“Another, Kageyama!”
“Right!”
Sweat dribbled down his temple, tickling his skin until the drop caught the curve of his jaw and slid down to his chin. He brought the hem of his practice jersey to wipe at his mouth swiftly before adjusting his stance once more. Fingers at the ready, eyes trained on the ball, Kageyama’s body moved on instinct to meet the flying object mere inches away from the net.
Fingertips. Air. Palm.
Another successful set sent to Hinata’s powerful swing, another successful quick attack. The orange-haired boy practically jumped for joy as he slapped his reddened palm against Kageyama’s in celebration. This was it - their hard work was finally showing results, their goals coming to fruition. Nationals were so close they could taste it.
“Alright boys, take 5. We’ll do one more round of laps before wrapping up with another practice match.”
Ukai’s voice echoed off the gym walls and bounced right into boys’ ears, who all grunted a quick ‘yes, coach’ in response. Kageyama wiped the sweat from his forehead with the drenched collar of his shirt once more before making his way to the collection of water bottles sitting at the corner of the gym. Strange, he thinks, usually Yachi is there to pass the bottles around during breaks. He does a quick look around and realizes she was nowhere to be seen - a pang of guilt hits him at not noticing their co-manager’s absence.
“Oi, where’s Yachi today? Asahi finally scare her off or something?” As if on cue, Tanaka inquires just what Kageyama is thinking.
Asahi looks as if he might pass out, most likely thinking he just might have scared her off. The shy ace’s reaction makes the team laugh.
“Nah,” Daichi slaps a reassuring palm against Asahi’s shoulder, “She just had a lot of class work to catch up on from being sick last week.”
“Besides, aren’t we supposed to meet another candidate for co-manager today? I think that’s where Kiyoko’s been this whole time.” Suga adds while holding a towel from both ends around his nape.
Tanaka and Nishinoya scramble over each other to pester the silver-haired boy into giving more information about the ‘new babe’ joining the team, but he reveals he’s just as clueless as the rest of them. Kageyama also wonders briefly who this candidate might be, another first year, maybe? He shakes his head - it doesn’t matter. Whoever they might be really wasn’t any of his business. Besides, his only concern at the moment was perfecting his technique in preparation for nationals. He could get to know the new manager once they reached the top.
“Wow, looks a lot bigger on the inside.” A soft, unfamiliar female voice breaches the testosterone filled air and suddenly all eyes turn to the source at the entrance of the gym.
Kiyoko stands clad in her usual black tracksuit, clipboard in hand, and engaged in conversation with the culprit at hand. Kageyama swore his heart stopped beating for a moment. Could a human being truly be that beautiful?
“WOAH, KIYOKO, BABY, WHO’S YOUR FRIEND, HUH?” Tanaka and Noya blabber in unison while Daichi and Ennoshita hold them back like a pair of rabid dogs. The soft giggle that erupts from your lips in response to Kiyoko’s annoyed sigh resonates all throughout Kageyama’s body, urging his heart to beat even harder against his chest - God does he want to hear that laugh again. He decides right then and there he would do anything to be the reason you make such a sweet sound, all for him. The mere sight of you doesn’t allow him to fully register that you are, in fact, still a stranger… and he’s been staring slack jawed this entire time.
“Woah, Kageyama, why is your face so red? And why is your mouth open like that?” Hinata innocently pokes at the awestruck boy’s shoulder and speaks with a voice far too loud for Kageyama’s liking, exposing this embarrassing moment in its full glory to the rest of the room. Yourself included.
Kageyama is quick to clamp his jaw shut and turn slightly with a pout etched into his lip just before your eyes land on him, face much redder than before. However, his reflexes weren’t quick enough to avoid the wandering eyes of the rest of his teammates.
“Ooooh, does the king see something he likes? A crush, perhaps?” Tsukishima is the first to deliver a teasing blow, adjusting his glasses with a playful glint in his eye. Yamaguchi can’t help but snicker at his side.
“A crush? Who would he have a crush on??”
“Isn’t it obvious, basketball head? The pretty girl he’s never seen before.”
“Ooooh! She is pretty! I can see why you like her, Kageyama!”
