Behind-the-scenes #Lukola moments from my fanfiction - Luke is in Milan after the Bridgerton S3 London Premiere and he is missing Nicola.
(Excerpt taken from my fanfiction 'Curtain Fall')
June 15th 2024 – Milan (Italy)
Refuge.
That was Luke’s first thought as he surveyed the palatial Four Seasons suite that was his temporary home.
The living room was an airy space with tasteful elements of Italian and contemporary décor. A sage sofa and matching armchairs were arranged around an elegant walnut table. Tall, clear vases with bouquets of red, lavender and pink chrysanthemums brightened up different parts of the room. Arched floor-to-ceiling windows gave an impressive view of the tranquil courtyard and the pink-red sky outside.
Eagerly, he slipped off his black leather shoes and padded his way into the bedroom where a sumptuous king-sized bed with neutral toned sheets greeted him.
He could hear the low hum of air conditioning kicking in, but the heavy, black Dolce and Gabbana leather jacket he had been wearing all day was still unbearable to be in. Every part of him wanted to tear off it off but he resisted the urge; instead opting to gingerly peel it off himself, being mindful not to scuff the material. He was still not clear on the rules. Was the jacket his to keep or would they want it back? Either way, the thought of even slightly damaging a loaned item bothered him enough to be careful.
Dressed just in the mercifully breathable fabric that was a linen black vest and trousers; he sank down onto the plush bed with a deep and satisfied sigh.
With his eyes closed, images of the day flew through his mind: he was at Milan Fashion Week, he was stood before cameras or in front of crowds of people and everywhere he looked, someone wanted his attention. It was overwhelming to recall. Yet, he felt he should be used to this level of exposure at this point. He had accepted he would never enjoy having to be entirely himself for the masses, he was more comfortable playing a role, but even so, he had hoped that after several months of press, it would all start to come more naturally to him. It bothered him that a day like today still wore so heavily on him.
He wandered if he needed to admit to himself that one of the reasons being here was so challenging was that he was doing it without Nicola. They had been the balance for each other. Whether they walked onto a red carpet or into a studio for a sit-down interview, they did it with hands intertwined, heads held high and a promise from Nicola to take over the talking if needed. Given her charismatic energy, she did not usually need to try to take the spotlight away, it naturally fell upon her. It made things easier. She made things easier.
Still, cultivating a public image was an important part of success as an actor and he did not want to waste any opportunities that were offered to him outside of the Bridgerton brand. Who knew how long anyone would know his name for? His mothers’ words echoed in his mind: make hay while the sun shines.
He allowed himself to flop back onto the bed, holding his phone out in front of him as he scrolled.
Without thinking, he was on Nicola’s Instagram and watching her story updates. There were photos from the London Bridgerton premiere which had only taken place a few days before. He looked through her feed, scrolling past images from all around the world from their promotional tour. There was a series of photos of them in Rio De Janeiro, her in a white dress and him in a grey-blue button down posing with a guitar. The memory it invoked made him smile. The Nicola and Luke on his screen were deeply connected, sharing everything from inane jokes to their deepest fears about their burgeoning careers.
He could admit that a hollow feeling had been growing inside him all day as he went through the motions of attending a high-profile fashion show but not being able to share details of it with the one person who would appreciate it the most. Being the avid fashionista, he knew she would have given him the third degree about every element of the day. What was he wearing? Why was he wearing it – what was the artistic vision? How did the clothes make him feel? Which season were they from? He would have responded in a deliberately ignorant way just to work her up into a frustration, which in turn would have amused him enough to make the day seem a little lighter. In fact, he could have called her right there and then and shared how he was feeling. He could have told her that he was growing tiresome of being recognized but at the same time, he was terrified of losing the recognition. She would not only have understood the paradox but also helped him laugh about it.
It stung that things were not as simple as just picking up the phone and speaking to each other anymore. There was a distance between them now that upset him.
