Any of yall have opinions on cars? I'm looking at a Kia Niro rn debating if I like that lmao, the other I'm looking at is a Hyundai Tucson, but I'm also open to suggestions.

Basically I'm looking at hybrid SUVs/crossovers rn, seems like the msrps for both are similar, the Kia maybe gets better mileage, but the Hyundai would feel a bit more luxe and is a bit more spacious? Tho I did find a used 2019 Kia Niro for ~$20k lmao, and like, compared to ~$33k for new, like, maybe that's not bad...

I’m having the worst day. I was supposed to buy a new (used) car and I know the lady selling it and she told me it was “like a 2016” and I go sit in it and it’s literally a 2007. I was like “nancy this is not a 2016.” And she was like “but the mileage is so low, I hardly ever drove it.” Im like Nancy there’s no way to hook my phone up to the fucking speakers!! What would you say is a great starting car for someone who just got their license

toyota corolla, hands down. you really can’t go wrong with a corolla, cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, forgiving, reliable. even the “bad” years of corolla are leagues ahead of most of the rest of what’s out there

the same honestly applies to the toyota camry, honda civic, and honda accord. if you just need a basic point to point first car that’s what you should keep an eye out for

if you need something with more space, check out honda crvs and toyota rav4s. toyota tacomas, chevy s10s, and ford f150s are good if you need a truck. if you want something sporty get a mazda miata, acura integra/rsx, or maybe a toyota celica

i’m basing all this on how cheap they are, how cheap they are to maintain, how easy they are to get parts for, and how reliable they are. im also based in the US so that’s the market im familiar with. obviously individuals of any of these models might have issues, a car is only as reliable as it’s been well maintained, but all the above generally can take enough abuse to where even slightly neglected ones can still go for really high mileage

when in doubt though, toyota will rarely let you down, especially their econoboxes. corolla, tercel, echo, yaris, all great little cars that’ll go forever and cost next to nothing

as someone in the auto industry, i dont "like" any manufacturer, it really boils down to "whats the least shitty." and without a doubt, german cars have the most undeserved reputation. whenever someone says "german engineering" unironically, thats someone who has both absolutely fallen for the PR founded on european prestige & R&D to solve problems that didnt exist, and has never turned a wrench on one. VW is absolutely an inferior product, but somehow they command premium prices. a rav4 or crv is in the same price ballpark as a tiguan, and a camry or accord is similarly equivalent to a jetta - ask yourself when was the last time you saw the VW entry puttering around at a similar age & mileage. I see toyotas and hondas regularly exceeding a decade and 150k, funny how the german equivalent is a rarity, particularly in the winter rust zone.

if you know someone whos selling a passat and you need wheels, it would behoove you to rideshare while you wait for a corolla or civic to come along.

If budget isn't a problem purchasing a van that is ready for life is, of course an easy task. Many companies now provide vans designed for endless road-tripping. But they aren't cheap. Even if they are used, for instance the popular Mercedes Sprinter will run you up to $35,000. Buy new and the sky is the limit.

We're not talking about the pre-made overlanders. Instead, I'm writing to the DIYers out there Many of them are probably working with the confines of a budget. If that's you, then let's get rolling.

Size and shape

The first thing you should consider when attempting to construct a home on wheels is how much area you'll be working with. The more room you have, the more space you'll have. On the other hand If you're living too large, you'll end up spending every penny for gas to transport the huge rig around.

It is important to strike the right equilibrium between how much space you can fit in and how little. While you might want the spacious panel van, you won't need to drive 14 miles per gallon for your car. A hatchback could be too small for long trips than weekenders, so you will need something with more elbow room.

I meant to make a more detailed post explaining what has gone on BUT I have just had shit keep happening to me time after time.

To put it simply: I have not had the time or ability to write ACW this month.

Have I given up on it? Forgotten it? Been pushing it off? Ignoring it?

No. I’ve been terribly busy and stressed in the process of trying to replace my car. Which has single-handedly been one of the worst experiences I’ve ever gone through.

Sounds dramatic right? No.

I have been:

Treated horribly bc I’m trying to buy a lower-priced used car outright instead of financing on any and I’ve had dealers tell me “I don’t care about those” and hang up on me

I had to pull money out of my college fund to even get a majority of my car budget and that was like pulling teeth

I was trying to save every penny I could of money I earned afterward so I was trying to spend NOTHING while literally picking pennies off the ground

I spent an entire day just rolling my own change to help my budget

I have gone to car lots trying to find a car I discovered online that is listed to be there only to find out it’s sold or even in another state

^ that happened to me 3 times

Some lots left listings on hella good car deals to lure people in

I found out I couldn’t finance a car bc I have no credit history but lord did they try for me to do so

And the biggest issue is that since I am a woman, I faced SO MUCH SHIT from dealers thinking I was an idiot or waisting their time.

One dealer literally lost his shit after I declined a sale because:

He was trying to finance me on a car worth 10k. From taxes and other fees and interest, and extra 6k was added to the car’s price. My car payment was gonna be almost $400/month and with having to get the insurance required for a car on lean I wouldn’t be able to spend any of my money on anything but the car for a year and he thought this was okay.

He was so sneaky he tried to get me to “drive the car home” to show my mom once she got off work. “All you gotta do is buy insurance and she can see it! And I’ll get you dealer tags!” THAT IS SELLING ME THE CAR. NO.

Once the deal fell through bc I refused to do anything but tell him we were done, he immediately changed with how he was acting and says “this is bullshit,” and proceeded to go fucking nuclear.