Death. That’s what Kageyama wishes for the most at this very moment. A swift death that will take him away from this torture. He tries to hide the mortification in his features as the team continues to tease him for acting so out of character.
Meanwhile, as you watch the scene unfurl before you, you can’t help the heat that rises to your cheeks and crawls up to the tips of your ears. Did he really think you were that pretty? This boy you’ve never seen before, so enamored by the sight of you that he just… shut down? Perhaps the tall blonde was right, and the way Kageyama was now avoiding your gaze was answer enough to your question.
Kiyoko once again apologized on behalf of the herd of boys clambering around Kageyama and swore ‘they weren’t usually like this’, pulling you aside to have a chat with coach Ukai about your upcoming training. Admittedly, he was unsure about having two managers next season but, Kiyoko definitely talked you up enough to convince him that it might not be a bad idea, what with the team’s continuous growth. Besides, it was fairly obvious the boys had already taken a liking to you.
Kageyama spared a glance your way while being put in a headlock by Tanaka, Nishinoya gripping his shoulders and bouncing around while Daichi, Suga, and Asahi stood by with their faces buried within their palms. Perhaps it was chance that you happened to look his way during that exact moment, but the second your eyes met for the first time, it was as if the world stood still and all he could feel was you, even all the way across the gym… and the soft smile you sent his way only made his body melt further.
Maybe he would make an effort to get to know you before nationals.

summary: on an evening out with friends, you reflect on your time with those you met at Nekoma High some years ago.
pairing: kenma x reader
word count: 1.4k
tw: none
tags: fluff, mentions of a bar, exactly (1) reference to a drunk kuroo
notes: AHHH MY FIRST FIC ON THIS BLOG!! i really wanted it to be kenma because, well, he is baby and i will forever be in love with this pudding head. the dialogue is fairly short so this is mostly me just spitting fluff between reader and kenma but regardless, i hope you all enjoy and i ALWAYS appreciate feedback. seriously, it means the world to hear back from you guys!! and big thank you to @sanemisthiccbih and @msbyslut for proofreading, i really appreciate you two! ❥
Your time at Nekoma High was arguably one of the most influential in your life. The memories laid fresh in your mind as if they had only occurred yesterday; the laughs at the lunch table as Kuroo made Lev spew milk through his nose at some shitty science joke, the few times Yaku had to tug on your hair in the classroom just to see you smile after receiving a poor, yet very undeserved, grade, even the time Yamamoto tried asking you out in the middle of the bustling hallway, tripping over not only his words but his shoe laces as well… you could still picture the way his cheeks burned bright pink as he promptly removed himself from your chest (which was conveniently his landing spot) and frantically apologized.
However, the moments you were most fond of were the ones spent with someone you had never expected to become so attached to: Kenma Kozume.
Truthfully you never noticed the boy until the second term of your first year, completely unaware of his apparent presence throughout the first. Once you met him, though, you realized how he managed to fly below below your radar. He was so quiet you could hardly hear the way he muttered his own name when you requested it, prompting you to ask him if he could repeat it and bringing a soft blush to his face. Something in that moment told you Kenma would become an important part of your life. It could’ve been the way your heart fluttered when he smiled softly, saying something along the lines of “No one really asks me again…”, or perhaps it was the way his eyes bore into your soul like gentle pools of amber, seeping through every crack surrounding the most vulnerable parts of yourself.
Whatever it was…to this day, you made sure to thank your lucky stars for that encounter, else you might not be where you are now.
“Oi! Y/N, quit gawking at Kenma and laugh at my jokes! You already get to go home with him!” Kuroo’s strong (inebriated) voice rang in your ears, effectively tearing you from your reminiscence. You notice Kenma eyeing you suspiciously once you finally register that you have, in fact, been staring at your boyfriend for God knows how long. Heat rushed to your cheeks and you smiled sheepishly before biting back at your rooster headed friend,
“Well, maybe if your jokes were funny I would laugh, dumbass!”
Your remark received a wave of ‘oooh’s from the group of old friends surrounding the booth you all somehow managed to squeeze yourselves into, and Kuroo’s now red face sports his signature cat-like smirk while the look in his eyes tells you ‘oh, I’ll get you for that one’. You couldn’t help but giggle as Lev smacked him on the back in a fit of laughter; the lanky blonde really hasn’t changed since high school, even after becoming a model.