He realised in that moment that he was brooding alone in a luxurious room that was growing darker as the day vanished. His life had never been more beautiful and at the same time, he had never felt lonelier.
What a fucking cliché. He thought with some disgust at himself.
You’re not even alone on this trip.
Somehow, this reminder did little to comfort him.
He was fortunate to be in a loving relationship with someone who cared about him. Yet, as the months had stretched on, he had a growing awareness that it had that had developed in abnormal circumstances. Their earliest dates had involved luxury travel and red-carpet events. It was not easy to mature as a couple when your most meaningful conversations were about designer clothes and trip itineraries. He hated himself for not being able to switch off the sense of paranoia he had that perhaps this was not the right time in his life to try to have a girlfriend, especially someone who did know truly know the version of him before his life became so surreal. He felt a strong sense of guilt for entertaining this thinking. It was not Antonia’s fault that they had connected just as his life had catapulted into all of this. It was also not her fault that they had not really had any important conversations about where their relationship was going. Between all the events and travel, there never seemed to be the right time. Now that her photo was plastered all over the press and social media, a break-up felt even more challenging to navigate. Truthfully, he did not have the bandwidth for it.
He wanted to get his mind away from these darker thoughts. Instinctively, he navigated his way through his phone to the video. It was kept tucked in a folder within a folder.
He was not sure why he had kept it.
Every instinct in his body screamed at him that it was a foolish thing to do.
Yet, there seemed to be something painful about the physical act of pressing ‘delete’ on it. He reasoned he did not want to wipe the memory away, and sometimes, he needed physical proof that it had ever even happened.
He hit play.
The dimly lit interior of his trailer on the Bridgerton set came into view. However, there was enough light for the scene that was playing out to be clear. There was a paisley patterned sofa on which he and Nicola were locked into a frantic embrace. Their hands and arms running all over each other’s body, their mouths locked in a passionate kiss. He was shirtless. Her usually expertly styled hair was disheveled. There was no sound except for their breathless panting. The strap of her black vest slid down her shoulder and his hand yanked at it, pulling it down further.
Watching it back did things to his body that he tried to suppress.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps entering the suite hallway jolted him back into reality. He abruptly swiped out of the gallery app and pressed the button to lock his phone.
Antonia appeared at the doorway, clad in a bright green bikini with a white coverall and a sunhat.
“What are you doing here, brooding in the dark?” She smirked, pulling her hat off and placing it on the dresser drawer that stood at the entrance of the bedroom.
“Just needed to recharge.” He smiled back at her as she climbed onto the bed on all fours, slinking up to him like a cat. He realised how much his heart was racing. He hoped she would think it was the effect she was having on him.
“Have you recharged enough to want to go to the afterparty?” She put her head on the pillow next to him and looked at him pleadingly. “Pretty please?”
“Ughhh…” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I am so after-partied out.”
As he spoke the words, he felt bad. She had dutifully spent the day at the hotel by herself whilst he had attended the show. He had realised too late that he would be seated front row and there would be no room for a plus-one. Attending the after-party was her one opportunity to experience some of the glitz of Fashion Week.
“Well, I guess we can just order room service.” She looked disappointed.
He sat up. “No, we’ll go.”
“You’re just saying that because I want to go.” She fixed him with a look.
“No, I really want to go. I just needed to hear that the other option is room service to make me realise it. I can’t think of anything more boring.” He lied.
She let out a happy squeal, jumping up from the bed as she did so. “Ahh, I am so glad.”
“Right, I have three outfits – you can choose which one you like best.” She offered; excitement in her eyes.
He could not help but to laugh. It was nice to see someone enjoying themselves.

Do You Have ‘Bookshelf Wealth’?
A TikTok home-décor trend has irked some bibliophiles.
By Madison Malone Kircher
Published in the New York Times, Jan. 15, 2024
When it comes to aesthetic trends, social media loves a catchy name.
Cottagecore. Dark academia. Eclectic grandpa.
