bc i got fucking possessed to make an "everyone lives au" with the doomed june who met vv/VV trying to save them, and i've written 3000 words and change already. gotta go back and do all the quirks and colors when i'm done (won't be for a while bc it's a whole thing).

and also might pull some ideas from the crow strider au bc if i'm doing a hopeful story that's like a pinnacle to aspire to. btw it's not a fix it fic bc i don't think anything with the og is wrong; i'm just exploring what could be, in the open space that is left between this june and her obliteration in canon. and i think any roxy would be proud of this june, even if the canon one can't experience the spoils.

a story (especially a written one bc i got worse at reading after highschool lol, burnout go brr) hasn't gripped me this hard in fucking forever. i have shit to do rn but i'm fucking entranced.

ngl i recommend godfeels, BUT. with the caveat that it is a fucked up rough read. it's immeasurably good, but at the same time honestly more fucked in some places than the epilogues. so very fucked up. but it's so good.

like i feel bad recommending rough reads/listens/watches (like disco elysium, dark [that one show in german on netflix iykyk], hello from the hallowoods, both magnus podcasts, and more; bc i guess i'm just a fucked up little guy [gender neutral] idk), but they can be life altering in a good way. i don't regret my time spent on/in any of those stories. they made me who i am, and i am making myself through one rn.

i avoided homestuck anything for so long and finally dived in headfirst on a reading of it (guilty flygon, my fave terezi voice imo) in early december bc i needed a distraction from, like, everything; and i get the hype now. i think i wouldn't've been able to handle it when i was younger so i'm glad i waited.

since then (gods, only two months wtf) i've consumed the whole og comic, the epilogues, and am up to date on beyond canon as of early feb. i also read all of crow strider and watched mayhaps too many comic dubs, before stumbling upon the godfeels podcast from a post on the voft discord. after listening to all six episodes, i immediately started reading and now i'm here.

idk if i even want people to read this or respond to it but if i utter that i read anything homestuck related to people irl... well, yeah. people are judgemental, surprise surprise. so here i am ig. yeeting a journal entry rant thing into schrodinger's void. bc there might be someone looking back.

I’ve just returned from vacation, and have the freedom once again to include longer series - and long long series (description of how that’ll work below with the propaganda) - in these polls!

As always, propaganda* (*rambles about series I haven’t finished and how little I know about series I haven’t started yet, etc) below the poll. You’re welcome to reblog if you wanna bully your followers into voting for your fave. Other people’s followers and assorted Tumblr users: you don’t have to know me, follow me, or like me to throw anime at me. You don’t even have to like anime if you just wanna press a button. How the long long series will work in my polls:

We all know some anime series are hundreds - even thousands - of episodes long. When it comes to these polls, rather than straight-shotting through these beasts, I’ll break them up by however the series is naturally divided (by season or arc - whatever that series has chosen). If there’s a shorter season/arc, it may be combined into the next one (for instance if one arc has 16 episodes and the one after has 30, I’ll watch 46eps for that poll option, since that’s pretty manageable. We’ll play it by ear, folks). I’ll always be specific in the propaganda about how far I’ll be watching for that particular poll and update my pinned post with my progress for that specific series after. The series may not show up in back-to-back polls for the sake of taking breaks and not burning myself out on the same thing.

Rambles about the options:

Blue Exorcist - I watched everything available circa 2014/15ish, but now there’s more? Apparently? I guess? Cool! I’ll probably rewatch what I have seen since it’s been a while and proceed from there.

Free! - I watched ISC and ES as they were airing. In sub. And y’all know I prefer dubs (of course I went back and watched it when there was finally a dub). But while everything past Eternal Summer was airing, I was in my busy period… 😬 Still have to finish it - but to be clear, I will be marathoning everything, starting yet again with Iwatobi Swim Club. these always make me nervous, because i edit so much that this is probably not going to end up in the actual finished fic. but here we go anyway:

“You know, it's a shame that you two don't get along,” Hange called out from behind him, the sound of their footsteps echoing in the empty room. “You're both freakishly strong and obsessed with cleanliness, I mean... if that isn't a match made in heaven!”

