Recommendations : Black History Month Films
Tumblr media
With Black History Month winding down, I thought it may be fitting to wrap up my focus on films by Black creators by recommending a handful that I have not given my thoughts on via the DOOMonFILM blog, but feel that they deserve attention nonetheless.  Some are streaming and will be easy to find, others may or may not require a little sleuthing, but all of them are definitely worth the time invested.
Tumblr media
Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life is Calling is the semi-autobiographical biopic co-written, produced and directed by Richard Pryor, the iconic comic the story centers around.  For all of his wonderful achievements in stand-up and film, many people tend to focus on Pryor’s tragic freebasing accident that ironically helped correct his path away from drug addiction.  With that in mind, it was an extremely brave choice for Pryor to center his film around this event and use it as a way to take stock of his past, the positive and negative impacts that he had on others (as well as those who impacted him), and most importantly, his choices in regard to all of this.  The end result is a touching, deeply-moving film with as much drama and deep emotion as there is humor, and perhaps one of the best films in the Richard Pryor canon.
Tumblr media
The Greatest takes a similar approach to the biopic, only this time, Muhammad Ali steps in to the Richard Pryor role to tell his own story.  The coverage goes from Ali’s amateur days and his rise onto the world stage via the Olympics to the wake of his struggles with the United States draft board, his banishment from boxing, and his eventual triumphant return.  The power of the film comes from Ali presenting us with the turmoil he felt having the prime of his career stripped from him during its prime, with his approach to celebrity and his choice to convert to the Nation of Islam also given attention.  While there are plenty of amazing documentaries that cover the prolific career and life of Ali, this film stands as the only narrative telling of his life as told by the man that lived it.
Tumblr media
Love Jones stood as an interesting point in the evolution of my appreciation for film, specifically in regards to my acceptance of how Black people are presented on the screen versus the greater public’s understanding of how Black people are represented.  As a fan of Larenz Tate, I wanted to seem him continue to stretch his wings and distance himself from the typecasting that should have occurred in the wake of his performance as O-Dog in the instant classic Menace II Society, and having Nia Long, Bill Bellamy and a number of other prolific Black actors didn’t hurt either.  I was also finding my way into the poetry scene of Austin, which added another point of connection for me to the film.  The compelling factor, however, came in a discussion with a former co-worker who found himself unable to “suspend disbelief” long enough to enjoy the film, and to my surprise, the “belief” was that Black people like the ones in the film do not exist.  I didn’t necessarily take offense to the statement (not on a personal level, anyway), but it was a very direct eye-opening moment that changed my perception of how we are perceived, even in the modern day.
Tumblr media
Of all the streaming services providing films that fall under the Black History Month umbrella, Criterion Collection has stepped up unlike any other.  One of my favorite aspects of their infusion has been the wealth of William Greaves films on the platform, but they recently added Nationtime, a documentary centered around the National Black Political Convention of 1972 that took place in Gary, Indiana.  Unfortunately, I’ve not seen this one yet, but I plan on correcting that sooner than later.
Tumblr media
Robert Townsend has found himself in an odd position of finding his relevance seemingly minimalized over the years, which is a shame, because the man is not only one of the funniest in Hollywood, but he opened the doors for many people that followed in his footsteps and eventually attained iconic statuses in their own right.  His debut film, Hollywood Shuffle, not only served as comedic fodder in the vein of Abrams/Zucker/Abrams, but it simultaneously provided insight into both the Black experience in Hollywood in general and Townsend’s journey specifically.  While his films like Meteor Man and The Five Heartbeats may have gained bigger fandoms, Hollywood Shuffle will always stand as his underappreciated cult classic until it gets the credit it rightly deserves.
Tumblr media
The debate on racism and its systematic nature continues to run rampant, so for those looking for some insight and education on the matter, 13th is a must-watch.  Many people tend to dismiss slavery as a thing of the past and act as if it has no impact on the present, which is its own debate, but 13th focuses specifically on how slavery as we once knew it has been morphed into a business via the 13th Amendment and the way it has created the prison pipeline and prison industrial complex.  All sides of the debate are given the opportunity to voice their stances and provide information as support, which leaves the burden of conclusion on the viewer, which speaks to this film’s strength as a documentary both in terms of production and social significance.