Now there’s a new entry to the canon: bookshelf wealth.
On TikTok and other digital platforms, there has lately been much ado about people who own a great number of books and — this is critical — have managed to stage them in a pleasing manner.
If you’ve ever seen a Nancy Meyers movie, the look might ring a bell. Warm and welcoming. Polished, but not stuffy. A bronze lamp here. A vintage vase there (with fresh-cut flowers, of course). Perhaps there is a cozy seating area near the floor-to-ceiling display, with an overstuffed couch topped with tasteful throw pillows.
Kailee Blalock, an interior designer in San Diego, posted a video to TikTok last month that sought to define bookshelf wealth and school viewers in achieving the aesthetic in their own homes.
“These aren’t display books,” Ms. Blalock, 26, cautions in the video, which has been viewed over 1.3 million times. “These are books that have actually been curated and read.”
This literary look, she went on to say, goes well with pictures hung willy-nilly on the walls, sometimes even partly blocking the shelves, as well as mismatched fabric patterns and a bit of clutter.
In an interview, Ms. Blalock expanded on her advice. “I think to really achieve the look and the lifestyle, someone has to be an avid reader and has to appreciate the act of collecting things, especially art and sculpture,” she said.
Though Ms. Blalock did not originate the term “bookshelf wealth,” her video has spurred plenty of online discussion. “The day I ‘cultivate’ books instead of buying what I like to read is the day I’ll know I’ve truly failed as a human,” one user commented. Others remarked how bookshelf wealth was less about reading and more about regular old wealth.
Breana Newton, a legal coordinator in Princeton, N.J., who posts regularly about books on TikTok, was one of the people who responded to Ms. Blalock’s video. “I am going to show you bookshelf wealth,” Ms. Newton, 33, says in a video of her own. “Ready?”
She then gives viewers a brief tour of her home, showing books everywhere — on shelves, in overflow piles here and there, and strewed across the bed. Absent is the sense that the rooms have been staged, or that the books were bought with the consideration of how they would look on Instagram.
In an interview, Ms. Newton said that she worried trends like bookshelf wealth encourage overconsumption. This year, she added, she is trying not to buy any new books.
Another critic of the trend, Keila Tirado-Leist, said in a reaction video: “Who does it benefit to constantly have to name and qualify and attach wealth to any kind of style or home-décor aesthetic?”
Ms. Tirado-Leist, a lifestyle content creator in Madison, Wis., likened bookshelf wealth to “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth,” styles that have recently made social media waves.
Still, she was understanding that what drives a home-décor trend like this one is a desire to create a home that feels, well, homey. In another video, she described the idea of layering — that is, slowly acquiring pieces and building up to a finished look, rather than trying to buy a bunch of things all at once in an effort to chase a trend.
“Styling a home takes time,” Ms. Tirado-Leist said.
Another TikTok user put it more bluntly in a response to Ms. Blalock’s video: “Bookshelf wealth does not mean you have books. It means you have built-ins.”

Champaign Tastes on a Bottled Water Budget (because let’s face it, even beer isn’t cheap anymore) Thrift Tips
People are over living in white boxes. We now want richness and texture and colors and interest. Traditional design styles with lots of molding and detail and antiques are very in. People are making a living selling antiques online. Décor bloggers aspire to being able to bring back a container from European flea markets. People want to make their homes look like you have generational wealth. But how do you have a home full of beautiful old things when you’ve got no money? Thrifting.
1. Always always check the art. Remember if you love the art but hate the frame you can always put it in a new frame, or makeover the current one. And vice versa, if you love the frame but hate what’s in it then it’s the simplest thing in the world to swap it out for something else, another piece of thrifted art, a print from Etsy or one of the many other places artists sell digital copies of their work, a color photocopy from a library book. And frames are very easy to make over, sometimes just changing the matting or painting a frame a different color or adding a little rub n buff makes a world of difference.
