All 4runners have been integrated in japan at toyota's plant in tahara, aichi, or at the hino motors (a toyota subsidiary) plant in hamura. The 4runner was available in at number 5 in a 2019 research study by iseecars. Com ranking the longest-lasting vehicles in the us. All very first generation 4runners had two doors and were indistinguishable from the pickups from the dashboard forward. Read what other owners consider the 2020 Toyota 4Runner. Shoppers also think about. Toyota's old-school 4runner hasn't changed a lot for many years, but its competitors have. Vehicles such as the nissan pathfinder, when an authentic suv ready to take on gnarly terrain, have actually given that morphed into crossovers with less off-road capability. The 2020 toyota 4runner keeps its status as a tough, off-road prepared suv that uses a more civilized option to vehicles like the jeep wrangler, particularly when discovered in trd off-road or trd pro trims. It's likewise a fairly comfy daily driver that can seat up to 7 passengers throughout 3 rows, and it can tow approximately 5,000 pounds. Toyota 4Runner vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee The same can be stated, to varying degrees, of models like the ford explorer and chevrolet blazer. That leaves just 2 primary rivals: the jeep grand cherokee and jeep wrangler unlimited. Offered the shift in buyers' preferences, its shrinking segment, and its antiquated style, one would presume the 4runner's best days were in the past. Get the base 4runner in gray, beat the hell out of it and keep it for 20-plus years. That's what i suggest. Your other options are the jeep grand cherokee ($32,150), which is even more refined and outsells 4runner by a nation mile. Toyota 4Runner vs. Toyota Highlander 2020 toyota 4runner trd pro: 3 things that make it a pro in the city. 10 most significant news stories of the week: 2021 genesis gv80, gmc yukon do it. 2020 chicago auto show: everything you missed out on. 2021 toyota highlander xse and unique 4runner, tacoma tundra identify themselves. While more recent midsize trucks are much smoother on the road, the 4runner is stiff and bouncy, jouncing along the highway. If you prepare to use your brand-new suv for travelling, something like the brand-new toyota highlander or smaller rav4 are most likely a much better bet. Toyota 4Runner vs. Toyota Tacoma But, that's exactly for how long it's been considering that toyota introduced the latest version of its venerable midsize suv. The fifth-generation 4runner debuted for the 2010 model year, using rather tighter interior accommodations compared to its predecessor and sharing various bits and pieces with the tacoma pickup an fj cruiser suv. Our experts' favorite 4Runner safety features: Rear spoiler, mp3 player, privacy glass, keyless entry, child safety locks. Toyota limited with magnetic gray metallic outside and black interior features a v6 cylinder engine with 270 hp at 5600 rpm *. Choice packagesrunning boards. Serviced here, locally owned and traded here!experts conclude'the 4runner's v6 produces a healthy 270 horsepower, ideal when you need to pass slower traffic or tow heavy loads. What do individuals consider the 2020 Toyota 4Runner? The 2018 toyota 4runner is a body-on-frame sport energy, meaning it's truck-based instead of car-based as would be a crossover-suv. This indicates that the 4runner might not be for everyone, but it does fit a specific market and segment of needs. The 2018 4runner needs to be thought of as a pickup truck with more seating capable of bring a fair variety of people and pulling a fair amount of trailer and cargo. As such, the japanese maker didn't change much of anything on the 2013 toyota 4runner. Many people would neglect this midsize suv at first glance, however it does have some extremely rugged and useful features that might attract buyers searching for recognized dependability. What's an excellent price for a New 2020 Toyota 4Runner? Different package updates followed in 2018, and after that a black-accented nightshade special edition showed up for the 2019 model year. Cargurus tested the 2019 4runner, eventually recommending the sr5 premium 4wd model based on its available features and sub-$40,000 starting price. As the toyota 4runner entered the 2020 model year, it went through a host of considerable upgrades, the least of which was the introduction of a venture trim level accented by distinct wheels and a standard roofing system rack. I finally get the love for the toyota 4runner. I almost got it in the past, now that i have actually spent a week in one, i'm feeling a connection to the loud, unrefined, semi-slow, old suv. Beginning with the excellent, the 4runner's looks are simply traditional and identifiable. Should I lease or buy a 2020 Toyota 4Runner? Such has been the appeal of the toyota 4runner, a rear-wheel-drive (rwd) or 4-wheel-drive (4wd) model that has actually filled that function since it was initially introduced in the mid-1980s. Now, as one of the couple of midsize suvs still on the marketplace, the up-to-7-passenger 4runner continues to bring in buyers who want to venture far off the beaten course, or a minimum of would like to know their vehicle can do so at a moment's notice. A new, sixth-generation 4runner is stated to be in development but, at the time of this writing, no details have actually been launched. 