I'm fucking sorry, did they fully expect me to banish the Grey Wardens? after the entirety of Origins?? I spent that entire game scraping that order back into existence, no fucking way was I ditching them because one commander made a stupid ass decision

i get why ppl are excited about the idea of an origins remastered, but if i think about how it would look for more than 2 seconds i hate it with a passion like. all elves having dai body shapes, being forced to see the genlock redesign constantly, having to be face to face with a whitewashed alistair all the time. i just dont think i could do it

I commissioned siriusdraws to take the BIG DAMN KISS scene I wrote for The Way You Make Me Feel (also here) and adapt it into a comic. Word can’t express how happy and pleased and overall screaming fangirl I am about all this–I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. (Story that influenced comic under the cut)

Alistair vs. Cullen
It really annoys me when people act like Alistair and Cullen are the same character, when they are very different.
Alistair grew up with child neglect. When visiting Denerim, Eamon kept him in the kennels. At Redcliffe, he slept in the stables on a pile of hay. Alistair also recounts a time when he was locked in the dungeons for a day before someone came to get him out. And of course he also talks about how Isolde despised him, and “made sure the castle wasn't a home.” But is still convinced that Eamon is a good person and he deserved all that. Cullen had a very fortunate upbringing with a loving family who supported him and what he wanted in life.
Alistair never wanted to be a Templar; he was forced into joining the Order by Eamon. He is vocal about how much he despised this, and considers Duncan recruiting him for the Wardens as “saving” him from them. The only thing he says he enjoyed about Templar training was the educational component, which he did not receive previously. Alistair was a poor recruit because he frankly did not want to be there, and therefore did not take it very seriously. He saw practices like the Harrowing as horrifying, and deepened his dislike of being a Templar further. And as time goes on, he becomes even less of a supporter of the Order; he outright says Meredith is the biggest threat to Kirkwall in Dragon Age II, if made king of Ferelden. It was always Cullen’s dream to be a Templar, and would even force his younger sister to “play the apostate” for his “training” before being recruited. Cullen was an enthusiastic recruit who considered Templar training “all that he had imagined”, and “did not hesitate” in taking his vows. Even the Harrowing did not waver his devotion to the Order, which by Dragon Age II becomes downright fanatical and tyrannical, practically worshipping Meredith. (Though this was later attempted to be retconned in Dragon Age: Inquisition… just as poorly as all the other retcons in that game, taking the path of “just pretend he never said and did all those things!”)
There is a lot of dialogue from Alistair about how much he dislikes the Chantry. Cullen, on the other hand, is extremely faithful and the only criticism he ever has about the Chantry is that they don’t treat the Templars well enough.
Alistair has a good sense of humour—in fact, it’s one of his biggest coping mechanisms. Cullen wouldn’t know a joke if it hit him in the face.
The player can disagree with Alistair on every turn. He is presented as sometimes being right, and sometimes being wrong, like most people. (Side note: more than that, you can be downright verbally, emotionally, and physically abusive to Alistair. Holy shit, I didn’t even realize how bad it can get until reading through the dialogue in the toolset, because I’ve never picked those options in game. I was honest to god flabbergasted and very uncomfortable through much of it.) The player rarely has the chance to even mildly disagree with Cullen. On the rare occasion you do, the dialogue is painted as if the player is being an unreasonable asshole, and he never even addresses what they say. (Example.)
The only reason I think people are capable of mistaking them for another is because fandom likes to donate Alistair’s personality onto Cullen. That and the the ever-frequent whitewashing of Alistair doesn’t help matters. But I’m not even a Cullen fan and I think it’s a disservice to both of them to act like they’re just Alistair and Alistair 2.0, honestly.