2. Rub n Buff or similar waxes are your friend for getting a gorgeous, antiqued look. The thrift stores are full of pieces that have great shape but they’re too modern looking for what you’re trying to achieve. But rub gold on the high points or a dark wax into the crevasses and suddenly they look completely different. I’ve got a ceramic parrot that looked very 80s when I got my hands on it but when I covered it with gold (leaving the original dark colors in the crevasses) he immediately looked like an antique. Just spray-painting something gold doesn’t have the same effect, using a wax creates depth.
3. Darken it up. Most old things are darker than new things. Darker furniture, fabrics, accessories, add depth and richness. If something is already dark, then when you thrift it then great. If it’s not then that’s what dye, paint, and stain are for.
4. Old souvenir pieces. I’ve got a load of old pieces that people have bought back from Greece and Rome, from Egypt, from China. They make my home look like it belongs to someone who has been on a Grand Tour. A lot of them are copies of ancient pieces which means they look timeless. They’re cheap tchotchkes that people have bought at gift shops but mix them in with old books and candle holders and natural pieces like chunks or crystal or large seashells, and they look classy and interesting.
5. Old books. Do you have any idea how many old books get thrown out by thrift stores? Like genuine antiques that get sent to landfill? Most thrift stores don’t want to deal with old books because they smell and harbor dust mites and are out of date and often look tatty. You may even be able to get a bunch for free if you sweet talk the volunteers. If you’re worried about dust mites, then pop them in the freezer for a few days. I know there are those who look down on people who use books just as décor, but if you using it as décor saves it from a landfill or a junk journaler and preserves it for a future generation then isn’t that a good thing?
6. Glass display items. Putting things behind glass makes them look lux and precious even if it’s some cheap trinket or even a bunch of dried leaves or other completely free natural items. Look for domes, plain clear vases you can turn upside down and glue a knob on top, display boxes holding ugly stuff that you can rip the ugly stuff out and re-purpose.
7. Antique reproductions. There’s been many points in history since humans started to mass manufacture stuff, that we have looked to the past a re-created what our forbears made by hand. There’s so much that ends up in thrift stores that looks old even if it’s no more than a few decades old. Cleverly mixing this stuff in to your décor can help you achieve the look of a home furnished with antiques at a fraction of the price.
8. Search Old’ ‘Antique’ and ‘Vintage’ on FB Marketplace. Don’t get more specific than that, just literally type those terms into the search bar, set a distance you’re willing to travel, and scroll. People are always selling stuff that they don’t quite know what the heck it is, but they know it’s old. Yeah you’re gonna see a lot of trash but it’s worth it to find the treasures.
9. Candle holders and candles. I’m actually pretty meh about candles, I get why other people like them but scented candles mess with my allergies and I don’t get any joy out of candlelight – but if you feel the opposite to me, I do understand and encourage that. Candles are wonderful décor objects if you’re going to light them or not. Always check the section where your thrift store keeps candles, there’s often some really good ones. And candle holders come in so many different forms that you will always find beautiful and interesting ones. A figural brass candle holder will make my heart go pitty-pat. You don’t just have to use them for candles either, I have a gorgeously detailed pewter candle holder that I use as a display stand for a large mother-of-pearl shell, and my pair of huge Victorian cherubs currently have clear quartz crystals sticking out of them.
10. Actual antiques. I have hundreds of antiques big and small. I just tried to remember how many of them had been bought at actual antique stores and I think the total is 5. Real genuine antiques turn up in thrift stores All The Time. Sometimes the thrift store realizes what they’ve got and will price it up, more than you’d usually pay at the thrift but still way less than it’s really worth. Sometimes they don’t know/don’t care, they just want to turn over stock so they price it at whatever will get it out the door. You CAN furnish your home with antiques entirely from thrift stores. It just takes time and patience.

Chapter 1: Mourning
An ongoing ProHero Hitoshi x F!OC fanfic.