Said my parents didn’t love me bc they were going to buy a used car for me with no warranty and high mileage and I was gonna get screwed over even more than I already was without having a car.

He called my parents idiots for not co-signing and “I prayed to god for this deal and they won’t let you have it” — and overall he mostly zeroed in my mom, who bought two cars from them, saying she was a “fool” and “I couldn’t even talk to her for doing this to you.”

Said my parents didn’t love me and “you can’t do this to your daughters. Sons you can put in shitty used cars with high mileage, but your daughter? To have it break down on the side of the road? Haven’t they read the news? Don’t they know what happens to women?”

Complained that we were going to make him look like an idiot bc he reworked this car deal for me 4-5 times and now he’s gonna have to explain to his boss I said no and get him “in trouble” and that he might lose his job bc I’m not buying this car.

Needless to say I’ve been stressed as fuck this month.

And, a few days ago, I bought a car.

But it isn’t working out.

There was a crack in the windshield the dealer said they would replace. And this isn’t a sketchy side-of-the-road dealer, this is a franchised Ford dealership.

Well, the day after I bought my car (a green 2000 Honda CRV that needs some cosmetic love), I was told it would be fixed and they would call me to pick it up.

They didn’t do so. Either with calling me or fixing the windshield.

I called them 3 times, right after I got off from work at about 4, and then, about an hour before they were set to close.

I got a call back after leaving messages asking how my car was and if it was ready for pick up to come 10min before the dealer shut its doors for the night to get it.

So I show up and it’s raining and at night, so I don’t immediately see the crack is still there until I get home.

Thankfully I live right down the road, so I still had enough time to call them back and say: “wtf? This was supposed to be fixed? Y’all said it would be?”

The gentleman on the phone tells me: “Bring the car in tomorrow morning. We will get you a loan vehicle while we fix it and you should get it back same day. What time would you be coming in?”

I tell him about 9am or a little past, and he says he will make a note of it.

Come morning, I make sure to take pics of the windshield.

I take it, find out the guy to fix it isn’t even in till Monday, and since it’s a 7-8in crack it’s not safe to drive around with (the salesman even told me for it to be on the lot it had to be fixed).

So now o have a loaner car after getting to complain to the sales manager and I broke down crying bc I havent had my car for even 48hrs and they’re already having to take it back and keep it for several days longer.

The lady who does car loaning for people like me felt so bad she prayed for me before I left and texted me personally about my car bc i discovered they cleaned the brake pedal and it was worn down to expose metal— not a common thing you see on a car with only 97k miles.

Both she and I did research on the vehicle to make sure the odometer wasn’t rolled back (something highly illegal and fraudulent).

So I’m out of a car at least until Monday, but it just depends on how this all goes down.

Until then I have a 2019 Ford Edge and it’s nicer than anything I’ve ever been in but still.

So yeah. I haven’t brushed off ACW.

I literally have just been having the worst luck and time and this has taken priority over writing.

Not that I’m shitting on you anon, but this is what’s happening and this is why there won’t be an update this month.

I’m sorry, but it’s just how this has played out for me and everything else.

Minimal Vehicles

If public transportation were a thing in our city, we wouldn’t own a car.  As it is, we don’t even have a bus stop or bicycle lanes.  So, we own a car.  Below are some things we do to minimize the expense and hassle of owning one.  

Buy used:  New cars are for suckers.  Shop carefully and buy a decent used car.  Ours is a 1998 Honda CRV.  We resisted getting an SUV, but it’s a small one and it’s been great for hauling our dogs to the vet and park.  It cost about $4000.  Pay cash if you can.  We couldn’t, but we did put down a large down payment.

Pay it off ASAP: Every windfall, every bonus, every tax return should go to your vehicle.  If you don’t have an emergency fund, go for that first, but if you do paying down your car loan is a priority.  Getting your car paid off and driving for free is a great feeling!

Minimal Insurance:  Depending on the age and value of your car, you may want to keep full coverage even after it’s paid off.  For our situation, it would be ridiculous to have full coverage on a 20 year old vehicle.  We have the minimum allowed for our state plus roadside assistance and it costs us $39 a month.

Maintain it: Keep your oil changed.  Doing it yourself is fantastic, but if you’re not confident enough then have it done on schedule.  If your car is old, pay extra for the high mileage stuff.  Have your battery tested in the fall.  Once a month take a look at your tires, check your fluids, and vacuum the inside.  Wash and wax periodically, if you care.  We don’t.  

Drive it forever:  You don’t need a new vehicle until the cost of maintenance exceeds the cost of a new used vehicle.  For most vehicles that is a super long time.  If your car is driving fine and the air, heat and radio work, you don’t need a new car.  A little paint peeling? Boo hoo.  Wish you could keep up with the Joneses?  Cry us a river.  If it gets you where you’re going reliably you need to keep driving it.  Our previous car was a 1993 Dodge Shadow and we drove it until it wouldn’t go anymore, and then we drove it some more.  

Keep an Emergency Kit:  You should have enough stuff to change a tire and jump your vehicle off if needed.  Some tools, a flashlight, one of those window-breaky-seatblet-cutty things, and first aid supplies.  We also keep a Work Convenience Kit in our car, with some OTC meds, a change of scrubs/socks/shoes, and a little cash in case we forget our lunch.  Also, air freshener.

Each day when you arrive home take any trash into the house and throw it away, so it doesn’t pile up.  Driving to work or school in a sea of old fast food wrappers is not a great way to start your day.  Appreciate your vehicle.  It gets you places.  It saves you from walking.  You don’t need a fancy new one every two years like our weird aunt.
