Storyteller Saturday! 💖 If your characters had the opportunity to get any pet they wanted, what would they choose? Who already has a pet?
Hey hey! Thanks for sending something in. I’ll pick a few characters from different projects below
Coriander, from my main project (found here) techincally has pets – she and her mother have two chickens, but they’re more so treated as livestock than pets. She would probably want a big hunting/sheep dog (that of course is just a big softie) or a small lizard to sit on her shoulder and eat worms and things. Both, of course, would be strays she befriended and adopted over time.
Jasper, from the same story, wants a firebird, or a peacock, or a Bagwyrm – a massive caterpillar that builds a mobile cocoon on its back. Info here.
Bette, from A Crown of Hoarfrost, also has a not-quite pet, Skau their mousing cat. Cats in this world are regular household fixtures, in a sense, meant to ward off malevolent spirits and unwanted mice, as well as eating leftover scraps of fish. However, she wants another, even bigger and fluffier than Skau to use as a pillow.
Her husband Endymion meanwhile is the most extra to ever extra, and requires a living stag made of ice and nothing less.
Beck, from Mx. Fortune, also has a cat named Quincey (tfw you realize everyone has cats), but she’d love a boa or python that’s as big as she is. Something big and slithery and scaley with a perfectly boopable snoot, while her friend June wants a thematically appropriate “henchpet,” aka a semi-sentient who-knows-what that goes along with her supervillain theme of evil pastries. A talking cupcake would be, in her words, “sweet.”
Finally, Lise, from my latest and untitled project, really wants a kitten. A soft tiny cat that would sit on her lap while she crochets and can be carried about in her pocket. She also wouldn’t mind a rat, but kittens are her favorite.

“ i won’t reject your help. but you must know none of this will be easy. ” ( from modern icicle #1 )
just more misc memes || @biiingbao || accepting
▬▬ι═══════ﺤ 🔥 || Hanzo thinks, people in general would be a lot more happier if they admitted things more often, and that includes Bi-Han. In a sense, they are all prisoners of some memory, or fear, or disappointment - they are all unfortunately defined by something they cannot change. Everything the pyromancer does is triggered by an emotion of either desire or fear, and he had long learned to survive and accept - despite his defiant stubbornness stemming from his pride, so much to his chagrin - from even the most excruciatingly painful and debilitating circumstances. They have long honed the fangs of their weapons; feral and hungry, seeking to harpoon, pierce, and cleave through bone and spill marrow and crimson, in order to decimate the criminal syndicate, surely eyeing them from the bird’s eye view from their advantageous position, from up above.
His catharsis seems to manifest as an indestructible weapon of his controlled inferno burning ablaze, and no matter what the cost, he will find himself aiding Bi-Han with weapons drawn - both his chained kunai and firearm alike - as he defends not only himself, but of the cryomancer, and of the world he once defiantly resisted to belong in, so that the fire of his righteous justice could gnaw through their immorality. Hanzo Hasashi is no longer the beast they sought to tame, much to their objection - alone, scarred, and hungry - but regal, assertive, and dominating force of nature that would live with proverbial brightness; colorful and enchanting, instead of being volatilely dangerous, and full of bloodthirsty revenge.
“Ever since I began wielding my fire, I have long come to terms that I could never disregard the prospect of violence and danger,” no longer his hellfire is this twisting construct gorging itself on half-obscured pleasures and flesh, but capable of eloquently enunciate the glorious righteous justice that will brand such necessity, a caution, and a brand of his specific pain. His defiant, dignified gaze ascends to sweep over the looming architecture above, as his long, calloused fingers clutch around the handle of his chained kunai, only to bellow from deep within; the propagation of his extended momentum deeply plunging the sharpened blade through the window, skewering through an unfortunate adversary who had been standing too close to the window.
“Our names shall be remembered, not as mere victims and pawns of a war that was meant to annihilate both of our clans, for it has given us consolidated reasons for us to unite against forces of evil,” the firearm swirls in his hands - a weapon as well as an extension to how he moves. Hanzo awaits Bi-Han’s steep ascension of hoarfrost to coat over the makeshift slope they have created. The wild dance of their unsynchronized, but seemingly choreographed movements will thrust deep into the belly of the beast which they must immolate and conquer.
The adrenaline in him flows like the kamikaze wind, and Hanzo Hasashi will command it fully. Through the blades he wield, he would challenge even the impossibility of winning, for one simply does not bring a knife to a gunfight. But Hanzo Hasashi is not an ordinary, tepid warrior without conviction of his skills and craft. For his polished mastery will bleed scarlet and fire, as the adversaries’ skin will open up, for Bi-Han to decimate through, leaving them unidentifiable and in shattered shards skewered through the chilling despair of stalagmites frozen over. ▬▬ι═══════ﺤ 🔥 ||
#✗ the ineffable testimony of spawned hellfire (scorpion)#✗ ugly syllables of conjured vindictive crimson (modern au)#✗ the blizzard within (bi-han || biiingbao)#✗ the frigid wildfire of justice (bi-han || biiingbao)#(bihanzo)#(aka the rewrite of the raid: redemption)#biiingbao

