Have you ever been to a professional sports event? Yes. I worked in a football (soccer) stadium and i’ve seen basketball matches. Also 1 hockey match

Do you like your wallet? Yeaaaah it’s fuchsia, the size of my head so i can carry everything and cute

How do you like your coffee? Without caffeine cause i get anxiety, also never any milk and 1 sugar or some honey

Favorite pair of shoes? My black boots or my sneakers

At what time do you normally go to bed? Lately : after 2 am. When I have my sleep under control : between 10pm and midnight

At what time do you normally get up? it depends on my day but lately it’s been around 11am

What do you prefer sunrise or sunsets? Both are lovely but I guess sunsets cause I don’t like being up early enough for sunrise.

How many blankets are on your bed? 2 rn but i’m getting rid of them soonish, it’s getting too hot, which is a shame, I like the weight.

Describe your kitchen plates? We have a few. Mine are round, white in the center with red, black and brown stripes on the border.

Do you have a favorite alcoholic beverage? Wine or sugary cocktails

Do you play cards? Sometimes

What color is your car? Red

Can you change a tire? My grandpa was gonna teach me but then lockdown happened.

What is your favorite state/province? mmmh Bretagne was pretty cool

Favorite job you’ve ever had? It was an internship, I was a production assistant for the live broadcasting of live concerts and I got to also help out with the technical things.

How did you get your biggest scar? It’s a surgery scar. I got my boobs guillotined :)

What did you do today that made someone else happy? I made a tiktok of me trying out ketchup and banana.

Canucks Twitter has never been more passionate, divisive and heavily opinionated; let’s go with an all-encompassing—vibrant. Any fan base is a community of people with thoughts to share, and luckily for others, content to create for a wider audience. I have to admit, I’ve been largely on the outside of Canucks Twitter, merely because I tend to direct my opinions to a TV screen rather than on social media. That being said, lately my sister, Pass it to Bulis contributor and Botchford Project recipient, Natalie Hoy, has been encouraging me to listen to more Canucks-centric podcasts. It’s been a fun time.

The world of ‘audio blogging’ has only grown over the past few years. Listeners are able to multi-task - exercising, cooking, cleaning, driving or on public transit - while plugged in to a new episode on practically any personal device. It’s a form of entertainment, often interactive, and a perfect creative outlet for amateur (and experienced) broadcasters looking for a new project. There is no shortage of podcasts courtesy of Canucks Twitter, a testament to the commitment and drive of fans, and the accessibility of the art form. With the Qualifying Round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs just about underway, there is much to be talked about. Let’s take a look at what’s out there.1

C4 Podcast

Founded: July 2013

Premise: The longest-running, active Canucks podcast (birthed from Canucks Hockey Blog) has been on-air for 7 years! Originally co-hosted by Chris and parody song creator Clay Imoo (@CanuckClay), the podcast offers commentary about current Canucks and NHL affairs, prospects, expectations, reminiscing on the team’s past (memories of the retired taco lover Eddie Lack and past playoff runs), and features interviews with guests. This past season, they’ve had Patrick Johnston (The Province), Satiar Shah (Sportsnet 650), Cam Robinson (Elite Prospects, Dobber Prospects) and Dan Murphy (Sportsnet) in the hot seat.

Aside from their cool, alien conspiracy branding, at the mic they cover a broad range of hockey talk with notable guests (writers and broadcasters in the media, content creators, musicians, WHL players, fellow blog/podcast owners, Canucks Autism Network). I love that they’ve started to cover important topics beyond the gameplay, like anti-racism, inclusivity, and diversity in sports, and have actively sought out the guests to do so.

Premise: The newly formed podcast has a light, humorous tone - evident by their inaugural episode introduction about their lack of social media followers. They cover quick hits of the Canucks week, roster situations, hockey culture, and of course, cap space. They’ve hosted fellow podcast hosts and media (Satiar Shah, J.D. Burke, Matthew Sekeres, Jeff Paterson), and even a fellow Burnaby kid, Massimo Rizzo. Rizzo was a 2019 Carolina Hurricanes draft pick. It’s clear they have a lot more to share, including takes in on their corresponding blog – see: How the Canucks Can Acquire Dougie Hamilton & Build a Cup Contender. I’ll read anything related to Dougie Hamilton.

Premise: Your ‘local hockey girl gang’ talks Canucks, sports culture, and soap operas. All 5 hosts have a significant following on Twitter and are bold and uncompromising, which makes for great statements and table chatter. This was written with only their Teaser episode released, but you can expect no shortage of pop culture references, fashion discussion, NHL wives and girlfriends (WAG) and pet content, along with team analysis. It’s trailblazing for a group of females in Vancouver to start their own podcast that’s hockey-focused, meant to be a casual chat amongst friends. They know the team, know their media, can gossip, and are having fun with it.

Premise: The group of 4 has created a casual, honest atmosphere with their roundtable conversation. They’re good friends, which equates to great camaraderie. They run a ‘contradictory’ fantasy hockey league and don’t talk ��fancy stats’ (while still being very knowledgeable). I think they’re engaged with their listeners, and relatable as human beings amongst their talk of Tim Hortons NHL trading cards, player safety, current signings and acquisitions, and Green Day at the All-Star Game. Reaching 7 years of consistent hockey talk and recapping the team’s evolution is a feat in its own.

They break down topics with great chemistry and perception - roster moves, Nikita Tryamkin, Olli Juolevi, and the Judd Brackett situation. Some of their notable guests include Utica Comets Kole Lind and Brogan Rafferty, and ‘bionic’ Finn Sami Salo.

Since getting back up and running, it’s full steam ahead – Zator has been joined by contributors from The Hockey Writers, The Canuck Way, college hockey newsletter Fresh Ice, and fellow podcast hosts. He has good insight and as a writer who goes into depth about NHL draft picks, the Vancouver Giants, and both the Nucks’ positives and negatives in his work, it gets noticeably transferred to the on-air conversation.

They’ve been generating healthy content during the pandemic, including a spirited debate with Minnesota Wild podcast hosts, discussing media personnel moves, prospects, NHL Award contenders, and the toxicity in the Vancouver Canucks market. In June, they released a special with hockey coach/trainer Jennifer Chefero, sharing her story facing sexual abuse and harassment in her career, while candidly discussing women’s rights and sports culture.

Premise: A tagline like “three guys from Kelowna bringing the heat and spitting the takes” doesn’t need further explanation. Appearing at the beginning of this season, the podcast (which features writers from The Canuck Way and CanucksArmy) has had some nice guests like the Canucks inaugural captain Orland Kurtenbach, retired centre and current Kelowna Rockets Assistant Coach Vern Fiddler, and Paul “Biznasty” Bissonnette. They’ve been nominated for Kelowna Now’s Best Local Podcast, and have a ‘Dudes and Guys’ segment where they pit 2 players against one another and talk it out (criteria is debatable).