23. Dialogue or description? Why is the other one so hard?

OH MY GOD, DIALOGUE FTW, are you joking?? dialogue is so much easier! it's usually how i get ideas for fics, and no prompt works better on me than the "include this quote in your fic" ones. i can hear and see the characters speak in my head and adjust whenever i realize i wrote something that was ooc or useless, or when i think of a powerful line that i'd like to include that echoes either canon or something else i've put in the same fic/universe... i love dialogue so much, and it's so fun to play with all the different options of it: spoken out loud, in the character's head, adding details about how or why they're saying it or what they're doing as they say it, put an emphasis on howwri it's interpreted by other people when i'm writing from another character's pov... i just. LOVE. IT.

description... sucks. can't people who read my fics just see what i'm picturing in my mind without me having to describe it??? uggggh. i think it's so hard because a) english is not my native language and i'm not as good as i thought i was at it, and as a result i find myself lacking in vocabulary to express stuff i'd be perfectly able to depict in my language (and i know i could just search for translations, but it's tedious and frustrating work and i loathe how it interrupts the flow of my writing and makes it feel like homework, brrr); and b) i usually find it's the most boring part of both writing or reading? like, of course it's necessary, but description feels to me like either a break or a soft way to ease into a scene, and as someone who's very hands-on and likes to jump right into action rather than being gently led to it, i have very high standards for it. it needs to be relevant to the plot or the scene, or to be a necessary break (in a particularly action-packed scene, to mark the passage of time, to put emphasis on a character's feelings, to take a lil break in the middle of smut, to hike up the suspense...), and i don't feel like i'm good enough to write it so it fits those conditions. which is why (and i'm painfully aware of it) it's blatantly lacking in my own writing oops x)

Some folks in my (adult) German class have been using ChatGPT to do their assignments. And like. We don't get in trouble for not doing homework here. The teacher gets disappointed but none of it is graded. We're adults in a class of other adults, and we're studying for a particular milestone test (which is today and I'm sick pray for me) during which we can't have our phones with us. These assignments only exist to practice and make your brain go brrr. There's literally no point in handing that work off to generative AI. I don't understand it.

Something I don't think we talk enough about in discussions surrounding AI is the loss of perseverance.

I have a friend who works in education and he told me about how he was working with a small group of HS students to develop a new school sports chant. This was a very daunting task for the group, in large part because many had learning disabilities related to reading and writing, so coming up with a catchy, hard-hitting, probably rhyming, poetry-esque piece of collaborative writing felt like something outside of their skill range. But it wasn't! I knew that, he knew that, and he worked damn hard to convince the kids of that too. Even if the end result was terrible (by someone else's standards), we knew they had it in them to complete the piece and feel super proud of their creation.

Fast-forward a few days and he reports back that yes they have a chant now... but it's 99% AI. It was made by Chat-GPT. Once the kids realized they could just ask the bot to do the hard thing for them - and do it "better" than they (supposedly) ever could - that's the only route they were willing to take. It was either use Chat-GPT or don't do it at all. And I was just so devastated to hear this because Jesus Christ, struggling is important. Of course most 14-18 year olds aren't going to see the merit of that, let alone understand why that process (attempting something new and challenging) is more valuable than the end result (a "good" chant), but as adults we all have a responsibility to coach them through that messy process. Except that's become damn near impossible with an Instantly Do The Thing app in everyone's pocket. Yes, AI is fucking awful because of plagiarism and misinformation and the environmental impact, but it's also keeping people - particularly young people - from developing perseverance. It's not just important that you learn to write your own stuff because of intellectual agency, but because writing is hard and it's crucial that you learn how to persevere through doing hard things.

Write a shitty poem. Write an essay where half the textual 'evidence' doesn't track. Write an awkward as fuck email with an equally embarrassing typo. Every time you do you're not just developing that particular skill, you're also learning that you did something badly and the world didn't end. You can get through things! You can get through challenging things! Not everything in life has to be perfect but you know what? You'll only improve at the challenging stuff if you do a whole lot of it badly first. The ability to say, "I didn't think I could do that but I did it anyway. It's not great, but I did it," is SO IMPORTANT for developing confidence across the board, not just in these specific tasks.

Idk I'm just really worried about kids having to grow up in a world where (for a variety of reasons beyond just AI) they're not given the chance to struggle through new and challenging things like we used to.

Sorry for being inactive I've been mostly sleeping and doing homework lately,, I've also shifted fixations so I feel less inclined to post here since everyone I'm mutuals with followed me because of David Tennant or doctor who (I'm aware that literally none of you guys would mind if I started spamming about bears in trees but it's still mehh though iykwim) (also I'm not sure if the David/dw fixation is gone or just not my main fixation atm I can't tell because I'm so brrr about bears in trees so idk what is going on with that rn)
