Another unnerving aspect of the homestudy is the checklist you have to fill out to indicate what kind of child you are willing to accept. Will you take a child with a physical deformity? A medical condition? Cognitive delays? What race are you open to? Will you take siblings? What ages are you willing to accept? Filling out this checklist felt like a measure of my humanity. I felt like, if I was…
Homestudy went great and that was the last step in the process. It should take about a week to get the paperwork sent up the chain to be officially approved. I asked the homestudy person how soon after approval I could expect to be notified about a kid and she said they get calls daily.
Also, the urge to spend alllll my money in the Target kids aisle was so strong. I held firm and only bought some flannel blankets, which I actually needed, and didn't get any clothes.
AND I scored an uppababy vista with lots of accessories for $275 on Facebook Marketplace :)

Today I had to write a summer update (June/July/August) for work and in these three months I got 400 (four! hundred!) referrals. Damn.
But also, we placed 18 children. Considering how many foster homes we have (not many compared to our peak) that’s way more than I expected and I keep revisiting the list to make sure I didn’t fuck it up but no we really did. One child was admitted, discharged, then admitted again, but otherwise we genuinely placed that many children and I’m pleased about it.
Our newest opened homes are presenting some concerns that I’m worried about to varying degrees but most of it can be helped with more support and guidance. One of them boils down to the family being whack and apparently lying during the homestudy process soooooo that’s something we gotta deal with but. The rest seem to be adjusting and receptive to feedback.
It’s so hard to find good foster parents but they gotta start somewhere and it makes me so anxious that real children have to endure their learning curve in the process.
