Happy Trafalgar Day 2024!
Today, 21st October, I commemorate Trafalgar Day, marking the 219th anniversary of one of the most decisive naval battles in history—the Battle of Trafalgar. On this day in 1805, the Royal Navy, commanded by Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, delivered a stunning victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets, ensuring Britain's naval supremacy for the next century.
The battle took place off the coast of Cape Trafalgar, Spain, during the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon Bonaparte sought to invade Britain, but the powerful French and Spanish fleets were thwarted by the tactical genius of Nelson. His famous battle plan, defying traditional naval tactics of parallel lines, saw the Royal Navy attack the enemy fleet in two columns, breaking through and scattering their forces.
Although the victory was decisive, it came at a great cost. Nelson himself was mortally wounded aboard HMS Victory, his final words reportedly being, "Thank God I have done my duty." His legacy, however, has lived on as a symbol of British courage, patriotism, and naval supremacy.
For those of us who hold an appreciation for history and the enduring significance of national defence, Trafalgar Day is a moment to reflect on how this single battle shaped the course of history. The Royal Navy's triumph prevented Napoleon's invasion of Britain, allowing the island nation to remain a bastion of liberty in Europe.
Today, I honour not only Nelson but the sailors and officers whose bravery and sacrifice secured a legacy of freedom. Trafalgar Day serves as a reminder of Britain's storied naval history and the pivotal role it played in shaping the modern world.

Funny what you find when focused on your own stuff and not weighed down by other things. Three or four years ago I cut some linos but never got around to printing from them. Found them today and, because I'm tidying my studio I decided the best way to do that was to make test prints of these, on the floor, using a book press and making more mess than I started with 😏, but they turned out ok didn't they? #art #artist #portsmouthartist #portsmouth #portsmouthart #prints #linocut #linoprint #hmsvictory #southseacastle #kingstheatre #portsmouthhistoricdockyard #ricrobinsonart (at Fratton) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpS2yO1tPi9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

19th October 1781, the revolutionary war effectively ends, as trapped in Yorktown, the British forces under General Cornwallis sign terms of surrender to George Washington and Comte de Rochambeau. After the surrender the British troops march out of Yorktown to the tune “The World Turned Upside Down.” 19th October 1812, after their capture of of Moscow, and the discovery that the retreating Russians have burned the city; Napoleon's ‘Grande Armée’ totaling 685,000 soldiers, the largest army ever assembled, begin their retreat to Poland. Caught in the brutal winter, facing hypothermia and preyed upon by Cossacks and Peasants, the army is decimated with 27,000 soldiers surviving the campaign, with 380,000 dying and 100,000 captured. 21st October 1805, as part of Napoleon’s plan to invade England, and dominate the English channel, a combined French and Spanish fleet set sail from the port of Cádiz and meet the Royal Navy off the Cape of Trafalgar. In the resulting chaotic and brutal battle, 27 British ships fight against 33 French and Spanish. Admiral Nelson’s battle order of ships into columns, and the order to sail directly into the enemy fleet, batters the British Ships, but the resulting close quarter fighting and the British superior navy training, decimated 22 of the French and Spanish ships, while the British lost none, apart from Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory being heavily damaged. During the battle Nelson is shot by a French sailor aboard the French ship Redoutable, and heard to exclaim, "They finally succeeded, I am dead." At the Battle's end, Nelson succumbed to the wound and died.