Do you have a favorite kind of monster you'd like to write more about? Do you have any monster species of your own design you'd like to write more about?
Hi hi! My favorite monster is definitively the fair folk. Morally ambiguous, ancient and powerful, with their own agendas that humans can only guess at. I think no less than four of my current projects have some form of the fair folk in them, and while they might not be a monster in the traditional/modern sense, I love having them use their inhumanity in monstrous ways.
As for original monsters, I don’t have too too many, but I think I would love to sit down and expand the trolls and undarjorski of A Crown of Hoarfrost. The trolls are sort of inspired by traditional Scandanavian trolls, but made to be more vicious and more social human-sized predators that wear the furs and skulls of their first kills as headdresses. They’re made of a living rock, and have the capability of world-changing magic power, but only one or two of them have ever figured out how to wield it.

The woods are dark, no matter the time of day. I hear stories from trappers that go out mid-morning, checking for foxes and wolves and marmots and stoats. The leaves gather together to whisper as you pass by. They giggle as they move ever closer, until the sun is barely stronger than distant stars, desperately trying to reach its poor children and keep them safe from harm.
The stars do not reach me here, and I cannot hear the bells.

What are the hobbies of your ocs
Thank you for the message! Here’s a couple OCs you might like to hear about:
From Coriander:
Coriander makes flower crowns and sings to herself. She likes to make beautiful things, especially in fields, where the flowers and the sky go on forever. She’s a quiet person, but she doesn’t like to be alone when she does this either.
Jasper mostly makes up stories and practices theatrics. He’s constantly on the move, and never quite had the chance to pick up hobbies, especially not after he left the city in which he grew up, but he loves to perform and make people laugh all the same.
Solomon tends to his garden and his sheep flocks, and experiments with cross breeding his flowers and fruit trees. Despite his massive size and claws, he can be incredibly precise and has a pair of cutters that had been passed down to him from an older firedrake many years ago.
From Lady of Ashes
Winnie makes lace and embroidery for fun. She works in a hatshop, so her “hobby” is directly contributing to work, but she genuinely loves to work with her hands to create something tiny but intricate to go on the hats as well.
Agnes, her best friend, reads and writes poetry and gossips, as well as cares for her niece and nephew. It’s hard to have time for too many hobbies, but she always finds the time to read before bed.
Duva meanwhile reads up on the latest horoscopes, practises stage makeup and runs lines, and goes window shopping. She can’t buy everything she wants -- and she wants a lot -- but she likes to go looking at things all the same.
From The Hoarfrost Crown
Bette spends most of her time socializing, working, or messing around with her sisters and best friend. Roughhousing and making jokes are some of her most common pass times. But there’s always something to be done -- housework, mending torn clothing, setting bells, and so on.
Naza, her sister, spins elaborate tales and tries to turn them into songs, but they’re never quite good enough to share with anyone but her closest friends. While bette mends, Naza usually cooks or works on the house itself, if any of the wooden slats or glass panes need to be looked at.
And finally, Tamber, who is twelve, is currently in a phase where she thinks she’s more of an adult than she is. She fantasizes about herself and the boy she has a crush on, chases after the cat, and spends endless hours braiding her sisters’ hair. Bette’s especially is ideal for elaborate braids, and Tamber is always coming up with something new.