As a Solasmancer, I don't think playing Veilguard is as rewarding for non-Solas appreciators as it is for us. Like, sure. You could absolutely go fuck Solas up in the ending, but what of the life lived before Veilguard? What of Inquisition's other companions? If you romance anyone other than Solas, I feel like those supposedly meaningful and driving connections are sidelined. What of a Hawke or Alistair trapped in the Fade? Not even a single mention of them, or a remembrance.
I get that we are facing powers never before seen in the world of Thedas, and that miniscule moments may be overlooked in the grander scheme of two fucking blighted gods escaping their prison but holy fucking shit, I would want to know what happened to other characters I have grown to care about! They made Morrigan's fate matter in Inquisition, to a degree - why can't it matter now? Especially when Kieran, a LITERAL PURIFIED FRAGMENT OF A CORRUPT ANCIENT GOD, may exist? That could've and should've meant something! Even the origins of the blighted lyrium idol did not feel as substantial as it should have!
And the Titans! Why are they a mere honorable mention apart from Harding's questline after all the set up they'd done in The Descent DLC? The people of Kal-Sharok! I would've loved to have so much more of them, of how they live now despite the Blight and under Valta's protection. Make no mistake - I enjoyed Harding's questline, cried really damn hard about it, but the story of a whole people lost and disconnected to who they once were could've been a much bigger plot point considering that there are two or even three races that share the same story. Modern elves, the dwarves, and the Qunari are such lost people with beautifully tragic histories that I wish were not mere hints, but fully (or at least, partially more) explorable areas in the story. It would've driven the choices regarding what to do with Solas even deeper.
I enjoyed the experience, though. I feel very vindicated with the theories I have long since kept to myself as well as witnessed others discuss within the community. It's just that, despite the rollercoaster ride DATV took me through, I feel like a lot more could've been done for the time it took them to make it. And I wish they'd had the freedom or means to do just that.
Maybe in the next games, they would.

there is a funny drama on twt, which my friend sent me and I want to talk about it, but im deadly scared of twt so i will do it here
so the thing is - someone said Zev is a rapist and other people got mad that they call him that, while also defending Oghren.
And honestly? Zev is one of my favourite characters from the entire series - probably second only to Isabela. I'm not sure if calling him a rapist is entirely right? He definitely used his targets and I think he always said that both of them (him and the other person) had the intention of killing the other, so it's difficult to talk about consent here. But you can't say he did not use his targets - he says it outright, multiple times. There is no denial here, as Zev rarely denies that what he does is messed up.
It's not there to show you, idk, that he is horny and hot (?). It's there to show you how Crows ruined this man, that his morals are absolutely twisted. He's not even defending it. He knows it was wrong, he just can't exactly care about that atp.
Oghren on the other hand? Without getting into details about his past, probably one of the most tragic in all the games - I want to remind you, that he goes on this expedition with you, still hoping that his beloved wife might be alive - just to see her commit the worst attrocities. He's already a broken man, when you take him to the deep roads and while you are there he slowly sees the only person he cared about for what she really is. Or what she has become. His world is literally falling apart as you go. Or the remains of his world. And pair all that with where he's coming from, the Orzammar that we know of.
You can argue, that Branka was the only way he could get his honor back, but he does love her. And later he says many awful things about her, but I'd say it's mostly a coping mechanism to deal with whatever the fuck happened. Because holy shit. Peak DA writing btw.
And now to Oghren as a companion - yes, he is a disgusting pervert. Things he says are often just sickening and tasteless and I can see how they might make you uncomfortable. But that's really... all he does. Almost every single one of your companion, besides Wynne and Alistair does horrible things - Zevran is literally an assassin and he used his targets in more than one way, Sten murdered a family that saved him, Morrigan is sort a sadist. All of those are incredibly written flaws and the characters do it for a reason. But it is there. All Oghren does is talk, really. There is also the part in which Oghren leaves Felsi. It's an awful thing to do (again, it's due to his insecurities, but it doesn't make it right), but it happens, eventually. And yes, it's disappointing that you, as a Warden, can change most of your companions for the better and Oghren still does the shitty thing. But the Origins companions, as I said, are supposed to be flawed and flawed in an unforgivable way. He's not worse than other companions. I can see how he is less likeable than the others, since they usually make up for these flaws with their personality and for Oghren it's the personality that is the problem, but saying that he is the worst companion, as in actually the most "evil" is just so... bizarre. And despite being less likeable he is well-written - although whether including a character like this as a companion is right, since he can make many people uncomfortable, is certainly debatable