2003-2009 toyota 4runner: 4th generation. Aside from pickup trucks and some very popular cars, couple of vehicle nameplates have been around regularly for more than thirty years. Up to $500 refund on a new toyota 4runner. 2023 Toyota RAV4 update revealed for Japan Australia to follow
The Toyota RAV4 has received another update in Japan, ahead of Australian arrivals before the end of this year. 0 View 8 images The updated 2023 Toyota RAV4 has been revealed for Japan, ahead of Australian showrooms arrivals due by the end of 2022. After a handful of images of the updated 2023 RAV4 were published in Europe, it’s Toyota Japan’s turn to reveal elements of the updated model, which introduces a number of technology and safety updates to keep it fresh among newer rivals. Toyota dealers in Australia have been advised to expect price rises of $1500 to $3000, depending on the model – in addition to an inflation-related price rise of $1500 across all RAV4 variants from 1 January 2023. As reported by Drive previously, from 16 May 2022 Toyota dealers began advising customers the final price of their vehicle was subject to change due to model-year upgrades or increased manufacturing costs – and they are entitled to a refund of their deposit if they don’t agree with the new prices, or don’t want to wait. View 8 images View 8 images PreviousNext With wait times out to 18 months on some RAV4 variants, vehicles ordered today may not be the car that eventually arrives – passing through one or possibly two model-year upgrades, bringing with them more features which command a higher list price. As previously reported by Drive, all models gain new infotainment software, with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a smarter cloud-based satellite navigation system, and a ‘Hey Toyota’ voice assistant. It’s set to run on an 8.0-inch touchscreen in the entry-level GX and GXL models in Australia, while the XSE, Cruiser and Edge locally – or high-end models in Japan – are slated to adopt a new 10.5-inch touchscreen. View 8 images View 8 images PreviousNext There’s a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster – set to feature on Australian XSE, Cruiser and Edge variants – while the 7.0-inch instrument display previously in these models is slated to be added to the GX and GXL (replacing a 4.2-inch screen). Advanced safety technology improvements outlined by Toyota Japan include a revised autonomous emergency braking system capable of braking for oncoming vehicles in an intersection, or pedestrians crossing a side street the car is turning into. Japanese models also add a Nanoe-X air filtration system and a “recording function” for the available digital rear-view mirror as new for 2023 – but these aren’t believed to be on the cards for Australia for the time being. Toyota dealers have been advised of further upgrades to Australian RAV4s not listed in the Japanese announcement, including an emergency steer assist safety feature, and support for the Toyota Connected Services suite of connected-car features, powered by a smartphone app. USB-C ports are slated to replace USB-A sockets across the range in Australia, while the flagship Edge is set to gain upgraded LED projector headlights. The 2023 Toyota RAV4 is due in Australian showrooms before the end of this year. Alex Misoyannis has been writing about cars since 2017, when he started his own website, Redline. Five Things You Thought You Knew About Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles (EVs) are growing in popularity in the United States and throughout the world, as battery range increases, charging infrastructure expands and automakers unveil a growing variety of car and light truck models. According to the International Energy Association, the number of new EV car registrations nearly doubled over one year in 2018, with China leading the way, followed by Europe and then the U.S.  China, especially, is taking an aggressive approach to EV manufacturing, producing 1.2 million EVs in 2019, compared to 325,000 in the U.S.
Tumblr media
Is your idea of an electric car stuck in 2010? The EV world has changed a lot in the past decade, so here’s a look at five things you thought you understood about EVs, and might be surprised to learn you have wrong:
1)      I thought electric cars are too expensive.
