hello!!! it's delletor again, the one who asked about meet ups and such, thank you, mod nepeta, for that information, by the way! it helped a lot! anyways, me and my friend were kind of thinking about ALSO hosting a panel at metrocon on saturday perhaps, buuuut the thing is, we need people and also don't know anything about making panels. neither of us are 18, is that a requirement for making panels? also, do you have any other info you could perhaps give?

My lovely Mod did a great Job answering the last one, but I thought I’d give this one a go! I’ve been paneling since 2013, and believe me I can understand how intimidating it is! Firstly, being 18 is not a requirement, as metrocon is a PG-13 con, but to make an account on http://myconsonline.com/ it asks you to be 13+, but that’s the only requirement I see. 

With that, on to the list!

Don’t panic. This is the number one rule of both meetups and panels! When you’re in the mouth of the beast, you gotta remind yourself to keep a cool head. 

Know your limits! This is important because a panel is a performance. You will be in front of a crowd, you will be improving and/or acting, people will judge you, you will need to manage a group of people and whatever drama comes with that, you will need to be decisive, and you will need to be a leader. Please be aware of all this so you don’t have a panic attack before/during the panel and hurt yourself needlessly. Yes, panels are fun, but your health is the most important thing! Be honest with yourself and what you are capable of!

Understand your location, Metrocon does NOT give out sound equipment, and has limited space in the two panel rooms with TV’s. If you need speakers, or have visual aids, be sure to have a back up plan in the likely event you don’t get the room you want! Metrocon is also all about loyalty and experience. They favor those they have worked well with in the past and who submit their ideas ahead of time! You will need a good idea to catch their attention, and this goes for any big con!

Have a game plan! Now you want to run a panel, but you need a good idea. Metrocon is a large con with hundreds of submissions to go through! Con’s see tons of Q & A’s, and there are always fifty different people submitting those types of panels. You need something that will set you out from the rest and really wow them!  

Plan a time, but be open to change. Metrocon is different where instead of assigning times, they let you choose. HOWEVER, there is limited space and there is no telling if you will be accepted early enough to get the spot you want. Be open to other days and times and plan accordingly! This goes for any large con, smaller cons however have the leeway to work with you a little more.

Submit your panel. So, now that you have your idea, you’ll need to submit your panel! I mentioned it above, but you’ll need to go to http://myconsonline.com/, sign up, and submit through Metrocon’s portal. BE SURE TO READ THE PANEL GUIDELINES ON METROCONS OFFICIAL SITE BEFORE SUBMITTING! The approval process can take awhile as this is a large con with a lot of responsibilities! Sometimes you won’t know till a week before depending on when you submit. The earlier the better!

Squad up. While you wait for the approval, you’ll want to have a casting call. Here’s a Template Post:

What: (Describe your Panel)

Where: (Insert convention here)

Looking for: (Insert bullet point list of characters you need.)

Deadline: (If you do auditions, the latest time to audition.)

Contact: (The best way to contact you about auditions.)

How do I decide who to take??? Personally, I do auditions as I think that’s a fair way to judge peoples skills and to decide if I get two fantastic cosplayers. However, this is a personal choice and completely up to you. It’s important for the panels I run that people have a solid cosplay, good improve skills, work well with a large group, and take criticism well. Panels are a performance, and that’s the approach I take when doing them, but if you have a different method, that’s your choice. As an example, here’s a link to our submission page and the requirements we ask for. 

Guarantee panelists are going! Plenty of people can say they are going, but plans change. Ask for proof of tickets, hotel, etc. If someone drops out three months before the panel, no big, but make sure everyone has their arrangements a month before otherwise you will be in for a scramble when people start dropping. 

Okay, I got my crew, what now? P R A C T I C E!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t think I can emphasize that enough. The best Q and As I have ever been too is when the panelists can build off each other, they banter, they add to each others answers and really feel like friends because you will be!! They only way to do that is TO PRACTICE!!!! I have never been happier then now with the group I’ve surrounded myself with. I know I can trust them to save me if I fudge up,and viceversa. That sense of community, I think that’s the best thing when going into a panel~

The Drama Llama has appeared I mentioned it earlier, but I feel the need to emphasize as the panel host you will be in charge. Dealing with large groups of people, issues will come up (ESPECIALLY with Homestucks as everyone tends to know each other)  and you have to do your best to be impartial and make the best decision for the group as a whole. There is no perfect answer in situations like these, and sometimes it can be stressful, sometimes you’ll make the wrong call, but do your best and stick with what you know and aim for the best possible outcome for all involved! Remember though, you can’t always please everyone and have to be prepared for worst case scenarios. 

ADVERTISE. I shall quote my fellow mod, “OMG ADVERTISE TILL YOUR FACE TURNS BLUE. The more people know about your event, the better! Keep people informed, make sure you give your panel info to every Homestuck tumblr that deals with florida or conventions or anything, make a facebook page, tweet on twitter, and make posts on instagram. Social Media is a powerful tool, you can use this to your advantage.” This is true for any event!

ZOMYGAWD ITS PANEL TIME Deep breathes, you got this! Try and have your group meet up an hour ahead of time to chat and get the jitters out. Saturday at HolMat 2015, I did an 18+ panel for the first time and goofing around with everyone before hand was the biggest stress relief. It also assures everyone is there on time so you don’t have to go hunting! Be sure to get plenty of rest the night before and eat and drink throughout the day! As I said earlier, your health is the most important!! The last thing you need is to faint during the panel, and not taking care of yourself is a sure fire way to make your stress levels go through the roof!

Be respectful of the con staff, and fellow panel hosts! Homestucks tend to crowd (a BIG problem at cons that people can be really disrespectful of), so having an orderly line form outside the panel room and adhering to safety standards before you let people in is a sure way to get on a cons good side! They are running the event, be sure to listen to what they tell you and work with them, not against! On that vein, while your panel is important, there will be one after yours. Be sure to vacate the room in a timely manner to give the people after you plenty of time to get in and set up!! BE RESPECTFUL AND PEOPLE WILL RESPECT YOU!!!! A staffer once ran to get me an av cord, which he didn’t have to do, so I could do my panel and I had the whole room cheer and thank him. It’s a long weekend, and sometimes people just need to know you appreciate what they do.

Work with your fellow Hometucks! My fellow mod also had it right on the money “@floridastuck/ @sunshineplayers (as of last year) make it a habit to make a homestuck themed schedule with times and locations of all the homestuck stuff that’s happening during metrocon, so its just easier for everyone. Even more so, coming to the panels and asking nicely/politely if the panelists could advertise your event for the day at the end of the panel is a possibility.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Something will go wrong, or something that you don’t expect. Ask your co-hosts for help, or even ask for advice! My instagram is @floridastuck and if you have any problems feel free to DM me.

Overall, have fun. Yes, panels are a production, but at the end of the day you are taking time out of your life to do this! Remember to enjoy it~

Heya guys! Sorry for the LACK of art/comic an yada yada, I have been busy, had feels ((and lazy has fuck 8)) BUTT hey! Check out a panel I was in during Närcon summer in sweden 2015! I was Tavros Nitram ((lmao)) and all who attended where super wonderfull and pretty~! uvu <3
