I was in college in the 90’s, fucking up a HND in Communications. We were doing some exercise to use a computer to lay out a page like a typical newspaper might have. This was about the time of the Clinton Impeachment shite. My pal Gordon kept trying to put in the most tabloid like headline he could think of. “It’s always something like CHAZZA WOZZA MUSSA INNA FUSSA”, he observed. The lecturer wasn’t impressed with his final effort of CAZZA ANNA MONA INNA MUTANT DWARF ROMP FURY, but it was sufficient to burn into my brain forever.

Education and Career Progression.
Due to the wide variety of opportunities, Careers in art are widely considered difficult to achieve with no expectation of financial stability or support. However, if you take a deeper look into the industry, you can find this is not a realistic representation. Many Artists found careers through following education, earning degrees/awards and the many other opportunities educational practice can offer to help them in their future. There are many ways to be educated in art that will help an artist follow a more defined path into the creative industries and narrow a specialized career in one of the many ways artists in the world work.
For example, when studying fine art at University of Exeter, artist and designer Stanley Donwood met Thom Yorke, the lead singer and frontman of the band Radiohead. Yorke asked Donwood to create work and work with the band for cover art and promotional imagery. Because of his professional studies at university, Donwood gained skills that improved his art while giving him the space to meet other creative individuals to work with. Art college and creative universities have this positive impact as it can bring great artists together and in Donwood's case led to him being the artist for one of “the 100 greatest musical artists of all time” according to rolling stone. Donwood is now an established artist whose work is exhibited in many galleries in the UK.
Another artist positively influenced by further education is artist Harry Moody. Moody is an established contemporary artist who specializes in abstract expressionism.  He studied “free painting” at Stadel academy in Frankfurt Germany. While studying here, he was under the teachings of other accomplished artists such as Johannes Schreiter, Thomas Bayrle and Josef Beuys. Studying under such accomplished artists gave him the oppertunity to widen his knowledge of the art world and challenge himself to succeed like his teachers. Moody also studied under Gerhard Ritcher who heavily influenced Moody's knowledge of philosophy which impacted the way he created his work and the meanings he wanted to portray. After completing his educational career Moody is now a gallery owner and a fine arts dealer.
Now moving onto artist and designer Simon Stalenhag. Stalenhag is a Swedish creator who specializes in creating digital illustration and conceptual art. To reach this stage in his career, Stalenhag studied at Future Games Academy in Stockholm. Future Games Academy is a college that specializes in collaborations with game studios and furthering skills in digital art and design. Because of their connection to game companies, Stalenhag was given many opportunities and connections to jumpstart his career right after he completed his education. Stalenhag has worked creating promotional art and concept art for many games, such as “No man's sky.” However, he also now writes and illustrates his own science fiction books. Stalenhag has been nominated for multiple awards and now is a successful artist and designer who is very popular in the videogaming scene.
Today, there are a continuous and endless number of educational options for aspiring artists and designers. For example, “Computer arts” BA (Hons) at Abertay University in Dundee Scotland. Computer arts at Abertay is a course that focuses on 3D development, Digital illustration, Character and asset design and conceptual art. The course takes place over four years and has multiple opportunities such as internship and career placements in third year. The university is also in collaboration with the DARE academy competition and gives the students the opportunity to enter. Artists applying to this course require SQA Higher ABBB for standard entry and ABB for minimum entry or any A in a related college HNC/HND. The completion of this course gives artists direct placement and connection into many specific careers in the games and design industry. This creates security for the students as it provides stability in career opportunities.
Another course is the “Fine Arts” BA (hons) at University of Dundee. The course is a carry on from a first year in foundations of arts at the university. Students taking this course will learn many skills including plaster, bronzing, wood working, presentation of art, material production, screen printing, etching, 3D printing, interactive programming, ceramics and more. These skills give students the opportunity to find multiple careers specialising in these skills. Artists interested in studying this course require a BB at advanced higher or an A in a relevant HNC course or completion of the arts foundation year at University of Dundee. Graduates of this course have used their skills in careers such as film, media, entertainment and being self-employed successful artists.
One other course that also gives students many opportunities is the Graphic Design BDes (Hons) at Edinburgh Napier University. Graphic Design at Edinburgh Napier University is a four-year art course that specializes in graphic and digital design. Within the course students study many different mediums and ways to design practical and artistic designs. People looking to apply to the course require a BBBC in SQA Highers. Many careers can come from studying at this course, specifically ones like working in packaging design, branding, advertising, service design and many other practical design jobs.
After considering and researching all these different opportunities, it is easy to see that through higher education many artists can learn new skills that can push them towards a career in the creative industries.