It’s true that most all-electric cars have a base sticker price between $30,000 and $40,000, comparable to luxury performance vehicles like an Audi A4 or a BMW 330i. That price may be reduced by federal, state, and local tax credits or other incentives, which can shave thousands from the final price tag (and help cover the cost of installing home recharging stations). Go beyond the purchase price and you’ll find that electric vehicles are less expensive than gas-powered cars, according to research by Consumer Reports. CR says that once all costs of ownership are considered—including such factors as purchase price, fueling costs, maintenance, and resale—owning an electric vehicle will save the typical driver $6,000 to $10,000 over the life of the vehicle, compared to a comparable gas-powered model.
2)      I thought EVs are too small. I need something that can haul cargo.
Need a pickup truck? They’re on the way. According to Car & Driver, several electric pickup models will be rolling off assembly lines in the coming months, from well-established automakers like Ford and Chevrolet as well as some promising new startups like Rivian. And we’re talking about some workhorse vehicles—Ford says the electric version of its popular F-150 pickup will be the most powerful F-150 ever, with more than 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.
3)      I thought electric vehicles use so much energy to produce, that they’re not actually better for the climate.
It’s true that manufacturing an EV can use more energy than a conventional car, largely due to the manufacture of lithium ion batteries. More than a third of the carbon pollution created by an EV over its lifetime does come from its manufacture. However, if you look at the entire life cycle of the vehicle, an electric car ultimately creates fewer emissions than its gas-powered counterpart. A recent analysis (subscription required) in the Wall Street Journal compared the life cycle of a Tesla Model 3 to a Toyota Rav 4. Although more emissions are produced by manufacturing the Tesla, by 20,600 miles (just getting broken in) greenhouse gas emissions from building and driving the two cars are roughly the same. By the time the two odometers have clocked 100,000 miles, lifetime emissions of the RAV4 are 77 percent more than the Model 3. Those numbers will only continue to improve as more electricity sources switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy (which has other benefits for EVs—see #4 below). In any event, electric cars don’t have tailpipes and don’t spew the smog-forming pollution that make life miserable in congested cities and which is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.
4)      I thought EVs are no better for the environment because the electricity used to run them comes from fossil fuels.
The climate change emissions created by driving on electricity depend on where you live (see map) and your electricity source, but on average, an EV driving on electricity in the U.S. today produces emissions equivalent to a conventional gasoline car that gets 80 miles per gallon—which is far better mileage than any gasoline-powered car available. That’s based on a 2018 study by the Union of Concerned Scientists. As the U.S. continues to increase generation of clean electricity, electric vehicles become an even cleaner option. A country serious about fighting climate change will work diligently to reduce carbon emissions from both cars and power plants, because transportation and electricity production are the two greatest sources of greenhouse gas, and we need to be addressing both.
5)      I thought there are not enough EV charging stations available to make EVs a practical choice for consumers.
There’s no doubt—we need more infrastructure to keep our electric cars and trucks on the road when we have places to go. The US. Department of Energy reports more than 42,000 charging stations in the U.S. in 2019, providing nearly 103,000 connections.  The availability varies by state, but the numbers are rapidly increasing, in the U.S. and globally. According to the IEA, the number of charging points around the world was estimated to be approximately 5.2 million, an increase of 44 percent from the previous year. If you want to take a cross-country road trip in your electric vehicle, you can do it – and it gets easier every year. Companies that manage charging networks are making it a priority to create easy to use, fast charging stations across the country. The availability of charging stations is less important for drivers who mostly stay close to home. Most EV owners can charge their battery at home overnight, and as the editors of Car and Driver note, “Even the shortest-range EV can manage more than 7 hours of slogging through city traffic.”

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Review

Luckily for Toyota, the RAV4 saw a complete redesign in 2019, delivering…

The 13 eventual category winners will be selected from the list of 65 vehicles, which includes model derivatives from 24 brands represented in the South African market.
All vehicles available on the South African market on September 1, 2019, were eligible, not only new products that were launched during the past 12 months.
Compared with the 2018/19 Cars Awards, the executive sedan category has been replaced with one that caters for premium-positioned crossovers.
The former Hot Hatch category (now named Fun Hatch) encompasses more affordable contenders and the price caps for the Premium SUV and Performance Car segments have been raised, it said.
