We lost our real property home in northwest Oregon due to the not-so-great recession, post 2008, and had to relocate to a small duplex apartment in Milwaukie, Oregon, just south of Portland. I’m certain that the place was once a roadside motel that got converted into multi-family apartments. Ours was adjacent to Meth addicts. Most of the tenants there were poor people just struggling to survive. Some were salt of the earth, others, petty criminals, and social degenerates. The property manager and building supervisor was this Gen X guy who played video games all day. I liked the area, but hated the people. We were both homesick for Southern California and wanted to move back, but couldn’t afford to rent even a small house. Los Angeles was out of the question. You have to be a millionaire to rent a 1950s, two-bedroom house. Affordable housing? Not in L.A., dude. We explored other areas and cities in California—even Fresno and Bakersfield. Pamela would gather crime statistics whenever she investigated a potential area. Those towns were a no-go! We ended up living there for a year.

Long story short, Pamela found a mobile home for rent in San Jacinto, California, a small desert city of about 60,000, located midway between the Cities of Riverside and Palm Springs. It was an affordable $795 per month—cheap for So-Cal—situated on its own lot with an attached garage and its own mailing address. Pamela visited the area, saw the property, and we decided to go for it. We had a cool view of the San Jacinto Mountains from the place; Palm Springs was located on the opposite side. It was situated in a lousy area, though. I have already written about our experiences there.

We lived there for three years, all the while continuing our long distance search for a permanent New York home. When that didn’t pan out, and our landlord wanted to re-occupy, we moved to another, larger mobile home just a mile or so northeast of us. It was located in a self-contained, mobile home park called the Soboba Springs Mobile Home Estates—“a 50+ residential community.” This locale—with lots of greenery and small streets—was a great improvement over the last place. Situated at the foot of the San Jacinto Mountains and away from the main drag, we found it peaceful and safe. Plus, we could handle the $850 per month rent. Our landlady had listed the place for sale for about a year when she rented it to us.

The home’s layout was okay. It had been assembled and installed at the mobile home park during the late 70’s. A large portion of the interior had that cheap, brown wood paneling, and brown wall-to-wall carpeting throughout—even in the bathrooms! Bottom line, though, it was a large, two-bedroom place made of tin. I used to call it a tin can. Our bedroom was always hot and humid at night, even with a window open and the ceiling fan on. We couldn’t open the second window behind our headboard because it was screwed shut.

It was a nice park overall, with a panoramic view of the San Jacinto Mountains. Across the asphalt road was a large park and, in its center, a man-made lake. There were lots of old growth trees, tall palms, and olive trees, and the streets were divided by wide, green medians. Residents routinely walked their dogs along these, as allowing their dogs to relieve themselves in the tiny backyards was discouraged. The biggest downside of the park—aside from the daily parade of elderly and ill residents—was the highly dense environment created by the homes being located right next to one another; there was just about ten feet between them. Each one was identified by its own “space” number. We lived in Space 166.

We all live in a nation of mentally-challenged, white people. At Soboba Springs, it was evidential living. There was a black family who lived across the street from us, and a black couple who lived in the home to our left. They were the most normal people we encountered. When we first moved here, the couple to our left included this fat white guy and his South American fiancé. (She later told us that they’d been fiancées for 7 years!) She was fat, too. The man, who I’ll call Frank, had curly, short and neatly trimmed, salt and pepper hair. He had a loud, gravelly voice that could have peeled paint from your car. Daily, he would either be outside, yelling at somebody on his cell phone or yelling at his fiancé (sic) from inside their house: “You forgot to buy that glue I need! Do I have to write everything down for you?!” Sometimes I would sit outside on my plastic chair, under the carport, and have a smoke…my way of meditation while I gazed upon the serene, San Jacinto Mountains. Inevitably, Frank would come out of his house and sit down on his porch to smoke a cigar, or yell at some person on his phone. He would look over to see me sitting in my chair. At first, he asked me if I knew anybody who needed an auto mechanic. He claimed he was the best in valley. I told him I didn’t. Then, he went into his Anti-Obama diatribe. Before long, he started to promote his candidate, Donald J. Trump. ‘Oh! He is going to make America great again and stop all the illegal aliens from coming into our Aryan Nation!’ Meanwhile, his fiancé, in very broken English, meekly defended herself or passively-agressively nagged him. I remained silent and avoided in engaging in any political debate. I know these types; they can get violent and things could get ugly. After a couple of months, they moved out and the black couple moved in. I was so relieved.