Do any of your characters have distinct accents and/or dialects that we would recognize?
Hmm. The struggle with this is that 9/10 of my projects don’t take place in this world anyway, so there’s no way to accurately say.
Coriander speaks with a countryside Crescian accent, for example, which doesn’t have a 1:1 translation to our world. However, Cresce itself is meant to resemble a standard Western European high fantasy kingdom, so it’s fairly easy to assume it would resemble something from England, though it has Gaelgallah, the distinctly Gaelic elfish kingdom, Ninoom the Persian-inspired kingdom, and a few others I’m still trying to develop but don’t have as much influence in the story just yet.
Hoarfrost Crown takes place in the tiny village of Kellu, but the entire story inspired by Scandanavian folklore, and a lot of the words used for the fair folk there are lifted from Norwegian. The language my main character would speak there would likely sound like that.
The most obvious one is Lady of Ashes. You’ve got the capital city of Merveaux, and places named Monteciennes and Guisson. Mages called Fabricants. The Noblesse d’Epee, and d’Livre, and the brave chatvaliers who work with big war cats called Fabrichats (as opposed to the chevaliers in our world who work with horses.) Like three guesses as to what language you think I’m basing this on.
However -- while the kingdom we begin in is decidedly French, and has many characters speaking what would likely translate to a Francophone language, there’s also the desert country Eret Suv which I’m having a grand time developing. It has a Semitic-based language (Hebrew especially, since I studied it for most of my life) and has locations such as Ha’esh, the Migdalvan, and Berizial. Davenish which is English-Inspired but has sort of meshed with a series of tiny Scandanavian-esque settlements in the very mountainous North, featuring Klaagenfurt and Loughport, and Deneri which I’m trying to develop more as well and is going to be inspired by India.

🌷 — Do any of your characters have a green thumb?
Yes!
Coriander Tippit can talk life into just about anything, and learned from her mother. Solomon the dragon does as well, and can and will make you a tiny bouquet with his giant claws. I think the dwarven queen Ghislaine may as well, but I haven’t super developed her yet. Would you like some neat herb facts? Ask these guys.
From the projects i haven’t posted much about, Polly Clarke from the Glittering Queen is even more skilled, having honed her abilities to magic plants to life as much as to breathe fire thanks to dragon mom, and Ursula, the witch from Hoarfrost Crown, though the things she grows range from nice flowers to useful herbs to dear god what is that.
And since you already know about them, you get to know that Tanith Blythe can create any living thing she can imagine. Anything. So long as no-one is watching her, she can create an entire garden of the most beautiful, horrific, unique, or boring flora and fauna you’ve ever made. Also she’s a shapeshifter who knows little in the ways of idioms, so of course she can turn her thumb green.

Thinking about how in kellu, being fat and muscular is probably better for your health for survival since fat helps retain heat. Aka every single one of the human characters is chub and squishy if not outright fat. Thank you.
#text post#hoarfrost misc#hoarfrost#I could go into a long ramble about how since fat retains heat and food could be incredibly scarce in winter#then excess weight and body fat became a sign of a good mate way back when that just kind of persisted#through to the present day of the story’s setting so eating heartily and sharing any excess food is central to a happy life in their culture#long shiny hair. thunder thighs and tummies. the ideal kellu aesthetic