They’ve also hosted local defenceman and last year’s 4th overall draft pick Bowen Byram, and hockey analyst/retired winger Anson Carter for a chat about the pressure of the market in Vancouver and the Sedins. Like any good heated debate, there are also trade and Team Tank vs Playoffs scenarios.

It’s laid-back and conversational, with mentions of farmers’ tans, celebrating birthdays during quarantine, and the school system strung across introductions. What’s cool is they record the podcast from near and far away places – Kamloops, BC and Germany (!).

What Are You Reading This Week? 10/13/2018

I am a fanfic hoarder, so I’m not going to list every one of the 240+ fics I’ve subscribed to and/or bookmarked. What I will do is list some of the ones I haven’t mentioned that are new or that are updating. There is so much good stuff out there! I can’t begin to list it all, and I’m still finding new ones I want to get to later all the time. I’m going straight down my History list to put these up.

One of the funniest AUs I’ve come across, and I’m learning how to be an honorary Canadian because the setting is so immersive! Hockey figures in, and Rey and Ben are Canadian Mounties. Rey’s brother doesn’t know she’s dating Ben. I laugh my ass off every time I read the latest!

Steampunk AU in which a lethal killing machine android (think Terminator) with no feelings encounters Agent R (Rey) who is trailing him. Then, quote directly from summary, “ Their meeting and cat-and-mouse game will unveil mysterious, dark secrets from the past.” Two chapters up on this one, but she’s updating once a week.

Firefighter Ben is severely injured in a heroic rescue mission right off the bat, and in hospital recovery meets Nurse Rey. Eagerly awaiting next installment! *I’ve also mentioned her other AU fic, The Lady and the Monster before, which is very good as well.

Vampire AU! This is a short 2-chapter fic, but that makes it a wonderful afternoon read or bedtime read.

Lilia is really gifted with verse; it’s almost more of a prose/poetry at times.

But this story is SMUT/EROTICA and for 18+. This is a “bedtime story.” I’m not ashamed; I like my smut reads! I can’t write smut to save my life, but it doesn’t mean I don’t like a spicy read occasionally!

So fun! So good! I really love how Ben Solo is written in this one, and Leia!! his mom is saucy - so much like Carrie!

Rey’s car breaks down in a small town and Ben is a mechanic with low self-esteem. I’m now up to the part where they are going to Finn/Poe’s wedding, I think.

Fast pace and funny, but kinda tugs at the “feels” too, which is a nifty trick to pull off. Subscribe!!!

My draw to this is the Jinns...I don’t want to get her background wrong, but Mouse is well traveled and her tales are like something out of Arabian Nights...but this one has a lot of #nsfw in it and Rey is in a harem - haven’t got that far, but she doesn’t use them for gratuitous scenes. 18+ ONLY - please don’t read a story that might make you uncomfortable if you are younger. I try to include a bit of everything for everyone, and I know I have some younger readers - would advise you guys not to read it.

Songs of Innocence, Songs of Wisdom by @cosmo-gonika

Her brief break to finish up that pesky PhD thesis is over and she’s back and writing Songs again with a vengeance, so rejoice! This powerful fic uses great original characters as well. Very sexy as well as great action sequences. Reylo hot, but also Reylo tender with “all the feels.”

Gladiator Kylo Ren - oh, I want to get back to this one and am sooooo busy this weekend! But the mystery and action of the first couple chapters I read was enough to hook me!

It’s popular, but again, it deserves the kudos. Very well written from my limited start on it.

I have TONS more I’m reading or have read that I could add, but this is long enough as it is! You can always PM me if you are looking for a specific topic and if I know of a story that fits, I’ll tell you.

My own fics aren’t listed here and I don’t read my own stories for fun, but if you want to check them out, you can see what I’ve written here.

But I admit I don’t hold a candle to the ones listed here! I just try to improve for myself and not to compete with others. Writing is fun, but so is reading!

Further recs on stories if you want them can be found @thereylowritingden, and @nancylovesreylo reads a ton and relogs updates on her blog, so it’s a great place to see what’s just updated, and she gives great reading suggestions. The Game Changer: pt.3

A/N: idk how far I’m gonna take this but it’s fun.. the song “Games” by Demi Lovato kinda inspired part of it, “high heels” by JoJo also but then life gets better don’t worry (it took me forever to write this because I had practice and then I was super distracted by Spider-Man: Homecoming)

A few months later (like January so I guess it's 2018 now)

(Y/N)'s POV

I spent endless road trips with the team, watching and trying to get my point across to Brayden but like most men he was still clueless. It was fine that he was clueless, it gave me more time to figure out myself but now I was over it.

So here we are, a day away from the start of the All-Star weekend, which Tampa was hosting, in the living room of my brother and his wife's house.

"Sandra he's literally leaving me on unread all the time." I say throwing my head back onto their couch "are you doing it back?" She asks "no why would I do that? I just text him till he answers." I sigh "maybe try I don't know, playing the same game." She suggests and an idea pops in my head. "Sandra and I'm assuming (Y/N) as well because her car is in the driveway, I'm home" I hear Steven yell "dude I live here with you." I say as he appears in the room "not the point. Speaking of is he still being a little shit?" He says "yes but revenge is a dish best served in front of the leagues all stars." I say plotting my revenge "revenge is what now?" He asks "he's leaving her on unopened constantly." Sandra says filling him in "Yeah I know I see the messages pop up on his phone. The picture of you two in front of the arena is still his background by the way." He informs me "mhm yes I see good to know. When do other players start getting here?" I inquire as I get up and join Steven in the kitchen. "Umm today why?" He asks "no particular reason" I respond "no you have a particular reason and I'm worried now." He says placing his hands on the kitchen island as I sit on the counter across from him. "Again revenge is a dish best served in front of the leagues all stars. Harmless fun Steven my dear brother, just to get him to see that I'm done playing games and he needs to make a move." I state "hm I see. So who are you gonna use in this little game?" He asks "who'd piss him off the most?" I ask "you could go Eichel or Matthews. Or you could really play dirty and go for Seguin." He says "okay Seguin it is, guess I gotta include him in on my plan." I say hopping off the counter and unlocking my phone to message Tyler Seguin.

Me: Seguin the penguin I need a favor and since you drunkenly hit on me and gave me your number the last time Dallas and Tampa played you owe me one

Seguin: alright Stamkos 2.0 what do you need?

Me: revenge

Me: okay not so much revenge but to get a certain someone to stop playing games

Seguin: Point?

Me: yup

Seguin: I'm all in pretty girl, what's the plan?

Me: you're at the hotel right?

Seguin: yes I am, I believe pointer is here too.

Me: He is, you're gonna take me out tonight, with all of you I know all the teams are drinking together tonight and we're gonna flaunt the fuck out of me.

Seguin: so I'm just a pawn in the game? I don't actually get a piece myself

Me: yes, thought I made that clear. Besides I've got eyes from every fucking team in the league on me and my brother is gonna be there.

Seguin: fine, see you at 8? Wear something pretty and by that I mean slutty

Me: hey!

Seguin: I know how to play your game, do it.