"Ma'am, I have no intention of using my power on you. You can speak to us." The purple haired hero was assuring her grandmother, who rolled her eyes in response before spotting Takara. The mask on the man's face hid his mouth giving him an intimidating look that her grandmother easily brushed off.
"She can't, actually. She's in her mourning silence period. Don't take it personally."
It's strange how returning to a place can also make you return to who you were.
Her old room was the same - the green paint hadn't faded in the last 5 years, nor had any of the posters she'd printed been removed. Various diagrams of circuit boards were hung on the walls, some annotated while others were held behind frames and panes of glass.
Takara had to admit, she'd been a giant nerd. Stepping back into the room made her realize it all the more.
The room above her grandmothers' shop was dusty from disuse. Takara began looking for a cloth to clear off the haggard wooden desk in the corner so she'd have somewhere to work from when her grandmother entered the room, taking a seat on the corner of the bed.
Her grandmother's dark eyes were red and puffy - she'd been crying. The pointed tips of her ears held the same hue - An odd observation to anyone who didn't know Kiyoko. The woman's ears always displayed her emotions, no matter what she did to try and mask them. She had been crying a lot recently with the passing of her husband, Takara's grandfather. It had been sudden, but peaceful at home in bed. Thank the goddess for that.
"I'm going to stay with you for a few weeks." Tamaka told her grandmother, not leaving room for argument. The older woman's brows furrowed, the grey hairs meeting in the middle to become one angry caterpillar on her face. "I will try and make Ash stay out of the cupboards. I will. My work is fine with me working from anywhere, so it's not a problem." The silence that followed was expected. Kiyoko was following the old traditions of her faith - a month of silence was needed following the passing of one's husband or wife. The silence was to allow one to hear the goddess to comfort them where mortals could not.
"Besides, how are you going to keep the shop running if you can't talk to your patrons?" Kiyoko waved her hand in the direction of her granddaughter, as if brushing away the concern. "Well, we're already here, so you might as well accept it. You can't throw your grandkitten out on the street." A sudden crashing sound from downstairs drew both women's attention. Takara moved first, already cursing her kitten's ability to cause havoc.
"Ashen one!" The joy filled chirping in response let Takara know that the kitten felt no remorse for whatever he'd broken. The dark furred creature sat perched on a display table as Takara rounded the corner, pushing aside the curtain separating the living space from the stairway. A shattered vase of white roses given lay on the ground before the kitten, who looked at Takara with large orange eyes, proud of the outcome that his exploration had yielded. The shuffle of footsteps behind her let Takara know that Kiyoko had also witnessed the kittens antics.
"I'll dry them." Takara muttered as she scooped the offending feline, handing him to the older woman. Once the shards of glass were disposed of, Takara gathered the flowers into a rough bundle using an elastic from under the cash register to bind them together. The store was quiet at this hour, the sunlight cascading through the front window highlighting the warm tones the wooden floor held. Takara could see the faded sign out front blow gently in the fall wind, leaves swirling around the weathered décor. The store itself had many displays, most of which were on shelves built into the walls of the store itself by her grandfather. Some shelves contained oils, some herbal blends and crystals, while the far corner held incense and candles of all types. The scents all mixed together into a mess of herbs, wax, and florals that Takara found comforting.
Some called Kiyoko a witch, others a healer, and others still a hack. Regardless of the naysayers the shop kept itself busy. The stores' patrons swore by different herbals and tinctures that Takara's grandparents had been preparing together for 40 years, with some of those herbs coming from their own greenhouse outback.
Takara didn't know if her grandmother would be closing shop but knew that the decision could wait. At Takara's arrival the older lady had hung a sign on the door - be mindful of cat, do not let escape - warning her patrons of the new shop kitten.
Her grandmother nodded while petting the Ash affectionately. Takara, happy at the quickly forming bond between the pair, hung the flowers off to the side of a shelf where light wouldn't reach them to dry.
