Chlonette - "Hey, remember that ‘if I ever see you again, I’ll be morally and legally obligated to kill you conversation’ we had a while back?”
omg yes—hngngg have some accidental angst?
also some season 2 spoilers kind of so here’s a line of no return vv
“Hey, remember that ‘if I ever see you again, I’ll be morally and legally obligated to kill you’ conversation we had a while back?”
Chloe blinked at Marinette and sighed a little. “You can’t be serious–Mari–”
“Don’t you–don’t you ‘Mari’ me,” she hissed, teeth clenched. “You just left! You–you didn’t tell anyone where you were going! We all woke up one day and you were just gone! Do you know how worried we were?!”
“I left a note,” Chloe sighed, setting down her bags.
“A note is not good enough Chloe,” Marinette snapped. “Your ‘note’ was just an ‘I’m fine’ with your name on it. So what? I know you didn’t run off to go kill yourself, but I don’t where you are so what if something had happened? What if someone had hurt you or you got into some sort of accident and I… I would have never known.” Tears pricked at her eyes and she took in a deep breath. “Do you know how worried we were? Adrien–Adrien just got done losing his father, and we wake up to you just… just fucking gone. And you think… you think you can just come back here after weeks of being off the grid and say ‘hey I’m back’ and everything would be okay?”
“I didn’t think–”
“Where were you, Chloe?” Marinette interrupted her, walking closer and wiping her face as tears fell from her eyes. “Where did you go?”
Chloe hesitated and glanced away before straightening and meeting Marinette’s look. “Germany.”
“Germany?” Marinette asked, a touch of disbelief in her voice. “And what was in Germany?”
“I… got a letter in the mail the day before I left,” Chloe said, refusing to meet her eyes, gaze sweeping over the space that was Marinette’s flat. “It was a letter… from a lawyer in Germany. Requesting my presence for the reading of my mother’s will.” The silence spurred her on a little, and she continued, even if her voice was quiet and unsure. “My mom, Mari. She was in Germany. She… died. And I went to go meet my brother and sister, who are just teenagers–who lost their mom. But apparently, even though she didn’t love me enough to stay or to talk to me, they knew all about me.”
Marinette’s face went from upset to sympathetic and she reached out and cupped Chloe’s face. “Why did you go alone?” she asked quietly.
“Because it’s embarrassing!” she whined, hating that she sounded so young and broken. “It’s embarrassing that I was such a horrible person that she left! That she hated me so much she wanted nothing to do with me until she died! Okay? Why would I want to bring my girlfriend to that?”
Marinette sighed and Chloe hated the look of pity on her face. “You don’t really think she left because of you, do you?”
“Didn’t she?” Chloe countered. “I was four. I was four and I watched her pack her bags and walk away. I remember standing in the door and promising I would be a good girl for her. To ‘please stay, Mommy. Please. I love you.’ And she still left.”
And she couldn’t stop from crying, crumbling in front of Marinette and burying her face in the crook of her neck, her bags forgotten by the closed door.
