It is truly a 'Bicycle Journey across the Cape' and unarguably rates as one of South Africa's most scenic & stylish mountain-biking events. Between Me-n-u 🍔 @holdenmanzwineestate Cabernet Franc Reserve 2019 and Merlot Reserve 2019. The Cabernet Franc is tended to with care. @holden.gerard says their winemaker manicures the vineyard like it’s his back garden. This herbaceous wine is full of verve and while it is intense and sumptuous it has a tender quality to it. The Merlot, tasted in parallel is also picked carefully, @holden.gerard says that the winemaker prefers to pick it himself. This wine exhibits plum, forest floor and earthy characteristics. Pencil Case Shavings Scent is powerful in the way that it takes you back to a time and place in a personal way. @holdenmanzwineestate The Proprietor’s Reserve Red 2016. A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Shiraz from the farm in Franschoek at 14.5% alc. This intense, full-bodied wine exhibits cassis, tobacco and pencil case shaving characters. I would like to serve it with Pepper steak pie. A Wine to Come Back To @holdenmanzwineestate Barrel Fermented Chardonnay 2020 was one of my favourite wines at @winex_2022 It reaches right out of the glass and greets you with grace. I was delighted to taste it a few days later with @holden.gerard and @blacc_2016 With stone fruit and citrus characteristics, this wine comes from a cool climate vineyard overlooking the sea. A Persistent Finish @holdenmanzwineestate Chenin Blanc 2021, the current release was hewn from vines planted in 1982 in the Paarl/Simonsberg area. 12,000 bottles are produced every year, 70% of which are sent to Germany, the wine’s biggest market. 20% stainless steel, 80% barrel fermented, the wine spends six months on the lees. @holden.gerard says that this is to ensure a more reductive than oxidative taste. With stone fruit and pineapple characteristics and a slightly toasty finish, I imagine this would be a sublime pairing with mussels cooked in white wine, garlic and cream and bread smeared with all the butter you can find.