Takara had wrapped up her meeting early and began down the steps towards the shop area of the building. Her grandmother had used a broom to bang on the store roof beneath her bedrooms floor, a clear indicator that her assistance was needed. She hadn't expected two heroes to be standing in her grandmother's shop, their outfits making it clear this was official business.
"Ma'am, I have no intention of using my power on you. You can speak to us." The purple haired hero was assuring her grandmother, who rolled her eyes in response before spotting Takara. The mask on the man's face hid his mouth giving him an intimidating look that her grandmother easily brushed off.
"She can't, actually." Takara approached the counter quickly, placing a hand on her grandmothers shoulder. The older woman's ears had turned orange - she was annoyed at something. Probably her inability to speak. "She's in her mourning silence period. Don't take it personally."
"What's a mourning silence period?" The blonde questioned, and Takara for the impression that he was confused at the idea of silence.
"An old tradition." Takara had no intention on elaborating, so she continued on. "Did you two need help with something? I'm Takara, Kiyoko's granddaughter." The shop was empty except for the pair who stood in front of the counter. Ash gave a quick chirp, his only warning before launching himself at the cord around the purple haired mans neck, clinging onto it as though it was a toy. "Ash!" Takara quickly chastised, quickly dashing around the counter to try and pry the kitten off the hero's accessory.
Hitoshi looked at the kitten clinging to his accessory as Denki began laughing at the spectacle. Shinso pulled the capture weapon, and the kitten, up towards his face. He used his other hand to gently pry the kitten free toe bean by toe bean, earning him a drawn out meow of protest. The kitten immediately began purring once he was held in Hitoshi's hands, still trying to get to the dangling fabric. "I'm so sorry, he's a handful on a good day...." Takara apologized, taking the kitten from his outstretched hands and quickly moving to carry the creature like a protesting football under her arm.
"It's fine." The dark circles under the mans eyes were highlighted when he smiled politely, brushing off the assault he'd undergone. "We're asking a few local shops for a particular item. Do you happen to sell castor beans?"
"What? No." Takara was surprised by the question. Castor beans were beautiful, but incredibly poisonous. "That's not something you'd put in a tincture or lotion. They're certainly not edible Mr...." Takara trailed off as she realized she didn't know how to address the man.
"You can call me Chargebolt." The accompanying blonde man leaned against the counter, giving a wry smile that Takara suspected was supposed to read as charming. Ash meowed in response. The purple haired man standing next to him gave a pointed cough, causing Chargebolt to straighten once again. "And this is Mindjack." He added, gesturing to his tired, purple haired friend.
"I feel as though I should clarify." Takara looked towards her grandmother, who had not so gently poked her side, encouraging her to elaborarte. "We don't sell them, but we do grow them. They're quite beautiful. But they're kept outside in the greenhouse where only we can access them - they're not for sale."
"You just casually grow poisonous plants?" Takara's head looked towards to the blonde haired man. "Have you ever seen them?" Takara questioned Denki, who shook his head. "They've been used for jewelry making in the past for a reason - the beans are beautiful. Each one is unique. The plant is only poisonous if you ingest the beans themselves." Her grandmother once again poked her side as Takara rolled her eyes at the antics. "My grandmother would like to know if you wanted to see the greenhouse." She deadpanned, knowing her grandmother would enjoy the praise the view would inevitably bring on.
"That's not necessa-" The blonde - Chargebolt - was silenced with a swift elbow to the chest from Mindjack. "That would be appreciated." The purple haired man interrupted. Takara placed the black kitten on the ground behind the counter, motioning for the men to follow her through the backdoor into the yard. Her grandmother stayed in the shop, giving Takara a slight wave, signaling that she could show them whatever they needed.
The back of the building was a small, fenced in area taken up almost entirely by a greenhouse. Humidity clung to the glass as Takara opened the door, motioning the men inside.