WORLD BUILDING. Approx 1100 words. I had some ideas for the culture of Kellu, the village in which our main character grew up, which of course shaped her values and personality. Pieces of it may or may not change depending. Approx 1100 words.
Content warnings for; mentions of food and alcohol, mentions of infant death/pregnancy/birth.
Architecture: Houses are stone and waterproofed/weather proofed, well-insulated. Usually built around a central hearth, even if it’s just a small fire pit in the ground. The outside is usually plain, with rugs and the like inside. Narrower doorways for most, occasionally wider ones. The kitchen is the largest if not the only room (sometimes folks just sleep on beds around the oven/on top of the oven), and there’s small hearths in every room.
Big city fancy pants houses have heated floors. This is not a city tho.
Population is just big enough for you to not know everyone on sight. Idk, 300 or so?
Life spans are probably shorter than in the city. 50/60 years or so?
Economy:
Bartering, favors, and honor systems are the main forms of trade, though coin isn’t entirely unheard of. It just doesn’t help as much as, say, a new door for looking after the kids for a day so you can hang out with friends.
Everyone has a trade or contributes what they can. Most folks are food producers of some sort -- fishers, farmers, shepherds.
The nearest settlement is a sizable township/city that’s a good few days’ boat ride north. Occasionally merchants will travel and sell wares and bring back news, but most folk never leave home.
Diet: Rye and oat for bread and meals. Barley. Beer especially, some vodka, kvas, etc. P much anything that can be fermented. Berries, leafy winter greens. Cabbage, potatoes and carrots, beans, peas. And fish especially. Salmon mackerel, herring, and the occasional octopus, crab or squid. Hot teas.
Coffee is a delicacy rarely seen in kellu. Occasionally given as gifts in weddings.
Mobility Aids: Wheelchairs or crutches as mobility aids in the summer. Snow chairs pulled by goats or sheep or occasionally yaks if youre brave enough in winter -- essentially a wheelchair strapped to a sled so it doesn’t sink into the snow. People dont love it because goats are DUMB and smelly why cant wheels just work on snow??? Crutches and canes tend to get similar weight distribution attachments. It’s common for folk with free time to paint or carve intricate patterns into the wood.
Fashion: Bright colors and vivid dyes. Multiple layers of wool and furs -- stockings, underwear, skirts/pants shirt, undercoat and overcoat, hats and scarves. Mittens, boots. Some people like to layer skirts so it’s rainbows etc. Some teens wear certain colors to suggest flirting or openness for marriage, but it’s not universal. Shorter skirts/coats are occasionally worn by teens in their rebellious phase, since you Dont Expose Skin (because snow).
Hair styles incorporate braids, beads, etc, and often are long plaits down the back if not pulled up under a fur hat.
Hair long enough to braid is common in every gender. If you don’t have hair or cut it short for whatever reason (usually a sign of someone to be shunned and mistrusted, a common punishment for people who do BIG crimes etc), people often have a plait of yak fur or wool to your hat or coat. Braids are one of the many methods to sort of passively ward off trolls, as well as the color red (?) and it’s just fun and artistic.
Weather: Summer is temperate, usually 60-70s at most, and winter is often brutal but they have lots of ways of coping. Bonfires and heavy coats, often have smaller animals sleeping inside for extra warmth, so its’ not entirely uncommon for a yak to just be chilling inside someone’s house.
Animals: Most everyone has a mousing cat. There’s probably a folkloric tie-in as well. Sheep and Yaks are most common livestock/work animals, and graze on scrub brush at the edge of the woods for the most part. Sheep are regularly shorn. Cleaning, carding, and spinning are some of the most common activities to do in down time.
Occasionally used for meat/furs, but usually milk for cakes and wool and warmth and work
Music and singing are paramount to passing time. There’s shanties, working songs, and plenty of homemade music as well.
Bells: EVERYONE makes bells. From cowbells that hang from the necks of their livestock and heavy iron bells to hang over doors or windows, to small bells made of metal blanks folded around scrap metal/beans/stones/nuts. If you’re not making bells, you’re working with wool, you’re fixing clothes, or you’re weaving cords on which to hang the bells.
Weddings: Marriage has LOTS of bright colors. While most people wear their best dress/coats instead of a single dedicated outfit, there are brightly-dyed cloaks and veils loned to you from family members/neighbors for the occasion. The happy couple make a red cord for bells for each other, with gold or white dyed thread woven in and two or three bells, tie it around the other’s wrist as a sign of engagement.
Babies: Not named until after they survived their first winter. People try to arrange it so that babies are born in mid to late spring so they have as much chance of survival as possible, so there’s a mother’s festival every april or may to celebrate. Gifts of booties and clothes and other baby materials are given to every mom, doubly so to new mothers. The naming ceremony is probably in the same event, and it’s like a week or two of celebrating babies. Maybe when the first calf/lamb is born? Midwives are sent for if there’s an unexpected number of pregnancies that year, but everyone has some basic knowledge of how to help in a standard birth, because it’s hard enough to survive that process much less if you’re unprepared and the witch or midwife is busy already.
If the child is ill, has NO chance of surviving, etc there’s a special funerary ceremony. (Not sure what it is yet) but it is NEVER left to die. Even if it’s born out of wedlock, it’s seen as better to raise it anyway with the shame than abandoning it in the woods. While Mylings exist, if you’re found to have been the parent of one, it’s doubly worse. The world is dangerous enough. You don’t need to subject infants to that, and/or make it worse for everyone else too.