Careers In Art
Art is unfortunately renowned as a difficult industry to get into and even if you do there is no expectation of success or financial stability. This is partially because there is no set path to become an artist and there is no absolute requirement for a degree or mandatory years of practice/study. Many of the best artists didn't go through further education at all but still find success based on learnt skills and passion. To demonstrate I will describe the career path of a designer, a commission-based artist and abstract painter.
Firstly, I will give the example of Harry Moody and how he built his successful career. Moody is an established contemporary artist who specialises in abstract expressionism painting. He originally studied at an art school in Frankfurt called Staidel Academy where he studied "Free Painting". Here he was influenced by many accomplished artists, and Moody learnt from another painter Johannes Schreiter to give advice and inspiration. He also learnt from Gerhard Richter (another successful contemporary artist) who widened Moody’s knowledge of philosophy and helped him build a more holistic view of art.

contrast, Lulu Chen has had a very different experience when it comes to her artistic career. She began with an Associate of Arts degree in illustration from the Academy of Art University based in San Francisco (2016-2018). Following this she studied at Sheridan College in 2019 and was awarded a Bachelor's of Animation in 2023.  Chen however, also strove to gain experience and knowledge outside of educational establishments, serving an internship at Sony Pictures and freelancing on a project at Pipeline Studios.
Tumblr media

Stanley Donwood is most famously known for his art used on the covers of Radiohead's albums in the 1990s, for which he was awarded more than one GRAMY. Education wise he firstly studied at North Essex College of Art in 1987 where he spent a year completing a foundation art course before moving to study Fine Arts degree at Exeter College of Art (1988-1991).
Many artists have studied the fundamentals of art, and the first course example that I researched is offered by the University of Dundee who offer a BA(Hons) or BDes(Hons) in Art and Design. Students do one year as a foundation before either moving on to a specialized course (they offer a large range from medical/forensic art to courses that cover game and film) or completing the four-year degree. To gain access to this course an HNC (Grade B) is required, but candidates also need to submit a portfolio as a sample of their work so they can gauge both the grades and skill before accepting a potential student. Once graduated alumni can pursue many careers for example roles in the art department for the creative industries or set up yourself as a practicing artist.
Tumblr media
Image: dundee.ac.uk (Art & Design)
Next is the Fine Arts BA(Hons) also from Dundee, which is a three-year course that has a focus on juggling creation and critical thinking to make art of different types. The entry requirements for this fine arts course are an HND at B grade but you also qualify if you have completed an art foundation course. As with the art and design course, students can have the opportunity to study abroad during their degree. This course is taught by practicing artists, and the students have access to a wide variety of studios and workshops spanning the whole creative department.  As this is a fine arts course it is more aimed at those who wish to be creating and exhibiting art, but it does have a wide range of future uses as it still teaches the principles of any art course and the experience would be useful for other things instead of the artists wanting to show in galleries.
Lastly, I looked into the Computer Arts BA(Hons) offered at Abertay University in Dundee which is a very popular course due to being the only one like it for a far reach. This course is more about the design side compared to the fine and traditional arts previously mentioned. The student will study for four years to develop skills in digital arts, design, animation, concept art, visual arts and illustration as well as a knowledge of practitioners, contextual analysis and critical thinking. The entry requirements are a B from HNC in a related subject (Art & Design or CAP etc) and if accepted will have access to many studios equipped with wonderful facilities. As a course it is very aimed at entering the industries and has links to Unreal engines, Screen Skills and has a DARE program. With this degree graduates are likely to work in the art and design department for the gaming, animation, film or illustration industries.

All this considered, it's clear to see that path to becoming an artist can be taken in many different ways despite the wide variety of backgrounds and pathways that lead them to the end goal whatever that may be.

