Here In Your Arms (Bucky Barnes)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 2,007
Summary: You lost the man you loved in the war and all you want was for him to come back even after marrying someone else.
Warnings: Fluff, and maybe a bit of angst. It’s AU.
Author’s Note: Just a little drabble I thought of. I don’t know if I should add another part to this because it’s kind of left at a cliffhanger. You’ll know what I am talking about when you finish this. Sound off in the comments if you want a part two! <3
“Come on, darling, don’t be like that.”
Your arms crossed over your chest as you turned your back on your husband as you walked down the hall. The arguments never stopped. He was such an ignorant man that only wanted to marry you for your good looks. It was a mistake marrying him because now you were the mayor’s wife. You knew that he wasn’t the one that you were supposed to marry, but you had to move on from the pain of losing the one man that meant the most to you.
He was a husband that provided for you and got you everything you wanted. He was safe and tame. A man that a lot of the women wanted but couldn't because he was “in love” with you. You should have been happy, but you weren’t. Maybe in the beginning when he came into your life during a time of grief made him to be that man you wanted. It took marrying him for you to figure out that he wasn’t the man for you.
The husband you wanted disappeared in the war.
Bucky Barnes was the man you wanted to marry. He wasn’t rich. He wasn’t safe and tame. Women wanted him, but he loved you. You were the only woman who swept him off his feet and left him guessing, which drove him absolutely crazy. He was the man that you were supposed to marry when he came back home.
“Come on, darling, don’t be like that,” Bucky laughed as he pulled you into his arms in the center of your living room. You couldn’t help but to melt into him as he held you tight with a lingering smile when he added a kiss to the top of your head. Staying upset with Bucky was hard to do when he knew how to charm you. “I’ll be back before you know it, you’ll hardly miss me with the boyfriends you got lined up,” he said with an added chuckle.
You couldn’t help the giggle that fell from your lips, but you were also sad. When he showed up in his uniform and told you the news that he was shipping out, you were devastated. That was why you tried to walk away from him, but he pulled you in and just like that you couldn’t be upset with his choice. You knew he was doing it for the country. For a better future. He wouldn’t be gone long, he promised, but you knew that was a lie. A lie that you would keep being a truth.
“Charlie has been waiting for me, so I guess I’ll start dating him,” you teased, “I’ll be married by the time you come back.”
“Is that right, sweetheart?” Bucky questioned as he looked down at you with a grin. “You can’t get married when you’re wearing that ring on your finger.” He brought your left hand up to eye level after intertwining your fingers, a low whistle came from his lips. “You know what that means?” His gaze went from the ring on your finger to your eyes.
“Enlighten me, Buck,” you cooed, gazing into his eyes with a smile on your face.
“That means no one else can have ya. You’ll be Mrs. Barnes once I get back,” he answered, bringing your hand to his lips and pressed kisses along your knuckles as he continued to gaze into your eyes that were full of love. “Do me a favor?”
“Yes, darling?” You whispered.
“Never take it off even when you marry Charlie,” he told you, not being able to keep the truthful joke that you started out.
You laughed, and he grinned at you. “I promise,” you told him before pressing a loving kiss to his waiting lips.
The promise was never broken, you kept that ring on your finger. Even Charlie knew that you would never take it off, and he had no shame when he chased you when Bucky shipped off. He tried to charm you, shower you with gifts, and everything in between. When Steve found out, fulfilling his duty on watching over his best friend’s girl, he wasn’t exactly nice about it. Bless his soul though, you appreciated the fact Steve was protecting you when he could.
Once word was spread that Steve had shipped off, which came as a surprise to everyone, Charlie came back. He didn’t care about that ring. All he wanted was you.
He was there when you received the letter that made your heart break. You knew it was bad news when a military officer showed up at your doorstep with a folded flag and somber eyes. Your world came crashing down when you read that he was gone, and you sobbed. At your doorstep you crumpled down to your knees as your heart shattered in a million pieces, and Charlie was there to pick you up again.
“You know he isn’t coming back, so why do you keep that ring on when we’re married?” He asked you.
That was the start of the argument. He was fed up with the fact that you never took off the ring, and the band to unite your union went above it. Bucky told you to keep it on, and so you did. You never were going to break that promise.
“You know why, Charles,” you scoffed.
“It’s been five years! Stop holding onto him because he’s dead.”
You sucked in a breath of air as you felt the low blow. Bucky’s death had always been a touchy subject and Charlie knew that. Whenever he spoke about Bucky, he would always apologize and cradle you in his arms. Not tonight. How could you be holding onto a dead man in your heart when you had a man like Charlie?