“It is important to note that we analyse market changes proactively and adapt the categories to be better aligned with the South African consumer,” said Cars.co.za consumer experience manager Hannes Oosthuizen.
“With no new contenders in the Executive Sedan category, as well as very poor sales in that segment, we saw it fit to create a new category (to reflect growth and interest in upmarket crossovers) instead.
“Meanwhile there have been no new launches in the traditional hot hatch category, but there has been activity at a lower price point, so we’ve created a new category called Fun Hatch.”
And given the rapidly rising prices of cars for sale in Johannesburg, Oosthuisen said that sticking to a R1-million barrier for Premium SUV and Performance Car categories is no longer practical.
Volkswagen lead the charge in 2019/2020 again.
Even though 24 brands’ vehicles feature in the list of 65, five marques have more than three semi-finalists in the running for category honours.
Volkswagen has the most representatives (8), followed by BMW (6) and Audi, which has 5, although the A1 Sportback 40TFSI S Line is notably a semi-finalist in two separate categories.
Ford (5) and Toyota (4) round out the major manufacturers.

Some of the best cars for snow driving available on BidGoDrive.com
Tumblr media
“Baby, It's Cold Outside ” plays (in the background) as you watch cars slide all over the ice and crash into each other, folks are skidding through red lights left and right, and everybody is ice skating in their cars, even when they don’t want to be. It’s finally snowing. You don’t have to be one of those people, but how? We can help!!
Tumblr media
Honda’s compact crossover, the CR-V, has been in production since 1995 and is currently in its fifth generation. CR-V stands for comfortable runabout vehicle, but it was termed as a compact recreational vehicle in a British car review that was then republished by Honda. With an optional third row of seats that can fit up to 7, the standard AWD version puts out 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque through a 1.5 liter turbocharged I4 engine. Older versions are available with a 2.4 liter, naturally aspirated engine that puts out 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The NHTSA gave the Honda CR-V 5/5 stars for its overall safety rating, so it’ll keep you and your family safe when you head through the snow with a ground clearance of 7.8 inches to avoid getting bogged down. You can get it as a hybrid in 2020, too.
Tumblr media
The Toyota RAV4 is arguably the aforementioned CR-V’s biggest competitor. Introduced in Japan and Europe in 1994 and in North America in 1996, the RAV4 started off putting out 119 horsepower. The 2019 gas-powered RAV4 now puts out 203 horsepower, while the hybrid version puts out 219. While both come standard with FWD, all trims have AWD available making them perfect for driving in the snow. 2019 AWD iterations have a new feature: Rear Drive Disconnect. That means that only the front wheels are powered when AWD isn’t necessary, improving fuel economy for models that are equipped with AWD. The 2019 Toyota RAV4, like the CR-V, got 5/5 stars for its safety rating as well, making it an excellent contender for mountain trips with the family, or just commuting to work when nobody else seems to be able to because of the snow with an impressive 8.4 inches of ground clearance.
Tumblr media
Subaru Outback is one of Subaru’s most reliable models, and now in its sixth generation as of 2020. The standard Boxer engine puts out 182 horsepower, 176 lb-ft of torque, and comes with Auto Start-Stop Technology for better fuel economy around town. Equipped with standard AWD and a ground clearance of 8.7 inches making it ideal for snow driving, the Subaru Outback also earned a 5/5 safety rating from the NHTSA. Spacious, comfortable, and with excellent off-road capabilities, you won’t get stuck anywhere in a Subaru Outback.
Tumblr media
It’s no surprise that Subaru holds two spots on this list, as they’re known for their sporty and outdoorsy nature. If you’re looking for something a little bit bigger than an Outback, Subaru’s crossover-SUV is a fantastic choice. Originally the XV Crosstrek, as of 2016 the Subaru Crosstrek has become its own entity. Every trim comes equipped with AWD, and the gas-fed iterations put out 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The Crosstrek is also available as a plug-in hybrid, which puts out 137 hp and 134 lb-ft of torque. All variations come with Active Torque Vectoring and Traction Control Systems for the best experience in the worst conditions. As with all the other vehicles on this list, the Crosstrek got a 5/5 star safety rating from the NHTSA, so you and your family will be taken care of during the winter months. Those 5 vehicles are our top picks for winter and snow driving. Be it to the mountain or just to work, you want to make sure you’re commuting safely. With top safety ratings and excellent capability in inclement weather, those cars are sure to make winter life much easier. If none of the vehicles on this list suit your requirements or style, we have lots of other options available. Happy holidays, be safe!