The greenhouse was one of Takara's favorite places. The scents were not exclusively floral, but mixing with dirt and humidity. Cacti, vines, and bushes were contained in the space. An aloe plant which her grandmother had taken care of for 20 years grew happily by the door, welcoming the new visitors. The oleander was in bloom, the pink flowers contrasting with the various green foliage the building contained. The color contrast gave the building an exotic feel while still maintaining a cozy cadence.
"It's beautiful. Are all witches good at taking care of plants?" Chargebolt asked, poking one of the oleander flowers with an outstretched finger.
"That one is mildly poisonous." Takara warned the man who quickly withdrew his finger from the flower. "I wouldn't lick your flingers anytime soon."
"Why grow poisonous flowers?" Hitoshi questioned, looking towards the red headed woman. "Is it used in any of the products your grandmother sells?" He knew that not all things that were poisonous were deadly. A poisonous numbing agent could be useful for pain relief in some applications.
"Oleander? No. My grandfather is - was- from Hiroshima." Takara's heart sank at her own correction. "It was his favorite plant." Pushing aside her sadness Takara moved further into the greenhouse towards the back corner. The castor plant was kept mostly out of sight. She gestured towards the bush, it's formerly vibrant red fruits beginning to brown as the beans inside matured. Both men hung back, as though unsure if they should approach it.
"As long as you don't eat the seeds you'll be fine." Takara assured them. Mindjack gave the plant a quick lookover without saying anything to his partner. "Looks beautiful." He commented before turning to leave the enclosure.
Takara lead the men back outside and through the store. They seemed satisfied with the viewing but didn't say much about the plant itself, or seem to have any questions about any of the other plants.
"Thank-you for your assistance. Your plants are beautiful." Mindjack spoke to Kiyoko, who blushed slightly at the praise. "We'll be back if we have any additional questions." Denki added as the pair moved towards the shop exit.
"That was weird." Kiyoko waved off Takara's comment, motioning for her to return to her work upstairs. "Just bang on the ceiling if you need me." Takara commented as she turned towards the staircase. Ash eagerly followed, chirping his way up each step ahead of Takara.
And that's the end of chapter one! Comments are always welcome.

CREATING A HOME ENVIRONMENT THAT PROMOTES GOOD MENTAL HEALTH: HOW OUR HOME FURNITURE AND DÉCOR IMPACTS OUR WELLBEING
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, which is an important reminder that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. While there are many factors that can impact our mental health, one that is often overlooked is our home furniture and décor. The way we decorate and furnish our homes can have a significant impact on our overall mood, productivity, and wellbeing.
In this blog post, we will explore how your home furniture and décor can impact your mental health and provide tips on how to create a home environment that promotes good mental health.
1. Comfortable and Supportive Sofas and Chairs
Your sofa and chairs are where you spend a significant amount of time relaxing and unwinding, so it’s essential that they are comfortable and supportive. Poorly designed furniture can lead to back pain and discomfort, which can impact your mood and overall wellbeing.
When purchasing a sofa or chair, look for ones with good lumbar support and enough cushioning to provide comfort without being too soft. Reclining options can be especially helpful for those who suffer from chronic pain or fatigue.
2. Dining Room Furniture that Promotes Connection
The dining room is often the hub of the home, where family and friends come together to share meals and conversation. Choosing dining room furniture that promotes connection and encourages conversation can have a positive impact on your mental health.
Round or oval tables are better for creating an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, as they allow everyone to see and talk to each other. Choosing comfortable chairs with good back support can also encourage people to sit and chat for longer periods of time.
3. Bedroom Furniture that Promotes Restful Sleep
Sleep is essential for good mental health, and your bedroom furniture can play a significant role in how well you sleep. Your mattress, pillows, and bedding should be comfortable and supportive, and your room should be dark, quiet, and cool.
Avoid clutter in your bedroom, as it can be distracting and stressful. Invest in good storage solutions, such as wardrobes and shelving units,to keep your room organized and calm.
In addition to choosing a supportive mattress, comfortable pillows, and bedding, investing in bedroom storage furniture can also promote restful sleep and good mental health.