To our right, there was this widow in her early 60’s. She stood about six feet one and her name was Carrie. She had short, dyed, bright red hair, pale blue eyes, and wore a large cross around her neck. Her curtains were never opened and the outside of her place looked like a hoarder’s. Old car batteries were stacked up against an old car tire, unstable metal shelves with a hodgepodge of unrelated stuff, overloaded storage bins, and multiple trash cans. There was junk everywhere. She claimed she was a devout Christian, however, I never heard her proselytize to anybody. She worked for the City of Riverside, located about 40 miles away. Every morning at 5 a.m., I could hear her get into her car and leave her driveway. I once got into a conversation with her and she started to complain about how the City was not paying her much. I asked her if she belonged to a union and, all of a sudden, she started to cry! Then, she jumped into her car and took off. She did that often. I think she suffered from Pseudo Bulbar disorder. Later, she told me she was hard of hearing. That I believed because her alarm went off around four in the morning and it would stay on the entire day! She never heard it or thought to turn it off.

Directly behind us, over the six-foot, white vinyl fence, lived two, fat Gen X brothers. One must have been the other’s caretaker. I think that the cared-for brother must have been a schizophrenic paranoiac. He wore thick prescription glasses, was partially bald and always unshaven. One time, I was lowering the blinds in my bedroom and saw him doing the same thing. He noticed me looking in his direction and quickly pulled down his window shades. He was always angry with his brother while he told him about the voices in his head. “The voice is telling to me to kill you!” I would hear him say. Another weird thing he did was to put mannequins in his rear window. One day, I was cutting shrubs in our backyard and got creeped out by this guy gawking at me from their window. I looked closer and realized it was a fucking dummy!

Also in back of us and to the left of the Gen X Brothers, were these two women. One was in her 60’s and the other was her daughter in her 30’s. They were both alcoholics. At six in the morning, they would be in their backyard, drinking beer, laughing and blathering loudly. I wanted to yell out my window, “It’s 6 in the morning! Shut the hell up, you drunken bitches!”

Pamela and I finally realized our long-term dream to move to New York. We now live in our own home, located in a small village in the Catskill Mountains. Neighbors on either side of us are situated at least 50 feet away, with only trees and forest behind us. I couldn’t be happier! I sometimes wonder about how our old neighbors are making out during this Corona-virus quarantine. You know what? I couldn’t give a tinker’s damn!

I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. But the guy had me signing off on insurance and what not. I guess the insurance on my car would cover the rental if I had an accident. But they would take from my cars deductible. So I basically signed off on a Collision Damage Waiver and also personal accident insurance. I did decline supplemental liability insurance though. Should the warranty be covering these fees or was this an extra that I got talked into? Because if the warranty covers the rental they aren't making anything. My understanding is it could be better because I am covered under their insurance if I have an accident and it wouldn't come off my own cars deductible? Kind of new to this and probably wouldn't have been worth trying to argue it after the fact that I signed off on stuff.So if I use this car for like 3 days I'm in it for like $60 in insurance. Also does anyone know how this buying the tank of gas works? I understood it as if I use so much then I pay there price of $5.60 a gallon. But I got told it was best to just buy the whole tank at $3.30 per gallon(best option seeing as gas is so much these days) And then to return it as close to empty as possible to get my moneys worth. If anyone can help me out so I know for next time if I can decline stuff or did I take the right steps and take there insurance so mine wouldn't be charged? Why such a difference between insurance quotes on a 2011 Challenger?

I got quotes from Geico, Nationwide, and Progressive I chose full coverage 500 dollar deductible on a 2000 Silverado 1500 4X4 3DR and a 2011 Dodge Challenger SE 2Dr Coupe This is for a 20 year old guy with clean driving record. Why are they so different? These are the prices I got Nationwide - $603 a month Progreeive - $450 a month Geico - $187 a month If Geico didn't offer it for $187 I would not be able to buy the 2011 Challenger. Does anyone know if Geico will go up to $400 or $600 a month after my first 6 month's I really need to know cause this is my last deciding factor before buying the Challenger?""
