and I eat that up every time, then we have 5sos masterpiece, if os/co song is not in your top 10 5sos songs, you're listening to them wrong, go do it again and pay attention this time, I'm looking at you Ashton Calum Luke and Michael how dare you say this is not an s tier song"i guess I was running from something i was running back to you" amazing, the whole outerspace outro, "the darkest night never felt so bright with you by my side" "nothing like the rain when you're in outerspace" the repetition of the "love me like you did" that gives you hope followed by the "I'll give you anything" that just takes it away and then we have the waves and everything calms down and then bam a whole choir telling you it's gonna get better, honestly ending the album with this was such a power move, incredible.
But then you get the bonus songs, the "I'm bad you're worse but I'm loving every second of this rollercoaster" and yet another entry to the "I'm the worst and I'm so sorry please just take me back" that makes me want to rip my hair out "an epilogue before you're done a sequel to what we began" the chorus?!??? The bridge??????? The whole song actually.
Amazing experience from beginning to end, will make you experience the whole spectrum of human emotions. 10000000/10 album.

Just Outside Of Town & You’re Making Your Way Down // Calum Hood
The never-ending prompt list returns! This was actually the first request I ever personally received (if you’re still here, anon, sorry this took so long!) and I’ve had it finished for a minute but I kept putting off posting it partly because I was nervous to post a non-Ash piece and partly because I couldn’t stop writing Ash pieces that I wanted to share immediately lmao. Thank you to everyone who hyped me up about this the other day and as always, thank you to @cal-puddies for the advice, the encouragement and the general company in clowning.
Prompt: “Goddammit... All I can think about right now is you licking my cock like it’s that ice cream cone.”
Warnings: There’s a cute setup but it’s basically PWP after that, first attempt at Boyfriend!Cal, oral sex performed on a male in a semi-public setting (is this the shortest warning section I’ve ever had lmao?)
Word Count: 1.6k

————-
“You couldn’t possibly be making more of a mess,” you giggle as ice cream runs down your boyfriend’s chin.
You and Calum were having a low-key date night; you went for a nice drive, enjoyed a casual dinner and took in a late movie. As you were leaving the theater, he noticed that the ice cream place you both like was still open and suggested you grab some dessert. But as you watch him struggle with his serving on the walk back to the car, you wonder if he was beginning to regret this decision.
He crinkles his nose and tries to dodge your hand that’s threatening to dab his face with a napkin. “Baby, if you hadn’t taken so long to decide what flavor you wanted, mine wouldn’t have started melting before you even got yours," he points out.
Rather than debate his relatively fair point, you redirect the blame. “You just take too damn long to eat, bub,” you laugh as he continues to lose his battle against the melting frozen treat.
“Never heard you make that complaint before,” he cracks. He starts to shoot you a self-satisfied yet somehow still adorable grin but it quickly turns to a frown as a large glob of ice cream slides off the top of his cone and onto the ground. “Shit,” he mutters under his breath.
You stop walking to shake your head and pout sympathetically at him. “This is sad, babe, let me help,” you offer. Reaching for his cone, you gesture for him to take yours; you trade desserts and you eyeball his double-scoop waffle cone for a second before you dive in.
You tilt your head to the side and stick your flattened tongue out, rolling the cone along the width of it, smoothing out where the two scoops were beginning to separate. With the tip of your tongue, you lick up and down the sides of it, tidying up where the multiple drips were coming from. And finally you wrap your lips around the top of the cone and move it in and out of your mouth a few times, trying to mold the swirled top into a shape that was less likely to topple as it continued to melt.
Satisfied with your handiwork, you triumphantly hoist the cone towards Cal’s face, which is now displaying a cartoonishly stunned appearance. You take in his expression and give him a quizzical one in return.
“What? Are you mad because I ate so much?” You ask, words coming out a little funny due to your tongue getting cold from your assist. “I had to, Cal, it was honestly a disaster zone but you can have some of mine if you want to make it even,” you offer.
He shakes his head, almost as if to literally break himself free of his daze and switches cones with you once more. “It’s fine, I was just… impressed at your… artistry,” he explains with a laugh. “Thanks for lookin’ out for me, love.” He slinks an arm around your waist and you resume walking.
The rest of the stroll is spent in comfortable silence as you devour your treats; by the time you’re back sitting in the car, you’re already down to the cone on yours while Cal is starting to have issues again.
He catches you watching his predicament unfold and tries to pout but chuckles instead, “You know I like to savor my food, don’t make fun! I should’ve listened to you, though, two scoops was too much.”
“You definitely should’ve listened to me, Mr. Savory, but I wasn’t gonna make fun,” you laugh, polishing off your cone. “I was just gonna ask if you needed more help.”
“Ohhh, that’s the last thing I need,” Cal deadpans.
You give him a look of amused confusion, assuming he’s just being stubborn about needing your assistance.
“It was… that was a lot, baby,” he shakes his head, eyes widening at the memory.
You roll your eyes at his classic Calum obliqueness. “Like… A lot of ice cream? What am I not getting?”
“Goddammit…” He lets out a choked laugh that you recognize as both partly shy and wicked. “All I can think about right now is you licking my cock like it’s that ice cream cone.”
You were expecting another non-answer, so you let out a stunned cackle. “You’re not serious? You got turned on watching me save your ice cream?” You playfully shove his hand off your thigh. “You horny bastard,” you taunt.
“Baby,” he says, voice deep, grinning knowingly. “You didn’t see yourself, it was downright pornographic.”
“Trying to flatter yourself into a little date night action, I see how it is,” you tease, scooting closer to pull him into a kiss.
He deepens it immediately and you make a pleased murmur against his lips when you discover you can faintly taste the ice cream on his tongue. Your hands begin to wander and you let out another murmur when you feel his semi-hard cock. “Wow, you weren’t kidding, were you, babe?” He simply groans in response as you rub him over his pants.
“A truly hilarious joke, me having to drive us home in this state,” Cal sheepishly laments.
“Don’t have to,” you shrug and gesture towards the empty parking lot you’re sitting in. He searches your face to gauge how serious you are and you pull him back in for a kiss that leaves your intentions unmistakable.
Calum eagerly scoots his seat back to give you more room as you pull him out of his jeans and lean out of your seat. He cracks up at the realization that he’s still holding his failed ice cream cone. “Baby, we’re gonna have two messes to deal with if we don’t do something here,” he jokes.
You snort and reach into the backseat, retrieving a discarded coffee cup. You smile fondly at him, charmed at the absurd sight of the man you love sitting in his car, hard cock proudly jutting out of his pants, helplessly holding a melted dessert.
You reach for the cone, shaking your head. “Honestly, what would you do without me, Hood?”
You take a long, exaggerated lick across the width of the treat just because and drop it into the cup, setting it aside. He caresses your face and simply grins, watching you reposition yourself across the car’s cabin.
Situated above his lap, you don’t waste any time and begin employing your ice cream technique. You flatten your tongue and run it along his shaft a few times, using the tip of your tongue to trace along his veins and ridges. It’s when you slowly start to take him into your mouth that you hear an unusual hiss above you; you glance up at him inquisitively.