Me: fine, see you at 8

I lock my phone and decide to shower and plan out the best revenge look I could.

*later that night*

I pull up to the hotel to see Tyler waiting outside. I roll down my window and yell "get in Seguin we're going drinking". He runs over to my car and gets in. "Nice car." He says as I pull away "thanks I've had it since I lived in Canada, Blue's a beauty when it's summer here." I say focusing on the road ahead but see him smirk in the corner of my eye. "Blue?" He asks "yes, that's her name. Partly after the color of her and partly after the raptor from Jurassic World, which is one of my favorite movies." I state simply. "The more you know." He says "yeah well this plan better work" I say as my phone goes off "already is sweetheart Brayden just sent you a text." He says "what does it say?" I ask keeping my eyes on the road because I'm a safe and responsible driver "it says 'why did you just pick up Seguin from the hotel?' Oh look another '(Y/N) I swear if you sleep with him. You can do so much better baby.' Wow that's hurtful and you let him call you baby?" Tyler says "hey now you know the plan and yes I do it’s part of the game." I say pulling into a parking space at the bar. "Now he's just begging you to answer." Tyler says "leave him on unopened like he has to me for a week." I say taking my phone from Tyler and turn off my car. "Listen, whatever happens in there, you will not take advantage of me or let anyone else other than Brayden make out with me. My brother or one of the other bolts are the only people aloud to take me anywhere outside of this bar if I get drunk. Got it?" I say as I get out "yes mom." He says as he follows me.

I walk into the bar and immediately all eyes are on me. I hear a few chirps and whistles and then Steven shut them up. "(Y/N) you're looking, wow." I hear Sidney say "thank you but shhhh you're cute but not my goal here." I say walking toward my brother and Brayden, Tyler trailing behind. "Hey boys." I say "mind if we join you?" I ask knowing that they won't say no. "Not at all." Steven says as PK comes over. "Hello superior Stamkos I see you're still showing your brother up and looking better then him as usual." He says "you know it PK, you know it." I giggle and see Brayden roll his eyes. "(Y/N) can I speak with you alone and outside?" Brayden asks "fine." I say as he takes my hand and drags me outside.

"What the hell are you doing?" He yells "What am I doing? What are you doing? Playing me like you play hockey. I'm not a doll that you can just throw around buddy." I spit back "what do you mean play?" He asks "oh don't be dumb Bray. You leave me on unopened all the time and don't even bother to make a move on me. I am head over heels for you and yet you ignore all the signs that I've laid out for you. You have seen me at every little weak moment since I got hurt why wouldn't I be head over heels for you?" I yell. He doesn't say anything he just steps forward and cups my face. "Are you gonna say something?" I whisper looking into his eyes "shut the fuck up and just let me kiss you." He whispers as he places his lips on mine. His lips are soft and he tastes faintly of peppermint gum. I pull away and he looks confused, "why'd you pull away?" He asks "gotta breath somehow buddy." I say before leaning back in. This time, after a short amount of time, his tongue slides across my bottom lip asking for entrance which I grant. Our tongues battle for dominance as he pushes me against the hood of my car, hands roaming up and down each other’s necks and bodies. His lips leave mine and start trailing down my neck, finding my sweet spot. I let out a soft moan and he starts to lightly suck and nip at the skin. "Brayden" I say but it comes out as a half moan and he pulls away "what? Do you not like it? I mean I'll stop but I've been wanting to make out with you since like my rookie season so..." He asks but then rambles. "No you dork, because honestly me too but my brother will kill you." I say with small giggle. "No I won't just please use protection or I will kill you I'm too young to be an uncle and you're both to young to be parents." Steven yells as he walks past us. "What do you say we continue this at my place.." Brayden suggests "already ahead of you get in." I say rummaging through my purse looking for my keys.

*the next day*

I sit on the bench of the arena as the guys practice, well more like mess around. The boys just take shots and chirp at each other most of the time.

"So pointer did you get some last night because you're awfully smiley this fine morning" Auston asks him "shut it Matthews." Brayden says looking over at me blushing madly "yes he did, I heard my sister and wife talking about it on the phone this morning in detail disgustingly, since it was with my sister." Steven says and my eyes go wide and I turn a deep shade of red "HEY!" I yell "YOUR FAULT FOR CALLING MY WIFE!" He yells back "DID YOU WANT ME TO CALL YOU?" I yell at him causing the room to laugh "no please for the love of god no." He pleads.

The practice goes on until they all clear the ice, except Brayden. He comes over and grabs a pair of skates that I've had sitting under the bench for awhile now. He laces them onto my feet and helps me up. "Whatcha doing bray?" I ask him. "Well I know you've been cleared to skate so why not actually come on the ice." He says pulling me to the door "I swear.." I start "don't worry princess I've got ya." He says dragging me along the ice. We skate a little bit, well more like he just pulls me along. Our hands are interlaced as he pulls me to center ice.

"You know I truly am in love with you." He starts "I've been in love with you since I met you at that hospital 3 years ago. I know it's kinda a stretch though to say I love you but I at least can ask you this. Will you be my girlfriend?" He asks and I wrap my arms around his neck "Oui Brayden Oui, Sí, yes. In every language there is, yes." I say pressing our foreheads together. What we don't know is that Steven and a few of the other guys are taking pictures because this is a moment that should've happened awhile ago. "I love you Brayden. I know we literally started dating like five seconds ago but I love you with all my heart. You've been there for everything with my knee and seen me at my worst and my best. You know me probably better than anyone, besides Steven, and already treat me like a princess and I can't thank you enough." I say getting teary eyed. ★ Odisha Hockey World Cup: Dabangg Salman Khan To Steal Hearts In Cuttack Celebrations !

26 November 2018

Bhubaneswar: India’s Dabangg Bhaijaan is all set to steal hearts and jack up the glamour quotient in the second phase of the inaugural function of Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup to be held in Cuttack on November 28.

Confirming the participation of the Bollywood hero, officials sources have said that they have received confirmation from Salman Khan’s office. While Salman will be the main attraction at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, Shah Rukh Khan will be the star at the ceremony in Bhubaneswar on November 27.

The twin cities are all decked up and ready to host the glittering inaugural ceremonies of the Men’s Hockey World Cup that will be played here from November 28 to December 16. Musical maestro A.R. Rahman has also confirmed his presence at both the events headlining his performance with the official anthem for the world cup “Jai Hind Hind. Jai India”, penned by Gulzar and composed by Rahman.

In Bhubaneswar, the ceremony will also feature ballet titled “The Earth Song”, which will have Madhuri Dixit as the central character. The 45-minute show will unfold over five acts and has choreographer Shiamak Davar blending the east with the west.

To Do List For 2019

С Новым Годом! Happy New Year! 새해 축합니다!