For any of your WIPs - what does the protagonist value more: wisdom or ambition?
Thanks for the q! I’ll answer for a few of my WIPs based off whatever’s floating around in my brain at the moment.
For April Showers, all of the characters value wisdom more, I think. Lise and Cass’s lives are very much centered around comfort and artistic pursuit. They live in a small, secluded town -- almost a village, honestly -- that lends itself to a slow, easy-paced life and while plenty of their neighbors have great ambitions and aspirations, our heroes prefer to stay at home and enjoy their time day-to-day. Neither want anything more than a long and easy life, with Lise’s greatest ambition being the chance to go see the ocean up close one day.
In Graveyard Lesbians, However, our main character Kaz absolutely values ambition over wisdom, though not in the way most people think. She isn’t fond of sitting around philosophizing or trying to figure things out, she’s much more of a doer than a thinker or planner and it shows. Her ex, Josie, is on the opposite side of the spectrum however. While she has no shortage of ambition, she prefers wisdom in others and in herself, and prefers to plan before action. And her current love interest, Lucy, being dead, has no more use for ambition, but it’s still a central part of her personality. She’s a go-getter, and she wants to do things, and while she’s far better at planning and thinking things through logically than Kaz is, a currently-living Lucy would likely own her own business by 30.
Lastly, in Crown of Hoarfrost, the main character Bette prefers neither. While she is ambitious herself, her main value from childhood has always been kindness and how much you care about others. The culture that raised her emphasizes contributing to the community one way or another, even if it’s just small ways, and ensuring your neighbors are comfortable, especially when they can’t take care of themselves. The other major charactor in Hoarfrost, the fae king Enda, is actually the same despite all appearances -- he values kindness subconsciously in a way he doesn’t quite understand, as there’s an unsurprising lack of kindness directed towards an usurper of the throne that forced his people to live permanently under a mountain and away from the sun. If he had to choose between the two, would choose ambition every time. Despite his subconscious desire to receive kindness, he has respect for people who are ambitious and power hungry. The more ruthless, the more impressive in his eyes. Finally, the queen mother Ebba values wisdom. She is a direct victim of Enda’s ruthlessness in a number of ways, including the loss of her true son so that Enda could take his place and thus the throne. She has a seething hatred for people who put down others in order to get further themselves, and this has bled into anyone who seeks power at all.

Hi! Do any of your characters knit or crochet or spin? Big fiber arts fan here myself :D
Oh same! I’m a big crocheter myself, so I have two characters who do that -- Lise from April Showers, who crochets (especially scarves and shawls), quilts, and also participates in anything else her crafting group is doing at the time.
Winnie, from a different project, also crochets lace specifically, though she also does the more traditional form of lace-making with multiple threads instead of one.
Most of my characters know how to sew as well, regardless of gender, even if it’s only as little as repairing a hole in a sweater or putting a button back on, though it helps that most of my WIPs are also period pieces centering around lower-class folk, even if they wind up in upper-class settings.
I don’t think I have anyone who spins, but I might just use that somewhere, just you wait. I might put it in Hoarfrost, which is already a Beauty and the Beast retelling, to throw a bit of Rumpelstilskin in there. I also...might not have anyone who knits at the moment as a personal vendetta against the people who know I crochet and still ask what I’m knitting.
#ask#misc#actually now that i think of it it would fit really well in hoarfrost if the queen mother could spin moonlight into silver#or perhaps sunlight into thread or something#and i'm not sure how to put it into words just yet but#it's a cool way to explain why endymion is the king now#raevenlywrites#Ask