Shaking your head, you reached for the ring that was seated on your finger above the one that truly mattered.
“I’m not chasing you if you walk out that door,” Charlie told you, watching you with wide eyes as you placed the wedding ring on the table.
“Then don’t,” you muttered as you grabbed your coat from the rack. You stayed strong as you walked out the door, putting on the coat that reminding you of Bucky.
You pulled your coat closer to you as you walked further away from your home. It was cold. The smell of Bucky’s cologne lingered, which gave you comfort even when you were angry at him. Your name was being called repeatedly, but you didn’t stop. You didn’t stop until a hand was grabbing your arm and you knew it was him.
“You said you weren’t going to chase after me,” you muttered, bringing your hand up to wipe the tears from your eyes.
“I’m sorry,” Bucky croaked, and you could hear the regret in his voice. You didn’t stop him as he pulled you into his arms, you could feel him shivering because you had taken his coat. “I don’t want us to be fighting, sweetheart, not before I leave. I said things that I shouldn’t have said, and I know that hurt you.”
You wrapped your arms around him, burying your face in his chest as he smoothed out your hair and kissed the top of your head. “You’re not going to die, James, you promised that you would marry me and make me Mrs. Barnes,” you cried into his chest, clinging to him like your life depended on it.
He didn’t know why he promised when he didn’t have a clue if he was going to return. All he knew was that he was going to try his hardest to fight the war and come home to you. Marry you and have children. That enough was motivation to keep him alive. It was his fault for thinking of the negatives and making you feel hopeless. He hated the words he said to you.
You forgave him, you always did.
You weren’t going to lose hope because he was going to come back safe and sound. This was the man you wanted to be with. Not Charlie, not anyone. Bucky was the only one for you. He made you feel alive when no one else did.
“You’ll be Mrs. Barnes, sweetheart,” he assured you as he held onto you, closing his eyes as he rested his head on top of your own. “I swear that I’ll make it home to you.”
You walked into Central Park, letting your feet carry you wherever they wanted. The coat you wore was snug around you to keep you warm. There was a faint smell of Bucky’s cologne, and you only wore the coat when you needed comforting, so you didn’t risk having to wash it. That was the only thing you had left that still smelled like him and you tried to preserve it as much as you could.
No one was in the park from what you could tell. It was too cold from the snow and icy wind. You didn’t mind as long as you got away from your husband. He would cool down, you knew that. He would apologize because he couldn’t risk the humiliation of his wife leaving him while he was still in office. Honestly, you could care less if your reputation became sour.
Your life now was the life you didn’t want. You wanted a life with the man you were supposed to marry. He was supposed to come home to marry you and give you children. Feeling the hot tears pricking at your eyes, you lifted your cold hand up to wipe the tears. It’s been a year. Only a year, and you selfishly married a man you didn’t really love because you were afraid of being lonely.
Bucky would want you to be happy and knowing that you weren’t would have him rolling in his grave.
You sighed as you walked forward, but soon felt your shoe slip on the ice. A yelp escaped your lips and you were ready to fall to the ground, your eyes shutting in prep. What shocked you was a pair of arms that caught you and your heart skipped as you opened your eyes in surprise when you felt the familiarity. Your eyes widened in shock as you looked into the eyes of your savior, feeling your heart beat faster and your stomach to drop.
“James?”
He smiled at you and that was when you cried as you clung onto him. His gaze softened as he brought you to your feet, wrapping his arms around you. You thought he was gone, but here he was. It wasn’t a dream because you could feel him, you could smell him, and hear his heart beating. This was Bucky. You laughed because you were happy as you clung onto him, joyous that he was in front of you.
“You’re here,” you mumbled, your voice muffled by his chest because your face was buried into it.
"I told you that I would make it home to you, sweetheart,” you heard him say. You had tear stained cheeks and red eyes, but he wasn’t going to care. You looked up at him, feeling your heart become overwhelmed when he looked into your eyes. “Hello, gorgeous,” he said, and you saw his own eyes cloud with tears. He was happy, and you could tell that he hadn’t been in such a long time.
“Where have you been, Buck?” you asked as he placed his hand on your cheek, the warmth radiating from it. His thumb stroked your skin as he looked at you lovingly.
“I have a lot to tell you, but right now I just want to kiss you, doll,” he told you, in which you gave a nod in response. He leaned down to capture your lips with his and you immediately melted into it, feeling the emotions of love and longing poured into it. Five years have gone, but you felt the same feelings for him. He belonged here in your arms, no matter how long time passed.