Renault launches new Koleos flagship SUV in SA
Renault has been missing a product in recent years to take the fight to SUV stalwarts such as the Toyota Rav4 and Nissan X-Trail. In 2019, it hopes to grab its share of the market with the local introduction of Renault next-generation Koleos.
Revealed to local media in Gauteng, the Koleos struck an imposing presence amid the High Veld rains on Valentine’s Day 2019.
First reveal
Renault is adamant that this new Koleos is by far one of its best SUVs yet and the French automaker pulled out all the stops in producing this new vehicle.
The Renault Koleos is yet another product from the Renault-Nissan alliance, as it shares much of its underpinnings with the Nissan X-Trail.
And the price is one of the Koleos' biggest attractions, check out the Koleos price at Group 1 Renault.
Three models are on offer - the Expression, the Dynamique 4x4 and the Dynamique 4x2 costs.
Not only is this substantially lower than the equivalent X-Trail and Rav4 models, but the package is pretty comprehensive, too.
Spacious interior
Built-in Busan, Korea, the Koleos boasts with one of the biggest cabins in its segment; supported by a size that virtually towers over its rivals.
In terms of size, the Koleos is 1843mm wide and 4673mm long; that results in a cabin that offers passengers ample of space. This is especially made evident by the fact that legroom for rear passengers sits at an impressive 289mm.
This also boasts well for loading space, seeing that the boot, according to Renault, measures in 464 litres, with the second row of seats folded up.
Remove the boot cover and that space increases to just over 700 litres. In addition to the latter, total cargo space increases to 1795 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
Other storage spaces throughout the cabin combine for a total of 35 litres; this includes the glovebox, storage bins, and cup holders.
There’s also a full-size 17" spare wheel hidden in the boot.
Fresh design
The Koleos has a very striking design about it and if one puts the SUV alongside its concept sketches, then Renault retained almost every detail of the initial image.
The grille sees Renault’s new design ethos incorporated into it and the two top diagonal running bars connect with the headlights. These are daytime running lights and a set of LEDs form a C-shape just below it.
Fog lights are incorporated as standard into the front bumper and a silver-coloured mudguard brings the package together. A ground clearance of 210mm makes the Koleos look purposeful in its stance and a number of alloy wheels can be specified with the SUV.
At the rear, the fog lights run towards the badge on the boot lid and do a pair of exhausts outlets give a feeling of power.
However, the exhausts are only there to create a sense of sportiness. A choice of six body colours is on offer.
Behind the wheel
The Koleos shares much of its architecture and engineering bits with the Nissan X-Trail and does the two SUVs make use of the same engine and gearbox.
Upfront, the Koleos is powered by a 2.5-litre petrol engine that delivers 126kW and 233Nm. Depending on the model, as alluded to earlier, power can be sent to the front wheels or all four.
On the drive, the rainy weather ensured that the Koleos Dynamique 4x4 we drove is well and truly put through its paces.
It was, perhaps, an ideal scenario to see how the SUV stacks up against the relentless rain that turned the High Veld into a bed of aquaplaning. Setting off in 2WD, the Koleos only pulled through its front wheels.
With traction control engaged, the SUV coped well with the slippery conditions while traversing the bumpy terrain. Once on the tar, one could stamp your authority on the accelerator through the CVT gearbox wasn't as quick to quick to react to throttle inputs.
Though Renault says that they improved the workings of this gearbox for better performance, the true effect of the changes can really be felt when cruising along at a leisurely pace. But once the throttle is planted, not so much.
Even overtaking is a bit of mission, as the naturally-aspirated engine has to work for the power to kick in. The Koleos has no qualms about keeping its speed when on the go, but getting up to speed and with no turbo to aid the engine, it verges on being frustrating. But not quite yet.
Other driving modes include Auto and 4WD. In Auto, the vehicle will send power to the front wheels, but when it senses slippage on the back wheels will send the required amount of torque to the rear axle.
