“From early 90s to early noughties, HMV released a lot of excellent music through their own HMV Classics label. I bought several CDs from this collection, available only from their own stores. It was an economical way of listening to a wide range of excellent recordings, before the world of streaming services and the sad demise of HMV itself. This may well have been one of the first that I bought, but I really can’t remember. . It’s an excellent recording, with superstars from the world of baroque and renaissance music such as Gregorio Allegri, Thomas Tallis, William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons and Henry Purcell. Then there are other, more recent composers, fulfilling the “other spiritual classics” from the album title: Faure, Poulenc and Durufle making up the French contingent, the Englishmen Edward Elgar and John Tavener, and then two very recent British composers, Elizabeth Poston (the only female composer here) and Geoffrey Burgon, who I discovered (via the magic of Wikipedia) also composed the music for Monty Python’s Life of Brian. . That might sound a right old hotchpotch of musical styles, but the compilation works exquisitely, taking Allegri’s Miserere mei as it’s soundboard, bookended by the equally gorgeous Spem in alium by Tallis. Elgar’s Ave verum corpus and Faure’s Pie Jesu from his Requiem are highlights in between, but there’s something for everyone here. That is, if by spiritual you mean from the Christian faith. I know of few other compilations that can successfully cover 450 years of music on one CD...” . “Pärt’s compositions in general, and these in particular, exhibit a kind of luminosity. They are light and clear, offering a sense of peace to the listener without the often intense drone-like quality of much contemporary classical work. They sound at once both ancient and modern, and he’s often considered to be a religious or spiritual composer. Listening to this, it’s no surprise that he’s the most-performed living composer..” .