“Mouth’s cold,” he explains, voice straining. “Feels good though.”
You smirk at him, taking that reaction as your cue to sink down on him as much as you can. He curses under his breath and runs his fingers through your hair as you move up and down his length, one hand working towards the base of his cock, the other lightly playing with his balls. You work up a steady pace, hollowing your cheeks and bobbing your head. You pull up almost all the way and focus on sucking the head for a beat and when your tongue dips into his slit, he moans loudly.
You pull off with a pop to catch your breath but continue to stroke him firmly. “As good as you were imagining, bub?” You tease, resting your head on his thigh.
“Always better than I imagine, love,” Cal pants, rubbing your back appreciatively. You flick your wrist in that way that always makes him crazy and he throws his head back and groans. “Gonna make you cum so many times when we get home,” he promises.
You smile at his vow. “Well in that case, let’s wrap this up,” you quip. He half-laughs, half-whines as you sink back down on him, letting him hit the back of your throat this time. You slide him almost entirely out of your mouth, swirl your tongue around his head and then take him back down, letting him hit the end of your throat again.
You repeat this move a few more times before you feel his grip in your hair tighten and hear a “Fuckin’ hell, baby... fuck…” warning. You quickly pull up, lips wrapped tight around him, tongue flicking across the tip, hand tugging at him rapidly. Moments later you feel his cum shooting across your tongue; you continue pulling at his cock, making sure you get every last drop out of him.
Cal murmurs to himself as he watches you swallow it all with ease and lovingly clean him up before tucking him back into his pants. You flash him a sweet smile and he pulls you towards him, kissing you tenderly. “Love you, baby,” he breathes.
“Love you too,” you reply and press another soft peck against his lips before returning to the passenger seat.
He leans back against the headrest and exhales loudly. He looks over at you, furrowing his brow for a second. “You really weren’t trying to start something with the way you were eating that ice cream?” He asks, eyebrow quirked.
You giggle, “Hand to god, I was just trying to help a man in need.”
Calum nods in understanding and then shrugs as he starts the car. “Well next time we get ice cream, we’re getting cups instead of cones. Your judgment clearly can’t be trusted,” he teases.

You can tell a lot about someone by the type of music they listen to 🎵🎶
Rules: Hit shuffle on your media player and write down the first 20 songs, (I stopped at 10 cause the post was getting waaayyy too long) then tag 10 people. No skipping!
Was tagged by @twilightmomentswithyou @calumrose and @devilatmydoor, thanks pals🥰
Already had a first go at it yesterday, but why not do it again! Decided to add my favourite lyrics from each song this time! (I think @pxrxmoore did that one time but I’m too lazy to check so Beth, if it wasn’t you, just go with it alright thanks haha)
Defeated - Bad Suns
“I don't wanna be left alone, uncompleted, no I don't wanna be all alone and defeated” (why did this have to be the first one, my heart wasn’t ready to get emo this quick)
Hide in Your Shell - Supertramp
“If I can help you, let me know, let me show you the nearest signpost, to get your heart back and on the road”
(Un)lost - The Maine
Ok but this song has some of my favourite lyrics EVER I could honestly just quote the whole song for this but let’s go with “I’m not looking to be found, just want to feel unlost” 🥺
Society - Eddie Vedder
“We have a greed with which we have agreed, you think you have to want more than you need, until you have it all you won't be free”
Mrs All American - 5sos
Nope. “That minivan that you drive really gets me going” hands down wins worst 5sos lyrics ever. Just no. As if this comes on the time I decide to do fav lyrics hahaha
Ask Yourself - Foster the People
“Is this the life you've been waiting for, or are you hoping that you'll be where you want with a little more? ”
Ora - Ludovico Einaudi
Well I hesited skipping this one cause there’s no lyrics, but we’re keeping it, it’s such a beautiful instrumental piece! Ludovico Einaudi is my go-to for study music
Then Again - Half Moon Run
“You get a piece of me, but I get an empty hand, all of the pieces fit, but that big picture's wrong”
My Type - Saint Motel
“When there's loving in the air, don't fight it, just keep breathing” (okay but like i really needed to hear that rn, lowkey never really stopped and listened to the lyrics of the song before and this just hit me like a truck)
Thin White Lies - 5sos
“I don't think I like me anymore, can someone tell me who I was before?” (another one that feels like a punch in the guts, and can we talk about how it’s the perfect lyrics to end the song with?? brilliant songwriting a+)
Tagging @blackbutterfliescal @pxrxmoore @boomerash @ashtonlrwin @mashlums @castaway-cashton as always only if you want to do it!

🕐When did you start writing? 📚 What was your first story about? 📖 What is your current story about? 🧨Tell me about your current antagonist! 🎶 Do you like listening to music while you write? (sorry I asked so much, I'm just really curious xD)
Oh boi! It always makes me curious who the anon is when they ask this much. Thank you!
I started writing late junior high, early high school, though I liked to tell stories a lot. Not fantasy stories or anything. I just talked a lot. I used it as a coping mechanism because, sad backstory TM, I didn’t really have any friends and I was super lonely.
My current story is summarized thusly:
Magic is a complicated thing. Especially when whole planets get involved. Taali and The Fen are constantly on the verge of destroying each other, only stopped by three spiraling moons Balancing the two. These moons are inhabited by the Castaways, the criminals that had performed terrible crimes with powerful magic and were thus cast from Taali, who have no memory of their pasts or what they had done to get Cast Out to the Balance, giving them a clean slate and another chance to discover who they want to be. Steve is one such Castaway who finds himself alone on one of the moons for several years. He encountered no one, growing more and more lonely and hopeless, until an amber-haired woman he vaguely recognizes steps from the shadows of the forest. A woman that stares at him with unfathomable loss and hatred before vanishing through a portal where he cannot follow. While searching for her, he discovers the Castaways of the darkest moon first, who take him in upon realizing his avid desperation to avoid being alone. Meanwhile, the people of Taali begin invading the peaceful moons to capture Steve’s newfound family, bent on using Castaway magic for Taali’s gain, no matter the consequences.
My first story was about a princess and a human raised by dragons going on a quest to collect magical ring and.... save the world or something? Honestly, the characters were very neat, worldbuilding could have used some work, and I ran out of plot because I wasn’t sure what I was doing. But one of my internet names, Clicker, came from it because my sibling’s favorite character from it was a hyperactive adventure heathen girl who made clicking noises when she got excited and my first true OC in my opinion.
My current antagonist is named Alex from Plains, Ether, Hearth. She is a military officer from Taali and a heccin jerk. She seems to know Steve from his past is just imposing and cold and hateful and hurt. She has no problem with killing or torture which means I’m super worried about the Balance Keepers who have been kidnapped by her.
And lastly, I love listening to music while I write. I have to listen to it or else I get distracted and don’t write. I listen mostly to instrumental fantasy tracks.
Thank you so much for the ask!

