Trigger Warning: allegory for Racism/Prejudice/marginalization
As a personal note I do not claim to know a whole lot on these matters. House Next Door is meant to be purely fictional and for entertainment purposes however I understand the parallels in this chapter and please feel free to voice your criticism as I understand this is a very sensitive topic and I will endeavour to do better for future chapters if any concerns arise.
I want HND to be enjoyed by all and you can skip this chapter entirely if this may be difficult for you as it will be summed up if needed in future.
Besides that, here is my birthday present to all of you! I love you, stay safe and I hope you have a wonderful day <3

Why Employers Value an HND in Business Qualification
Tumblr media
Employers are increasingly seeking candidates who not only have theoretical knowledge but also practical skills that can be applied directly in the workplace. An HND in Business (Higher National Diploma) stands out as a sought-after qualification due to its balanced approach to learning, offering both academic insights and hands-on experience. Here’s why employers highly value this credential:
1. Practical, Work-Ready Skills
One of the biggest advantages of an HND in Business is its focus on practical training. Unlike traditional degree programs that often lean heavily on theory, an HND equips students with real-world business skills. The program emphasizes the application of concepts through projects, case studies, and problem-solving exercises that mirror actual workplace scenarios. This means graduates are prepared to contribute effectively from their first day on the job.
2. Relevant Industry Knowledge
The curriculum of an HND in Business is designed with input from industry professionals to ensure that it aligns with current business trends and practices. This relevance helps graduates stay ahead of the curve and possess up-to-date knowledge that employers find valuable. Whether it's understanding digital marketing, managing business operations, or financial decision-making, HND holders bring in fresh, applicable insights.
3. Strong Foundation for Key Business Areas
HND programs cover a broad spectrum of essential business topics, including finance, marketing, human resources, and management. This comprehensive exposure allows graduates to develop a well-rounded understanding of how businesses operate. Employers appreciate this versatility as it means that HND holders can adapt to various roles within the organization, contributing to different departments as needed.
4. Ability to Adapt Quickly
Because HND students are trained to apply their learning to practical problems, they tend to adapt quickly to the demands of new roles. They are familiar with collaborative projects, time management, and analytical thinking, making them effective team players and problem-solvers. Employers value this adaptability, especially in fast-paced work environments where quick decision-making is critical.
5. Hands-On Experience and Internships
Many HND programs incorporate internships or work placements as part of their curriculum. This exposure provides students with direct experience in business settings, allowing them to develop professional networks and understand workplace dynamics before they graduate. Employers find candidates with such experience highly desirable, as it reduces the learning curve and onboarding time.
6. Employability and Immediate Impact
An HND in Business is designed to produce graduates who can make an immediate impact. The practical assignments and applied learning ensure that candidates have already tackled real-world business problems. This readiness helps them seamlessly integrate into the workforce, providing immediate value in roles such as management assistants, marketing coordinators, or operations executives.
7. Flexibility and Problem-Solving Abilities
HND graduates are often trained to think on their feet, handling projects that require both independent and team-based problem-solving. The practical exercises they complete during their studies develop their ability to assess situations critically and devise creative solutions. Employers value this proactive approach as it leads to innovation and more efficient workflows within their teams.
8. Pathway for Continuous Learning
Employers also recognize that an HND in Business can be a stepping stone for further education. Graduates with an HND often pursue top-up degrees or professional certifications to enhance their knowledge. This commitment to continuous learning is viewed positively by employers, as it indicates that the candidate is invested in their professional growth and development.
9. Strong Communication and Interpersonal Skills
HND programs emphasize communication skills through presentations, group projects, and case study discussions. As a result, graduates tend to have strong interpersonal abilities that are essential in business environments. Good communication aids in building relationships with clients, collaborating with teams, and leading projects—qualities that employers prioritize in potential hires.
Conclusion
An HND in Business provides a powerful blend of theoretical understanding and practical skills that make graduates work-ready and valuable to employers. The combination of real-world experience, adaptability, and a broad knowledge base prepares HND holders to step confidently into various business roles, adding immediate value and setting the stage for career advancement.

