So leaves started changing colors and hockey class was only 2 weeks away, so time to finish getting equipment.  The Columbus Blue Jackets Charity Foundation holds an annual used equipment sale with proceeds going to the foundation.  The foundation does some amazing things in the community and this was a great event.  We were able to pick up a hockey bag, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, and jersey for under $20.

To finish, with my wife taking a well deserved "mommy night", the rest of us loaded up to hit 2 local hockey shops in one night for the final pieces and most expensive; the helmet.  Oh yeah every purchase was now times 2, Ms. S's twin brother was now ready to be a "hockey man"....$$$

To my parents, as a goalie growing up, thank you!  I now know why you bought a new air conditioning system after I moved out of the house.  God help us if S or Q decide to play goalie.

So I thought I would share a fews tips on buying equipment after all our fun.

Look for used hockey equipment sales through local professional hockey clubs or youth associations.  At this age especially the wear and tear on the equipment is minimal.

For "Support Short" that have Velcro to hold up the socks plus jock/jill we had to order through 2 different online retailers as the twins sizes were so small.  The XXS and XS are in small quantities.

Found the Bauer brand equipment ran smaller in size which worked great for S & Q.

Like previous post go to local shop to get sizing and staff is a great help for "new" parents

Some youth hockey helmet models retailers sell are not adjustable.  For a few more dollars the Bauer 2100 youth model is adjustable and better value as they grow.

In early spring retail shops tend to turnover their inventory for next season models.  Checking one store for sizing the owner basically said name your price trying to sell the youth items.

Ask local youth programs about rental equipment for financial needs eligible families.  USA Hockey support a program to help youth try out the game so may be worth asking.

Hockey is definitely not the cheapest sport but I have found it to payoff through my life's experience.  No matter where I have lived their is always a group of people at the ice rink that will welcome you to join in.