tysm to @clumsyclifford for tagging me! I still can’t actually believe it when I get tagged in things lol. PLEASE do not call me out for my very strange and noncohesive taste in music. also, my ability to ramble is unparalleled, so feel free to skip all the commentary bc I know I would.
Hometown by French 79: wow. I guess we’re starting off by exposing me and the techno/edm I listen to while studying/working. the lyrics in this song are practically non-existent, which is how I like my study music, but something about it is very soothing, while still being very fast-paced. I heard it/ some other songs on my study playlist described once as “orchestral electronic” and that seems very fitting. a good song, for sure, although I wouldn’t really say it plays a big role in my music taste.
False Confidence by Noah Kahan: the only noah kahan song that I had heard before actually getting into his music, and still one of my favorites. all of busyhead is honestly so good. I think I said this to bella once, but Noah Kahan has such a woodsy, cabin-in-Vermont vibe, and at the moment, I’m very into that.
High Highs to Low Lows by Lolo Zouaï: I really forgot this song existed. My cousin? second-cousin? (idk not much of my family is in the us, so whatever she is to me, we’re close) and I went to see Lolo Zouaï live on of our NYC trips. (Fun fact: this is the only concert I’ve ever been to!) I didn’t know anything about her until like a week before we went, so I listened to a bunch of her music for a week before and after seeing her, and then I forgot about it. It’s honestly pretty good, and her voice is very ethereal-sounding in parts, which is how I like to imagine mine sounds when I sing, so it’s fun trying to sing it.
Classic by MKTO: if I could pick a song to encompass the feeling of sixth grade, it would be this one. this really isn’t the type of music I’d usually choose to listen to, but I always let it play through when it comes on, for nostalgia purposes.
Castaway by 5SOS: YESSSSSS. Best song on SGFG, and no, I will not be taking any criticism. I adore Castaway with my entire heart, and even though I listen to it at least once a day on my morning run, I will never get sick of it.
Teeth by 5SOS: Speaking of getting sick of things... I mean, not really, but I also do not love this song anywhere near as much as I used to back in like March/April. This was one of the first songs by 5SOS that I listened to consistently, and probably THE one that convinced me to get more into their other music, so for that, it holds a special place in my heart, but I overplayed this wayyyy too much. Still good, but I’d prefer to not hear it for a while so I can get back to the place where I would scream-sing my heart out to this.
Mauja hi Mauja by Mika Singh: the first Bollywood song on the list! My parents actually introduced me to this one when I was like seven years old, and I’ve loved it ever since. It always puts a smile on my face, and it’s really fun to dance around my room to, which is always my main goal when listening to Bollywood.
Alejandro by Lady Gaga: Where did this even come from, and why do I still remember all the lyrics?
UNSTATUS QUO by Duckwrth: I originally listened to this bc I liked the title and as a pretentious debate nerd who used the phrase “status quo” at least four times a day, it felt like blasphemy not to. This is def my “cool kid in a movie walking down the street” song. It’s more... loud? cacophonous? than the music I usually listen to, but it really, really does make me feel cool. I think if I were to hear it more often than I do, I would probably stop liking it.
Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens: yeah, I don’t know about this one. I feel like I can only listen to this when I’m already sobbing, so I’m gonna skip it for now. I never actually watched CMBYN, so idk how I even found this song. ALSO fun fact, I found a ten hour loop of this song on youtube once, and listened to the whole thing in one sitting. as I’m sure you can guess, that was not a good day :)
Do I Wanna Know by Arctic Monkeys: bitches listen to one arctic monkeys song and think they’re indie, yeah, it’s me. I’m bitches.
Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex: wow, really proving my own point about only listening to very well-known indie music.
Greek God by Conan Gray: This song just FEELS aesthetic and I don’t quite understand that but I still like it.
Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood: it’s actually been a minute since I last heard this, but I still like it! I was def more attached to this song about two years ago, so I don’t have much to say about it anymore.
Summer is a Curse by The Faim: I actually heard this on a German tv show once and LOVED it. I really didn’t have any idea that Ashton was involved until a few months ago and I was like “wait, what??” it’s def a v good song, but I feel uncomfy endorsing/supporting it bc of the sexual misconduct allegations against one of the Faim’s members. Unfortunate, really, but that’s not something I can really get past.
Bang! by AJR: I’m surprised AJR hasn’t shown up sooner tbh. The “Metronome” line and “pretend you know this song everybody” are CONSTANTLY stuck in my head. If I could choose any concert to go to, it would be either AJR or 5SOS. They actually had a really cool socially-distant drive-in concert yesterday, but it was in Philly, which is a bit too far to drive the week before college starts.
Formidable by Stromae: <3 the song I was listening to when I made an ao3 account <3 I feel like I know too many people who had a Stromae phase. I don’t even understand French music all that well, but this is a bop.
Hasta el Amanecer by Nicky Jam: Damn, I just realized that there’s music in four languages on this list now. We stan multilingualism. This is one that I do actually understand most of the lyrics for, so we love that. It was fun listening to this again, bc I really haven’t heard it in at least a year.
Higher by The Score: The album that this is from came out on my birthday a few years ago! (just realized that there’s no recent music on this list, and if one thing describes my music taste accurately, it’s finding music a few years after it was released/popular). This is back from my soccer-playing days, and it was one of my pump-up songs for bus rides to away games. I think I might put this album back on regular rotation bc this is actually quite good!
No Control by One Direction: what even is there to say? I wasn’t really into 1D while they were actually active (rip me), and this is the song that made me give them a chance (chonce). perfect note to end on.
As for tagging others, I think I’ve avoided it enough times that I kind of have to now, so sorry in advance if 1. you’ve already done this/ been tagged and/ or 2. you have no idea who I am and are confused as to why I’m acting like I know you. I’ll just do the first ten people who pop up when I type the at symbol: @originalashstan @tothemoonmikey @5sos-fan-boy @calumcest @ashesonthefloor @kaleidoscopeminds @mashlums @poisonjaffas @tirednotflirting @fuckyeah5sostakemehome

-Nah, my family and I like to refer to me as the basement goblin. I feel like I live up to that name fairly well.

- I always have a story going in my mind but all of my pictures are mainly gameplay driven. Although recently for generation 2 I’ve been using poses for more storytelling purposes.
Your selfsim picture:
A lot has changed since my last simself, my hair is now LavaGirl pink and I’m getting my nose pierced on March 20th. I also now have a little semicolon tattoo on my left wrist.
Stories or gameplay, builds, lookbooks, edits or cc:

-Supernatural and Seasons are my all-time favorite EP’s and for Sims 4 I love City Living, Get Famous, and Parenthood with Realm of Magic.
How old is your simblr:
-I think it’s about two years old? I started it on 29 December 2017.
Have you woohooed:
- I feel like answering this is a bit strange since I’m 17, but in short yeah. Also, lowkey my body-count may or may not be 7 which is like 6 higher than September soooo.

Your favorite sim (picture if possible):
I have quite a few favorites but lowkey Amethyst/Lavender has become my all time favorite.

