Shortly after her birth, Millie was diagnosed with cancer and survived another year before perishing to the disease.  Frank did his best to keep things the way they’d always been, but Millie was a big part of keeping the children fed, clean, and happy when he was gone. 

For awhile it was just Oscar and Emily at home, but it wasn’t long until her big brother was expected to join in on the family business. Her father died a few years later during a deal gone bad, leaving Oscar and Em on their own.  It was at that point that Oscar joined the military and the two of them began their own nomadic lives.  Emily had always moved near wherever Oscar was stationed.

The two resided in D.C.when the world fell. She was at work, inking a client, when her phone rang. Seeing it was Oscar, she nearly sent an automated text that she was busy and would call later. Instead she asked her client for a break and left them to relax as she took the call. His voice was rushed and had a hint of panic when he told her to get somewhere safe. She tried to get him to calm down, but was only left with a short 'I'm on my way' before he hung up on her. 

By the time she got back to the front of the shop and to her station, a lone infected had made its way inside and bitten her client. Now faced with two opponents, Emily had very little time to react. She grabbed the nearest thing she could to use as a weapon and ran back to the break room, shutting and locking the door behind her. It wasn't long before moans and banging could be heard against the door. She clutched the knife - a fucking butter knife of all things - ready to do what she had to if the door couldn't hold them. 

It felt like an eternity before the moans and banging stopped, followed by a brief silence before a soft knock came along with Oscar's voice. She rushed to open the door and crashed into a hug with him, only taking long enough to prove to each other they were fine. The two then headed off to get Liz, Oscar's fiancee. She hated that she was left to wait in the car while her brother rushed in to play savior. Time ticked on far too long however, and she soon disobeyed her orders, her decision to go after him solidified when she saw an infected shuffle by the glass windows. 

If it hadn't been for her intervention, she would have been the last Lockmoore standing. After escaping the office building they went to Oscar's apartment - the security of an elevated unit relieved at least a bit of stress. The siblings lasted there for almost a month before the building had been overrun and they were forced to get back on the move. They headed East - Oscar sure the cold would knock out a good portion of the infected. They took shelter in abandoned buildings and subways as needed and kept warm with small fires they set each night - although they were barely big enough to give light to read, let along warm them. But it was better than nothing and the two pushed on until coming to The Wexley's parking garage.

Quest For Glory III: Wages of War | Part 4

The Adventurer's Log

Time for Tarna tasks and I had a list: find a tinderbox, bring magic wood to Kreesha for the magic staff, bring the honeybird feather and Dispel Potion ingredients to Salim the Apothecary, visit a spot I didn't when I was last here and check in with Rakeesh if possible.

I went to Salim first since he's right beside the inn. He gave me some free healing pills for the feather! Unfortunately, I had to wait for him to make the potion, but hey, I had a list of things to do anyway.

Turned out the tinderbox was at the junk dealers, oops. I guess I forgot to actually try buying anything from them. I also went to get another waterskin because I wasn't sure if I gave the whole thing when giving Salim the water from the Pool of Peace. And while I was getting the waterskin, I bought a zebra skin; I'll need it at some point.

Then it was time for my staff. As soon as I entered Kreesha's home she sensed I had the wood and we got to work.

I was so ready to cast trigger. I had even saved after shopping. I was ready! Sadly, everything was automated and I had no control throughout this scene. Let me die in stupid ways game! Stupid destructive ways.

Words were spoken. Spells were cast. Staff was acquired. I'm not entirely sure what it'll do for me, but I'm a real wizard now with a staff, well a summonable staff anyway.

I went back in to talk to Rakeesh and Kreesha. Rakeesh spoke with Rajah again and still got nowhere with convincing him of peace, surprise surprise.

Kreesha has been working her magic but hasn't found any real evidence that there are demons around here, but something's been drawing her magic to the east beyond the leopardmen village. If she keeps trying to go further her magic gets drawn away from her. She thought there might a Gate Orb absorbing her magic. Gate Orbs open gates between worlds which would allow demons through. There were rumours of a lost city that far east.

I also asked about the leopardman prisoner and was told I'd need to turn him back to man to get information about their village. Ask the apothecary about a dispel potion; well I already have that well underway, but it's nice to find a concrete direction from the game.

I'd missed visiting the Temple of Sekhmet before.

The priestess tried to kick me out, but the statue herself spoke.

Releaser of Darkness, just a little bit ominous what with Ad Advis' body not being found.

Unfortunately, I could not progress this further. I needed a Gem of the Guardian and only then could I be weighed and judged. The Guardian I know is at the Mother of the World so I had another trip to the giant tree while hoping the Guardian would even be there again.

Since there was nothing else to do in Tarna for now and I was stuck waiting on the Dispel Potion that's where I went off to next.

I made it back to the tree with only one encounter! And I got a campsite in there.