Вот. Хоть и слегка поздновато, но хотелось всех поздравить. На языках уже хорошо знакомых и тех, что в процессе изучения.Этот пост будет мешаниной русского и английского, ибо мне так сегодня захотелось :)

А тема... большие и маленькие планы на 2019 год! Я никогда раньше не записывала годовой список дел, но будет интересно посмотреть, что к концу года все-таки будет завершено. Поскольку лень не обходит нас стороной.

Here. Though it's a bit late but I wanted to congratulate everyone. In languages are already familiar and those that are in the process of learning. This post will be a jumble of Russian and English, because thats like I want it today :)

And the theme... big and small to do things for 2019. I have never written down to do list before, but it will be interesting to see what will be completed by the end of the year. Since laziness does not bypass us as well.

1. Съездить на море. Go to the sea.

Я не была на море уже года 3-4. Будет приятно провести несколько дней под теплым солнышком на пляже.

I have not been tat the sea for 3-4 years. It will be nice to spend a few days on the beach under the warm sunshine.

2. Прочитать или закончить 10 книг. Read or complete 10 books.

Время от времени просто менять электронные книги на бумажные. Полистать настоящие странички будет замечательно. Дочитать начатые ранее книги тоже.

From time to time just change e-books to paper. Turning these soft pages would be nice. To finish reading started before books, too.

3. Дорисовать картину по номерам. Finish draw a picture by numbers.

4. Хоть раз искупаться летом. Go to swim in summer at least 1 time.

Река. Озеро. Карьер. Неважно... В прошлом году почему-то я ни разу не искупалась.

River. Lake. Career. It doesn't matter ... Last year, for some reason, I never went swimming.

5. Закончить вышивать панно "Времена года". Finish embroidering the "Seasons" panel.

Скоро будет Игра Престолов. По неведомой причине вышивка очень активно продвигалась при просмотре 2-6 сезонов пару лет назад.

Game of Thrones is comming soon. For some reason, embroidery goes really well when I bingle watched 2-6 seasons a couple of years ago.

6. Залезть осенью на сопку. Climb up the hill (mountain?) in the fall.

Хочу еще раз увидеть за дух берущий пейзаж. I want to see this breatgtaking view one more time.

7. Досмотреть половину дорам, начатых в 17-18 году (где-то 25). Complete half "Currently watching" dramas started in the 2017-2018 (about 25).

Да, я смотрю одновременного дофига. Yep, I watch a lot at the same time.

8. Снова сходить на хоккейный матч. Go to a hockey game again.

Наша команда в игре с мячом лучшая в мире! А вот с шайбой прогигрывает почти всегда. Сходить на оба? Чтобы честно)

Our team in the best in the world with the ball! But with the puck almost always lose. Should I see both? Just to be fair)

9. Посетить курс�� макияжа. Visit makeup courses.

И научиться пользоваться чем-то кроме туши и блеска для губ. And learn to use something other than mascara and lip gloss.

10. Сходить в театр на спектакль. Go to the theater for play.

В нашем городе я была на десятках концертов классической музыки, но ни на одном спектакле. In our city I was at dozens of classical music concerts, but not at a single play.

11. Попробовать экзотический фрукт. Try an exotic fruit.

12. Прочитать 10 фанфиков на корейском. Read 10 fanfics in korean.

Мне же надо тренироваться. I need to train, right? :)

13. Подобрать ноты 10 саундтреков. Make music sheet for 10 soundtracks.

14. Сходить на концерт в Платинум-Арену. Go to the concert in the Platinum-Arena.

Когда-то же я должна там побывать? I have to go there sometime, yes?

15. Перевести на русский 10 фанфиков. Translate into Russian 10 fanfics.

Моих навыков для написания собственных историй не хватить, а вот перевести... Главное уболтать автора :)

I haven't skills for writing my own stories, but translating I could do ... The main thing is to persuade the author :)

16. Купить 16 чашек кофе на вынос. Buy 16 cups of takeaway coffee.

17. Попробовать пулькоги. Try the bulgogi.

Но вот найти их в моем городе... But find it in my town...

18. Сходить в кино на 15 фильмов. Go to the movies 15 times.

19. Завершить 2019 challenge на MyDramaList. Complete 2019 challenge on MyDramaList.

Я пробовала в 2018 году, но не добралась до финиша. В этом году начнем с малой величины в 20 дорам) Текущий статус 2/20.

Мне правда хочется его попробовать, но дорогой, зараза. I really want to try it, but God, it's expansive.

Best Part-Auston Matthews

Hello this is the very first imagine I’m doing in 2018, and I’m super excited for you guys to read it.

“Auston look at this” you said while showing Auston a meme you had found on Instagram. This was the regular routine for you guys when Auston was home, waking up and Auston reluctantly agreeing to cook while you showed him memes. It worked for the two of you immensely due to both of you being busy.

“That’s not even a new meme (Y/N) you need to up your meme game babe” Auston said while smiling at you. You soon scoffed and turned your attention back to your phone where you continued to scroll on instagram.

“Babe I’m completely kidding” Auston said before kissing your cheek causing you to blush. Auston soon turning his kiss into a smile on your cheek before continuing to kiss along your face until he made it to your lips. The two of you soon making out in your shared kitchen until you smelt something burning.

“Auston oh my god turn it off” you said before Auston turned his attention to the burnt food on the stove. “Dang it, I put so much effort into that too” Auston said before you laughed and smiled at him.

“I’ll send a postmates for us” you said before ordering for the two of you. Soon completing the order and going to make coffee with Auston just watching you. This caused you to look up at him with curiosity and ask “what?”, before getting out a mug.

“I don’t know I’m just happy to have you, we can actually spend time together” Auston said before walking over to you again. You smiled and sat on top of the counter with Auston guiding your hips to help you. Which made it easier for him to slot himself in between your legs and kiss you once again.

“You know I really like mornings with you, it rarely happens but it’s a great way to wake up” Auston confessed before holding your hands. You smiled up at him before leaning into his chest and soon peppering kisses along his face.

“Yeah but I knew what I was signing up for when I met you, you’re Auston Matthews” you said truthfully. Looking at him with a serious face, hoping he’d get the message you didn’t mind his lifestyle.

“Also if you haven’t noticed we still get days like this and you’re pretty amazing at hockey, I say this relationship is a win win situation” You admitted to him before he smiled and let go of your hands to cup your face in his hands.

Auston soon leaned down and kissed your forehead before looking into your eyes, every inch of his face showing signs of contentment. “You know I don’t know why in the world I’m so lucky like with hockey, with the family I grew up in, or just anything else in my life. I’m happy with all of those things but I feel like the luckiest thing I’ve ever came across, is falling in love with you” Auston confessed.

The confession is something you really didn’t know how to process at that very moment, your boyfriend was amazing in every single way. It made your heart swell that he thought that about you though.

“Hey can we go out today? Maybe do some shopping or hang out with Mitchy, either way it’d be fun” you asked as you had an idea.

“Sure I’ll text Mitch right now” Auston said before going on his phone to text Mitch and inevitability get in the shower first.