Having a clutter-free and organized bedroom can help create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, which is essential for restful sleep. Here are some examples of bedroom storage furniture that can help:
-Chest of Drawers: A chest of drawers is another great option for storing clothing, especially smaller items such as socks and underwear. They are available in various sizes and styles to fit any bedroom.
-Pedestals and side tables: Pedestals and side tables with drawers or shelves can be a great option for keeping books, electronics, and other bedtime essentials organized and easily accessible.
-Kist: Kists, also known as trunks, are versatile storage solutions for bedrooms. They can be used to store blankets, pillows, and other bedding essentials, as well as clothing, shoes, and other personal items. Kists come in various sizes and styles, and they can add character and charm to your bedroom décor. They can also be used as a bench or seating area.
-Blanket Boxes: Blanket boxes are another storage solution that can add functionality and style to your bedroom. They are typically smaller than kists and are perfect for storing extra blankets, pillows, and other bedding essentials. They can also be used to store clothing or personal items. Blanket boxes come in various styles and can be used as a decorative accent piece in your bedroom.
4. Coffee Tables that Promote Relaxation
Coffee tables are often the focal point of a living room, and choosing one that promotes relaxation can have a positive impact on your mental health. Look for coffee tables with rounded edges, as they are less likely to cause injury and create a softer, more inviting atmosphere.
Adding candles, plants, or books to your coffee table can also help create a calming and relaxing environment.
5. Shelving Units that Promote Organization
Clutter can be a significant source of stress and anxiety, and having a well-organized home can promote better mental health. Shelving units are an excellent way to keep your home organized and clutter-free.
Choose shelving units with adjustable shelves, so you can customize them to your needs. Labelling boxes and baskets can also make it easier to find what you need and keep your home tidy.
6. Artwork: Adding artwork to your home can have a positive impact on your mental health. Art can evoke positive emotions, spark creativity, and provide a sense of comfort and familiarity. Choose artwork that resonates with you and makes you feel good. You can also create a gallery wall with a mix of art and photographs to personalize your space and make it feel more welcoming.
7. Artificial Plants: Incorporating plants into your home can help reduce stress and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. If you don't have a green thumb, consider adding some artificial plants to your home décor. They are low-maintenance and can add a pop of colour and life to any room.
8. Lighting: Good lighting can improve mood, reduce eye strain, and promote relaxation. Consider adding different types of lighting to your home, such as ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. You can also install dimmer switches to adjust the brightness and create a cosy and comfortable atmosphere.
9. Rugs: Rugs can add texture, warmth, and comfort to any room. They can also help define spaces and create a sense of order and organization. Choose a rug that fits your style and the size of your room. You can also layer rugs for a cosy and inviting look.
Here are some additional décor items that can impact your mental health positively:
1. Scatter Cushions: Adding scatter cushions to your sofas and chairs can make them more comfortable and inviting. They can also add colour, texture, and personality to your living room. Choose cushions that complement your décor and make you feel good.
2.Throws: Throws can add warmth and comfort to your home, especially during colder months. They can also be used to add colour and texture to your living room or bedroom. Choose throws that are soft, cosy, and match your décor style.
3. Vases: Adding vases to your home décor can be a great way to add natural beauty and colour. You can fill them with fresh flowers or greenery to add life to your space. Alternatively, you can choose decorative vases that complement your home's colour scheme and style.
In conclusion, mental health awareness month serves as a reminder that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. This blog has explored how home furniture and décor can impact our mental health and provided tips on creating a home environment that promotes good mental health. By prioritizing comfortable and supportive sofas and chairs, dining room furniture that promotes connection, bedroom furniture that promotes restful sleep, coffee tables that promote relaxation, shelving units that promote organization, artwork, artificial plants, lighting, and rugs, we can create a calming and relaxing environment that supports our overall well-being. Incorporating these tips can make our homes a place where we can find peace and serenity, and foster good mental health.