Tumblr media
Hood films were all the rage in the mid-1990′s, so it was refreshing (no pun intended) to see a film such as Fresh.  While many films dealt with the issues of poverty via guns, drugs and the like, Fresh was about a young man attempting to better himself by improving his mind, using chess as the vehicle for said improvement.  While the film did not create a boom in terms of Black chess players, it did let people on both sides of film know that hood films did not have to check a limited number of boxes.  On a side note, the film also has a banger of a soundtrack.
Tumblr media
I’ve always had a fascination with films that touch upon the Vietnam war, but Dead Presidents also touches upon the poverty that led many Black men into Vietnam, the struggles they faced in a war of ideals that did not serve their best interest, and the lasting costs that Vietnam left on many veterans, Black or otherwise.  Larenz Tate turns in a dynamic leading man performance, and the supporting casts comes with it... Chris Tucker, Freddy Rodriguez, N’Bushe Wright and Keith David all leave their all on the screen in incredibly compelling performances.  The cinematography is dynamite and visceral, the soundtrack reads like a who’s who of 1970′s soul, and the ending sequences are iconic in both visual and narrative strength.

Death of a Comic
Tumblr media
RIP John Witherspoon
The Death of a comic is a sad occasion, John Witherspoon is the latest to be called home. Today, many social media timelines are filled with quotes of "Bang-Bang," the infamous, "you've got to coordinate" and other pearls of comedy gold brought to life by Witherspoon's many characters. Mine for some reason is the underappreciated call of "Dar-by" from his character Loyld on "Black Jesus" and the legendary, "Hoe-cakes" from "Hollywood Shuffle" because after all, hoes gotta eat too.
John Witherspoon's Stellar Resume
Witherspoon's affinity for comedy began in the late 1960s, during that time he built a solid stand-up career and forged friendships with legends like Tim Reid (while he was working on WKRP in Cincinnati and The Richard Pryor Show), Robin Williams (also on The Richard Pryor Show), Jay Leno, and David Letterman. Witherspoon has appeared in a number of television shows and feature films including the Friday series, Hollywood Shuffle, Boondocks, I'm Gonna Get You Sucka, Boomerang, Vampire in Brooklyn, The Meteor Man and several others.
Genuine Human Being
As I scan the interwebs for Witherspoon related posts I think of the first and last time we spoke. Though the meetings were 18 years apart he was exactly the same both times, true to himself and his craft. Witherspoon, like most seasoned comics, never tried to make anyone laugh, he simply made it happen. The first time I met the Detroit native was at WJLB radio, in Detroit. Though it was 7:45 am, John had no qualms about finding the nearest liquor store, which I escorted him to.
John Witherspoon was Naturally Funny
We rode the elevator in silence until reaching the ground floor, "Well got-dayumity damn" he shuddered as jack frost whirled from an open door. He was dead serious but it was funny as hell. As-was the moment he remembered the stores' proprietor, "Mo-na" he sang, surprising the middle-aged woman by remembering her name, "You's shole is a pretty woman." What really impressed me was our last meeting in Huntsville Alabama, on his 76th birthday, when he asked about Mona fifteen years after the fact, once again noting how pretty she was. Witherspoon was a genuine human, if he said something, he meant it. Speaking of our last meeting, it was a bittersweet affair. John was performing 5 shows to light crowds in the dead of winter (albeit an Alabama winter), I couldn't tell if he wanted to perform, or had to perform. The latter was worrisome. How can a man who's given so much joy to others be forced to work in such a small town, at 76, on his birthday? Could anybody want to do that? I wanted to ask as we spoke but I was afraid of the answer, either was a heart-breaker. Did he need the money that bad,  . . . or the laughs of an audience?
Comics Rock
Comedians are the lifeblood of entertainment. Their stand-up routines humor hundreds of millions every year, as does their behind-the-scenes writing and on-camera performances. Yet, they're some of the most marginalized, hardest working, people in the world.  A singer can create one hit and live the rest of their lives touring the world and earning royalties (see Bobby McFerrin, Los Del Rio of "Macarena" or any old school artist collecting checks), an actor can earn enough money from one movie to retire (Keanu Reeves made 30 million for one Matrix movie), and most athletes retire by age 35, none of these things apply to comics.