- Sims 2 castaway, Sims 3, Sims 4, Sims FreePlay, MySims, and The Sims’s Mobile
Propose a crazy scheme:
- I break into Tiffany’s at midnight. Do I go for the vault? No, I go for the chandelier, it’s priceless. As I’m taking it down, a woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It’s her father’s business. She’s Tiffany. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico but I go to Canada. I don’t trust her. Besides I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard. I have a son and he’s the chief of police. This is where the story gets interesting: I tell Tiffany to meet me in Paris by the Trocadero. She’s been waiting for me all these years; she’s never taken another lover. I don’t care, I don’t show up. I got to Berlin. That’s where I stashed the chandelier.
Best part of simblr:
- I love all of the stories on here and the amazing CC that people can create.
Worst part of simblr:
-The toxicity of people “stealing” others ideas as well as arguing over which game is better. Everyone needs to chill out, cause it’s literally just a game.
What other games you play:
- I absolutely love roleplaying games. I love Skyrim and have recently fallen in love with Outerworlds. I also have started playing Minecraft again and Stardew Valley.
Other websites or accounts (origin, twitter etc..):
- I don’t normally share these things but my personal Instagram is KMacken20 if you wanna follow.
Are you single:
- Yes and I’m kind of vibing honestly. Getting out of a 2-year relationship is kinda really freeing and it’s been super fun. In fact, my ex and I are actually best friends now, mainly because the reason we broke up was that he was gay.
I’m tagging whoever wants to do it, but I’ll also tag @melien, @amixofpixels, @simmeronnie, @deathflowertea, and @vintageplumbobs

A Happy Ending
One day you suddenly start hearing muffled voices and the amount of them slowly increases. Eventually, you find out that they are praying to you and that they are people from stories you have created! Somehow, they have gained sentience and have discovered that you created their world.
2.1k words
The air was dank and still as death itself. Suffocating, shoving its way into my throat and rotting my consciousness. The light of my lantern was the only thing keeping the monsters at bay, the only thing keeping their gnashing teeth from sinking it my skin.
“No no no,” I said aloud. “Too dark.”
I groaned and shoved the ancient typewriter away from me, then cracked open a lukewarm bottle of beer. I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ivory paper muddied by my words. Who was I kidding? I lost my touch. Ten years from the last time I wrote a paragraph had slipped through my fingers. Maybe in a past life the writing gods had blessed me, but in this one they only abandoned me.
After I chugged down the beer, I threw the empty bottle across the room, and it knocked my old cat in the head. He yawned and hissed at me, struggled to all fours, then bore his teeth—tail taut and stiff.
It wasn’t unusual for him to scold my self-loathing hijinks, but he would’ve calmed down by now. He stood up and trotted to the coat closet nestled in between the stairwell and the wall. He prodded the door with his paw. I stood up and leaned on my cane, then hobbled towards the closet. As I came closer, whispers leaked out and drifted into my ears. They were great in number and clamored over each other, yet I had never heard them before.
Palms sweaty, I nudged my cat away, cracked the door open, and peeked inside. A large portal, about six fee tall, hovered in the spot where my coats and jackets were supposed to be. The portal was bright and holographic, reflecting every light that touched it.
“What the hell,” I muttered.
The whispers grew louder, beckoning me like moths to a lamp. I stuck my fingers through, and after their tips brushed against silky foliage, I stepped through the portal. The whispers were deafening by now; saying, “Finish our story.”
I tripped on the seam of the portal and fell face-first into a pile of hangars and coats. I dug myself out and looked around to see five short figures, clad in dark, hooded cloaks, encircling me and chanting prayers and creeds. I stumbled back.
The tallest figure addressed me first. “We’ve done it!“
She whipped off her hood to reveal a pale, freckled face topped by ginger locks and bejeweled by emerald eyes. Her age shocked me the most; she had to be no older than eleven.
“Our creator has returned!” Her voice was girlish and innocent, with a tinge of exhaustion. “Everyone, bow!”
The four other figures collapsed to their knees, and the girl knelt at my feet.
“Wha—what is this?” I demanded, backing away.
The girl stood back up. “It’s me, Reese. You made me, remember?”
I picked through dusty, castaway memories.
“You were my first original character,” I said, half-guessing. “I created you as the main character for a book.”
Reese turned to the others, who pulled back their hoods as well.
“They remember! Do you remember anyone else?”
I studied the four faces. The boy with fluffy brown hair and brown eyes was Hunter, formerly Trevor. There was Jessie, Reese’s nerdy tech friend, with wild curly hair and dark skin. There was Missy, the resident mean girl turned buddy. And then there was . . . I grimaced.
“I’m sorry,” I said, turning towards the scrawny kid with messy, sand-colored hair. “I forgot your name.”
He gulped. “I uhh, can’t remember it either.”
“What?” I asked.
“Since you forgot it, so did he,” Reese said.
I stared at all of them. “How is this possible? How are you all . . . alive?”
“We’ve always been alive,” said Hunter, “from the moment you first thought of us. You are our benevolent god, and when you left us, we were forced to become sentient of our existence.”
“Okay, now this is getting a little creepy.”
“We just want you to set us free,” begged Missy. “We’ve been trapped here, in a static world that doesn’t change, expand, or age. We don’t how long it’s been. Time is an illusion here.”
“And how do I ‘set you free’, exactly?”
“Finish our story,” replied Reese. “Once you do, we’ll be able to take control of our own actions and world.”
I looked around me. I stood in a giant, lush forest. The grass was emerald green, the trees looked as if they touched the clouds, and wildlife was abundant. But as I examined closer, ominous things stuck out. I could feel no wind, the grass and leaves and foliage were beautiful in an unnatural way, and the animals moved stiffly, as if they were robots enslaved to a pre-written script. Even the horizon seemed empty and vague, like you’d fall off the edge of the earth if you left the forest.
“So I have to write the ending to the novel you guys were all in,” I said.
“Yes, but it has to be a real continuation, a real ending,” said Reese. “You have to put as much effort into it as you did before.”
I cringed. “Listen guys, I’m sorry, but I can’t do that. It’s been ten years since I tried writing anything—The Secret Forest was my last project.”
“But you have to help us,” chimed in the boy whose name I forgot.
“I said I can’t!”
I retreated towards the portal, but I secretly didn’t want to leave. I was curious and wanted to explore the world I had created.
“I knew they wouldn’t help us,” muttered Jessie.
“I’m not surprised either,” said Missy. “They abandoned us before anyway. Looks like you were wrong, prophet.”
Reese sighed and grabbed my arm. “Hey, can you at least stay with us for a bit? Maybe you’ll change your mind? Tell us about the universe you live in.”
The offer tempted me. “All right, fine.”
So I stayed there, in the forest. At first I forgot all about my cat, but he ventured through the portal and Missy found him on the second night. She continued to coddle the lively thing.
After spending time with the nameless boy, where he showed me magic tricks and told funny jokes, I decided to call him Curly. It wasn’t a great name, or even a good one, but Reese said once I finished the story, he’d be able to change it for himself.