4WD only works up to 40km/h and will distribute power evenly (50/50) between the two axles. The switch to activate these modes sits rather uncomfortably above the driver’s right knee.
Technology and features
Renault endowed the Koleos with a raft of technologies and features to warrant its consideration. On all models, there’s an 8.7" touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard.
This tablet-like device allows for swiping and touching capabilities, but the screen’s response to your touch could have been a bit more sensitive.
From this screen users can operate all media devices, as well as satellite navigation; the latter is available in both 2D and 3D.
To curb users from using their cell phones while driving, the system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also a screen mirror option.
AUX functionality and a number of USB ports can be found throughout the cabin, but four of these USB ports are available to rear passengers - two for charging your phone.
Voice command functionality is also standard to the package and the front seats can be adjusted electronically.
In addition, users can choose the ambient lighting of the cabin and is an array of colour options available.
Oh, and another cool feature is that the cup holders can be either cooled or heated; depending on the type of drink you have stowed.
Final thoughts
Compared to its closest rivals, the Renault Koleos is a breath of fresh air into this segment. Though the Rav4 is dominating it, the Koleos should give the segment leader a run for its money.
In terms of the overall package and price. For Renault to bring the range in at an attractive price, is a mighty fine feat.
It remains to be seen whether or not the new Koleos will make an impact on its segment, but initial impressions are that both prospective buyers and the Toyota Rav4 should take note of the new kid on the block.
The Koleos is backed by Renault’s five-year or 150 000km mechanical warranty, plus a five-year or 90 000km service plan and a six-year anti-corrosion warranty. Service intervals are every 15 000km or twelve months; whichever comes first.

The Best 4×4 SUVs You Can Buy Today
With America’s appetite for crossovers and SUVs veering off the top of the charts, it’s getting harder and harder to find a “real” off-road-capable 4×4 SUV. Many, but not all, new SUVs have some ability to send the engine’s power to all four wheels, but that doesn’t mean they have true 4×4 or four-wheel-drive (4WD) capability. Technical director Frank Markus explains the difference between all-wheel drive (AWD) and 4WD here. Meanwhile, here are the best 4×4 SUVs you can buy today.
2021 Ford Bronco
Well, you can’t exactly buy one today, but the highly anticipated Ford Bronco 4×4 SUV is scheduled to return late this year. What we know: It’s expected to be a body-on-frame challenge to the Jeep Wrangler and to be an immensely capable off-roader. Based on the next-generation Ford Ranger midsize pickup, we anticipate the 2021 Ford Bronco to come standard with four-wheel drive and feature a removable roof and detachable doors. Like its predecessors, the 2021 Ford Bronco will be offered in two- and four-door configurations. Like the Ford Ranger, the Bronco will likely come standard with the EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo-four. In that pickup, the engine makes 270 hp and a potent 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s believed that Ford’s 2.7- or 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6s will be offered as options. A plug-in hybrid is also expected to join the Bronco line. The only transmission available will likely be the 10-speed automatic found in the Ford F-150 and Ranger. Everything old is new again.
2020 Jeep Cherokee
In the compact 4×4 SUV range, there really isn’t much competition for the Jeep Cherokee in terms of off-road chops. The only vehicle in its segment to offer proper 4WD (though AWD is available, too), the 2020 model received no major updates after a comprehensive set of improvements in 2019. This means the five-passenger SUV continues to straddle the entry-level people mover and rough-and-tumble off-road segments, with a variety of trim levels intended to satisfy a wide range of buyers. The most off-road-capable trim remains the Trailhawk 4×4.
The Trailhawk comes standard with a 271-hp/239-lb-ft 3.2-liter V-6; a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder good for 270 hp (and a substantial 56-lb-ft torque advantage) is optional. A nine-speed automatic transmission is standard. It also comes with a mechanical locking rear differential and various off-road drive modes for added traction and performance. In a rigorous comparison against the off-road-oriented Toyota RAV4 Adventure AWD, we came away impressed by the go-anywhere capabilities of the Cherokee Trailhawk, as it comfortably dispatched a series of mud, rock, and clay off-road obstacles. Off-road on a budget? This is your rig.