There’s another person on here who’s recording a bunch of reread details on Aouv rn (you probably know who you are, hi lol) so I thought I’d also draft some of my own thoughts up about it 👌
So here’s some All of Us Villains details :)
I like how in chapter 12 of Aood when Finley and Briony visit the Blair’s, and Finley says that their family uses their code to justify slaughtering people they care about, Abigail immediately assumes Finley is talking about Briony, because she doesn’t even consider sending her OWN son off to a death tournament as slaughter. To her, it really is an honor to go and die for your family, even though it’s taken the lives of countless of her ancestors and likely would have Finley, if the tournament had played out as usual- most certainly Gracie or Ava if one of them had been the volunteer.
But instead she’s just like “dude kill your girlfriend it’s not that big of a deal”
But seriously she’s so delusional- the Lowe’s win every 2 out of 3 tournaments and it seems like the second most likely winners have historically been Thorburns. Like Finley had such a small chance of survival, but when he volunteered, her reaction was probably just to be proud of him.
These seven families are so mf delicious.
This one’s a bit obvious, but the Full Moon Child story that Alistair commandeers from ML.Jr in chapter 11 of Aood is literally just about himself lmao. You can go back and read it and it’s like “Don’t deny who you are because then your brothers gonna die ooooo 👻”
I love when these books do foreshadowing lol- there’s this moment in the first book where a succulent plant or something casts a spiky shadow in Reid’s face 😭
In Aood- the little blurb from the news at beginning of each chapter usually pertains to whichever pov you’re on, but the news covers Gavin so little, that his blurbs are usually about Alistair or the Lowe’s, because the average person probably just thinks of Gavin as an ad on to that crew. He’s just the Lowe’s sidekick lmao.
Hendry likes sweets but he’s bad at baking :,)
Isobel and Alistair have remarkably similar thoughts, feelings and circumstances in aood. One example is how they are both the most loved AND hated member of their respective alliances. Isobel is sent a trick spellstone that paints the world ‘cunt’ in sores on her arm (holy shit you guys she’s a fucking seventeen year old get a grip oh my god) while Gavin sights the curse stones they receive along side the fan mail as “usually targeting Alistair.” Whilst on the flip side, Isobel is the most famous champion and covered the most in the news, while Alistair has a dedicated fan club, who asks him to record sexy voice messages for them and draw him shirtless.
Man, fame sucks.
(holy shit you guys he’s a fucking sixteen year old get a grip oh my god)
Okay Gavin only says Alistair’s name once in the entire duo-logy. Like???? In his head he says Alistair’s name all the time (pretty much constantly) and in book two calls him “Al” all the time. But the ONLY time he says the word “Alistair” EVER is after he goads Alistair into burying the lamb’s sacrifice, calling out to him to apologize.
He literally doesn’t say the guys name the entire second (and longer) book lmao.
I wish there was a bigger fandom so that I could make a TikTok slideshow with that audio “how about I dance the black swan for you?” Accompanied by depictions of Briony cutting off Innes’s finger and get a billion likes.
Y’all WHAT HAPPENS TO THE LOWE SPOUSES? I know Alistair makes a joke that his mom ate his dad like a praying mantis, but fr- what happened to Moira’s husband and Rowan’s wife??? They were totally probably murdered right??? Rowan’s wife is actually never mentioned, but I’m assuming sombody gave birth to Marianne jr.
Also Alistair and Hendrys dad doesn’t have a canonical name- just thought that was interesting. Probably because it was a little…. “On theme” with the other Lowe names of you catch my drift 😬
I would’ve been in full support of Alistair and Hendry having long faces and genetic defects- but oh welll, I suppose they had to be hot.
That theory’s not even canon anyway- but how does your whole family line have dark curly hair, widows peaks and gray eyes for 400 years straight lmao. Besides they can’t exactly invite many outsiders inside with all that child sacrifice and oh my god that’s why they killed Alistair’s dad and Marianne’s mom isn’t it. Shit.
Marianne Sr. IS quite the fan of cover ups 😭
That’s probably it for now, but I’ve definitely got some more thoughts that I had a long time ago and have half forgotten now- so I’ll write em down if I remember :)