None of your friends have, really. They were all the same stupid, headstrong trouble makers they were back then, the only difference now was the fact you all had jobs, careers even. In fact as you all sit there, in that dinky little bar on the far side of Tokyo, sharing drinks and stories from ‘the good ol’ days’ (as Yaku affectionately puts it), it’s hard staying in touch with your current reality. Everything just feels so… familiar. Maybe that’s why you were feeling so sentimental tonight.
You feel a hand slip under the booth and grip your thigh, right above the knee as the thumb traces the tear in your jeans, pulling you back in before you slip away again. The action makes you turn your head slightly to see a (rare) playful Kenma also painted in a slight pink hue, a grin tugging at the corners of his lips as a quiet chuckle slips through.
“Got ‘im good, babe.”
The praise makes your heart soar and a giggle surface from your upturned lips. You love seeing this side of Kenma, as he never really improved his social battery very much over the years. Such a problem is very easy for him to feed into with his gaming career, and no matter how many times you try to drag him away from his desktop, he always manages to crawl back into his shell right before you can shut it indefinitely. But nights like these are important to you two (whether he admits it or not), so you both always make a point to attend.
And you swear you can see that shell crack, pieces breaking away ever so often, with every crinkle of his nose or roll of his eyes, his shy smile never faltering.
“You ready to get out of here?” Kenma speaks again with a slight squeeze to your knee, but the way he reaches into his pocket already in search of keys lets you know the question was more of a statement. That social battery must finally be running out; but you can’t complain, peace and quiet with Kenma sounds like a dream right now.
“Yea… let’s go home.”
The way you said ‘home’ in such a soft, endearing tone made Kenma’s heart flutter in his chest and a swell of emotion sent every nerve in his body crackling against his skin. He usually handled this feeling well enough around you but, much like how you’ve been feeling, the sentiment in the air felt thick and put a haze over his usually level-headed mind. As a result, everything he felt seemed to increase tenfold. This did nothing but widen his smile toward you and soften the look in his eye as he grabs your hand, mutters his goodbyes to the rest of the crowd, and waits patiently for you at the end of the booth while you follow suit (not without rebutting Kuroo’s objections, of course).
Kenma had an arm outstretched behind him to hold your hand as he maneuvered you through the room, carefully leading you to the exit and huddling close as soon as you made out into the lamp-lit street. The air was much cooler than when you had first met up with your friends, and the twilight sky was proof of just how much time had passed. A crisp breeze sent a chill down your spine and you went to assume your usual position of looping your arm through your boyfriend’s while he walked with his hands in his pockets, yet, when you reach for the tucked limb it snakes its way around your frame and wraps firmly across your lower back.
Kenma must’ve seen the surprise in your wide eyed expression because his brow perks in question as your content smile shifts into a bright grin.
“What?”
“Oh, nothing… you’re just exceptionally soft tonight.”
You didn’t see so much as feel the eye roll in response to your remark, your eyes focused on the path to your parked car some blocks away. You only huddled closer to Kenma to emphasize.
“I really like seeing you out and about, especially with the group,” your nose scrunches as you pull the collar of your coat closer to your face, shielding your neck from the cold as you walk, “I know it’s not easy for you sometimes but… you always have that look in your eye, the one you had when you played volleyball with them.”
Kenma’s silent for a moment while he processes your words, trying to suppress the way they instantly made the corner of his lips perk up. He secretly enjoyed the way you cared so much about his social life. He recalled multiple conversations where you reminded him “discord calls and lobby chats don’t count as socializing”, and of course, you were right. He found himself wanting to see his old friends more often than not. He’s never been good at expressing it but somehow you just knew… and while he might groan or whine about finishing ‘one more game’ before leaving the house, he loved what you were doing for him.
“Thanks, Y/N… I had fun.”
The way your eyes lit up after that rare statement put the stars above to shame, Kenma thinks, and he can’t help but lean forward slightly to press a kiss to your temple. It was a small gesture, but… you could feel the love through the gentle press of his lips, and the way your infectious smile was finally breaking through to him against your crown.
“Yea, yea… let’s get you home before Kuroo finds out you’re being so sweet.”
