I accidentally stumbled onto this song again just yesterday. It brought back a scar that I thought had healed. Do you remember sending a cover of this to me…tears flowing. Had it really been a year since we promised to be…. #justamemory #illalwaysremember #brighterdayscoming

from the Instagram of Hmong American singer Pagnia Xiong:
Betcha didn’t know I was in a music duo once? Hello from 1999! I was so young. A new teenager. So to look back on that these moments, I am humbled. These are the building blocks of my music career. . I had just discovered I could sing a few years earlier in a Hmong children’s choir. That I could stand on a stage and stand my ground in front of hundreds of people who had never heard me. . Of course, it wouldn’t have happened without my sister, @pakoubeauty. When our choir days were over, she didn’t quit on me. We called ourselves Asianeyezed. For two years, we performed wherever people asked. Every Hmong New Year. Every family function. Every social event. Even when we didn’t expect to sing, we sung. . I like to think if we were still a duo today, The Kong & Shu Project would have some competition. LOL. I loved us. I still love us. And although Pa Kou no longer claims she sings, I still want us to perform together one day. When everything else ended in my music world, Pa Kou stood by me, instilled confidence in me, and made the journey more fun. . 20 years later, she still does that. I love you, sis. Forever and ever. . #throwbackthursday #PagniaXiong#Blessed #SingingSisters#HmongMusic #HmongSingers#HmongArtists #tksp

Hmong Music Awards???
So there is a 2nd annual Hmong Music Awards award this year. Although I do not usually agree with all of Wicked Mayhem’s nominees, categories, and the timing of the event, I still have to give them respect and credit where it is due. Whoelse would have made this event possible? I certainly would not have. People do not realize how hard it is to bring in artists from different states together. This is why I personally think that the Hmong Music Awards & HmongMusic Festival should be ONE event, and do away with non-music portions of HMF. It just makes a lot of sense, does itnot? Oh, well. I have no control overthat. Anyway, back to this article. I have compiled my own mini- Hmong MusicAwards of 2013.
Best Hip Hop/Rap Song
“Neej Tom Ntej” – David Yang
Who will argue with me that this has got to be one of thebest intros ever? Then the music changes to a keyboard with a simple, butawesome beat. The music alone is enjoyable. What I love most about this song is the wayhe uses Hmong in his lyrics. “Cov neegzoo, nyob lub ntiaj teb no los yeej muaj thiab. Thov txhob tig rov qab los. Peb mus nyob lub neej tshiab.” This translates to “The good people, on this planet, they exist too. Don’t turn back. We’ll start fresh.” A lot of people do not realize how hard it isto make a deep rhyme in Hmong. His Englishbursts add another dimension to this song. They seem to come at just the right times. His positive lyrics is also another plus inmy books. It’s good to see a hip hop/rapsong with a positive message. As ayoung, rising talent, he can only improve. He is probably one of the best Hmong lyricists today.
Best Pop Song
“Hello, Nyob Zoo” – Cody C. Lee
Somebody, give this guy an award already! Since Proto-J’s debut, no other Hmong artisthas had such a great guitar talent that also comes with an appropriate voice togo along with it. If I didn’t know whoCody was, and I heard this on the radio, I’d probably “shazam’d” it. The guitars obviously catchy, and his voiceis just so natural when he is singing. Then again, if I had heard this on the radio first, I probably wouldhave not realized it was by a Hmong person. As with all my song choices, the lyrics play an important role. “Kuv xav nug koj lub npe. Au, puas tau? Yog koj tsis pub, txhob muab kuv ntaus.” A good artist knows how to have fun with hissongs. This translates to “I want to askfor your name. Oh, can I? If you won’t let, please don’t hit me.” Who writes a song like that? This guy – that’s who. I believe all the time he waited to releasean album was to make sure it was near perfect. He was real close.
Best Rock Song
“Uv Ci Nyiam Oj Lawm” – Hands Band
If you have heard of this song, I am sure you will agreewith me on this one. If you have notheard of this, then what are you waiting for? If you haven’t, it is probably because they are not from ourneighborhood. This is a Hmong fromThailand. The vocals cannot bechallenged. We do not hear manyvocalists like this. The wholecomposition of the song is unbelievable for a Hmong band. I don’t know about you guys, but I wouldthink this band was heavily influenced by Silly Fools. Again, just as I said about Cody’s song, thissong was written while they were having a good time. Parts of the verses and chorus are written (and sung) as if a child was singing it. Although his English bursts are too random, he seems to be pretty fluent at it on this song. I haven’t heard another Thai native speak English this clearly. Don’t let their looks fool you, though. These guys know what good music is!
Best Live Performance
Yoko’s - Hmong MusicFestival 2013
If you did not enjoy this performance, you are not a truemusic fan. The jazzy sounds, the awesomevocals, the drums, add the rock and roll, and you get yourself a bad ass liveperformance. If you do not know thisband, you are missing out. It is aproject featuring members (currently & formerly) from Sounders, Karma, 4thSeal, and Last Minute Band. This bandstole the stage with their version of “Neeg Hmoob,” originally performed byKarma. The stage presence is like noneother. Xai, the vocalist, was on point. Gentky, the guitarist, looked like he was oncloud nine. The pianos, drums, and basssolo just make it better. No one else sings with as much emotion as Xai does. If they ever release a studio of this version, you can assure you that I will be looking for it, and will probably be one of the first to own it. I have not seen a live band this much in syncfor a while. It seems as if these guyshave been playing together for decades. I’d pay to see them perform again.
Song of The Year
“Wb Chaw Pw” – Hands Band
When I first heard this song, I had chills. It reminded me of the greatest Hmong songsever, “Tig Rov Los” by Karma. This songhas over 300 covers on youtube. Not longfrom now, “Wb chaw Pw” will be following. It has been nearly 10 years since a Hmong band has composed a song ofthis caliber. The guitars, the melody, and who doesn’t love the vocals. Did I mention thelyrics? This song is about seeing whereyou and your loved one’s bedroom after she’s passed away. Her clothes, her jewelry, her love – it’s all still on that bed. I guess it is safe to say that this song willplaying at funerals in the near future. Before I forget, I must mention that this is the most original hmong band to have come out of Thailand by far. They are in a level of their own. Their debut album is currently for sale at the Fresno Hmong new year.
Album of the Year
“Carolina Tseem Nco” – The Kong & Shu Project
This was a hard one to choose, but I believe The Kong &Shu Project takes it. Let me start off by saying that their song “Nkauj Hmoob Carolina” would have won a “Best Lyrics” category if I had one. You must listento that song. It doesn’t matter if youare not from the Carolinas. It can berelated too, especially if you still remember Laos & Thailand. The lyrical subjects of their songs rangefrom love, education, to missing home. It also holds a broad range of musical genres. In one of their songs, you can hear whatseems to be a saxophone. There are even a few songs with a pinch of country. This album proves that they have matured greatly from their last album – something you do not see often in the music world. This is the best all-around album I have heard this year. Great lyrics, great music, great vocals, and song topics are spectacular. I can go onand write a full album review, but that’s another article. These guys are probably one of the most underrated Hmong bands today.