Students face uncertainty as Ogun polytechnic offers nursing, law, other degrees
Tumblr media
“I stayed at home for three years owing to lack of money. My parents wanted education but they were helpless. “I managed to conclude my secondary school education because my dad couldn’t pay the fees. I won’t blame him because he was strong and agile until 2022 when he had an accident that left him completely in a wheelchair. “Despite many pleas, my dad wouldn’t allow my mum to do any job until the accident, no thanks to that drunk driver. “After the accident, my mum got some loans and started a petty business but it wasn’t enough to feed a large family. There was no hope of getting educated. But I had promised my dad that I would be a graduate of law. “So I started working hard, I did all kinds of jobs to raise funds. “Many times I went to construction sites to assist bricklayers, while sometimes, I pushed wheelbarrows in the popular Ojota market. “After over five years of hard labour, my friend, Saheed, told me about Havarde and my little enquiry was to establish if my savings will secure me admission to study law here (Harvarde). “Having confirmed that, I came here, only for me to start hearing from different persons that we have been scammed. “I am currently in my second year. If this turns out to be true, I will be the biggest loser in the world and it won’t be easy for mum to take.” This was Aina Jide’s narration when our reporter approached him earlier in the week where he was seated and lost in thought in Obada area of Abeokuta, the host community to the controversial – Havarde College of Science, Business and Management Studies, a polytechnic where law, pharmacy, nursing, among other professional courses are offered to students. From random interviews, DAILY POST gathered that locals could not explain if the institution is a polytechnic or a university. The students are equally as confused as the locals. But the residents were pleased with the facelift given to commercial activities in the popular Obada, all thanks to the number of students living in the area. In an advert by the school posted online, it advertised that it awards National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) certificates. But the same polytechnic also claimed in the same advert that it runs B.Sc conversion programmes for HND holders, creating confusion as to whether or not the school now has the approval of the National Universities Commission (NUC) to award degrees or it was accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). A student of the school, who refused to give his name over the fear of getting reprimanded, spoke from the ‘pool’ of his confusion when he told DAILY POST correspondent that “Bros, I really do not know what to believe anymore, honestly, I am frustrated.” He said, “We learnt that Havarde was an affiliate of Olabisi Onabanjo University.” When asked the range of their tuition fee, he said law students pay N195,000 yearly as school fees, while those in the nursing department pay N130,000 yearly. Findings But Investigation by DAILY POST showed that the proprietor of the institution, Dr Oluwatosin Adebayo, severed ties with OOU many years back. Thorough checks on both NUC and NBTE websites showed that the school was yet to be accredited as a university. In a 2021 directory of the NBTE, Harvarde college was seen among the list of specialised institutions offering accredited programmes. The college got permission of the NBTE to offer four courses which include: Accountancy, Business Administration, Mass Communication and Computer Science all for National Diploma (ND) only. According to the NBTE, the accreditation ought to expire in October, 2022. Although not confirmed, a staff of the institution who preferred to be anonymous, told DAILY POST that the school got approval to run a monotechnic with the earlier mentioned courses. This reporter, however, discovered that, against the four courses accredited by the NBTE, the school now runs about 30 courses, including criminology, law, nursing, among others. Management reacts Responding to DAILY POST enquiry, the proprietor of the school, Dr Oluwatosin Adebayo, debunked the allegation, insisting that the school was duly registered by the federal government. “We cannot come to Abeokuta and be doing something illegal. If anything is not clear to you, please come to us to get clarification and not spread something that is untrue. “We used to be under OOU before but today, we don’t have any affiliation with OOU again. We can’t continue to serve one person for life,” he stated. He further noted that what he described as a rumour against the school emanated from rusticated students of the institution. According to him, “I think what caused all these rumours is because we do send students away from here. If after a year your GP is less than 1.00 or you misbehave, we will send you away. “We can’t harbour such students around us but most of them will not go home and what they will now do is to embark on unnecessary rumour.” Although the proprietor claimed that university courses on their campuses are on affiliation, he refused to mention the name(s) of the mother institution they are affiliated to. When asked what the school awards to students, Adebayo said, “We have ND, we have HND but we don’t have the power to issue Bsc on our own, so we have to affiliate. But we have accreditation up to HND level.” Meanwhile, thousands of students, just like Jide, are currently in the school, paying huge sums, in pursuit of academic certificates. Read the full article