Respect the Legends of comedy, all of them
Comics dedicate their lives to creating new content while living their lives on the road. They live to make others laugh without the promise of riches or retirement, rarely finding time to truly enjoy family or friends. Even some of the bigger stars are treated like expendable livestock by promoters, agents and clubs (not all, but most). Comedians are usually underpaid and overworked with little respect, and when they die the industry moves on as-if nothing happened. John Witherspoon died with dates on the calendar, as of 10:09 am October 30, most of those dates have been removed from calendars and websites. Some don't even mention his death. No RIP's, no tribute to his accomplishments. And this is a LEGEND we're talking about. We can only imagine how the lesser-known heroes of comedy are treated. Last year another comic who loved his craft and the laughter of complete strangers, died. Tarome "Cool-aide" Wright succumbed to cancer at age 47. While many gave the native Detroiter condolences on the web, few truly understand the grind and sacrifice comedians make to people they don't know. I knew Cool-aide and watched his career progress from his very first dates at "Coco's House of Comedy" to the many rooms he hosted and his travels with Lil Duval, he loved making people laugh. He loved to smile. We once crossed paths at a party completely unrelated to comedy, and he was still cracking jokes. He didn't have a microphone, wasn't offered any money, but he performed. That's the life of a comic, jesters for strangers. Anytime, anyplace.
Comedy is a Labor of Love
Comedy is a labor of love that few understand. It's about working day and night to find a perfect word, phrase or sound to make people laugh, then on to the next one. Whether 77 or 47 years old, comedians perform for the love of comedy and the people who enjoy it. Most couldn't walk away if they tried, and believe me, many have tried to walk away. Need proof? Look no further than Eddie Murphy, with a net worth of $120 million dollars (which seems awfully low for his resume) Eddie is planning a new comedy tour. Does he need the money or hassle of touring from city-to-city? Probably not, but he's doing it. He's jumping back into the world of Stand-up comedy because he loves the game, and smiling faces, and we should rejoice.
Support Live Comedy
We should value the genius of comedians and comedic actors before they die. We should appreciate them while their living, and performing for our benefit. Let's add them on social media and interact while they're still alive. Those who appreciate a good laugh should support comed before it becomes a thing of the past, like good television or great books. Comedy is the last bastion of creative thought, let's support it. Show a comic how much they've enriched your life or turned a grey sky blue, buy a ticket, enjoy a show.   John Witherspoon is survived by his wife, Angela Robinson-Witherspoon, whom he married in 1988, their two children, Alexander Witherspoon and John David Witherspoon, and comedy.       Read the full article

My mom/sis reminded me that 1 yr ago yesterday I premiered on Season 1, Epi 4 of @americansoulbet as high profile lawyer & civil activist #JohnnieCochran. It was an honor 2 embody Mr. Cochran & deliver a message still relevant today. Here’s my #BookingBackstory. I hope it inspires & motivate others 2 take action on their goals & dreams. Infinite thanks to...@azureetalentagency got me the audition in 09/2018. @gpierre722 allowed me 2 self-tape while working in Orlando. @diana_love_xo helped me self-tape 2 scenes, she committed 2 helping me make sensible choices 4 the scene, my energy & the time period overall. @gpierre722 again 4 the notes from my 1st audition & asking me 2 come back N the room 2 re-tape, but he allowed me 2 self-tape while I was in LA working. @ms_scorpiotiff my friend n LA, helped me get around while I was N town working on her film. She drove me 2 #Goodwill 2 buy business attire b/c I didn’t pack any. She also dropped me off @ my #TTGFamily’s crib w/ @jayfifty & @thepatrickwalker who helped me tape the audition a 2nd time based on the notes. These fellas looked out & gave me feedback that was 💯. Time flys by I get a #DIRECTORSSESSION callback for Wednesday 10/3/2018 N the evening. No clue who the director is but I recognize his voice when I arrive. I’m called n2 the room & it’s THE #Legendary @iamroberttownsend. I was HYPED! I grew up watching #HollywoodShuffle & his other projects w/ mom & dad. Robert’s energy was high & was intense, a great intense. He had me audition w/ 2 different actresses. I’ll never forget it! When we finished, he offered a handshake & said, “You have a great instrument.” I was humbled. Got outside, walked to my car praising out loud b/c I was GRATEFUL for the exp whether I booked or not. I had water in my eyes FrFr! Later that night I got the #CHECKAVAIL @11:55pm. Then found out I booked 10/11/2018 visiting my parents in IL. AMAZING!