In speaking of finishing the story, Reese still acted like I would do it, which made me uncomfortable. I distracted myself by spending hours building skyscrapers and transformer cars with Jessie.
I painted my face in striking colors and tried on dazzling clothes with Missy. Suits, dresses, she owned everything.
Hunter didn’t like me very much, and Reese told me it was because he was jealous. She was the main character, and so he was he, but slightly less so. He believed he should’ve been the prophet—the main character.
“But I still like him,” she said, sighing.
“Eugh,” I replied.
“What? He is the love interest after all! You used to ship us.”
“Yeah, but not anymore. Honestly, now that I look back, all of you guys sucked.”
Reese was taken aback. She shifted on the large tree branch we were sitting on. “Excuse me?”
“I’m just saying, all of you are one-sided and poorly developed. I based all of your personalities off of stupid tropes, you know. And you’re a friggin’ self-insert from when I was like, eleven.”
A tear welled in her eye. “You shouldn’t be so hard on yourself,” she choked out. “You had just started writing.”
“Yeah, but I could’ve done better. That’s why I quit, you know? I just didn’t like what I was writing. It was just so . . . bad. Everything, the plot, the world-building, and especially the characters.”
By now her face was red as rubies. “But you are going to finish our story, right?”
I shrugged. “I dunno. Do I want to? I don’t really care or like any of you so. I’m not a writer anyway, not anymore.”
She turned away. “You don’t know what it’s like,” she muttered, “to not have name. You don’t know what it’s like being trapped, in a median where you’re never truly caught nor free. You don’t know what it’s like staring into the eyes of someone who loves you back, but you can’t have them. Or even confess to them. You don’t know what hopelessness feels like”
“Well, fun fact—I do,” I snorted. “Man, that sure was a dramatic monologue. Don’t remember writing you as the emo trope.”
Reese gasped and jumped down from the tree, landing with grace on the mossy ground. “Fine!” she yelled. “Go home then! Keep Hunter and I apart! Keep all of us from living our lives!”
She stormed off towards the waterfall and swiped her arm across her face.
I groaned and slipped down the tree, with much less precision and poise. I began to follow her, but Hunter appeared and stopped me.
“You should probably let her be,” he said. “Listen, I’m not going to tell you what to do, I’m not going to give you some stupid pep talk about how you’re still a writer. Maybe you are, maybe you’re not. You don’t have to keep writing, and you don’t even owe us a happy ending. But remember that you created something you still control, and you’re responsible for it.”
I stared at him. “Well, I certainly don’t remember writing you like this either.”
“Every character has potential,” he responded.
I thought for a moment, then turned and headed to the waterfall.
Reese bent over her reflection as it rippled with the waves. The waterfall towered over her, pouring gallons of sapphire liquid from an eternal source.
“It’s the only area that changes,” she explained, hearing us approach.
“Do you have a typewriter I could borrow?” I asked.
She didn’t look at me. “What’s a typewriter?”
“You’ll uh, you’ll find out. Is there any paper around, then? I need lots of it.”
“Why?” she asked, solemn.
“Guess.”
She stood up. “What made you change your mind?”
Hunter nudged me and whispered, “Don’t tell her I did it, she will not like that.”
“I just decided to,” I said. “Do I have to like, put something that indicates it’s the end?”
“No,” Reese said. “It’s the end whenever you decide it’s the end. You have to return home first, I imagine. Since our world will change drastically when you close it off.”
“Of course.”
So Curly came over and slapped down a stack of fresh copy paper while Missy gave me her lucky pencil and eraser. Then I got settled in the lush grass and wrote and wrote, scribbling my heart and mind out.
For the first few hours writer’s block trapped me, but my characters gave me ideas and helped me fight through it. Callouses formed on my fingers, my eyes were bloodshot, but I kept pressing the lead to paper. Missy’s pencil was soon ground to a nub, and eraser bits covered the area.
I wrote from sun up to sun down, and once I was nearly done I wished everyone goodbye—Curly, Missy, Jessie, Hunter, and Reese. Missy gave back my old cat, who had warmed up quite a bit to her.
They escorted me to the field where they prayed before, and I helped Reese summon another portal. Everyone waved and cheered as I stepped through—papers, cat, and coats in my arms.
I tumbled out of the closet and sealed the portal, then sat down in front of my typewriter and put the finishing touches on the ending. Once I was sure it was done, I wrote, ‘The End’ in big, bold letters, just to make it official.
It was a rough draft, so it was far from perfect. I knew that. But I didn’t mind this time.
I leaned back and wondered what kind of life my characters would lead. Jessie might become a NASA scientist; Curly a stand-up comedian or perhaps a famous Youtuber; Missy a fashion designer; Reese an environmental activist; and Hunter would follow her where ever.
Afterwards, I never wrote again.
THE END
So this was for a mini-contest. I know it’s vaguely personal essay-esque, because I feel like if my ocs came to life there’d be a certain set that would be very upset with me. My first idea was that the ocs would kidnap me and take me to their world because this crazy serial killer from another story I wrote somehow escaped into their world, and I would be the only one who could stop him. That idea would have had more of a humorous slant, but in the end I just went with this one.

♥ it’s time to spread your podcast palette ♥
We’re late into July with August around the corner and the fall slowly but soon enough approaching us. Before the thrills that come with fun in the sun are washed away like sand in the sea, let’s settle under the shade with the best sounds I could find.
Survive, conquer, and stay underground as these picks will ease you through the remainder of your summer days with some style.
Looking for something fresh to please that sudden thirst for audio storytelling? Look no further as PodCake has six more podcasts you’ll certainly love.
1. The Far Meridian
The Far Meridian tells the story of Peri, an agoraphobic young woman whose home starts to show up in a new location every day, as she searches for her missing brother.
From the same people who brought you Ars Paradoxica comes The Far Meridian, a vastly different direction from their usual time crunching with the same sense of suspense, sarcasm, and psychological storytelling you’ve grown to love coupled with excellent writing and music composition.
Follow along with our darling heroine, Peri as she must fight against her fears to solve a pressing mystery that might be deeper than it seems at first glance. You can tackle this one in or outdoors to your leisure.
2. Liberty
Welcome to the world of Liberty – serialized sci-fi tales told in comic books and audio drama stories. The colony of Atrius has been cut off from humanity and endured generations of civil war. What remains is a gleaming city and beyond its walls, a lawless expanse known as the Fringe. Liberty features many tales from this world such as the harrowing Fringe expedition series Critical Research and standalone horror stories of Tales from the Tower.
From Critical Research to Tales from the Tower, Liberty comes with a couple of quality tales that may tickle your fancy and your ears. Start off first with Critical Research as we tag along with a special group sent to investigate the treacherous Southern Fringe.
Though if this promising crew will be prepared for what’s the come is the real question. I’d say count your bullets, save your audio logs, and try to stay alive for this one. (It even has a blooper reel.)