2020 Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Wrangler was probably the first make and model that popped into your head when you thought 4×4 SUVs, and for good reason. Our 2019 SUV of the Year was among the best-selling 4WD SUVs last year. The Wrangler is a legend. Our pick for pure off-roading, however, is the Rubicon 4×4, available in either two- or four-door configurations with electronically locking front and rear differentials, a two-speed (high/low) transfer case, and a front anti-roll bar disconnect feature. A standard 285-hp/260-lb-ft 3.6-liter V-6 can be paired with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 270-hp/295-lb-ft 2.0L turbocharged I-4 is available. A 260-hp/442-lb-ft turbodiesel V-6 engine makes its debut for 2020 (automatic transmission only), and an eTorque mild hybrid is now available with the I-4 or V-6 on Sahara Unlimited. New Willys Edition, Freedom Edition, and Black and Tan packages now join the options list. Like the 2020 Porsche 911, remastering a master is a tightrope act, but Jeep has walked a mile—and then some—for its loyal customers with mile-high expectations.
2020 Land Rover Defender
Like the Ford Bronco, the release of the Land Rover Defender has been highly anticipated. Features editor Christian Seabaugh drove several through western Africa and came away saying, “The Defender expertly balances modern construction, technology, and comfort with the off-road capability, performance, and payload that hardcore rock crawlers and overlanders demand.” He continued, “A P300-badged 296-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 is standard for the U.S. market; a P400-badged mild hybrid with a 3.0-liter turbocharged I-6 and an electric supercharger is optional. The hybrid powertrain makes a healthy 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. All Defender powertrains are paired with an eight-speed automatic and permanent four-wheel drive. The high-output 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 making 236 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque in the D240 models are not headed to America.” The U.S. will, at least, get a plug-in hybrid version of the Defender in the near future. Like both the Bronco and the Wrangler, the Defender is available in two-door (90) and four-door (110) forms.
2020 Land Rover Discovery
Redesigned for the 2017 model year, the Land Rover Discovery’s off-road prowess dates back to its 1989 introduction. Many might remember the iconic yellow Camel Trophy competitive and support vehicles. Today, the five- or seven-passenger 4×4 SUV is offered with either a 335-hp/332-lb-ft supercharged V-6 or a 254-hp/443-lb-ft turbodiesel V-6. Regardless, both are paired with an eight-speed automatic. The turbodiesel is a real stump-puller, but it runs out of breath on the highway. For serious off-roading, we recommend the HSE Luxury trim that features adjustable air suspension and a two-speed (high/low range) transfer case that gives it proper four-wheel drive. The selectable auto terrain response automatically adjusts to the terrain, recognizing, for instance, deep sand and adapting the driveline to best traverse it. Off-road, the Discovery has few peers.
2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Speaking of icons, the ever-boxy Mercedes-Benz G-Class (née Geländewagen) may be seen more often chugging down Rodeo Drive, but its original and true mission of pounding the terrain into submission remains intact. As it was from the beginning, the recently redesigned/re-engineered G-Wagen is built in Graz, Austria, by what is now Magna-Steyr. It is offered with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine in two forms of power: 416 hp/450 lb-ft of torque in the G 550, and a whopping 577 hp/627 lb-ft in the G 63. All that power is routed through a nine-speed automatic with a two-speed transfer case and electronic locking front, center, and rear differentials. An electronic adaptive suspension system designed to improve the G-Class’ performance both on- and off-road is optional on the G 550 and standard on the G 63. As Seabaugh wrote in a thorough First Drive, “It’s always daunting, reinventing an icon. But Mercedes nailed it.”
2020 Toyota 4Runner
Recently updated infotainment and safety systems have brought the five-generations-mature Toyota 4Runner into modern times, but it’s what hasn’t changed that makes it a terrific off-road companion, especially in either TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro trim. The former is equipped with an electronically controlled locking rear differential, a crawl control feature, and the Multi-Terrain Select set of off-road driving modes. The latter further adds Fox shocks with remote rear reservoirs, unique front springs, a skidplate, and 17-inch wheels. The rugged body-on-frame midsize 4×4 SUV is powered by a 4.0-liter V-6 making 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is the only available gearbox. Despite its off-road cred, it’s also a reasonably comfortable daily driver that can seat up to seven passengers across three rows.