How...cozy.

The Guardian was thankfully back and I could ask about the gem. They left several on the ground, but you can only take one.

If you take more than one they kill you for being greedy. Sadly, the death message wasn't anything special.

The way back to Tarna was more eventful in another encounter with the winged cobra things that poisoned me to death before. At least this time I caught that I was poisoned and fixed it. And THREE of the dinos.

At least I got a good shot of one finally. I fought two of them and fled from the third. Running away just feels like it takes forever and the battle music which still plays feels like a weird mix of monotonous and comical, especially while running. But I was running out of MP and yes I could have taken a mana pill, but I didn't wanna.

I made it back to Tarna and got my dispel potion. He made me go through payment and I bargained and everything only for him to turn around and just give three of them to me as thanks for telling him about Julanar.

He could've done in that first place...

I also told him about the Guardian.

He got excited.

He's quite something... and that something isn't a gnome. Siiigh.

I went back to the Temple where I was now able to proceed with the gem in hand. I was given something and passed the heck out.

I had to pick from a series of symbols based on what I was, what I am and what I will be and each time was accompanied with being presented a scenario and having to pick an answer about what to do.

And after I was told darkness encircled me and I would need to walk a narrow path to bring back the light. I was told the first part of the path would be guided by friendship. Two I've known before and three I'd set free and it went on to give me some hints about each.

"One thou hast brought low then helped to rise again."

"One shall stand thy rival and thy friend."

"The Sword shall cross thy path, and bonds shall be cut asunder."

"Seek thou the least of guides to lead thee to the depths of darkness."

"Two shall stand and five shall follow the face their greatest foe in a battle they cannot win."

"Seek thee now the highest tower to find the Door to Darkness."

All very prophetic and somewhat cryptic in places and when I was released I awoke back in my inn room. When I came down to get some dinner I was told the survivor of the peace mission, Khatib Makar'ram would come and indeed he did so once I'd ordered my meal.

He was not well, definitely traumatized. Their party was attacked. There were screams and claws but he didn't want to remember. He didn't want to die, didn't want to lose his soul. He was saved by Reeshaka who we know is missing or possibly dead herself.

He also said the leopardmen aren't really leopards; they become leopards. He saw it before. He once helped a young leopardman and he guided him to his village. They have claws though, sharp claws.

Which is totally not just misdirection when there's threats of demons around. He needed to go rest more and I had a leopardman prisoner to go use a Dispel Potion on.

I'm getting tired of random encounters.

Otherwise I got back to the Simbani Village and spoke with Uhura but she had nothing to say I haven't already been told. Then I used the potion on the prisoner.

Leopardman is leopardwoman. Kind of wish I'd done this in daylight to see better. Anyway, she wouldn't talk to me. I went to bed.

In the morning I went to speak with the Laibon and tell him transforming the prisoner.

She'll remain a prisoner until she speaks or gets bought as a wife. Yesufu, his son, has already asked after the bride price but he doesn't want his son marrying the enemy so he set the price high at one fine robe, one fine spear and five zebra skins.

Siiigh. Gotta say: not a fan. Feeling icky. But now I know my next step. I have the robe and one skin. So back to Tarna to buy the spear and the other four skins.

Bleh.

I went back to her and now Yesufu. He thinks she looks good now she looks like a real person. Again I say blech. But she spoke up finally.

Not much else I could do here so back I went to Tarna to shop. She can be my fake wife.

At some point, possibly just on the way back I capped out my flame dart skill at 300... too many random encounters.

I arrived too late to shop, but that meant I was able to get breakfast at the inn in the morning and found out that Khatib Makar'ram had been found dead by the river that very morning though no one knows how, so some bad news there. Things are escalating?

I also spoke again with Rakeesh and Kreesha told them about dispelling the leopardman prisoner. They also agreed on me trying to buy her to set her free and gain her trust. When I went back to the Simbani Village and spoke to Uhura she agreed and thinks maybe she could help bring peace.

In the morning I gave the price to the Laibon and now I'm able to take the prisoner as my bride.

Uhura was with her and she suggested giving her three gifts.

One each of beauty, friendship and trust.

She also thought it strange to think of me as married, but also not really married unless the leopardwoman agrees to which she vehemently was saying no. Me too lady!

I was able to give her beads, a fine dagger and the leopard carving.

Also, while I was fiddling about with my inventory I guess I never tried actually using the wrapping paper from Keapon's gift and it had a spell!

Which I couldn't look at because it won't even let me access my spell menu in the village.

Once I gave her all three gifts I could set her free but not until I left the screen and came back because Uhura kept stopping me saying I should earn trust first, which was very annoying as I had done what I was supposed to do but that made it seem like I hadn't. But then she was replaced by a nameless guard and I was able to open the cage.

And she ran away, but hopefully I earned some trust.

Back out into the wilderness for me...