3. Radiation World
Three thousand years since nuclear devastation has razed society to nothing, humans have moved underground to eke out a meager survival while outside the wild has taken over, mutating beyond anything anyone can remember or imagine. When a group of mysterious visitors arrive on a ship, our heroes must make a quest across the wild, encountering an abundance of adventures along the way.
For those who want to take their apocalypse stories a little less seriously comes Radiation World. When the world becomes inhabitable due to nuclear devastation, what better way to get by than passing time in the best bunker available and maybe setting up a sacrifice…if you have the time.
If you’re a fan of The Bunker with a bit of Wooden Overcoats style comedy and Our Fair City levels of world building, and still need your fill of catastrophic hi-jinks, this might be the best pick for your survival kit. In other words, it’s everything you’ve ever wanted.
4. The Orphans
A tale of survival on an unknown world. The Orphans is a cinematic audio drama chronicling the castaways of downed starship, The Venture - Stranded on a hostile planet, struggling to remember how they arrived and who they are. Mysterious creatures hunt them, and in this seemingly unpopulated world, a tower looms.
When a group of survivors of a crashed ship are thrown into a vast alien world, it’ll take only their wits and teamwork to get by and get back on the track home. The Orphans comes with a cast of colorful characters all with witty banter and some fairly badass moments sprinkled in between some honestly sincere and sweet ones.
In this fast paced story of survival against the odds and a dangerous alien wilderness comes a podcast chock full of fascinating scenarios for those looking for the most out of their sci-fi. You’ll land safely with this one.
5. Hector Vs The Future
The world’s largest museum of obsolete technology is threatened with closure unless Hector - its cantankerous, turnkey-operated clockwork curator - can match the popularity of the cutting-edge Uptodateum across the road. Only George - the mild mannered in-house caretaker with the mysterious past - steps up to help him.
Rev up your outdated technology and tune that dusty radio to Hector Vs The Future, a comedy podcast for those stuck in the good old days and just too hipster to pass up a show that lovingly revels in the past.
Those who love their goofball science fiction comedies like Hadron Gospel Hour will enjoy the quirky sense of humor and the occasional musical number derived from situational gags and absurdity. Concluded at only seven episodes and last updated in the distant past of 2016, Hector Vs The Future will offer you just the right amount of entertainment in the present day.
6. Otherverse
Otherverse is a serialized science fiction audio drama podcast. The story follows the invasion of Earth by aliens from another universe, and an alien that wants to save humanity from destruction through their surrender. Invasion is not a simple task.
Hello and welcome to a radio frequency playing from another universe. A higher plain of life has taken over and has been kind enough to offer this nifty little show in our wake. From some of the same minds behind Jim Robbie comes a hefty dose of science fiction black comedy from the eyes of aliens.
Though early in production, Otherverse does make a good first impression with its fairly original premise and inspired narrative that is sure to blossom into some excellent stories in the future. It’s best to sit down surrender, and face the noise.
now, get to listening.♥

Birthday Stranger #9 (2020)
“It is true that those we meet can change us, sometimes so profoundly that we are not the same afterwards, even unto our names.”
— Pi Patel in Life of Pi by Yann Martel
First, thank you A.M. for taking time out of your life to meet with a complete stranger. Our conversation enriched my life. I wish you all the best.
There are three types of fencing: foil, épée & sabre - each a little different. A.M. had an early interest in fencing & got into it later in life. As I listened to her talk about fencing, it became obvious to me why sabre is her preferred discipline.
Though fencing may seem to have little in common with her current job in Human Resources, there’s a thread that runs through both & stitches her life together in a brilliant way. This thread consists of being proactive & utilizing all available resources.
A.M. spent her childhood outside of Peoria, Illinois with her parents & two younger sisters. She mentioned having varying degrees of relationships with them. As we talked about her childhood she mentioned how her family changed over the years after her parents’ divorce. A.M. cited her mother’s shift to a more progressive viewpoint as one outcome. From the interest & sincerity A.M. exhibited in our conversation it’s clear that A.M.’s mom raised her daughters to be ambitious mature women. “She's an amazing individual & sacrificed a lot for us,” is how A.M. describes her.
She & I had a wonderful discussion about the changes that growing up entails. A.M. told me that, now that she has moved closer to her mom again, she has received a number of boxes from her filled with personal items & old school projects. A.M. said some of the positions held in a few of those early school projects are completely cringe-worthy. She laughed when I quoted an unknown source; “You know you are growing as a person if you continue to look back & cringe at some of your decisions.” A few of her childhood dreams have remained the same though.
One example of A.M.’s ambition is from around age nine. She recalls an article from an airline magazine about the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta held in New Mexico. The countless forms & colors of the balloons stuck with her over the years and is still a life goal of hers to experience. That location is actually marked on a map that she & her husband keep of places they would like to visit together.
Another example of her good upbringing is her mother’s urging her daughters to grow outside of their comfort zone. Each daughter studied abroad to this end. A.M. herself did this in Italy.
Her journey came with an unexpected turn. This is where her proactive nature ripened.
A.M. traveled to Italy & stayed with a host family for her study abroad program at the age of 17. Within the first month she accompanied the family on a trip to their own relatives in Croatia.
She commented that tensions within the host family grew shortly after departure & added: “I didn’t think anything of the arguing.”
These arguments gave rise to a full-blown family dispute upon return to Italy. The next morning A.M. woke to find herself in a nearly empty house. A family schism had formed overnight & everyone but the grandmother had moved out with their belongings.
Understandably upset, A.M. walked into town to access the internet & contact her mom to tell her what was going on. A.M. highlighted the time difference as her major obstacle. Her family would be sleeping between 3 & 4 AM central time.
She contacted a friend who happened to be up during those wee hours. This friend in turn phoned A.M.’s mother who finally connected with her daughter.
She managed to turn an unsettling situation into a positive & memorable experience thanks her being proactive & using the resources at hand; she traveled to Hungary to visit extended family then to England to spend some time with a friend of her mother’s before finally returning home. What she called, “not a full year but a good story,” is an understatement. Honestly, if this had happened to me at seventeen I’d probably have freaked the hell out.
“I had to stop hoping so much that a ship would rescue me. I should not count on outside help. Survival had to start with me. In my experience, a castaway’s worst mistake is to hope too much and to do too little. Survival starts by paying attention to what is close at hand and immediate. To look out with idle hope is tantamount to dreaming one’s life away.”
— Pi Patel in Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Her return to the states was a return to academia. A.M. majored in religious studies.
She said, “I’ve always [been] interested in people’s views on religion.” A.M. attributes these studies as what ‘broke’ her, as she put it, of Christianity. I find it interesting that she occasionally likes attending church to “see the [current] interpretation of what is read, what the pastor thinks is a good sermon & what the [believers] focus on.”
A.M.’s college also put her in contact with her now long-term interest of fencing. It is not an affordable sport, she explained. Though she could afford to join the college fencing club, enrollment had recently closed. Eager to hold a sword & ready to undertake any measure to make it happen she followed the coach’s advice of attending a weekend clinic held by the club. A.M. not only attended the entire two-day clinic but outlasted every other beginner. She made it in the club that day.