“(Y/N)! Auston!” Mitch yelled at the two of you as he came up to you guys and gave both of you hugs. “Why is (Y/N) is first?” Auston jokingly asked as he pulled back from his hug from Mitch.

“Because she’s your better half, I have to say the best first” Mitch said before you smiled at him. Luckily your boyfriends friends adored you and didn’t hate you, like some of your other friends felt like their boyfriends’ friends felt.

“Mitch we all know… that it’s the complete truth and I’m glad you acknowledge this” You said jokingly before Auston rolled his eyes. “You two are completely wrong but I like you both so I’ll let this slide” Auston said to the two of you before walking into the mall.

“What are we getting guys?” Mitch asked Auston as he just shrugged and looked at you. “Whatever she wants honestly, I just came along because apparently she is scheming” Auston jokes before looking at you. You just shrugged and gave Auston your card before patting his shoulder.

“Can you get me some coffee babe? Mitch and I are going scheming without you” you said before sending him off with protests from your boyfriend before he just walked away with a huff.

“You got him to listen to you wow” Mitch said as he watched Auston walk off but not before getting stopped by fans. “Yeah I actually wanted you here with me today Mitch” you confessed before Mitch looked confused at you.

“(Y/N) I’m flattered but you have Auston and I have Steph-“ Mitch started before you rolled your eyes at him. You smacked the back of his head lightly before sighing. “You doof, Auston and I have our second year anniversary today and I have been wracking my brain on what to get him” you explained causing Mitch to let out a sigh of relief.

“So what are you thinking?” Mitch asked as he turned to you while walking. “Mitch why do you think I called you I have everything planned out, Freddie and Willie are even downstairs to distract Auston until we find him a gift” you explained as you walked into a store with clothes his style.

“What do you think he will like anyways? He has like the same but different style every single week” you asked Mitch who just shrugged his shoulders. “He’d love anything you got him honestly, he’s completely in love with you” Mitch said before showing you a shirt that you looked at in disgust.

“That’s so bad please no” you said which caused Mitch to laugh and just shake his head. “Let’s go to a different store” Mitch suggested before yo two headed around the mall.

“I have no idea what I should buy him Mitchy this is terrible” you said with your head in your hands. “Hey don’t give up, also what were you going to even buy whatever is with” Mitch asked you as you looked him confused.

“You gave him your card (Y/N)” Mitch pointed out before you shook your head and took out a gift card you put money into earlier in the week. “I bought this gift card for- what in the fuck” you said noticing Auston, Willie, and Freddie running up to you guys. Auston with coffee in his hands for you trying not to spill it everywhere.

“Babe here’s your coffee we have to go” Auston said before he made you and all of his other teammates run to the cars you guys took to the mall.

Once you guys got into your cars, Mitch going with Freddie and Willie, you guys left the parking lot for the mall. “What in the world is happening Auston?” You asked as he just showed you his phone.

It was a message from Babcock saying that the Toronto Maple Leafs had to go to their practice rink pronto. With that was another message that anyone who took more than thirty minutes would be watching the game from the press box. “Auston, you’re Auston Matthews and playoffs are soon. Do you really thinks Babs would think about benching you for any future games?” You asked him with confidence.

“I mean no but he’s all about sending messages to the other guys, especially this season” Auston said as he continued to drive and soon hitting traffic.

“I love Toronto traffic” you said sarcastically before putting on music that would make this situation less terrible. You started to dance and sing which caused Auston to smirk at you, the smirk only coming from him trying not to laugh at you.

“Cmon this song is so good Auston! I was sad 'cause nobody wanna suck my willy, Now I'm sad, everybody wanna suck my willy” you said before singing along to the song. “What in the fuck is this (Y/N)?” Auston asked you through laughter, you really did have a way of cheering him up.

“Brockhampton” you yelled as you paused before going back to dancing and helping Auston take his mind of what must’ve been an emergency. You knew that nothing really got him worried more than hockey, it was always an unknown with hockey.

There could be another lockout, he could be traded, or anything else related to his career scared you both. Yet you tried to be a rock for him to look for when he needed love and positivity.

“Are you done?” Auston as the song ended before another song you liked started causing you to yell an “oh” and continue on with dancing and singing.

Auston made it through 7 songs with you before you guys got to the practice rink where the two of you ran in. Auston going down to the locker room and you went to your seats next to the other WAGs that decided to come today.

“(Y/N)!” You heard Alannah yell as she waved you over to sit with her, Steph, and Sydney. The WAGs you felt closest to, you took a deep breath when the other WAGs started to show up and sit next to you guys.

Everyone seeming to get into a comfortable conversation, in the back of your mind you were wondering why everyone was here but you didn’t think much of it. That was until William came out, not dressed but only had skates on.

You soon watched as Willie came out with a piece of paper in his hand and skated over to a guy, who then took the paper from the opening in the glass, who then came up to you. The guy handed you a piece of paper and instructions on where to go next. You looked at it and saw a,

Before he told you that you had under ten minutes to complete everything. Steph yelling at you to “go!”. Then you ran off to the front where Sophia, the girl who was at your very first date with Auston, was sitting.

“Hello (Y/N)! I just need you to take these and then after that go up to Zach who will take you to the next part” Sophia said before handing you skates and then pointing to where Zach Hyman was standing.

“Zach what in the world?” You asked as he lead you to the locker room where only Willie and Freddie were. “Okay someone tell me what’s going on?” You asked as Willie rolled his eyes at you.

“Just take this and sit” Willie said as he handed you a jacket and a scarf while Zach laced your skates for you.

“Zach I can lace my own skates thank you very much” you said to Zach who now rolled his eyes at you. “Not as fast as me” he said before he finished and helped you up.

“And let’s be honest you can’t walk in them as well as us” Freddie said as he helped you walk. “Well yeah you guys do this like basically every night, but I can still walk” you pointed as he just shushed you.

“Listen we are just listening to our orders” Freddie said before you guys got to the rink and the guys helped you skate to the rink where you saw Auston with the rest of the team. No one really dressed for practice so you wondered why in the world Babs sent out that message.

You just made it over to Auston who smiled at you and once you got close enough he pulled flowers from behind his back. You got to him and the flowers, graciously accepting them before smiling at him.

“What in the world Auston?” You asked him before he smiled at you. “Babe do you think I’d forget our anniversary, especially our second one?” Auston asked you as you laughed at him.

“Well you forgot last years so yeah kind of” you admitted truthfully as Auston just agreed with you before smiling again. “Well not this year, I remember and honestly I’m glad I remembered two wonderful years with you” Auston said before taking your hands in his like he did earlier that morning.

“I’m glad you did, I’m sorry I don’t have a gift for you this year though” you apologized as Auston just looked fake hurt at you. “My amazing girlfriend who I’m just happy stays with me and supports me through everything didn’t get me anything for our anniversary? Even after last year when she got me the most amazing gift and makes me happy without one, how will I ever go on?” Auston sarcastically sassed you.

You smiled and laughed at your boyfriend, “so what’s all of this about Aus?” You asked noticing everyone staring at the two of you.