Super Graphics Evaluation
This client-based project started of a surprise because I was sick in that week and on the Friday, I came in, I suddenly found out we were going to Sutton College to create designs for their HND room.
Overall, this project challenged me to question my value as a designer. Through this project I have broaden my communication skills with my peers and clients, it helped focus on focused research that is not design focused. What I mean instead of searching other artists I research topics such as braille and the Birmingham flag. It is important that I learnt as this helps me make a more relatable design for my clients Since my clients are corporate, I couldn’t be abstract.
The use of Tumblr for my blogging my work was useful because it allowed me to share digital work quicker and efferently saving paper because I didn’t need to print work for a sketchbook. This sustainability is useful and is necessary to use in the future.
Originally, we were tasked to window designs for two rooms and a HE Logo. When approaching creating the windows for Sutton I wanted to make the designs simple but with an impactful meaning. The library windows were inspired by braille. Through research, reflection, and development of work I made a really simple design. However, I underestimated my clients as when explaining they wasn’t that impressed by the design. Ultimately Peter and Deja worked on that. The next windows were for the HE common room. To be honest I didn’t try that hard. To justify myself I believed that it was more important to make the HE logo than anything else and thus I put the most effort into that.
Despite thinking the logo was good they clients where confused. I used a head to represent the student, but they said it was random. Through this project I learnt that my clients had a desired goal and no matter how much I explained they wouldn’t care. Reflecting on this I realised that as a designer my opinions matter. Although I couldn’t express myself this time in the future, I will learn to communicate a lot better.
Working with Hamza and Matt taught my teamwork skills. Although Hamza was in charge and did a lot of things, I was able to make the video which helped comminate our vision much clearer. In the future however, I want to play an equal role rather than putting pressure on one person.
Throughout this project I had present my designs. This helped strengthen my communication skills.
Overall, I believe I should’ve taken this project more seriously. I underestimated because it was for college but if this was a real client I would have not got paid. I am appreciate of Hamza for making a logo that was suitable. Learning from this project I will be more collaborative in our future exhibition in June.