How do I become a web developer UK
How Do I Become a Web Developer?
Aspiring web developers have a number of options to build a strong skillset and portfolio. Coding boot camps and online courses are popular choices, as are training camps and workshops on specific languages and frameworks.
Foundational knowledge of programming languages like HTML and CSS is a must. Familiarity with front-end frameworks like React and Angular is also useful.
Education and Training
There is no set education or qualification route for becoming a web developer. However, completing an HND, foundation degree or a bachelor’s degree in subjects like computer science with web development, media and digital practice, computing or IT will give you the technical knowledge and skills you need to get started.
Some people also learn the job through on-the-job training, either in an agency or a tech company. These roles usually start at an entry or junior level and allow you to develop your skills over time, learning the different programming languages required by the business.
As you gain experience, you can move up into a senior or lead web developer role. These positions allow you to work on more complex projects and manage a team of junior or entry-level developers. You may also be required to travel to client meetings.
Alternatively, you can choose to become self-employed or freelance, if that’s something you want to do. This type of work is more varied, but it can be less stable and can be stressful if you’re working to tight deadlines. If you go this route, you will need to have excellent organizational skills and a good portfolio of past projects. You will also need to be familiar with coding software, such as HTML and CSS. Some people specialize in specific aspects of web development, such as responsive design or SEO (search engine optimization), and build up a portfolio that reflects this.
Experience
There are various routes to becoming a web developer uk, from non-graduate routes through apprenticeships or trainee roles with digital agencies to graduate degrees in computer science and software development. While a degree provides a structured and well-rounded education, practical experience in the form of internships or personal projects is also important to demonstrate your ability.
It’s also a good idea to build a portfolio of your work, which you can use to show potential employers or clients. This will give you the opportunity to be selective and only include your best and most relevant pieces, and it can demonstrate the breadth of your abilities. You may also wish to list specialized skills that you have mastered, such as knowledge of different programming languages or web development frameworks like React and Angular.
Once you have built up your experience, it’s likely that you will progress through a junior or entry-level role into a senior position within an agency or tech company. This will allow you to work on a wider range of projects and learn more about the different elements of the role. You may also be able to take on a management role, leading new projects or mentoring junior and mid-level developers in your team. Another option is to set up your own consultancy, in which case you would win client contracts and employ other developers as necessary.
Skills
Web developers uk build and look after websites for a variety of different clients. Some specialize in the software and databases that help websites function, commonly known as ‘back end’ development, while others work on the front end of sites, coding the user interface and other visual elements. Some also develop and manage web servers and database applications, often using specialist tools and languages such as Java and application programming interfaces (APIs). Many web developers are full-stack, working on both the back end and front end and can be found in both agencies and in-house roles.
Most web developers work on a project basis and will need to be able to meet deadlines. They may also be required to work with other teams in a collaborative environment and will need to be able to communicate clearly in a written and verbal manner. The profession is a very technical one, and some employers may expect to see postgraduate qualifications or apprenticeships before considering hiring someone in this role.
Those looking to gain a foothold in the industry can start out on an apprenticeship or trainee developer scheme, or take a degree course with a focus on computer systems, software engineering, or web development. These can be gained in university colleges or through a wide range of online learning providers. Some courses offer a year in industry placement, providing the opportunity to learn the job whilst earning a salary.
Certifications
You can learn the basic skills of web development by taking online courses or following tutorials. Private training providers can also offer one-day and weekend boot camps on specific coding languages or technologies. Alternatively, many people begin their careers in this field by taking a degree in a subject like computer science, IT, software engineering, or programming. Often, these degrees include a year in industry or work placement, which can help you to get your foot in the door of this career.
After completing your qualification, you can find roles in in-house companies, agencies, or as freelancers. In-house roles can be a good option for those who want to stay close to home and focus on building up their portfolio, while agency work offers more varied projects and clients. Freelance opportunities also give you the chance to specialize in certain aspects of web development and build a highly specialized portfolio.
In most cases, you will start as a junior or entry-level developer and then progress to senior and lead positions over time. This can include leading new projects, attending client meetings, and mentoring junior and mid-level developers. You can also further advance your career by learning more coding languages, specializing in areas of high demand, and setting up your own web development agency. This will allow you to earn higher salaries and grow your own business.

Crewe Heritage Centre in Crewe, Cheshire
The Heritage Center is located in the Victorian Old Works, which was demolished in the early 1980s. Its main exhibition hall features shifting exhibits tracing the development of locomotives and carriages and the junction's effects on Crewe's way of life. The oldest surviving Advanced Passenger Train, a prototype built in Derby in 1979 and intended to tilt to achieve faster speeds, is arguably the most impressive exhibit. Kids can ride in the "Columbine" steam locomotive's cab and operate a 47-cab simulator. Additionally, visitors can drive a miniature train and view a variety of permanent and visiting locomotives. They can also see a continuously changing selection of model railroads from all over the country.
Driver Who Crashed into a Lorry Walks Free from Court
When you rush into work ten minutes late, it's so easy to blame traffic. However, is your tardiness the result of traffic? Blaming someone or something else for your problems is a simple method to avoid taking responsibility for your actions. When you are unable to find a better solution to issues or are incapable of facing a personally upsetting circumstance, you routinely play the blame game. The long-term benefits of playing it are greatly exaggerated in the minds of those who do it. In reality, study shows that those who tend to blame others rather than themselves for their mistakes do worse, learn less, and lose social status among their peers. Read more.