“Well (Y/N) you are my constant support, I love you so much and you are just my favorite part of life right now. Everything about you from never freaking out to mistakes made to just putting up with me is amazing. You are more than I could have asked for and even then some. Today you could’ve freaked out and gotten angry that our time to relax was taken away by hockey, but you didn’t. You saw it as an opportunity to dance in the car and make me smile, which you definitely did. I’d be crazy to love anyone else after you, so (Y/N)…” Auston said before getting down on one knee and popping open a box with a ring on it. “Will you marry me?” Auston asked before you stood with your hands covering your mouth. Shocked was an understatement and you wanted to cry happy tears right now.

“Yes Auston! Of course I’ll marry you!” You said before everyone erupted into cheers and the boys congratulated the two of you. The girls celebrating from their place on the benches, everyone happy for the two of you.

The yells got louder when Auston slipped the ring on your finger and kissed you. “See you didn’t need to get me a present, you being (Y/N) Matthews is more than enough” Auston said to only you as if it was a secret.

“How did you even find time to get a ring?” You asked with genuine curiosity. “We did go to the mall and it was perfect because I texted Mitch and he actually told me your plan, which actually went along with mine perfectly” Auston said as smiled at you.

“Well that was pretty much perfect then” you said to Auston who just smiled even harder. He pulled you in for another kiss before pulling back and resting your forehead against his.

“No you’re perfect” Auston said before he kissed you again, making that day one of the best you ever had.

ESC 2018: My story

Actually, I really like ESC but I extremely rarely become a fan of any ESC singers or musicians. Speaking about other years, this happened to me only in 2015 (Loïc Nottet/Belgium yeah) but he has only several covers (However,I still listen to Rhythm Inside). And this year give plenty of emotions. Honesty, I didn't watch Eurovision in 2017 because there were no broadcasting on TV (yeah because of the situation with our singer and Ukraine, you've maybe heard) and I had no free time.In any case, I was waiting for Hockey World Cup this year. Before the 1st semifinal I checked the participants list and I saw Alekseev (he is very popular in our country, I like his song too) So, I decided to watch it but I fell asleep. I didn't watch the second one because of studing. Then I made decision to watch Grand final. I manged to turn on the TV during 6 performance (Estonia) but it was a bit dull for me and I fell asleep for several items. The first country I liked was France ( I usually like France on ESC ) and I thought: there are no Russia and Alekseev today so I'll support France. And after that I so CZECH REPUBLIC OH MY. And next 4 hours I was listening to Lie to me (however, I rarely listen to the music with headphones ....) I was pissed off during jury's voting...MIKOLAS JOSEF PERFORMED EXTREMLY GOOD I HAD NO ANY WORDS AFTER IT AND YOU GIVE HIM ONLY 2 POINTS? WHAT? Alas, it was so. BUT HE MANEGED TO GET 6 PLACE (4) !!!!! I was impressed by this performance and all next day I thought about it. I listened to other his songs and really like them ( “Free” and “Believe ” especilly) because they have really nice messages to listeners. Besides, Mikolas inspired me a lot ( I had enought difficultiesand I was insired by the situation of his injury and his way of becoming a singer). He shows his life difficulties, even his belief (this is very close for me), people’s addiction to Mass Media and so on. Speaking about inspiration again, I wanted to have a career of artist but I leave this I idea because I was afraind of poverty that all the artists face at some moment (like a misician, sportsman or actor) Thanks to Mikolas and his songs, I understand all my priorities, great source of inspiration and so on. ESC 2018 CHANGED ME

Best rap, 2017

In 2007, I thought I was very fast. That fall, I was one of the top sophomores at the Minnesota high school cross country state championships, which, believe it or not, are very competitive as far as high school cross country state championships go. Then it was winter. There’s no indoor track season in Minnesota; I played hockey, like I had for my entire life to that point, but I also ran 60 miles a week in toques and gloves and terrible things called “wind briefs.” I got ambitious and decided that in the spring, I wanted to be the fastest 15-year-old in the state, the Midwest, maybe the country.

But in the first week of outdoor track, in the middle of a mile repeat workout we were running on the sidewalk (there was snow on the track), I felt bones splinter. There were stress fractures up and down my left tibia.

Every afternoon for the next twelve weeks, I had to find a ride from my high school down to a suburban YMCA, chosen because it had a reliably deserted pool. I needed to get in some sort of cardio with zero impact on my bones. If you’ve never seen someone water run, it looks like a recurring nightmare playing out under fluorescent lights: a skeletally thin person in the water, upright, making all the movements he or she would make on the track, but moving impossibly slow, back and forth, end to end. It’s like quicksand. I would sweat and strain and grit my teeth, but I was barely moving.

A couple weeks into my muggy purgatory, my friend Collin burned me a CD of an obscure album he’d found on a Wordpress blog. It was called Brokelore and was by someone named Grip Grand––clearly from the Bay, but we couldn’t find anything else about him.

It blew me away. I listened to it every day, to and from the Y, in headphones or out of those primitive aux hookups that plugged into the cassette decks in my friends’ cars. He sounded gruff and grizzled, but we had no idea what he looked like. (Eventually, Collin found a short interview Grip had done with a blog, but we assumed the press photo was of the blogger, not the rapper. Sorry, Grip.)

The record’s mostly self-produced; the beats have a little grit and a lot of warmth. Grip’s voice is tough, but elastic enough to bounce and bend and let the humor through. Grip is quick and witty, but threads the record with these incredibly earnest love letters to rap: "96 Tears” is an extended lyrical exercise, “Hip-Hop Classic” is the sound of someone pounding his fist on a computer desk, searching. There’s a song with Percee P (”Paper Cup”) and a song where Grip thanks Percee P for dropping that verse (”Showtime (That’s Entertainment)”). There’s “Handle That,” which was probably conceived as a parody of popular rap styles at the time but got mutated along the way and sounds like a good-faith alien transmission; there’s distortion and vocal modulation and lines like “While you pretend to be sick like Ferris Bueller / Grip Grand drop gems like a careless jeweler.”

But it’s called Brokelore. This was a few months before the financial collapse; this was Oakland and San Francisco and the shadow of the early tech boom. Sometimes Grip and his Rec League comrades broach this with a light touch, cashing bad checks and skirting tax forms. (One of the album’s highlights is the remix of “Poppin’ Pockets,” where Grip and A.G. (!) rap joyously about having absolutely zero money.) Then there are the graver moments: “Out of Service” is a half-dreamed conversation with a factory worker who’s in limbo at a bus stop; it’s tearjerking but never treacly. “Tomorrow” is sorrowful.

And then there’s “Love/Drama” which––this is not an exaggeration––is one of the most deeply felt rap songs I’ve ever heard. It’s structured as a letter back to a writer who ripped his last record, Welcome to Broakland. An artist responding to criticism looks defensive––and that’s the point. In the space of a few bars, the song unspools into a catalog of Grip’s deepest fears as an artist.