Stream Fright
Streamer!Bucky x Girlfriend!Reader
A/N: I really don’t know where I’m going with this, but I’m crushing hard on Streamer!Bucky and got inspired by all the spooky videos I watched recently, hope you’ll enjoy this.
The only light in the room was coming from Bucky’s screen, projecting his shadow on the wall behind him.
The creepy music his headphones were diffusing in his ears added to the already scary atmosphere.
He talked here and there to his subscribers, commenting about how he was about to piss his pants or things about the game.
« Guys, please, next time I want to play an horror game convince me not to »
Her managed to regain a normal voice tone after the umpteenth jumpscare of the evening and itw as becoming harder and harder to do so because itw as became scarier as the game progressed.
Horror games weren’t really Bucky’s thing, but for spooky season, he wanted to stay on topic. Everyone suggested he tried Five Nights at Freddy’s and he gave in, using the presence of his girlfriend in the next room as a reassurance that no monster could pop up behind him for real.
After two and a half hours of livestream, Bucky took a short break to go empty his full bladder and get a few more snacks. He set his camera before leaving the room.
In the living room, Y/N was getting ready to go to bed and turned around when hearing the door of Bucky’s office open.
« How is it going ? » she asked with a tired smile.
Bucky walked over to her and wrapped his arms around her little frame.
« Amazing, haven’t peed myself yet. I’m getting a small break, are you heading off to bed ? »
She nodded, settling comfortably against him, using her closeness to kiss his cheek.
« Goodnight and have fun ! » she whispered into his ear.
He pulled back a little so he’s now able to see her face and pressed a tender kiss to her lips, making her grin at the sweet gesture.
« Goodnight doll, I’ll be careful not to be too noisy »
Y/N nodded before untangling herself from her boyfriend , pecking his lips again and walk herself to their shared bedroom.
Bucky resumed on what he had planned on doing , toilets and snacks before stepping back into the dark room.
Turning on the camera again, he leaned back in his seat and repositionned his headphones on his head.
« Hey guys, I’m back ! I got a little courage kiss from Y/N, I’m ready for everything now ! »
And on that, he plunged back into his game.
Surely, the game became scarier as he approached the end, Bucky’s nerves also approached their own breaking point…
The outside world was a simple dark room with nothing existing while he focused on the monsters and goals to achieve, the jumpscares never too far.
A hideous creature jumped on his screen, making him jump in his chair, which rolled a few inches back while he couldn’t help but let out a scream.
However, thinking his fear-meter couldn’t go higher, he didn’t expect to feel two hnds grabbing his shoulders out of nowhere and a loud « BOO ! » echoing through the jet black room.
Bucky jumped again, this time, shouting at least three tones higher than the previous time. And in his fearful frenzy he fell from his chair. His body hit the ground in a loud thud ; while laughter started to spread around the room.
« Oh god ! I didn’t think that would work ! »
The voice could barely make out the words from how hard their owner was laughing.
The chat was going wild with all they were witnessing
« What the fuck !? » Bucky yelled, not yet understanding what was going on.
Then the room lit up and from his position on the floor, Bucky looked up at his girlfriend, who was shaking like a leaf from laughter, her O so familiar laugh somehow reassuring him on the potential presence of monsters, but completely shattering his ego at the same time.
Bucky was trying to get himself back up while putting his hand over his heart in a vain attempt to calm the beating down.
« You should’ve seen yourself, amazing ! » Y/N mumbled still agitated with laughter.
The streamer, now having regained his senses, his his face in his hands and let out a groan.
Y/N laughter died down and she felt a pang of guilt when she saw Bucky’s expression when she retrieved his hands off.
His eyes were wet and face still undergoing the shock and confusion of what just happened.
« You scared the hell out of me » he whimpered looking up to the ceiling as if to push the tears back in.
« I’m so sorry »
Y/N walked to her boyfriend and engulfed him in a big hug which he returned instantly. She let her hands run along his back to try her best to comfort him. All while he plunged his face in the crook of her neck.
The couple completely forgot about the ongoing livestream and focused on each other.
But the emotional moment was ruined by another fit of laughter from Y/N and Bucky instantly pulled himself apart, a hurt expression plastered on his face.
« You’re still laughing ? »
She was almost bent in half from how hard she was laughing again.
« I keep replaying the scene in my head , I can’t stop, I’m so sorry « she wheezed
Bucky shook his head, ego breaking even more than it already had but a small smile managed to make hits way through.
« I’m out of here » he said, before stomping out, almost bursting in laughter at the ridiculousness of the situation.
« No, Bucky, come back ! » you said, between two fits.
Then you made you way to his computer, staring at the camera, eyes full of tears from how hard you just laughed and adressed to the viewers.
« I’m sorry, guys, for ruining the livestream, I hope you won’t hate me »
She stopped herself briefly to look at the chat where numerous messages were saying how great of a move that was and another bunch of positive comments.
« Apparenty not. I think this is all for tonight. Sorry again, but i gotta go comfort my boyfriend, bye ! »
She waved at the camera aand cut the stream before joining your scared boyfriend for some well-deserved comfort cuddles.

This week was all about where content comes from and also who owns that content. We looked at sources of content, for example:

We also identified different sources of imagery, etc., for example Illustration, Icons, Photography… from places like:

Copyright
What is copyright?
Copyright (or author’s right) is a legal term used to describe the rights that creators have over their literary and artistic works. Works covered by copyright range from books, music, paintings, sculpture, and films, to computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps, and technical drawings.
Copyright touches our lives on a daily basis. Whether you read a book, watch a film, transfer music, or take a photo, copyright issues are ever-present.
Copyright law aims to balance the interests of those who create content, with the public interest in having the widest possible access to that content. WIPO administers several international treaties in the area of copyright and related rights.
There are two types of rights under copyright:
economic rights, which allow the rights owner to derive financial reward from the use of their works by others; and
moral rights, which protect the non-economic interests of the author.
Most copyright laws state that the rights owner has the economic right to authorise or prevent certain uses in relation to a work or, in some cases, to receive remuneration for the use of their work (such as through collective management). The economic rights owner of a work can prohibit or authorise:
its reproduction in various forms, such as printed publication or sound recording;
its public performance, such as in a play or musical work;
its recording, for example, in the form of compact discs or DVDs;
its broadcasting, by radio, cable or satellite;
its translation into other languages; and
its adaptation, such as a novel into a film screenplay.
Examples of widely recognised moral rights include the right to claim authorship of a work and the right to oppose changes to a work that could harm the creator's reputation.
Creative Commons
Creative Commons (CC) is an American non-profit organisation devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organisation has released several copyright-licenses, known as Creative Commons licenses, free of charge to the public.
These licenses allow creators to communicate which rights they reserve and which rights they waive for the benefit of recipients or other creators. An easy-to-understand one-page explanation of rights, with associated visual symbols, explains the specifics of each Creative Commons license.
Creative Commons licenses do not replace copyright but are based upon it. They replace individual negotiations for specific rights between copyright owner (licensor) and licensee, which are necessary under an "all rights reserved" copyright management, with a "some rights reserved" management employing standardised licenses for re-use cases where no commercial compensation is sought by the copyright owner. The result is an agile, low-overhead and low-cost copyright-management regime, benefiting both copyright owners and licensees.