Toyota Land Cruiser
With a history going back nearly as far Jeep, the storied Toyota Land Cruiser carries decades of 4×4 SUV experience. Although it has morphed into a somewhat luxury-oriented SUV with room for up to eight people, it remains an old-school, body-on-frame, live-axle 4×4 that’s intended to take on tough terrain with a mechanically limited-slip center differential and two-speed transfer case. The Land Cruiser is powered by a (thirsty) 5.7-liter V-8 that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. The only transmission is an eight-speed automatic. Features of note are Toyota’s legendary Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which hydraulically adjusts the front and rear stabilizer bars, increasing wheel articulation and traction when the terrain is uneven. There’s also an array of cameras that provide front/side/rear views of the tricky or potentially damaging trail. Because of the Land Cruiser’s full-size dimensions, an off-road turn assist—when activated—applies brake pressure to the rear wheel on the inside of the turn. This creates a rolling pivot point, similar to how a tank turns. Want to get there, wherever there is, in comfort and style? The Land Cruiser’s got you covered.

Toyota’s first plug-in hybrid RAV4 piles on the power and fuel efficiency
Toyota gave its first plug-in hybrid RAV4 more than just a plug. It piled on the power as well.
The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime, which was unveiled this week at the LA Auto Show, will be achieve two seemingly conflicting goals. The vehicle will be its most fuel efficient and one of its most powerful.
This variant of the RAV4 will have an all-wheel drive, sport-tuned suspension. It has a tuned 2.5-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine and when combined with the electric motors will deliver 302 horsepower and be able to travel from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a projected 5.8 seconds. Toyota hasn’t announced a price yet, but expect it to be more expensive than the hybrid version of the RAV4, which starts at $28,100.
The 2021 Toyota Rav4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid, on the floor of the 2019 LA Auto Show.
That might seem slow compared to some of the pure electric sedans on the market. But it’s far zippier than previous models and marks a much needed improvement in the RAV4. The vehicle’s electric battery will provide an estimated 39 miles of range before kicking back to the gas-powered engine.
The RAV4 Prime has a manufacturer-estimated 90 combined MPGe. The 2021 model, will be available in the sportier SE and luxury-focused XSE trims, will hit the marketplace in summer 2020.
To understand the improvement, consider this. Toyota offered a 3.5-liter V6 in the 2006 to 2012 model years of the RAV4. And yet, despite having more cylinders and bigger displacement it only produced 269 horsepower and combined fuel economy rating of 21 miles per gallon.
The vehicle will also come standard with advanced driver assistance features, including pre-collision pedestrian detection, radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beam and road sign assistance.
As Toyota offers more electrified versions of its popular SUVs, the company is upping the warranty on its hybrid battery. The automaker said that beginning with the 2020 model year, its hybrid battery warranty will be increased from 8 years or 100,000 miles to 10 years from original date of first use, or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.

The 2020 Toyota Camry and 2021 Avalon are getting AWD When it comes to navigating winter in North America, many drivers prefer vehicles with AWD. Because safety. That’s part of the reason why SUVs, crossovers and pickups have been experiencing such an uptick in popularity over the last decade or so. But now Toyota is giving Canadian and U.S. drivers a couple of other, uh, less-large options. The 2020 Camry and 2021 Avalon sedans will now be offered with the option for AWD.Toyota announced it’s making its Dynamic Torque Control AWD system (pulled from the 2019 RAV4) available as a standalone option on the Camry LE, XLE, SE and XSE, as well as on the brand’s flagship sedan, the Avalon Limited, both of which are built at the Toyota plant in Kentucky.   The AWD system is able to interpret front-wheel slippage and actively send up to 50 per cent of engine torque to the back wheels to counter it. It can also sense when it’s not needed and disengage from the front drive to save on fuel. Both cars will pair said system with Toyota’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and eight-speed automatic transmission. This is the first time in its lifetime the Avalon has been granted the ability to move with four wheels at once. The Camry did come in AWD guise back in 1988 to 1991, when it bore the AllTrac badge. Toyota says it “appreciates the loyalty, patience and perseverance of all those customers and dealers who sent letters, emails, Facebook comments and texts asking for a modern AWD version of the Camry.”The AWD 2020 Camry and 2021