“My whole albums’s a jack: “Impeach the President?” Yo, how done is that? Tribute to early rap? DIY ethic? No, a piss-poor producer—take my name off the credits.”

The song wraps up with a venomous couplet:“You’re so astute brah, every minute flaw, you heard it / Can’t wait to hear your album, it must be perfect.” But he’s not brushing off the critic. “Love/Drama” isn’t about brushing off a detractor, it’s about scratching and clawing and stretching $10 in groceries for a whole week, pouring yourself into a record only for it to be...fine. The kicker, then, is that Grip Grand internalized all of that and made a masterpiece.

I say all that to say this: I don’t know if I would have found Brokelore today. Ten years after the fact, it’s ostensibly my job to find and write criticism of rap music, including obscure releases like this. But the economics of the media industry are strange: while it seems clear that people still want to discover new music, it’s difficult to get anybody to click on articles that present it. Music discovery has moved mostly to the curated playlists at streaming sites (so, radio) and there are fewer and fewer places willing to publish full-scale album reviews for artists who are untested or unsigned. I don’t spend enough time in pools.

Of course, there are still massive communities of rap fans who dig for new material. But as it becomes more difficult to make a living covering it––and with the collapse of the blog world, which was invaluable for fans and artists in the mid- and late-2000s––there’s less time and attention given to smaller artists. Especially the kinds of time and attention that can be turned into money. (On that count, I physically recoil imagining how much bleaker the Bay Grip rendered on Brokelore has gotten.)

The good news is that rap is in an exceptional place right now. There are vibrant underground scenes in cities across the country. In 2018, I’m resolving to take time, stay still, and appreciate rappers who would otherwise go uncovered.

Notes/methodology: This list, obviously, includes both songs and albums. In most of the cases where either an album or a song from it could have made my top sixty, I chose whichever entry would rank higher, i.e.- I think “The Story of O.J.” is one of the ten best rap things from this year, while 4:44 as an album would rank a couple dozen spots lower. There are exceptions. “We Ball” would probably be among my top ten entries, but I wanted to give a nod to Meek Mill’s album because it hasn’t left rotation since it came out. Similar case with Boosie: “Webbie I Remember” could easily be in my top five, but BooPac should be on everyone’s radar, even if it’s ninety minutes. Slow down.

Madhuri Dixit To Perform At Hockey World Cup Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018 is definitely going to be a mega-event which the people of Odisha will remember for years as noted Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit will also perform at Kalinga Stadium here on November 27.

According to media reports, Madhuri Dixit will perform a dance ballad along with 1100 artists from across the world to highlight the message of the power of a united world with the theme of “The Earth Song” is ‘Oneness of humanity’.

Madhuri will play the Mother Earth during the 40-minute long performance which has been directed and written by Nupur Mahajan.

The opening ceremony will also see the culmination of the campaign ‘HeartBeatsFor Hockey’, with Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan presenting the collected heartbeats of India to the 16 captains.

Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician A.R. Rahman is slated to perform the official song ‘Jai India’ and some of his other memorable compositions including the Oscar-winning song ‘Jai Ho’ during the 90-minute long ceremony.

A former NHL agitator is fighting the league over the dangers of head trauma in hockey

The two-time Stanley Cup champion is calling out the NHL for failing to protect its players and educate them about the risks of head trauma.

Dan Carcillo retired from the NHL three years ago at the age of 30. During his nine-year career, he was one of hockey’s most notorious agitators. You loved him when he was wearing your team’s jersey and loved to hate him when he wasn’t. But now the player who earned nine career suspensions is trying to make a different kind of impact. He is speaking out about the dangers of concussions and calling on the NHL to do more to protect and educate its players.

The NHL reached a tentative non-class settlement in November in a lawsuit brought by more than 100 retired players, including Carcillo. The lawsuit alleged NHL negligence in the treatment of head injuries and also claimed that the league withheld information on the long-term risks of head trauma associated with playing hockey. The agreement included payments that cannot exceed $18.92 million in total, but did not require the NHL to admit liability for any of the plaintiffs’ claims. Carcillo says he will opt out to continue his fight for accountability.

From Agitator to Advocate

The mission to change the way the hockey world and the general public think about concussions, traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is personal for the two-time Stanley Cup winner.

It began on Feb. 15, 2015 when Steve Montador passed away at age 35, three years removed from an 11-year NHL career. Montador and Carcillo became teammates in Chicago in 2011 and the two men bonded over struggles with addiction. Carcillo credits Montador with helping him live a sober life and calls him his best friend in hockey. The presence of CTE was discovered posthumously in Montador by the Canadian Sports Concussion Project. He was the fifth former NHL player to be diagnosed with it.

“[He’s] the reason I’m an advocate,” Carcillo told SB Nation. “The day that I got the phone call on Feb. 15, it was a day before a game. My phone had been ringing off the hook and my son had been born in November, so I was worried it had something to do with that. When I picked up it was a friend and she was crying hysterically saying that Steve was gone.”

Just one month after Montador’s death, Carcillo played in what would ultimately be his last game before sitting out the remainder of the season after being diagnosed with concussion-like symptoms. In April 2015, he published a heartfelt video on The Players’ Tribune discussing his friend’s passing.

”When you have a concussion, and you go through that, it’s a dark, dark place,” Carcillo said in the video. “I just recently had one. I fell into a lull, into a depression, especially after Monty’s passing.”

In September 2015, Carcillo announced his retirement in The Players’ Tribune. In that essay, he announced he was establishing the Chapter 5 Foundation along with his wife, Ela, to help players transition to life after hockey. His openness captured the sport’s attention. More than three years later, he still has it.

In May 2018, Carcillo pledged his brain to the Carrick Institute, an institution he credits with saving his life twice over, for further study into the consequences of traumatic brain injury. A month later, The Players’ Tribune published a video in which Carcillo discussed his feeling that the NHL is failing players by not embracing all available concussion treatment options. His doctor told The New York Times in November that Carcillo suffered seven diagnosed concussions during his career. All the while, his Twitter feed has been filled with advocacy for concussion treatment and mental health awareness, as well as song lyrics, his thoughts on suspensions, and other NHL news.

“Treatment is available and you can optimize yourself,” Carcillo said when asked about the message he hopes to impart. “It can save your life.”

Accountability

Within months of publishing his first testimonial with The Players’ Tribune, Carcillo joined the list of NHL players suing the league over brain injuries suffered during their playing careers and the lack of warnings over the risks of head trauma.

“I was held accountable for my actions in the league — if I was late or if I played outside of the rules I got suspended, I got fined, and I took it. They held me accountable. And now that’s all I’m trying to do [with] these guys, who are responsible for lying to us.”

The NHL introduced a “Concussion Evaluation and Management Protocol” for teams to follow before the 2016-17 season, but Carcillo has not been alone in finding it inadequate. Intended to help teams with education, testing, identification, evaluation, and management of concussions, it has been scrutinized ever since it was implemented. Prominent among the perceived shortcomings of the system are the use of spotters in the stands to identify players showing signs of head trauma, the way that tests determining a player’s eligibility to return can be manipulated, and the lack of updated education around the long-term impacts of head trauma, including CTE.

