Just bought a CRV 2023 Hybrid. First impressions are generally pretty good. Most of the basic stuff (interior design, quality, comfort, room) are consistent with prior year models. Its what is expected from Honda. A couple of key observations so far.

Fuel milage of the Hybrid compared to our previous 2019 CRV is about 12% better in city driving. Quite often I can be driving at 60kph entirely on the battery. Highway driving is marginally better with the hybrid (less than 1% improvement). As per the salesman, hybrids only improve city driving not highway driving. If the engine is running, the hybrid really doesnt help for fuel efficiency.

Two unexpected things about the hybrid. When starting a cold engine, the car will start and run the engine until it is warmed up. When turning on the interior heat, the engine will turn on and run until the heat is turned off. I did not expect this behaviour at all; I expected the “traditional” warm up the engine / warm up the interior would be handled through the hybrid battery not the old school “run the engine” approach. In cold climates, this will significantly reduce the benefit of using a hybrid.

Also; I was informed that the warranty on the engine is void if the engine block cracks from being left in the cold (-38C) without a block heater. This can and does happen (the engine block of my Mazda B2000 cracked at -25C). So I was curious: does the battery power the block heater? Nope. Block heater is an optional “plug it in when parked” accessory. Also noticed that after being parked, the battery is often low; this makes sense because the last part of the drive is often done on battery at low speed, which will drain the battery.

For future revisions of hybrid models, I would like to see the engine block heater be powered via the battery (with a pre-start warm up... like a diesel glow plug), I would like to see the heat/ac be powered via the battery, and I would like to see a 120V/15A external trickle charger for the battery (eg use the widely deployed block heater plug ins).

The trickle charger will “top up” the battery when parked. Using the battery for the block heater will help avoid the “I didnt know I needed to plug it in in extreme cold”. Using the battery for heating will migrate yet another system from being dependent on a running engine.

Generally happy with the Hybrid CRV, just a few design aspects that I expected to be done differently.