DEMENTIA IN THE UK

SKILL : DATA VISUALISATION - INFOGRAPHIC

During my first year of university, my Nannie suffered from and passed due to the affects of Dementia.

I decided to base my infographic on the topic of Dementia in the UK as it's a disease that, unless witnessed first hand, not everyone understands the full extent and issues it raises.

I wanted to make something that would provide people with the relevant information in an interesting but informative way.

Hey, I'm Courtney.

I’m a young, enthusiastic UI designer based in Belfast currently seeking placement opportunities for 2020-2021.

I'm currently a second year student at Ulster University, Belfast, studying a Bachelors in Interaction Design.

My key areas of interest include:

Front-End Development

Branding

UI Design

App Design

Data Visualisation

Illustration

Before coming to Ulster University, I achieved a Level 5 HND in Graphic Design at Belfast Metropolitan College. It was here that I discovered my passion for digital design whilst building and designing projects for set briefs.

The Challenge

Create an illustrative travel app considering elements such as mobile design principles, colour and thumb.

The Process

For this project, I began by exploring the potential answers to the problem given by drawing a mind-map of ideas after hearing the topic “Travel”. From this, I was able to branch the ideas out further to see which ideas held the most potential in regards to fulfilling the set brief of creating an app using illustration but also considering the potential needs of the intended users.

After discussing my list of ideas in class, my next stage was to begin market research. I had to gain a sound knowledge and understanding of all the elements that need to be considered when building and designing an app before I could begin developing my own concept. Looking at how existing apps use illustration in regards to travel as well as their navigation layout approach, icon sets and branding were all helpful as it made me consider what was needed for my own app in order for it to be successful.

As I’d never created an icon set before, I used the design technique of master apprenticing to recreate a set of travel icons so that I would have a better approach to designing using just simple shapes. I enjoyed completing this exercise and it encouraged me to research the history of icons to see how they have varied in design approach from the 1900’s to present day.

Now that I had a better knowledge on what needed to be included in an app, I then went back to my initial mind-map of ideas. From this I decided to create a dog themed app as I felt it held strong visual stimulation for creating illustrations. My inspiration behind the functioning of the app stemmed from looking at Pokemon Go. I wanted to design an app that encourages the user to travel in real life to collect as many dog breeds as they could, gaining a stamp for each breed as a reward.

The idea for the app is that the user would photograph a dog they find whilst out exploring, the app would then transform the dog into an illustrative id card which would then be stored. Each dog discovered gains the user more ranking and also unlocks mini challenges like a treasure hunt as they have to answer questions and follow clues to end up at a final destination.

Turning to my sketchbook was the next stage of my process so that I could start developing visuals for my app design. I created many rough sketches in regards to icons, illustrations and wireframes so that I could move on to digitising the app using Sketch to develop them into clean, finished design elements which would piece together to finalise the overall app design.

I produced a high-level mock-up of my app to present in front of my classmates in order to receive constructive feedback that would then help guide me to a finalised app design. Once I made the recommended changes to my designs, I created a functioning prototype using InVision to best show how my app design answers the problem set in the original brief.

Some Obstacles

The main challenge I encountered was when I was digitising the dog illustrations as at this point I had limited experiences using Sketch for these purposes. The illustrations therefore took quite a bit of time to create however I feel that this experience helped strengthen my skill set in regards to using this software.

My Reflection

Throughout the process of this project, I feel like I was able to strengthen my existing skill set for developing and designing concepts from start to finish, however, I also got to experiment and learn some new techniques I hadn't tried out before such as prototyping and considering the rule of thumb.