“They could have shown us a slideshow on the risks of getting hit in the head with a bare knuckle if it’s for fighters,” Carcillo said of even the minimal things he believed the league could have done for players entering the league. “They could have shown superstars a video of Crosby getting those concussions.”

Another related issue that frustrates Carcillo when it comes to the NHL’s treatment of players suffering from concussions – and one that was raised during the lawsuit – is the potentially dangerous way medications are prescribed to players by doctors. Jeffrey Kutcher, a neuropsychologist who has treated NHL players with concussion-related problems and consulted with the the NHLPA, stated that he has seen instances where NHL players have been prescribed antidepressants; amantadine, a drug that Kutcher said is typically administered to patients with conditions such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease; and in rare cases opioids to deal concussion symptoms.

“Once you go down this rabbit hole,” Carcillo said, “it’s really disgusting, you know, the way that they treat human beings, the way that they treat kids.”

Throughout his tenure as NHL commissioner, Gary Bettman has been dismissive of any potential link between hockey and the long-term effects of head injuries that can be caused from playing, including CTE. Meanwhile, numerous research groups — including Boston University, the Brain Injury Research Institute, and National Institute of Health — have conducted studies showing links between contact sports and CTE. Boston University and the Brain Injury Research Institute, among others, have done work with hockey specifically, including examining the brains of deceased former NHL players.

As recently as April 2018, Bettman said during a radio interview that scientists “don’t have enough evidence to reach any conclusions” that hockey and CTE are linked. Bettman was answering a question about the research being conducted at Boston University by neuropathologist Dr. Ann McKee. She responded to his comment, noting that he was citing a conversation in 2012 when the sample size for the study was small.

“However, it is misleading for Mr. Bettman to say we haven’t reached any conclusions,” she said, via TSN. “The evidence clearly supports that CTE is associated with ice hockey play. Since that 2012 meeting with Mr. Bettman, the VA-BU-CLF [Veterans Affairs-Boston University-Concussion Legacy Foundation] research team has identified CTE in more ice hockey players, including four amateur hockey players, not all of whom had significant fighting exposure. This provides evidence that normal ice hockey head impact exposure can be associated with CTE.”

For Carcillo, there can be no meaningful change until a connection between hockey and CTE is conceded by the league and the long-term dangers of head injuries are explained to its players.

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons defines a traumatic brain injury as “a blow or jolt to the head or a penetrating head injury that disrupts the normal function of the brain. TBI can result when the head suddenly and violently hits an object, or when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.”

Carcillo looks at hockey and sees that risk everywhere on the ice.

“That’s a stick to the face, a crank of the brain stem, a puck to the face, your teeth get knocked out, a hard hit to the body, an unsuspecting check that isn’t a very hard hit,” he said.

Carcillo’s frustrations stem from the fact that these risks were not disclosed to players.

“All of these things that I have learned should have been fucking told to me,” Carcillo continued. “They never were, and that’s where my issue comes in. You’re risking people’s lives.”

Changing the Culture

Carcillo cringes when he shares the following story, but he also gets angry. As a player, he knew how to game the ImPACT test – the evaluation of brain function used to determine when a player could return to the ice after suffering a concussion. According to Carcillo, the key was performing poorly on the test during training camp that will be used as a baseline to compare against during the season.

“The number one symptom of a concussion is feeling foggy or slowed down,” he said. “So what do you do? You’ve seen that test, you’ve seen it every year. You know that you’re going to be a little foggy or slow, so you bomb it at the beginning of the year on purpose so that you can pass it if you do happen to get injured. That way, you can come back sooner.”

Whether motivated by a play-through-anything ethos or fear of losing a job while off the ice, players attempting to return too soon or under-reporting concussion symptoms is damaging to their future. Carcillo’s opinion is that team doctors can’t be trusted to make the players’ interests a priority when it comes to recovery timetables.

“That narrative is so old and so tired,” Carcillo said. “Telling kids and convincing kids to put themselves at risk — promoting violence and hitting and fighting, and that playing in pain is okay. To me, yes, playing in pain, sacrificing your body as an athlete that’s part of it, but it shouldn’t be advertised as such.”

“All of these things that I have learned should have been fucking told to me,” Carcillo continued. “They never were, and that’s where my issue comes in. You’re risking people’s lives.”

NHL players have been portrayed and promoted as warriors for playing through injuries. Patrice Bergeron was commended after playing with a separated shoulder, torn cartilage, and a broken rib that punctured his lung in the 2013 Stanley Cup Final. Joe Thornton, according to his head coach, was courageous for playing through a torn MCL and ACL in the 2017 playoffs.

As Carcillo, who spent time with five teams during his career, sees it, the outdated views about playing through physical injury also make talking about mental health a taboo in locker rooms.

“[The word] ‘concussion’ was never used, even by the doctors, he said. “Mental health was never talked about,” Carcillo said.

Carcillo became uncomfortable being open about mental health issues during his career after speaking with a mental health expert provided by the Blackhawks. He says he later “found out through the grapevine” that the front office was informed of the conversation. Carcillo did not specify what information might have been shared, but shared his opinion on the impact of such a dynamic.

“That’s the stigma behind mental health,” he said. “When you come out and ask for help — especially in a job where you need to be seen as mentally tough, a mental warrior, a mental assassin — you’re having anxiety or depression, and god forbid you tell somebody, and then they go break your confidence like that. It doesn’t bode well for somebody else to come and open up. When in reality, opening up and getting that off your chest makes you more singularly focused at doing your job on the ice — so that actually makes you a better athlete, so guys shouldn’t be scared of it.”

While the players embody the NHL’s warrior mentality, Carcillo sees the league’s leadership as the group who can catalyze meaningful change.

“You need to understand who is running the NHL. You need to take a look at Colin Campbell, Gary Bettman, Bill Daly, and the guys at the PA,” Carcillo said. “All of this old school, old boys’ club, old mentality of ‘if you’re not tough, you’re a you-know-what’ and this ‘oh my God, you’re hurt so we can play hurt’ and ‘you’re a warrior now, thank you for putting your brain and body at risk for the good of the team.’ Fuck that.”

On the same day that the NHL’s lawsuit settlement with former player was announced, Bettman was inducted into the Hall of Fame as a builder.

“It’s another scheme to get your mind off of what’s really going on,” Carcillo said of Bettman’s induction, “and what’s really going on is that the NHL is putting human beings in a really, really bad position by not treating head trauma.”

While the NHL has not accepted that a link exists between hockey and the long-term impacts of head trauma, for players like Carcillo and Montador, the effects are all too real to dismiss. That lack of acceptance, paired with Carcillo’s belief that the NHL has not done enough to educate and assist players about head injuries, has led to consequences that he feels should be on the NHL’s conscience. “It’s simple. If you look at the past, you can see that they’ve killed people.”