Though she combats irregularly, A.M. has coached & refereed sabre fencing for a handful of years. Her favorite age group to work with is 8 to 12 year olds. She says this is because they “understand what you want them to do & generally want to do what you tell them to do.” Her work in the sport reaches beyond overseeing individual fencers & bouts, however; as A.M. put it, “I see a need & just want to fill that need.”
Unhappy with increasing harassment in the sport, A.M. performed studies on sexual harassment & assault in fencing & has published her findings online.
A.M. did not consider marriage for most of her life. She said she had little interest in the type of relationship that eventually divided her parents. Consequently she lived a mostly autonomous life attending schools in different states. One longstanding male friend of hers, though, made a point to visit her in many of these places. This deepening friendship lead A.M. to ask herself if marriage was on the table.
Before that question could be answered their relationship had one more hurdle; while her partner lived in St. Louis, A.M. had just been accepted to grad school in New York. A.M. & her boyfriend managed not only to make the long distance thing work for two & a half years but also planned their life.
After earning her degree she moved to St. Louis. It was A.M.’s belief that moving in with her fiancée who already had a job & a house “made more sense.” This practical outlook is another example of her proactive nature.
Her grad school studies lead to her current position in human resources. A.M. credits a few “happy accidents” to the exact position she had at the time we met. She since has been promoted with expanded responsibilities. (Congratulations, A.M.!) She also may go back to school, citing: “the people who have the jobs I want in my department all have higher education than I do.”
Expanded responsibilities may sound daunting but she noted that she is usually a bearer of good news. I imagine working with the dynamics between an institution & a large number of employees utilizes similar skills as in sabre fencing: being proactive & taking advantage of available resources.
This is the thread I mentioned earlier. A.M. take on fencing also speaks to her approach to life: “What I like about sabre is its very proactive compared to épée & foil. You have to make the decision before the referee says fence...” Not to mention that sabre is different from the other disciplines in that strikes with the edge of the blade count in addition to strikes with the tip... that is, there is more to utilize during a bout.
This is a clear parallel to the way A.M. lives her life. Here’s another example: A.M. began crocheting recently to deal with increasing acute physical restlessness. She initially learned it from her mom’s mom, “Oma”. She found that keeping her hands busy helps her relax & allows her sit still for longer periods of time. Repetitive motion is quite meditative not to mention productive in this case - she’s got more sweaters & scarves now.
We also talked favorite movies. A.M. enthusiastically identified Life of Pi as hers. (Hence the quotes that fit in nicely with her life story.) Her religious studies introduced her to this movie - one she described as having “captured the essence of the book perfectly.” Elaborating she said, “I loved how it [is] blend of religions. The thing that [is] important to me [is that] it's not about whether or not the guy is right or wrong, [it’s] all about the faith of [the viewer] to determine whether or not they have faith in what he's saying - which is just a play on religion overall.” I found deep appreciation of that sentiment.
Never has it been so clear to me that a person’s favorite movie echoes their own way of living. {NO SPOILERS} In the movie Pi is nothing less than fully proactive facing uncertainty. He uses everything at hand as well; there is not one item he takes for granted floating aimlessly in the ocean.
A.M. has these qualities. Without giving anything away, I want to point out that Pi’s narration of the calamity he endures proved a foundation for his own faith in humanity as well as the viewer’s. I can’t help but feel those who know A.M. likewise benefit from her friendship. This is especially true during the outbreak we are all facing right now {note: this write-up was done mid-March 2020 during the Coronavirus pandemic).
The pandemic highlights exactly how the actions of one person can ripple across the planet. As powerless as we feel I see so many people taking innovative & fresh action to make it better. We all have something to offer. The sooner we see that the better. We don’t all have to drown during this difficult time.
A mouthful of water will not harm you, but panic will. — Mamaji to Pi in Life of Pi by Yann Martel
And to A.M., I will alter a quote from the movie to fit my feelings about your sharing your life with me: “How bitterly glad I am to have met you. You brought joy & pain in equal measure. Joy because you shared yourself with me, but pain because it wasn't for long.”

[Ys VIII] Endtimes Reflections
After eight grueling days and 100+ hours, my journey on the Isle of Seiren with Adol and his team has come to a close. Ys VIII: The Lacrimosa of Dana was the first Ys game I’ve played through its entirety, though not that first Ys I’ve ever owned. It probably was the wrong place to start the series, but what can I say, good decisions aren’t my forte.
It’s been two days since the end credits rolled, and a dreary gloom has settled over me, which can only mean one thing: a long ramble must be had.
Spoilers abound, so the remainder is behind the cut.
Despite the game committing several writing sins in the prologue, by the time Adol met Laxia and the two began to explore the island, I was hooked. The battle system is probably to blame for this; it’s an absolute blast. The game does a wonderful job weaving together the three plot threads--the mystery of the Ancient Species, the mystery of Adol’s dreams, and the survival situation--in a way that keeps the player constantly moving. Having never played an Ys game prior to this, I found myself pleasantly surprised by it all. My only complaint was that the emergency battles were tedious, but it’s a minor quibble at best.
The castaways’ experience stirs up some fellow feeling within me. In my own life, I’m currently a bit of a virtual castaway myself, if in a metaphorical sense. For the past year I’ve been experiencing some intense upheaval and transition in my life currently, and have been doing a lot of soul searching. It was a treat to find not only characters in my age bracket in this game, but to find that they hadn’t yet found their callings either or at least made their callings work for them was a breath of fresh air. Usually these kinds of games focus on young people, which is the target audience of course, but it’s nice to have peripheral characters who are experiencing adult issues.
My own situation in life is probably why I bonded so fiercely with all the characters. Plus playing every day for over 12 hours didn’t help much, I’m sure. It really did feel as though I would go to bed, and then get up in the morning and go exploring with my team. We’d battle giant dinosaurs or hunt for those pesky treasure chests or expand our map horizons. It was a grand adventure, and in a dull and dreary life, a little adventure is a great spice, even if it is only virtual at best.
This is probably why the ending hit me as hard as it did.
Despite how much I enjoyed the full game experience, including the ending, I found myself deeply dissatisfied with how the ending unfolded. Partly this is due to the fact that by this point I’d looked into the other Ys games and discovered Adol normally adventures alone or with new party members each game, and that it’s rare for Adol to encounter former allies and friends in new installments.
But more than that, I think my dissatisfaction stems from not wanting the journey to be over. In my real life, I lost my own team in a devastating way, and this was the first time in over a year I’d felt like I’d had friends again. It’s silly for a grown woman to attach herself so to a bunch of characters, but something about the way the story and the battle system unfolded made me feel a part of the group. Adol being a silent protagonist assists with this, of course. Regardless, losing the team and watching them scatter hurt a lot more than I expected and I’m having a bit of separation anxiety even though I can play the game again if it really is that bad, lol.
It’s funny because I’m a huge Zelda fan, yet I’ve never had this sort of reaction to the end of a Zelda game. Likely this is due to Link’s adventures being for the most part isolated other than periodic assistance from fairies or townsfolk, and also because I know I’ll meet “Link” and “Zelda” again over and over in new reincarnations. Adol’s stories are much more final--he only has one short life, and the likelihood of meeting these friends again is slim. In a way, it’s rather like reality--we can replay the game and enjoy the memories again, but we can’t go on a new adventure with those same people. Yet Adol will still go on adventures in future installments and past installments and his story will continue, but without them.
Still, despite not wanting to part with everyone, and despite not knowing when Adol will return to me with a new adventure to enjoy, I found the game encouraging to me in my own life situation. I won’t be able to change all at once, but even the castaways took their time to steadily work toward their goal--it took them almost a year to make it off the island. If they can do that, maybe I still can too. It’s fun, because the adventure changed the castaways and me with them. I get up in the mornings now and think about what adventures I’d like to have, and it changes the whole color of the day.
Heh, a strange experience, to be sure. But there’s something about slaying huge dinosaurs and saving the world from annihilation that makes you feel you can take on the world again, even after it’s crushed you to bits. =)
This is a little silly too (and rather random), but I hated having to complete my bestiary by killing the Dyrodox on the plains. I don’t think I’ve ever cried so hard in my life over killing a monster. He never once tried to hurt me; he kept trying to run away. It was the most pathetic battle in history and I just felt horrible and depressed every second. Then I had to kill him again because the doofus didn’t give me all his rare items! It wasn’t as hard the second time, because I distracted myself with some youtube, but goodness I cannot believe the nerve of this game to make you kill a precious buttercup like the Dyrodox in order to complete your bestiary. Thank goodness we have a New Game+ so I don’t have to do that ever again.
I hadn’t anticipated diving into all the heavy things on my mind so early, but at least that leaves us with the fun and silly things for last. So, this is where I should have started lol. The whole reason I bought the darn game in the first place was because of these two kids--I have three cardinal rules for stories: 1) the presence of a cute guy, 2) the presence of a cute girl, 3) a great narrative. Since you can’t tell #3 until you give a story a try, usually #1&2 are good initial tests for me (I do make exceptions of course, because not all masterpieces have pretty packaging, but I find these rules work out pretty well for me).
So I went into this game knowing nothing about Ys (and how many darn women Adol has in his harem haha), and expecting an epic love story a la Lunar. Silly me. Instead what I got was a wonderful story of friendship, camaraderie, and appreciation. The narrative focal point was on how the team opened themselves up to Dana and accepted her burdens as their own.
Strangely, I wasn’t all that disappointed to see that Adol and Dana only had the faintest of budding relationships. Despite being connected across time and space and dreaming of each other, their relationship remained shallow with very little development other than what you’d expect out of comrades. Even Dana’s farewell and Adol’s reaction to her disappearance trended more toward the platonic than the romantic. Laxia’s budding feelings for Adol were much more apparent and fleshed out than anything Dana seemed to express toward Adol.
To be fair, Dana had a great deal of trouble and responsibility resting on her shoulders, which doesn’t allow for much time for romance. Even her quest was focused around friendship, with Adol merely assisting her. I suppose ultimately it’s good that nothing came of their interactions, given the ending.
So I come out of this game with no ship, which didn’t disappoint me as much as I thought it would. I loved all the characters, and the friendship was more than enough to enjoy.
While I’m on the subject of Dana, I really enjoyed how the fitting the title was on two levels. The first level is the obvious one of course, that our band of castaways was caught up in Dana’s extended lacrimosa. But the ending of the game gives the title a different twist as well--Dana becomes literally the goddess in charge of the lacrimosa. All lacrimosas from henceforth are hers to command. This was a neat little twist, and although I’d expected her to sacrifice herself in some way, it was a pleasant surprise that her ultimate fate landed us with a new interpretation of the game’s title.
This story was ultimately Dana’s in the same way Twilight Princess was Midna’s story in the Zelda franchise. Although Adol and his crew played key roles and were indispensable to the success of her plan, ultimately it was her will and her goals the story was pursuing all along. Adol was just along for the ride, which perhaps is true of all his adventures. He seems more of a journey sort of chap.
And last, but certainly not least in my heart, is my beloved Hummel. He got me good, I’ll admit it. At first I just liked his design and the fact that he was a long range character, but his personality was nothing to speak of.
Then the story starts peeling back the layers bit by bit. He’s good with kids. He’s affectionate to animals. He’s got a weird but honorable code despite working in the black market. He wants to make sure his clients enjoy the items he brings to them and gets bummed out if he doesn’t get the opportunity to find out. He likes to juggle.
By the end of the game everything Hummel does and says is too precious for this world. Honestly given how affectionate he was with Adol in his scenes, I was shipping the two of them more than any of the other girls, lol. Hummel’d be the best boyfriend. (But then I find out he turns down some chick later, which only increases my suspicions that he’s in Adol’s harem too!)
Heh I feel much better now that I’ve had my ramble. I’ve been listening to the full soundtrack nonstop since I stopped playing the game. There are some fantastic pieces on it.
I guess I didn’t say much about or intrepid hero. Adol’s character design is gorgeous--I hope they keep the cute red outfit he wears as his default in the future installments (or at least offer it as a DLC for me fufu). But most of Adol’s response choices are a ton of fun, and I love that he’s snarky as well as kind. I got the biggest kick out of him and Sir Carlan (Sir Carlan actually was one of my favorite characters lol).
This was also the first game where I was able to get a 100% complete without using a walkthrough and only checking the gamefaqs forums for individual bestiary items I missed out on. Dumb achievement to be proud of, but I’m so inept at being a completionist that I always have to rely on other people for help. It was nice to be able to figure out all the secrets on my own for once. =)
Oh and this cracked me up but...I started playing Ys VIII as soon as it arrived in the mail on my Vita. Low and behold I found out that there was no Japanese language option on the day one release! My inner weabo was outraged to the point that I almost refused to play. But then I talked myself out of it, and continued the game. As soon as Hummel arrived in my party, I fell in love with his English voice and once that happened I forgot all about my outrage.
Then I find out (when I’m nearing the last chapter of the game) that there’s a free Japanese DLC for the Vita finally. So I download it, eagerly wanting to hear what I missed out on. And low and behold, the characters sound “wrong” to me because I’ve played them in English the whole time. =P Plus I preferred Hummel’s English voice to his Japanese! Such a travesty. This is why one should never play the dub first. =P It makes things turn out all wrong!
Anyway, silly story aside, Ys VIII was a great experience and I’m now interested in trying out the other titles. I’ve picked up Ys I & II Chronicles, and I’m quite enjoying the original bump battle system. I’d like to play the games in order (excluding Origins) this time. I do feel I missed out on a bit having never played the games before. Some of the country references and a few of the characters we met were clearly from previous adventures or future ones. No matter, I’ll fix all this soon enough.
And I think that’s more than enough babbling about one game for this evening. If anyone has actually made it this far, I salute you! You are the true champion of this day!
May your own adventures continue!
